Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido (3CD/2Blu-ray Boxset)

Hawkwind – Doremi Fasol Latido (3CD/2Blu-ray Boxset)

Following on from In Search Of Space, which cemented their signature sound, Hawkwind released their third album Doremi Fasol Latido in November 1972. Here, the sound is more full on, and with the driving rhythms provided by Lemmy and Simon King they get into an almost hypnotic sound drawing the listener in to new songs which will go on to form a large part of their legendary Space Ritual tour and live album.

This is another excellent package from Cherry Red Records, further establishing their reputation for remastering and repackaging classic releases. This box set comprises of 3 CDs and 2 Blu-ray discs along with a lavishly illustrated 68 page booklet and a reproduction poster, all in a well put together box set. In similar fashion to the In Search Of Space recent release the first disc contains the original stereo mix remastered, and the second disc the new stereo mixes by Stephen W Tayler, both discs containing bonus tracks. It is the third disc that may attract the attention of the Hawkwind fan base as it contains the famous live Greasy Truckers Party set from the Roundhouse, recorded on the 13th February 1972, with an all new stereo mix by Stephen W Tayler. The fourth disc is the Blu-ray disc, and has the album in 5.1 surround sound mix, as well as the original and new stereo mixes. Disc 5, another Blu-ray, has the 5.1 surround sound and new stereo mix of the Greasy Truckers Party set, as well as bonus video content featuring the Urban Guerrilla single’s promotional film.

The album was originally recorded at the legendary Rockfield studios and at Olympic studios during September and October 1972, this was to follow up on the success of the single Silver Machine. The original stereo mix remaster is very good, the sound quality is excellent, and it appears to have cleaned things up in comparison to my original vinyl copy that I bought back in 1972. They open up the album with Brainstorm, an eleven-minute tour de force of throbbing, hypnotic rhythms that draw you into the music, the track becoming a live staple. This is followed by classics such as Space Is Deep, Lord Of Light, and Time We Left This World Today, all sounding very good. The disc includes four bonus tracks, which again have good sound quality, Born To Go and the German single version of Lord Of Light are included here, also the A and B sides of the Urban Guerrilla single (banned by Radio 1 at the time because of the IRA mainland bombings – Ed).

The new stereo mix of the album by Stephen W Tayler is a revelation, the quality and clarity of the sound increases here, in my opinion, if that is even possible. There is very clear separation of the instruments and vocals giving space to appreciate each, indeed on Brainstorm it is noticeable that you can clearly hear the chanting to the rhythm of “Brainstorm” more so than the original. Four bonus tracks again, two of which are different from disc one, they being an interesting version of Seven By Seven which is an October 1972 remake. The other is a version of Brainbox Pollution marked as Take 3.

Next up we have the aforementioned complete Greasy Truckers Party gig, which was recorded at the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm London, on the Pye Mobile studio with the by engineer Vic Maile. The line-up was what went on to record Doremi, but with the addition of Robert Calvert on vocals and recitation. The mix is again excellent, clear with good separation, Stephen has done another very fine job here making it sound fresh and lively as if recently recorded.

This shows the band are a great live act, tight and powerful, charging through the set which was to become the foundation of the Space Ritual tour. There is an outstanding version of Born To Go, followed by the Brainstorm Jam to close the set. What is interesting is the inclusion of Brainstorm Jam which clearly demonstrates the early formed idea of the song prior to the finished product on Doremi. This version has very limited vocals, mostly just chanting of “Brainstorm”, but musically the band push onward, particularly towards the finale, where the pace becomes somewhat frantic but controlled, giving an excellent ending to the gig.

This is a classic album from Hawkwind’s 70s output and has been given the care and attention it deserves. This is another excellent remastered release which is available in several formats to suit all pockets, this box set 3CD/2Blu-ray version, also there is a 2CD Expanded Edition and an Expanded Vinyl 2LP Edition. Whether you’re a fan, a collector, or a newcomer to the band this not a bad place to start if you want a remaster of this classic album.
