25/03/2022: Kaipa release a lyric video for Urskog

Taken from their forthcoming and 14th studio album, Kaipa release a lyric video for Urskog the title track…

“Urskog takes the listener on a breathtaking journey through the Swedish wilderness and the changing seasons. Hans Lundin’s six new compositions draw influences from the landscapes he witnesses during his solitary countryside biking treks as well as from a less known part of his own vast song catalogue.”

Hans Lundin comments: “Most of the songs were written in 2018. At the time I was working on the 6-CD box “Hans Lundin: The Solo Years 1982-1989”, and revisiting my old solo albums informed my songwriting process for “Urskog”. Listening to these old compositions influenced my new compositions in a general way; there were also few instances where I took a nice chord structure or a melodic fragment of an old song and turned it into something entirely new. I also sampled some sounds from the 80’s that can be heard on the new album.”

Urskog is released on InsideOut Music label on 29th April 2022

LaBrie expresses that the song was written about “someone who started out as a decent human being, but along the way lost touch with their roots – overtime becoming self-serving, narcissistic and devoid of principles or values.” Going on to say, “’Devil In Drag’ is written from the perspective of someone who’s known them all their life and, seeing them now, asking ‘what happened?’”

18/03/2022: Crypto Knight release first single from The Quest

Describing their music as a mix of Electronica and Modern Prog, USA based duo Crypto Knight have released the first music from The Quest, their debut album. Break the Code will be released on 25th March 2022, preceded by the video – premiered today…

Crypto Knight is Dave Johnson (The Forgotten Man) & Tim Malugin, who met online during a music course the pair realized that despite very different backgrounds (Dave from North East England (now based in Las Vegas) & Tim from Tennessee) they had similar musical influences including Folk Rock, Classic Rock, Progressive Rock and Electronic Music and so started writing together. With Dave composing the music and Tim providing melodies and lyrics, the early online collaborations as part of their course were focused on more modern commercial sounding tracks. However, it was soon apparent that they preferred to write in their more familiar Rock style and so new material came together very quickly throughout 2021.

Crypto Knight’s second single Supernova will be released on 29th April and the 12 track album The Quest is scheduled for 22nd May. The duo also has a 20-minute concept track Union Square which will get a later release in its own right.

Roadburn has announced a new venue for the 2022 edition of the festival, which takes place April 21-24 this year. The renowned and respected jazz club Paradox will host a programme of artists across the four days of the festival, which highlights the more experimental and avant-garde artists in the Roadburn realm.

Bartho van Straaten, artistic director of Paradox comments: “As a venue for innovating and adventurous improvised music, Paradox is thrilled to start this new collaboration with Roadburn, a festival that approached music with the same open-minded attitude. The program of Paradox and Roadburn definitely has an overlap, so it will be interesting to present common grounds by curating the Paradox stage together, and share our musical thoughts in redefining heaviness.”

With just a few more bands, art exhibitions and the side programme still to announce for Roadburn 2022, the jam-packed line up will have something for every visitor with a curiosity for heavy music.

16/03/2022: Italian alchemists Ufomammut return with their ninth album Fenice

Italian alchemists Ufomammut will be returning with their ninth album, titled Fenice, scheduled for 6th May 2022 via Neurot Recordings. Fenice will mark a new chapter in the story of the band, not just as their first with new drummer Levre, but also points towards the beginnings of a new sound for Ufomammut. Today sees the release of the Psychostasia official video…

“Whilst the band are well-known for their psychedelic travels into the far reaches of the cosmos, Fenice is a much more introspective listening experience. Fenice was conceived as a single concept track, divided in six facets of this inward-facing focus. Sonic experimentations abound in the exploration of this central theme; synths and experimental vocal effects are featured more prominently than ever before as the band push themselves ever further into the uncharted territory of their very identity.”

11/03/2022: Colin Edwin Bandcamp page to benefit Red Cross Ukrainian Crisis Fund

Colin Edwin Bandcamp Page

In an attempt to help the relief efforts, the albums made in collaboration with Ukrainian musicians, namely the Astarta/Edwin and EDK releases (and others forthcoming.…) are now available on a new Bandcamp page set up specifically to raise funds for the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal here: AEAppeal.bandcamp.com

As well as raising funds, it’s important that Ukrainian music, perhaps lesser known outside the country, is able to reach as many people as possible, in order to present an example of something positive from Ukraine, and to let the wider world know that Ukrainians posses a distinct and rich culture of their own, so therefore everything will be available on a “pay as you like” basis, and will remain so, but I would like to encourage everyone who can, to please make a donation to aid the humanitarian efforts.

The war in Ukraine is destroying the lives of many people, and the musicians we’ve made these recordings with have, along with many of their compatriots, had their lives completely upended, so please share, tweet, download, donate.

The bulk of these recordings are based around traditional folk forms and melodies, passed from one generation to the next, long may they continue to do so…

Featured Musicians: Inna Kovtun, Yulia Malyarenko, Eduard “Dilya” Prystupa, Bogdan Kerichok, levgen Zharinov, with Colin Edwin, Jon Durant, Steve Bingham, Pat Mastelotto, Roberto Gualdi

10/03/2022: YES ‘The Album Series Tour 2022’ changes from Relayer to CTTE

YES - Close To The Edge 50th Anniversary Tour

YES announce a change to their forthcoming “The Album Series Tour 2022” as they will celebrate the 50th anniversary their iconic album “Close to the Edge”. This tour, twice rescheduled due to the Covid pandemic was intended to showcase YES‘ 1974 classic “Relayer” album but will now feature “Close to the Edge”, performed in full, along with other classic tracks from YES‘ extensive catalogue.

An announcement regarding the European dates will be made shortly.

The tour line-up features Steve Howe (guitars), Alan White (drums), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (vocals), Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals) with additional drums and percussion by Jay Schellen. All tour dates are as previously announced and all tickets remain valid. A full performance of the “Relayer” album will now be featured in a future tour in The Album Series.

The show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Roger Dean who will also be joining the tour with an exhibition of YES related art.

Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile, in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. “Close to the Edge” became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians.

Steve Howe: “We reached a real high, doing Close To The Edge, we valued the musicianship, the artistic ideas and the vocalising that people bring and that’s why we’re still doing it, because it’s exciting to do! Close To The Edge was voted the most-proggy album possibly ever made. It was very experimental. We had already done 10-minute epics but with Close To The Edge we just took it a stage further and I’m very pleased we were brave enough to do that.”

09/03/2022: MobiUS release Make The Promise on CD

UK based mobiUS have signed with Caerlyssi Music/White Knight Records for the physical release of Make The Promise. The band was first imagined as a concept by the composer and keyboard player Tim Newcombe back in 2012. He began writing and after several experiments with various musicians, the concept lay dormant. However, Tim remained frustrated with the offerings by mass market mundane radio stations and vowed to produce something which had the spark of originality.

In a recent interview, Tim was asked about his motivation and inspiration for the ‘Make the Promise’ album: “This is a collection of musical ideas I’ve been mulling over for some time. I am passionate that music should be a deep form of expression. Something that transcends the standard chord progressions and lyrical subjects of much contemporary music. It seems to me that imagination and ideas are constrained by what is considered a standard chord progression, or fettered by time. I especially like a song or tune to evolve. To develop. To exist and breath as an identity by itself. I love to experiment with time signatures, styles, tempo and timbre changes within the same piece. This allows the piece find it’s own direction analogous to a stream finding its way through a variety of terrains.”

09/03/2022: AKKU Quintet Release New “Live” Album

AKKU Quintet - Live album cover“Live” takes you on a 75-minute long musical journey and leads you into the cosmos of Swiss-based AKKU Quintet led by drummer and composer Manuel Pasquinelli (also known for his work with Sonar & David Torn). It contains five songs from different stages of the group’s history, recorded at various locations between 2016 and 2020. You’ll hear the touch and character of each player, acting as a part of the ensemble to create this atmospheric, minimalistic yet livingly driving music.

Says Manuel, “Playing this music live is always an intense and beautiful experience. While not perfect, live versions often have a certain quality and spirit, which are hard to achieve in the studio. We want to share some live moments we captured on different occasions with this album, especially in this challenging time for live music. We didn’t do any editing. So you will hear truly handmade music. This album might be a good introduction to our work, and maybe one gets curious about the four studio albums we released before.”

“They take the Swiss zen maximalist/minimalist approach of Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, Sonar, Schnellertollermeier to a different, but utterly logical conclusion. Fabulous stuff. Recommended!” – Steve Feigenbaum, Cuneiform Records

AKKU Quintet is based in Berne (Switzerland), from where they dispense a minimalistic jazz groove to great effect. Drummer Manuel Pasquinelli, who is also responsible for the compositions, founded the band in 2010. Their first concert took place in 2011. Since then, the band has released four studio albums and is playing live regularly. Their latest studio album, “Depart,” was the first one released with 7d Media. Manuel Pasquinelli is also known as the drummer of Sonar, who are collaborating with David Torn and Bill Laswell.

08/03/2022: Porcupine Tree premiere Of The New Day single

Porcupine Tree release Of The New Day (Official Lyric Video), the second track taken from the band’s forthcoming eleventh album, Closure / Continuation, via Music For Nations on 24 June 2022…

Steven Wilson: “Of the New Day is a song of rebirth, emerging from darkness. It sounds deceptively simple, a recognisably atypical Porcupine Tree ballad. That is until you realise that the length of the bars is constantly changing, flipping between bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, to 5/4 to 6/4, 11/4, so that the track never settles into any steady time. It’s what PT can sometimes do really well, come up with a basic idea that’s almost intellectual or mathematical, but carry it off in a way that sounds completely natural and accessible”

Closure / Continuation will be available as a seven track album on standard CD/double vinyl/coloured vinyl or limited cassette. The deluxe LP version comes on audiophile approved crystal clear vinyl as a 3xLP 45rpm boxset with two bonus tracks; the deluxe CD & Blu-Ray boxset comes with three bonus tracks, instrumental versions, and high resolution 96/24 stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos versions of the album, all housed in an exclusive art book.

To coincide with the video single the band have also announced North & South American tour dates in September/October 2022 – United States, Canada, Mexico and Chile – visit the Porcupine Tree Tour Dates Page.

08/03/2022: The Utopia Strong release track from forthcoming album International Treasure

The Utopia Strong release Shepherdess, taken from the trio’s upcoming second album International Treasure, scheduled for release via Rocket Recordings on 5 Junes 2022…

‘International Treasure’’ is the next chapter in a story which only grows more rewarding with every stop along the way – one in which three heads travel together deeper into their own musical journeys, and the resulting alchemical power transmutes its origins into gold. As no less a sage than Andrew Weatherall proclaimed, The Utopia Strong are “gnostic sonics in a nutshell”.

04/03/2022: Pure Reason Revolution premiere New Kind Of Evil

Pure Reason Revolution release the first single from their forthcoming album Above Cirrus, scheduled for release on 6 May 2022, via InsideOut Music. Today sees the release of New Kind Of Evil

“On ‘Above Cirrus’, the band continues many of the musical through lines that fans have come to expect; maintaining a balance between somber reflection and intrepid exploration, leading listeners through a shapeshifting collection of seven tracks that evoke a range of emotions. On the songs ‘Our Prism’ and ‘New Kind of Evil’, the energy reaches magnificent heights of guitar-led catharsis, rivaling the best efforts of acts like Tool and Filter, while offerings in ‘Lucid’ and ‘Dead Butterfly’ meld the group’s keyboard-centric song-structures with vast, epic soundscapes. But, unlike its predecessor, ‘Above Cirrus’ is far from a narrative driven concept record. As Jon confides, each song, while fueled by his personal journeys and the condition of modern times, is truly its own device. Reflecting on the lyricism of the record, he adds:

“Often my writing occupies itself with relationships; how we can be so tender/loving with each other in one instance, days later or even in a few flashes we’re tearing each other apart. The sublime & the savage/vicious. The music reflects this light & shade dynamic shift too. Our world shrinks through lockdowns/restrictions & strain is intensified. However, the end message is one of optimism – affirmation we’ll get to the end of this surreal chapter & be stronger together. Through the turbulence, we’ll help each other through the darkness.”

Pure Reason Revolution along with Gazpacho will be undertaking a short run of European dates in April, including one UK date.
