29/04/2022: Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucia – Saturday Night in San Francisco

The previously unreleased recording featuring Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucia – Saturday Night in San Francisco will be released on 1st July 2022, via earMUSIC

Al Di Meola comments: “40 years ago the Guitar Trio with John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucía and myself played 2 nights in San Francisco! Friday and Saturday Night! Friday Night in San Francisco was released and went on to become a legendary record. Then during the pandemic in 2020 I found the tapes of Saturday Night in my basement. We didn’t even know if they were still any good. But I was curious, so we got the best people in the industry to restore those tapes. And today I couldn’t be more proud to present SATURDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO… “

The iconic precursor “Friday Night In San Francisco”, recorded at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on 5 December 1980 (and originally released in 1981), is considered one of all-time best-selling jazz/instrumental albums. Treasured for capturing three legendary and diverse guitar virtuosos at the height of their unparalleled mastery, it is a milestone album that went beyond the niche audience with its unique mix of jazz, fusion, flamenco, and Mediterranean music.

Combing through hours of the original 16-track live session tapes, Al Di Meola and his team have curated a breathtaking follow-up: “Saturday Night In San Francisco”, showcasing the explosive virtuosic final performance of the famous Guitar Trio at the Warfield Theatre on December 6, 1980. Al Di Meola says of that final night: “It’s exciting because the audience was right there with us, savoring every single note of music. And, we were ripping. It was crazy good!”

Saturday Night In San Francisco will be available as a CD Deluxe Digipak Edition, Digital Album, 180g Vinyl Gatefold Edition as well as a Strictly Limited Collector’s LP Edition on Heavyweight Crystal-Clear Vinyl.

27/04/2022: Big Big Train welcomes Alberto Bravin

Big Big Train have recruited Alberto Bravin as lead vocalist following the tragic death of David Longdon in November 2021.

Based in Trieste in Italy, Bravin’s career includes performing around 200 shows with progressive rock legends PFM between 2015 and January 2022, both in Italy and internationally, singing lead and backing vocals and playing keyboards.

Alberto Bravin says: “I am extremely honoured to have the opportunity to join Big Big Train. I was already a huge BBT fan and am looking forward to play my part in taking this great band forward while also honouring the memory of David Longdon.”

Big Big Train bassist and founder Gregory Spawton comments: “Before Covid-19 hit, Nick D’Virgilio and I had both seen Alberto perform with PFM. We were very impressed with his abilities as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and therefore approached him earlier this year.”

“We know that David is irreplaceable and we miss him deeply both musically and personally,” Spawton continues. “We were very clear that we didn’t want to bring someone into the band who would seek to mimic David; that just felt fundamentally wrong. Instead we wanted someone who could do justice with their own musical skills and personality to the songs that David sang for Big Big Train as well as being able to help to drive the band forwards. From his first audition singing some BBT classic songs and subsequently his work on some new material that we’re working on, we’re confident that we’ve found the right person in Alberto.”

“Aside from Alberto’s great voice and all round musical skills, it was also vital for us to find the right personal fit, particularly after being struck with David’s sudden death,” drummer Nick D’Virgilio comments. “We flew Alberto to London several weeks ago so we could hang together for a few days and the chemistry immediately felt right.”

Big Big Train have confirmed that their two previously announced UK shows in September 2022 will take place. In addition the band have scheduled six further shows for September in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France.

His death was posted in a brief statement on the Klaus Schulze Facebook page: “In deepest sorrow we have to inform you that Klaus has passed away yesterday on April 26, 2022 at the age of 74 after a long disease but all of a sudden.

He leaves behind a huge musical legacy and is survived by his wife, two sons and four grandchildren.

In his name and in the name of the family we would like to thank you for your loyalty and support over all these years – it has meant a lot to him!

His music will remain, and our memories…

There’s a lot more to write about him as person and artist but he probably would have told us: nuff said!

According to his wishes we will bid farewell to him in the closest family circle. You know him and what he always said: my music is important, not my person…”

22/04/2022: The Blackheart Orchestra release first single from forthcoming album

Under The Headlights is the first single to be released from The Blackheart Orchestra upcoming album Hotel Utopia, which is scheduled for 26 August 2022.

Commenting on the single: “It was written about all of those anxieties that keep us awake at night and is about learning to let go of these and surrendering to what is and realising that even though we may be just small specks of flickering lights we are all part of something bigger, we all matter and deserve to be seen.”

“The song features the voice of a man we hugely admire, 1960’s British philosopher Alan Watts recorded at one of his famous lectures ‘Myth of Myself’ and the video was shot in London and then 3 feet from the edge of the 531ft high cliffs at Birling Gap, South Downs which is sadly Britain’s 3rd most popular suicide location.”

21/04/2022: The Pineapple Thief release video for Dead In The Water (Rewired)

The Pineapple Thief release a newly recorded version of Dead In The Water (Rewired), originally featured on the their Little Man album from 2006, and one of the tracks from their upcoming Give it Back scheduled for 12 May 2022.

Bruce Soord comments on Dead In The Water: “This is a completely new take on a song I originally wrote as the opener for our 2006 album ‘Little Man’. Gavin’s new drum parts took the song into exciting uncharted territory for me and like all the songs on ‘Give it Back’, it inspired me to replay everything, as if the song was new. After Steve and Jon added their brilliant new synth and bass parts, it became a song that felt really fresh and fitted nicely into what TPT have become today – we’ve already slotted it into our current live show.”

21/04/2022: YES postpone European dates to 2023

YES have announced that due to on-going pandemic issues they have been forced to reschedule their European Tour dates until 2023. The 2022 UK & Ireland dates are not effected.

In a statement on their website: It is with great disappointment YES announce that the logistical problems of arranging European tour dates for 2022, caused by the on-going pandemic, have proved insurmountable. YES have taken the decision, for the safety of band members, crew and audiences, to reschedule all mainland European dates to 2023. This has allowed us to add back in the Rockhal in Luxembourg, which we were unable to accommodate in the 2022 tour.

Geoff Downes: “We’re really looking forward to getting back onstage and performing for our fans. Relayer will be special.”

The tour line-up features Steve Howe (guitars), Alan White (drums), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (vocals), Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Jay Schellen (additional drums and percussion).

As previously announced, the show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall. The show will include favourite classic tracks from YES’ extensive catalogue together with Relayer, the seventh studio album by YES and one of the band’s most distinctive, in full. Relayer marked a slight change in direction as Patrick Moraz replaced Rick Wakeman on keyboards bringing an edgier, avant-garde feel to the album. This was perfect for the opening track Gates Of Delirium, almost 22 minutes in length, with its battle scene featuring the keyboard of Moraz and Steve.

Full details of the rescheduled dates can be found on the YES Live page…

20/04/2022: Umphrey’s McGee release new album in July

Umphrey’s McGee have announced the release a new studio album, Asking For A Friend, on 1 July 2022 via Nothing Too Fancy Music. Ahead of the release the band issued Small Strides (Official Audio) in March…

The Chicago improv crew’s 15th studio record is the follow-up to 2021’s You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall And Left A Raging Bull, and was recorded across three different studios over the last three years. Guitarist and vocalist Brendan Bayliss describes it as “tapping into the idea that we were all isolated yet somehow still connected and experiencing the same emotions.”

Adds drummer Kris Myers of the 14-track, “This album reflects how our songwriting has really come a long way since the days of putting Lego together, a term given to explain our past process of assembling the greater sum of the parts in eclectic fashion. Instead, we were able to naturally connect with these songs with our hearts, and a little less from our heads through simple, serene songs.”

15/04/2022: Vanderwolf releases debut single, When The Fire Grows Cold, featuring Robert Wyatt

New York City musician Max Vanderwolf has released his debut single, via Proper Music, featuring Robert Wyatt. To accompany the lead track videographer Alden Volney is created a touching animated video…

Explains Vanderwolf: “I had produced a tribute to Wyatt in NYC many years ago. Fred Frith, Peter Blegvad, Hugh Hopper and many others appeared. Robert gave it his official nod of support. When I moved to London to produce my first Meltdown Festival, Robert seemed the obvious choice to curate it, and from that, a lovely friendship evolved. Of course, it was daunting asking him to sing something I’d written. I know he gets a lot of proposals of which he turns down nearly all. But happily, he said yes. He said he thought he could sing this set of lyrics — and commented about the possibility of singing about his father. It was a huge relief to me.”

The single’s B-side, “Extinction!”, is a dark ritualistic journey involving Balkan brass, African drumming, electronic analogue trance elements and the crunch of metal guitars, and features an incredible glissando guitar solo from the late, legendary Daevid Allen and sax from the wonderful Terry Edwards.

The idea of these tracks being paired is partially due to the thematic link of the lyrics: the folly of human progress that has brought us to the very brink of our own mass extinction. But it is also a linkage between Wyatt and Allen who met as kids in Canterbury England when Daevid Allen became a boarder in the Wyatt household at the age of 16. He had been shipped off by his family to England because he was too effeminate and too artistically-inclined for the rugged testosterone-driven culture of Australia in the early 1960s. Daevid showed up with Charlie Parker albums under his arm and, from their mutual love of bebop, a vital creative relationship was forged that eventually led to the pair forming Soft Machine along with Kevin Ayers and Mike Ratledge. That love of jazz is reflected in the music and the artwork (by Trend & Chaos) on ”Extinction!”

The debut album from Vanderwolf will be released this summer.

14/04/2022: Luke Machin reveals Daniel Gildenlöw to guest on new solo album

Luke Machin has announced that Daniel Gildenlöw will be adding his voice on Luke’s forthcoming solo album Soulshine

Luke Machin comments: “To have Daniel contributing his voice to my debut solo album is a dream come true. The song Daniel will be contributing to is the big ballad on the record called “Parisienne Rooftops”. The most surreal sentence I could say next is that, Daniel Gildenlöw, Guthrie Govan and Francis Dunnery will be all contributing their energy to the same song on Soulshine! How about that!?”

Previously Luke called on drummer Marco Minnemann to lay down the drum tracks for the album’s only instrumental…

“This is the only instrumental on the album and a very ambitious one to say the least for me as my dream drummer would be Marco and even composing certain areas to somewhat tie in with his style of playing. Pursuing those ambitions I went straight to the top and asked Marco if he would join me on this piece. I’ve been a huge fan of him and his playing, his energy and creative force in music for a long time now and to say I’m honoured to have him appear on my debut album is an understatement!”

No official date has been announced, however it is hoped “to release it sometime in the middle of the year” comments Luke.

10cc legends Godley & Creme unreleased album Frabjous Days – The Secret World Of Godley & Creme 1967-1969 will be released on 10 June 2022 via Cherry Red Records.

Godley & Creme: Frabjous Days – The Secret World Of Godley & Creme 1967-1969The release marks the first-ever issue of the unreleased 1969 studio album from pre- Hotlegs/10cc duo Godley & Creme during their days as Frabjoy And Runcible Spoon. The album was recorded at Advision Studios with support from future 10cc colleagues Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart, however it never saw the light of day. 53 years later, Grapefruit Records will finally rectify the missing piece of the pre-10cc jigsaw puzzle. Housed in a stylish, previously unpublished 1969 Marmalade promo photo of the pair, the fabulous “Frabjous Days” is a digipak release with a 28-page booklet containing a new 6000 word essay and some extremely rare photos and memorabilia.

“These songs sound like they were written and recorded before we were born…and in a sense they were. It’s the sound of two young art students messing around at weekends, stringing chords and words together for the sheer, explosive buzz of hearing what happens. There’s a thrill in not knowing what you’re doing but aiming high anyway and that, I believe, is exactly what’s going on in these recordings.”Kevin Godley

09/04/2022: Amy Birks releases second single from forthcoming album

Today sees the release of the second single taken from the In Our Souls album which will be officially released on 17 June 2022. Brothers features guest musicians John Hackett (flute) and Frank Van Essen (violin)…

Amy comments on the song: “I have two estranged brothers and those tumultuous relationships have been the subject, or at least the undercurrent of many a song. For whatever reason, we have never seen eye to eye, hence the opening words of ‘I don’t understand why. Do you? Do you know why?’ and the build-up of aggression through the instrumentation. This, I suppose, is my therapy.”

Amy will officially launch the In Our Souls album at Stoke on Trent Town Hall (Jubilee Hall) on Saturday 18 June 2022. Support for the evening will be The Blackheart Orchestra.

08/04/2022: The Flower Kings to re-release their back catalogue

The Flower Kings

The Flower Kings recently released their 15th studio album By Royal Decree, followed by the announcement of the first live dates in support of the album, which took place in Sweden in March 2022. The band will also be touring Europe in the autumn.

The 2022 tour will also see the band revisiting their early years, performing tracks from Retropolis, Stardust We Are, Flower Power, Space Revolver and Back In The World Of Adventures. This will coincide with the InsideOut Music’s release of newly remastered editions of The Flower Kings albums on CD & Vinyl, later in 2022 and early 2023. The first two releases to see the light of day will be Back In The World Of Adventures and Retropolis which will both be released on the 27th May 2022.

The Flower Kings - Back In The World Of Adventures and Retropolis

Roine comments: “I’ve been living life in the fast lane for a long time as far as releases with The Flower Kings and all my other bands and projects – but it’s been both a real joy and a sobering experience re-visiting the early Flower Kings years and early albums.

I remember once again what I set out to do in the mid 90’s – Symphonic progressive rock with a clear melodic and sometimes ’folky’ vibe – a Swedish tone – colored by all things progressive and influenced by my teenage years listening habits. Hearing Focus, Frank Zappa, Yes, Tomita, Gentle Giant and Weather Report etc. back then, opened up a world of possibilities.

Remixing some of these songs, for the reissues, took me back and made it even more fun to start work on and include a big chunk of this in our live set. We are now truly heading back to the world of musical adventures.”

The next two releases will be Flower Power & Stardust We Are scheduled for 24th June 2022…

08/04/2022: The Tangent announce July release date new studio album

The Tangent will release their latest studio album, Songs From The Hard Shoulder on the 10th June 2022, via InsideOut Music/Sony Music. Today sees the release of The Changes (Single Edit) taken from the album…

Andy Tillison comments:The Changes which will open the album was written in the thick of Lockdowns around the world. For a while nearly everyone experienced these feelings, that life was somehow passing them by. Everyone feeling isolated, uncertain, at risk, wondering who they would never see again, whether they would ever see places, people, bands, football matches, cinemas and loved ones again. The song also references itself as a catharsis, a personal way out, a way to focus any optimism I was capable of feeling and solidify that optimism in a song – a song to give me my own hope. The song uses a mini story about The Tangekanic band in Germany trying to find a hotel after a gig we didn’t get paid for – after a week of rehearsal and a journey of about 900 miles as a focus. The fact we were still laughing is of crucial importance. The lyric line in this song “Gonna need a lot of love if we want net-zero hate” probably coalesces the purpose of the album into a single line.”

Songs From The Hard Shoulder was written and developed during the global pandemic of course and has striven to maintain the same level of collaboration as the band has always put at the top of its priority tree. “This is a pretty deep running and thoughtful album” says Andy Tillison… “where we have really focussed on composition and structure in the absence of opportunities to play together”.

Friends and enemies—life and death—good and bad. The eternal contrast and conflict that tears us apart so easily yet mends us so arduously. It’s not a fair fight.

As another generation witnesses first had the horrors of yet another war, we can strive to temper our helplessness by supporting the difficult but necessary work the UNHCR provides to lessen the burden for millions of displaced refugees.

As we embark on our humble contribution, we ask that along with our partners at UNHCR, Snapper Music / Kscope, GZ / Precision Vinyl & Vision Merch, you kindly share in supporting us at this time of need with your generosity.

07/04/2022: TesseracT in support of humanitarian crises around the world

TesseracT have announced, Regrowth, a special double A-Side to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to help the Ukrainian people and others caught up in disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.

“These songs have been in the TesseracT domain for a while. We had developed them for album 5, but they just weren’t the right fit for where that album has headed. Rather than have them slowly decay on a server somewhere, we felt they could do something good, no matter how small?

Many organisations are doing good at the moment. Médecin Sans Frontières, Amnesty International, and World United. We chose to help The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) in their drive to aid those in Ukraine affected by the invasion by Russia, and warzones around the world.

Our last headline tour visited Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv. We have travelled the roads currently under attack, but cannot begin to imagine the change they have undergone.”

Hot on the heels of their UK tour comes the announcement that Gong and Ozric Tentacles will play a series of joint UK dates from mid November to early December 2022.

Ozric Tentacles & Gong Tour Poster 2022

Kavus Torabi – Gong: “Gong and Ozric Tentacles have a long history together, but this is our first fully fledged, psychedelic double-dip, joint headline tour. Ever since The Ed Wynne Band played with Gong on our 2019 tour, we all agreed what a wonderful partnership this would make. I’m so happy that this will see fruition in November 2022. You can expect an outpouring of radiance and joy from both bands, it can’t come around soon enough.”

Ed Wynne – Ozric Tentacles: “I recently toured with Silas Wynne as an Electronic version of the band, but the opportunity to put together a full live again band after such a long hiatus is both daunting and exhilarating. One thing’s for sure though, this tour will be an amazing experience to share with all our fans.”

01/04/2022: Tim Bowness releases Always The Stranger single

Tim Bowness returns in 2022 with his seventh solo album Butterfly Mind, scheduled for 17 June 2022. Produced in conjunction with long-time collaborator Brian Hulse, and mixed & mastered by Steven Wilson, this new album is his most surprising release yet. Today sees the release of Always The Stranger, the first single from the album…

Tim comments: “The title of the song derives from the name of my first ever 1980s solo project. Despite being pretty experimental – I was a very intense teenager! – and only existing on home-produced demo cassettes, ATS got a lot of very welcome support from local media (BBC GMR, Piccadilly Radio, Manchester Evening News and Warrington Guardian, in particular). In some ways, the lyric is something of a ‘what might have been’ or even ‘what may be’ scenario. It’s about what can happen when you don’t embrace change or challenge and creative restlessness gives way to cynical stasis.”

Always The Stranger features Richard Jupp (in his first major session since leaving Elbow) & Nick Beggs, as well as featuring haunting backing vocals from Martha Goddard of The Hushtones.

Previously announced Tim will celebrate the release of Always The Stranger with two live UK dates in June plus a Q&A at Rough Trade East. Support for the live shows will be Ms Amy Birks

01/04/2022: Big Big Train ‘career so far’ book to be published in June

Big Big Train – Between The Lines: The Story Of A Rock BandBig Big Train – Between The Lines documents the entire career of Big Big Train to date. From the band’s humble beginnings in Bournemouth on the UK’s south coast and its slow progress through the 1990s, Classic Rock and Prog magazine writer Grant Moon then covers Big Big Train’s endurance through the 2000s before charting the arrival into the band of drummer Nick D’Virgilio in 2007 and their breakthrough with 2009 album The Underfall Yard, their first with vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Longdon.

The book goes on to explore the band’s steady rise to greater commercial and critical success during the 2010s, including their return to live performance in 2015 and triumphant headline show at the Night Of The Prog festival at Loreley, Germany in July 2018.

Big Big Train – Between The Lines concludes by bringing the band’s story fully up to date, detailing last year’s Common Ground and this year’s Welcome To The Planet albums and how the band have persisted despite numerous challenges including the turmoil of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The book was written primarily in 2020 and 2021 and completed early in 2022 to take account of David Longdon’s tragic death in November last year. Moon interviewed over 30 musicians and other individuals connected with Big Big Train and their story. These included Tony Banks of Genesis, who provides significant insight into David Longdon’s audition to replace Phil Collins in Genesis.

Big Big Train – Between The Lines will be published as a ca. 270-page, coffee table-style hardback book, with over 180 photographs and illustrations documenting the band’s career and the early lives of band members, many of which have never been previously published.

01/04/2022: Karnivool reschedule The Regeneration European Tour to 2023

In an announcement on their Facebook Page the band comment: “Having already rescheduled our European shows twice, we have tried every which way to make them happen this year but we are in the unavoidable position where we must move The Regeneration Tour – again. We could put out some lame excuse but that would be a disservice to all of you and to everyone who has tried so hard to make it happen.”

So here is the reality for a band from Perth, Western Australia: “Touring internationally is a risky business especially for artists who don’t want to compromise their show and we have always accepted that, but for us right now a significant financial blow – on top the pummelling we took in the last two years – would be, frankly, the end of the band.”

01/04/2022: Jon Gomm becomes 1st Ambassador for The Swan Song Project

Jon Gomm has recently pledged his support to a small charity called The Swan Song Project, and agreed to become their 1st ambassador. The Swan Song Project helps people who are facing the end of their life to write and record an original song. The charity started in 2017 working with people in hospices across Leeds and Bradford. It has since made its service available virtually, enabling people all across the country to access their support to leave a unique legacy in song.

Jon said “I am honoured to be the 1st ambassador for The Swan Song Project. Writing a song in those circumstances is an amazing idea. Sometimes it’s incredibly hard to express things in words or face to face. So being able to put it into that form, that people can then listen to forever, seems to me an incredible way of having a real memory of a person, to help you cope with the fact that they’re not there anymore.”

The Swan Song Project founder and Creative Director Ben Buddy Slack said: “It means a lot to us at The Swan Song Project to have the support of Jon Gomm. We are a very small charity at the moment, but we have big ambitions. We believe everyone should have the chance to leave a song for their loved ones, and we want to be able to support as many people as possible to do this. Jon did our podcast last year and I felt like we clicked. He really got what we were doing and understood the value of it. We were very pleased when he agreed to be our 1st ambassador and we look forward to working together.”
