Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - Still Barking (20 Disc Boxset)

Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band – Still Barking (20 Disc Boxset)

Dear reader, I’m Bonzoed out. When I took the reins in reviewing this mammoth twenty-disc boxset, I fully intended to explore every facet just as I did with Keith Emerson’s similarly-sized Variations. But after stumbling through five bizarre LPs and half a CD of singles, I realised my time was too valuable to listen to too much music that I didn’t enjoy, especially when a large chunk of that was slightly different versions of the same song. And since your time is valuable too, I will try to clamp down on my propensity to pontificate and give you a more concise yet still detailed look at the gargantuan retrospective offering of this 60s comedy outfit.

Vivian Stanshall is someone I learned about when I first heard Tubular Bells many years ago; announcing the instruments in the latter half of the first side, he had an unmistakable refined English accent. That was all I knew about him for the longest time. More parts of the puzzle started to come into view when I reviewed Roger Ruskin Spear’s pair of albums from the early 70s, after the original demise of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. I quite enjoyed those, so I believed I was ready for the full Bonzo experience.

I put on the band’s first album, Gorilla and was immediately greeted with Cool Britannia, the band’s send-up of the popular British anthem. I then started to get a sense of the band’s humour with the following songs, and I have to say, I was nonplussed. I consider myself to be a great fan of Monty Python and associated works – the Bonzos appeared in the broadcast of Do Not Adjust Your Set, which featured several future Pythons – but something about this absurd style of humour doesn’t translate well to music for me. I can appreciate that there are objectively humorous aspects to songs such as Jollity Farm and Mickey’s Son and Daughter, but it doesn’t make me laugh or even tickle me in the slightest. One theory I have is that I prefer the visual presentation, but I think the more pressing matter was that I didn’t find the music very interesting at all. The songs are mostly pastiches of hall music or other contemporary songs, with little attempt to push the envelope musically. Without that foundation, I became bored rather quickly. Perhaps my favourite track on the first album was Look Out, There’s a Monster Coming, which featured some interesting effects and contrasts and told something of a compelling story.

I was quite astonished, then, by the opening track of their second album: We Are Normal features a heavy intro with blasts on the organ followed by a heavy, chugging riff. There are minimal lyrics as the song becomes rather psychedelic, repeating the same pattern with odd sound effects. I really dug the vibe to this song and presumed that this album is where the music started to get good.

I turned out to be wrong about that too. This was really the only stand-out song of the album, and perhaps the entire set. Album number three contained catchier hits such as their cover of Monster Mash, the Paul McCartney-produced I’m the Urban Spaceman and the anthemic Mr. Apollo. Album number four, Keynsham, had fewer hits and was less interesting to me.

Surprisingly, the last album, Let’s Make Up and Be Friendly, recorded to fulfil a contractual obligation after the band’s split, showed a little more promise. Two lengthy tracks take up the centre of the album, the discombobulating Rusty (Champion Thrust) and the more avant-garde Rawlinson End, which seems more like an audiobook played over music. The music itself (some light music played on the piano and synthesiser) is some of the most innovative in the band’s catalogue, featuring plenty of time signature changes, and would not feel out of place on a prog rock album. I only wish they had found a way to expand on this style of music and add more musicians to it. I was glad to find that Music from Rawlinson End could be found as a standalone track on the singles CD without Stanshall’s aristocratic accent to distract from it.

I appreciated the intentional nod to the Beatles on Don’t Get Me Wrong. The album ends rather ominously with the track Bad Blood before another artistic instrumental, Slush. I quite appreciated the musical theme and wasn’t too perturbed by the repeated recording of the laughter that felt decidedly rhythmic.

If you’re like me and didn’t find the music to be incredible, the remaining ten CDs – yes, ten of them – will not be of interest, but let’s go through them anyway. Rather like the Beatles’ Past Masters, this set has a collection of singles and non-album tracks all nicely available on one CD, including tracks such as the humorous My Brother Makes the Noises for the Talkies and I’m Gonna Bring a Watermelon to My Gal Tonight – the latter of these did actually elicit a chuckle from me.

Following that are three CDs of demos, rehearsals and outtakes. What I would give to have three CDs of demos, rehearsals and outtakes from a group that I actually liked. I’m reminded of the Beatles’ Anthology series here. Bonzo fans will absolutely love it. The next CD is a series of twenty backing tracks, in case you feel like some karaoke. Three more CDs incorporate the BBC sessions, including some interview clips. The remaining two CDs (if you haven’t yet had your fill) are live recordings from Amsterdam and New York.

And that’s not all! Divided into Starters, Main Course, and Dessert, there are three DVDs to take you through the band’s chronology, beginning with an art school film by Neil Innes (which is surprisingly accompanied by his Rawlinson End music, even though that was composed several years later) and finishing with an interview with Roger Ruskin Spear for Dutch television where he shows off his bizarre and slightly disturbing gadgets. There are a plethora of TV appearances and live performances too, some in colour but mostly in monochrome. The DVDs are a valuable part of the set as you really begin to understand more of the band’s personality as they were a very visual sort. Impressively, the Colour Me Pop segment that was originally broadcast 21st December 1968 has been restored using AI as Michael Livesley explains below.

The second DVD – Main Course – features the band’s spots from their time on Do Not Adjust Your Set, and you can even recognise Michael Palin, Eric Idle and a young David Jason amongst the line-up for The Intro and the Outro before Terry Jones comes in “on toast!” as he munches a hardened piece of bread. The ten spots add up to less than half an hour, and it seems silly that they would need their own DVD when they could easily fit on one of the others. I get sceptical of ploys that arbitrarily add more discs so that you get a nice round number (in this case, twenty discs).

Two pages? Am I really about to wrap up a twenty-disc box set in just two pages of A4? I thought I’d never see the day. I don’t want to give the impression that the Bonzos weren’t a very talented and creative sort who deserved all of the notoriety they did back in the day; they absolutely made their mark on the comedic landscape in the late 60s, and in Stephen Fry’s intro to the set he says “I am who I am because of them.” I believe it. But as a fan of good music rather than good lyrics – I have Yes to thank for desensitising me against paying too much attention to lyrics – I cannot say I endorse the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.

Of course, if you’re already a fan of the band and don’t really care about my musical opinion, then you will be very satisfied by this set, which seems exhaustive in its collection of every little scrap of information and recording, audio or video, by the group. The 148-page hardback coffee-table book is absolutely packed with photos, press cuttings, essays and anecdotes about the group; far too much for me to even attempt to read, really. An invaluable resource is the “Cornology” section, which attempts to chart every single live performance by the group between 1966 and 1971 over several pages, with notes for many of the shows, as well as a separate section for their TV appearances. With this, you could effectively track the band’s movements over the years. I’m not even a fan of the group and I was mesmerised by how meticulously detailed this information was. The amount of care and passion that has been poured into the presentation of this box set is palpable, and I just wish more of my favourite bands could afford this kind of decadent treatment.
