24/08/2021: Big Big Train announce a series of streaming single releases

In the lead-up to their tours in 2022, Big Big Train announce the first in a new series of streaming single releases. All tracks in the ‘Stay Tuned’ streaming series will be brand new songs. The first song to be released is The Connection Plan, written by Nick D’Virgilio

Nick D’Virgilio comments that The Connection Plan is about connecting with each other. “How our differences are a good thing and what those differences can teach us. The song started with the violin line at the beginning. Once I came up with that, I was off to the races, and the rest of the song took shape rather quickly. Once again, Greg, David, and Rikard took my demo and added such beautiful nuance to the track. With the addition of real violin played by my friend Derek Reeves and Rob Aubrey’s mix, Connection Plan has connected with me and will hopefully connect with the listener too.”

23/08/2021: Tony Kaye launches 1st track from End Of Innocence

Tony Kaye today releases Flight 11 as the first track from his forthcoming debut solo album End Of Innocence on Spirit Of Unicorn Music (distributed via Cherry Red Records).

The former YES keyboard legend was moved to commit his thoughts and feelings to a heartfelt personal musical interpretation following the terrible events of 9/11. End Of Innocence is a requiem for those who lost their lives and all those touched by those horrific events, a powerful and emotional suite, both beautiful and sinister, reflecting the dark forces at work that day.

The drama of that fateful day began when terrorists seized control of American Airlines’ Flight 11 from Boston to LA. This track reflects the struggles on board, portrayed by Jay Schellen (CIRCA, YES) with his dynamic drum solo and the plaintive calls made to the tower by flight attendants Amy Sweeney and Betty Ong, before the plane was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre.

Kaye’s response to 9/11 was to retrieve his keyboards, stored away in his garage for 5 years having retired from the music business, and begin to interpret his feelings in the only way he knew, through his music.

“I’ve been friends with Jay Schellen from YES for a long time,” said Tony Kaye, “and reconnected on the 50th anniversary in 2018 when I came back into the band for a little while. So, I asked him to help on this track depicting the scene inside the planes. I wanted a drum solo – Jay’s just the guy to do that – and it includes the conversations stewardesses had with the tower. It was an emotional track and Jay did great drums on it.”

End Of Innocence is released in CD Format on 10th September 2021 via Spirit Of Unicorn Music (distributed through Cherry Red Records) to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

21/08/2021: Moron Police release the first single from forthcoming EP

Moron Police release the title track from their forthcoming EP The Stranger And The High Tide.

“The Stranger and the Hightide has a western rock-feel. Twangy guitars, Hammond Organ, vintage tape machines, and a decidedly more “live” sound to it.”

Commenting on the release the band say: “The new EP is very different from A Boat on the Sea. Very different, but very cool. It’s a sidequest of sorts, abandoning the oceanic depths for tumbleweed and dust—favouring a more simplistic approach to its instruments and compositions. The truth of the matter is; we have far too many songs flying about, and many of them sound too radically different to feature on one of our main albums. But they still deserve a home, so they will be released as EPs. There will be many more EPs in the future, but this particular one has a connection to our next main album—a connection we will not divulge here!”

18/08/2021: Caravan announce It’s None Of Your Business studio album

Caravan - It’s None Of Your Business

Caravan have announced their new album ‘It’s None Of Your Business’ to be released 21st October 2021 via Madfish.

It’s None Of Your Business is their first album since Paradise Filter, released in 2013. The new album features nine new songs plus one instrumental track influenced, according to the band, by the events and restrictions placed on society over the past 18 months.

The album was recorded, as restrictions allowed, ‘in the old-fashioned way’ between 24th June and 4th July 2021 at Rimshot Studio, Bredgar near Sittingbourne. “Sitting round in a circle having eye to eye contact, a large sound room was required,” Pye Hastings explained. “I much prefer this method because you can bounce ideas off each other as they occur, and voice encouragement when the whole thing begins to click.”

“And it is much more rewarding to be able to throw insults at each other in person rather than down a telephone line or via email. This is something we are all very experienced at, believe me!”

This togetherness characterises It’s None Of Your Business with Caravan’s trademark warmth and humour and, also, a sensitivity reflecting the times in which we are living. Sitting among Caravan’s typically whimsical tales Down From London and If I Was To Fly sit the heartfelt and poignant Spare A Thought and Every Precious Little Thing which looks forward to a return to normality.

“’Spare a Thought’ is a song that I hope will jog people to remember those unfortunate people caught up in the pandemic,” Hastings explains. “‘All those people who denied’ refers to the idiots who don’t follow the scientific advice. I get angry about that and the line ‘Sure are interesting times’ refers to an old Chinese saying: ‘may you live in interesting times’”

“Lyrics can sometimes be my Achilles Heel, trying to find anything meaningful to write about. But sitting in front of a blank screen with a pandemic raging all around, it was hard not to be influenced by the dreadful events going on. The lockdown certainly focused the mind when it came to writing the lyrics.”

The band will be touring the UK in October and will be performing track from the new album…

13/08/2021: Tony Patterson & Doug Melbourne sign to BEM for new album

Bad Elephant Music announce that Tony Patterson and Doug Melbourne will be joining BEM for the release of their second album, Dark Before Dawn, scheduled for early 2022.

The duo have joined forces on a number of projects in the past, notably as members of Genesis tribute band ReGenesis. Doug has also contributed to Tony’s other projects, including his solo album Equations of Meaning, and his acclaimed collaboration with Brendan Eyre Northlands.

Their debut album as a duo, The Divided, released in 2019, was Tony and Doug’s first collaboration as co-writers on a completely original project…”. Leo Trimming remarking in his review for TPA: The Divide is excellently written and a lovingly crafted album of classy melodic and accessible rock songs.

“Fans of ‘The Divide’ will immediately recognize the style and polish of the new album. ‘Dark Before Dawn’ takes the songs to a new level with more ambitious concepts and a sound that can only be described as “Epic”. Building on the electronic arrangements of ‘The Divide’, there is a greater emphasis on acoustic instruments and live playing in the studio.

Lyrically there is a similar mix of wry observation about the state of the world, though this time with more personal reflection, and a greater emphasis on emotions – love, hope and despair are all present in these songs.

‘Dark Before Dawn’ will be released in the first quarter of 2022, with pre-orders available from the BEM website this side of Christmas.”

10/08/2021: The Paradox Twin reveal first single from forthcoming album

The Paradox Twin will release their second album on 8th October 2021 through the White Star Records label. Today sees the release of the first single Wake Vortex

Commenting on the track Danny Sorrell said: “It was wonderful to be able to duet with Nicole on this song as she certainly brought the emotion in to it that I was looking for. We’ve been itching to get the new music out but have had so many delays due to what has been happening in the world over the last 18 months; however, we are pleased with what we have achieved despite the barriers we have had to overcome. The strength of the band we have now, combined with the mixing talents of John Mitchell and the video skills of Miles Skarin have hopefully come together to produce something that fans both old and new will find special”.

The band have a number of live dates scheduled in August & September (with Kyros).

Mostly Autumn reveal their latest album, Graveyard Star, will be released through Mostly Autumn Records on 24 September 2021.

Bryan Josh comments on Graveyard Star: “The album is a deep, heartfelt reflection of how we were feeling through 2020 / 2021, a documentation of living through the pandemic. Although a lot of the sadness and otherworldliness was personal to us, I’m sure many will relate to the content. There was simply no other inspiration present, only to write and put into music life as we felt it.

“We truly believe that the song-to-song strength of this work could be our finest to date, it has been 18 months in the making and the longest studio schedule we have ever experienced. The icing on the cake comes from Troy Donockley of Nightwish and Chris Leslie of Fairport Convention who guest beautifully on the album.”

09/08/2021: Transatlantic announce North America, European & UK tour dates for 2022

Transatlantic have announced tour dates for North America, Europe and one UK date. The tour is in support of the band’s The Absolute Universe album released earlier this year.

TransatlanticTour Poster 2022

Mike Portnoy had this to say about the upcoming tour: “Between releasing our latest album in the middle of a worldwide pandemic & shutdown, and the already difficult task of trying to align our different schedules even in the most normal of circumstances, it was uncertain if Transatlantic would ever get to play any shows in support of The Absolute Universe.

“But now with the world slowly re-opening and the band already committing to a few one-off appearances in 2022 (Cruise To The Edge, Morsefest and a Festival in Romania), we’re excited to announce we were able to wrangle up some headlining shows surrounding these one-offs! (April in North America and July in EU/UK)

“These are the ONLY shows we will be doing in support of The Absolute Universe so if we can’t make it to your area, it may be worth traveling to come see us and share these special shows with us. While we wish we could do a full proper tour, getting to play ANY shows for this album is an unexpected treat that we weren’t sure would ever happen…so better late than never!”

08/08/2021: September release for Lee Abraham’s new album Only Human

Lee Abraham - Only HumanLee Abraham continues his annual run of album releases with his stunning new 9th solo album called ‘Only Human’, released exactly 1 year after the extremely well received ‘Harmony/Synchronicity‘ in September 2020. The album will again be released on F2 Music and features Peter Jones, Marc Atkinson, Gerald Mulligan, Mark Spencer and Rob Arnold.

Inspired by world events of the past 2 years, Lee, who also plays guitar for veteran UK prog band Galahad, has written a thought provoking collection of songs that examine how we process life and our own fit within it.

“Many of us have experienced feelings of isolation and inadequacy over the past 18 months, like never before” Lee explains. “Some people have used this to re-examine where their life is going, what’s important to them and perhaps come up with their own theories on life in general and why we’re all here!”

The album centrepiece is the epic opening song ‘Counting Down’. Clocking in at around 30 minutes, the song progresses through different musical styles and arrangements, commenting on the human pretencity to wish life away, just counting down the years.

“I am extremely proud of ‘Counting Down’, it’s the most complete ‘progressive rock epic’, if I can use that term, that I have written. I love melody and I have written some of my most memorable melodies in this song and using Peter Jones for the lead vocals, he understood completely the feel I was going for. I hope people enjoy the end result, it was quite a journey!”

‘Only Human’ is released by F2 Music on the Festival Music label, was recorded, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Lee Abraham at Dockside Studio, Hampshire, UK. Drums recorded and engineered by Gerald Mulligan at Tollgate Cottage, Hampshire, UK. Artwork by Robin Armstrong.

06/08/2021: Tom Slatter announces the release of his sixth solo album

Bad Elephant Music announce the release of Escape, the sixth solo album from singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tom Slatter. By way of a preview the track Rats is available on Bandcamp

Escape is the follow up to 2019’s Demon. The new album features Mike Cairns from the Tom Slatter Band on the percussion parts throughout, with Keith Buckman (Tom Slatter Band and The Far Meadow) grounding the album with his impeccable bass contributions. Gareth Cole has a delectable guitar solo in the track Rats. BEM aficionados may recognize Gareth from his work with the Tom Slatter Band, Fractal Mirror, his collaborations with Mike Kershaw, and Whitewater. Graham Keane, guitarist with Vicious Head Society, also makes an appearance on the lead track Time Stands Still, giving the song a steady pulse to build the intensity. Ben Bell (Gandalf’s Fist) continues to impress with his keyboard skills in Going Nowhere.

Reluctantly, David Elliott from Bad Elephant Music touts Tom’s praises: “Another album from the ever-prolific Mr. Slatter! This time he has gone all prog on us. Long songs, unusual time signatures, and even the mighty Mellotron feature on this excellent record!”

Tom Slatter adds his eclectic perspective. “I’ve always been an indoors kid. Escapism, whether books, music, or computer games, has always meant a lot to me. With the awful year we’ve all had, I felt like an album full of high energy rock songs about spaceships was the escapism we needed.”

Escape will be released on 1st October 2021. Pre-ordering is available HERE.

06/08/2021: Mariana Semkina to release new EP in November

Following her 2020 debut solo album, Sleepwalking, Iamthemorning vocalist Mariana Semkina returns with her new EP Disillusioned, scheduled for release on 1st October 2021. Today sees the trailer release for her forthcoming EP, combining dark folk with elements of electronica and continues the evolution of Mariana as a solo artist. …

The Disillusioned EP features 5 tracks comprised of 3 original new songs alongside 2 covers sung in Icelandic and Hungarian, in which multiple layers of Mariana’s vocals combine with ambient electronica to create an ethereal choir like effect.

The title ‘Disillusioned’ is partly a reflection of Mariana’s state of mind while writing the EP alongside a desire to have more control over her own work. This has led to her decision to self-release the EP having previously released her debut on Kscope adding, “having full control over your creations is quite precious and beautiful so i will enjoy it while i have energy to do absolutely everything myself to bring my projects to life. It’s a lot of work and a lot of responsibility but neither one scares me, i’m used to both.”

02/08/2021: Rare Gentle Giant footage from 1980 unearthed

Series of 8mm clips of Gentle Giant on the Civilian tour in 1980 from Cleveland have been synced to live music from the tour…

Gentle Giant have released a series of 8mm film clips from a show believed to be in Cleveland, Ohio from May 1980 on the band’s tour for their final album Civilian, just a month or two before the band split for good.

The clips, originally recorded with no sound, came to light on The Genesis Museum YouTube page (the same people responsible for restoring the 1973 Bataclan footage of Genesis) and have since been synced to audio with a live recording from the same tour, using the tracks For Nobody and Number One by Gentle Giant fan CJ Irwin.

“I got the video synced as best as I could with bits of the two songs featured,” explains Irwin. “For the audio I went with the Toad’s Place concert recording, as the source for its unparalleled quality compared to other recordings from the tour.”
