30/07/2021: Steve Howe’s Homebrew 7 released today
YES guitarist Steve Howe releases the seventh edition of his Homebrew album series on 30th July via HoweSound. Homebrew 7 marks the 25th anniversary of the first album in Howe’s Homebrew collection.
The Homebrew series typically features recordings from Steve Howe’s home archive of demos and tracks, originally recorded for one of his many solo or group projects with YES, ASIA, ABWH or GTR. Homebrew 7 differs slightly as none of the tracks have previously been released in any form and there are no plans for any to be rerecorded in the future.
“It’s my usual concept about my own home recordings that I get attached to but this is a different approach to Homebrew. These ones have never been part of other music that’s been released, it’s unheard music from many points of view.
“Homebrew is an outlet that allows me to flex different opportunities and this came along where I felt I had a considerable amount of music I wasn’t going to keep trying to push out there in other guises or re-record myself, so I thought I’d put out the tracks that I like. It’s an interesting mix and, like Homebrew usually is, from different dimensions, from 1978 and goes up to 2016. It’s a kind of selection of music that’s been hidden, from that period, that I thought ‘Oh, to hell with it, I’ll put it out.’ So, I’ve just had fun with it.
“Many are things I’ve enjoyed saving until the right moment,” says Howe, “and the Homebrew series allows this. Some tracks have matured with my nurturing but others have been recently rediscovered.”
This collection includes tracks across Howe’s extensive range of playing styles. Each of the 21 tracks is dated and accompanied by Howe’s background notes and details on instrumentation. Most of the tracks are Howe’s solo recordings with occasional contributions from Dylan Howe and Virgil Howe on drums and Phil Spalding on bass guitar (Half Way). The booklet includes the lyrics for the four vocal tracks and is also illustrated by some of Howe’s delightfully atmospheric photography.

28/07/2021: Kosmogon to release debut album next month
Mässan is the debut album from Swedish instrumentalists Kosmogon, a compelling duo featuring classically trained pianist Sophie Linder and musical collaborator Nicklas Barker, best known as composer, guitarist, Mellotronist, and singer in Swedish progressive giants Anekdoten. Today the duo have streamed the albums title track Mässan…
“The two have come together with an eclectic range of organic keyboards, including the Arp Odyssey, a real Mellotron, a Farfisa organ, and a Logan string machine to create a tapestry of contemplative minimalist pastoral soundscapes and hallucinogenic visions, redolent of early electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel’s Manuel Göttsching. Two evocative pieces, Mässan (25.00) and Somnus (22.49), are spread across two vinyl sides incorporating grand themes, suited to the format.”
Mässan will be released on 27 August 2021 via Tonbad Grammofon
28/07/2021: Dream Theater announce new studio album to be released in October
Dream Theater have announced their new album, A View From The Top Of The Worldwill be released via InsideOut Music/Sony Music on 22 October 2021.
Dream Theater – comprised of James LaBrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myung and Mike Mangini – was in the middle of a sold-out world tour in support of their last release Distance Over Time and the 20th anniversary of Scenes From A Memory when a Global Pandemic brought the world to a stop. The musicians found themselves at home with LaBrie in Canada and the rest of the group in the States. As fate would have it, they’d just finished construction on DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters) —a combination live recording studio, rehearsal space, control room, equipment storage, and creative hive. With LaBrie in Canada, he initially wrote with the band via ZOOM on a monitor in DTHQ. In March 2021, he flew down to New York, quarantined, and recorded his vocals face-to-face with Petrucci. The album ultimately threaded together lean and uncompromising hooks with tried-and-true technical proficiency.
“We just love to play our instruments,” observes Petrucci. “That never goes away. I love to be creative, write, and exercise that part of my mind. We’ve been able to do this for a long time, and we don’t take it for granted. Whenever we get together, we know we can’t disappoint ourselves or our fans, so we manage to try even harder.”
“We approach every album like it’s our first,” adds LaBrie. “It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop.”

27/07/2021: Mattias Olsson’s Molesome announce new studio album
Mattias Olsson reveals that his sixth studio album, Aftonland will be released on 9th August 2021.
Mattias comments: “It’s a sort of slow moving record. It’s free of computers, copy and paste or autotune. An album that is perfect for those warm summer nights with a suitable beverage” Have a listen…!
“The start of the 6th Molesome album Aftonland has a very specific time and place….The 9th of January 2021 at my families summerhouse on Gällstaö just outside of Stockholm. Sitting in front of the fire place listening to records, no computers screens blaring or moblie phones buzzing and squeaking. I had just released Are you there? and felt that I wanted to do something very very different. As Are you there? was based around rhythms and sequences I wanted to make an album that would be more fluid texturally almost devoid of rhythm and a lot slower. The idea for Aftonland was formed right there and then.”
24/07/2021: Confusion Field’s Tomi Kankainen talks to TPA
And that is one of the things I found most appealing about your sound! Confusion Field is not a straight forward prog metal band. There’s a lot of pop in the mix, as well as rock and metal. I really like the mix, but a lot of prog fans are highly resistant to pop. For some, it’s the name that must never be spoken. It’s all a bit odd to me. Do you think having the pop element to your music could be a handicap? Or is it not something you even think about at all?
I love pop music! Growing up in the ’80s I fell in love with the sounds and production styles of that era. I was a metalhead back then but I liked the melodic stuff better than the aggressive. I fell in love with progressive rock in the early ’90s so all the “classic” prog albums were already released. I had such a vast back catalogue of all this music to explore, so naturally I gravitated towards those who had the sound I was used to hearing. Call me a heretic, but I prefer the ’80s albums from all the big names in prog. Surely there are exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking that’s the way my ears are wired. I like to have the pop hooks in my prog. On the other hand, I enjoy the atmospheric post rock too. Not many pop hooks there… I really haven’t thought of the pop elements as some sort of handicap.

23/07/2021: Yes launch The Ice Bridge video – the first music from their new studio album
YES recently announced they will release their new studio album The Quest on InsideOut Music/Sony Music on 1st October 2021 – (TPA article further down on this page). Today sees the release of the first single The Ice Bridge (Official Video)…
The album was produced by Steve Howe. “Much of the music was written in late 2019 with the rest in 2020. We commissioned several orchestrations to augment and enhance the overall sound of these fresh new recordings, hoping that our emphasis on melody, coupled with some expansive instrumental solo breaks, keeps up the momentum for our listeners,” said Steve.
The Quest was recorded across the globe. The sessions took place in the UK with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes & Jon Davison, while Alan White & Billy Sherwood got together in the studio in the US. “Billy Sherwood and myself did all the rhythm sections, bass and drum, in America,” says Alan White, “down in Los Angeles at Uncle Studios, where he works a lot. It helps when you’ve got a good place to work,” Alan laughs, “and Billy’s really good on the recording desk, so we got things down relatively quickly. I spent quite a while studying the music before I went down to LA so I was prepared.”
The Quest is released on 1st October 2021.

20/07/2021: Tony Kaye announces his debut album End Of Innocence
Having retired from music in 1996, Kaye was moved, by the events of 11th September 2001, to commit his thoughts and feelings to a heartfelt personal musical interpretation.
End Of Innocence is a requiem for those who lost their lives and all those touched by the horrific events of 9/11. Primarily orchestral, End Of Innocence is a powerful and emotional suite that is both beautiful and sinister, reflecting the dark forces at work that day. It guides the listener through the day and touches on the response, to reach a hope that peace and calm may prevail.
As did many millions, Kaye watched the horrors of 9/11 unfold on his TV screen. “The next day I unpacked my keyboards for the first time in a long time,” Kaye recalls. “I didn’t know what I was going to do. It was one of those things that happened, inspiration on a musical level.”
The suite begins the night before 9/11 but, as Kaye’s wife Dani Torchia sings an innocent lullaby, menacing storms are gathering. The beautiful 9/11 Overture was the first piece Kaye composed, the following day. “I had no recording equipment, just an 8-track cassette recorder and some of those recordings became what you hear now.”
Kaye continues to create vivid images of New York City life and a vibrancy around The World Trade Centre (285 Fulton Street) before the terror begins and captures the fears of those on the planes, Flight 11 depicting the conversations stewardesses had with the tower. The track includes a powerful drum solo by Kaye’s friend Jay Schellen (CIRCA, YES) reflecting the struggles onboard.
Following the collapse of the towers, Dani Torchia sings her lament Sweetest Dreams and the album looks at the Aftermath and the Heroes before focusing on the response. “I wanted it, musically, to be about that day,” Kaye says, “but I felt compelled to extend it to deal with the repercussions of what happened. Musically, it was quite challenging to do the battle scene and then the Hope And Triumph, a patriotic anthem and the consequences of war. Ground Zero is the hope for the future, the rebuilding.”
The artwork for the album has been created by Roger Dean, known for his work with YES and ASIA, powerful imagery reflecting the journey the music takes.
Tony Kaye, Spirit of Unicorn Music and Cherry Red Records are donating 10% of all profits from End of Innocence to https://www.garysinisefoundation.org. The charity supports veterans, defenders and first responders in times of hardship.
Pre-ordering is available HERE. End Of Innocence will be officially released on 10 September 2021.

19/07/2021: Robby Steinhardt ~ RIP
Robby Steinhardt founding member, violinist and singer with Kansas, passed away on 17 July 2021, following complications of acute pancreatitis. Steinhardt played with the band from 1973 to 1982 and from 1997 to 2006.
His wife Cindy released the following statement on Facebook:
It is with an extremely heavy broken heart that I have to announce to the world, we have lost one of the most incredible people of our time…. Robby Steinhardt has passed away.
“Our final journey started May 13 when Robby was admitted into the hospital with acute pancreatitis. Later that night he went into acute septic shock and was placed on life support. Outlook was very grave as he wasn’t expected to live through the night.
Like the true fighter he is, he managed to spring back much to the amazement of his entire medical staff. Once again he cheated death and the road to recovery had begun. 65 days later, on the day he was to be released from medical care and move to the rehabilitation center to build his strength, his body had other plans. A fever set in, blood pressure became uncontrollable, the sepsis reared it’s ugly head again…”

16/07/2021: Amanda Lehmann to release debut solo album in August
After a musical career spanning over three decades (and known latterly for her musical involvement with Steve Hackett), singer/songwriter/guitarist Amanda Lehmann will release her debut solo album Innocence and Illusion. The album, which features 9 songs, sees a fusion of prog, rock, ballads, and elements of jazz-blues. Innocence and Illusion takes us on a journey through magical childhood worlds and hard-edged realities; emotionally touching us at every turn.
With the lyrics and music composed by Amanda Lehmann, she has welcomed the keyboard and engineering skills of Nick Magnus for seven of the songs, with Roger King on two tracks, and also featuring guest appearances by Rob Townsend on sax, and Steve Hackett on lead and acoustic guitars and harmonica.
Amanda comments: “I am incredibly proud of this album. There is a wide variety of music, all weaving around the central thread of life’s journey; the twists and turns and all the stops along the way, the innocence, the illusions, the hopes and dreams, reflecting on what is, what was, what could be. These songs have been bursting to be heard, and I hope that they speak to everyone who listens to them.”
“This song was inspired by my mother’s journey into and through dementia, and I wanted to reach out to anyone who has been affected by this horrible disease. Music can be cathartic, and it is my hope that sharing my experiences and emotions in this tune may briefly hold the hands of others in similar situations and give some comfort.”
Innocence And Illusion will be released on 20 August 2021.
16/07/2021: Haiku Salut to release new album The Hill, The Light, The Ghost in August
Derbyshire Dales “instrumental dream-pop-post-folk-neo-everything” trio Haiku Salut will release their fifth album, The Hill, The Light, The Ghost via Secret Name records on 27 August 2021. Taken from the album I Dreamed I Was Awake for a Very Long Time…
A beautiful study of ghosts and memory, the gestation of the record began when Haiku Salut’s Sophie Barkerwood was given a Tascam field recorder. “I carried it around with me in case anything interesting happened. I guess I wanted to capture little pieces of the world in the same way we all take photographs,” explains Sophie. “It wasn’t immediately apparent that we would begin to use these sounds as the architecture for an album but as our writing process evolved the textures of these memories became a bank of inspiration.”
“We then began actively searching for ghosts in the world and framing the songs around their qualities,” Sophie continues. “Gathering recordings, removing them from their context and building worlds around them. Capturing and preserving personal experiences, and evoking vivid spaces. You could say the record is a miniature exploration of sound in relation to memory. Each piece is intimately connected to a place in time.”
Musically, the album marries the expansive vision of their third album, ‘There Is No Elsewhere’, which celebrated identity and community, with the darker, more contemplative feel of their fourth album, the trio’s original soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s ‘The General’. Building on the lessons learned working on ‘The General’, ‘The Hill, The Light, The Ghost’ is a cohesive suite, nine songs that combine to tell a larger story – that of experience and memory, of precious moments and echoes of past lives.

16/07/2021: Trifecta to release debut album on Kscope in August
Trifecta, a new addition to the Kscope roster, features 3 of the contemporary music scene’s most lauded and revered musicians – bassist and songwriter Nick Beggs, keyboardist extraordinaire Adam Holzman and completing the line-up, Craig Blundell – one of the world’s most celebrated drummers.
Having performed together as part of Steven Wilson’s band, the three would jam together after soundchecks, forming what they referred to as “jazz club” and from these sessions the fledgling ideas for Fragments were born, Nick Beggs comments “after the last tour with Steven finished, we had a handful of tracks ready to work on and as we moved through our various separate projects we agreed to work on Trifecta.”
The record primarily leans toward a fusion of jazz rock, imaginatively described by Beggs as “Fission! It’slike Fusion but less efficient and more dangerous ..with fall out.” and being mainly instrumental with the exception of one track, the wonderfully titled and first single “Pavlov’s Dog Killed Schrodinger’s Cat”. Released in May 2021…
The lyrics of which, Beggs states “are written from the perspective of a layman trying to understand quantum mechanics…and failing”.

15/07/2021: AVAWAVES to release second album in October
Contemporary cinematic instrumental duo AVAWAVES, comprising of Anna Phoebe and Aisling Brouwer, are set to follow their expansive 2019 debut album Waves with a new album Chrysalis, released 8 October via One Little Independent.
AVAWAVES are rooted in cinematic narratives, evoking emotional journeys of the heart and mind.
“Their second full-length album masterfully layers ethereal keys over swelling strings and pulsating synths in a series of euphoric epics. Sublime, celestial textures ebb and flow, building towards far-reaching climaxes where everything comes together in effortless, natural harmony. The bold expressive palette reveals the influence of surrealist artists such as Katharina Grosse and Hilma af Klint, as well as the films that shape their worlds, like Georges Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon. It brims with energy and light, illuminating the power of dreams.”

13/07/2021: Big Big Train release third single from forthcoming studio album
Ahead of the release later this month of their new studio album, Common Ground, Big Big Train release the third single from the album – The Strangest Times…
The Strangest Times is the third track to be taken from Big Big Train’s forthcoming album Common Ground, which will be released through English Electric was written by singer David Longdon, sees the band tackling the impact of the recent Covid lockdowns, the separation of loved ones, the passage of time, deaths of people close to the band.
“After the death of a collaborator Judy Dyble in July 2020, I time spent shielding with an ill relative,” explains Longdon. “With everything that was happening around me and for the world with the relentless doomwatch tone of the news broadcasts, I spoke with Greg. I said I couldn’t just be writing songs about historical figures and scenarios. I felt that I needed to write about the here and now. In The Strangest Times, I’m writing very directly about what has been happening globally and how I feel about it. The screaming media broadcasts made me want to avoid watching or listening to the news, but I made myself read the latest news once a day.
“I felt better when I was out of the house and walking by the brook and then visiting Watnall Wood in Nottinghamshire. I have always admired the directness of Pete Townshend’s lyrics, and that very much fitted the tone of the song. The music has a driving piano feel to it. I wanted it to sound like an Elton John rocker with that pushing rhythm piano playing that he does.
“When Rikard and I spoke about this song and I mentioned Elton John, he referred to Grey Seal from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road as external stimuli. That track directly inspired Rikard’s swift piano arpeggios. Dave Foster played electric guitar on this song, and when we met at Real World in November 2020, I said that I wanted the electric part to be Pete Townshend-esque, and Dave knew exactly what I was pushing for.”
Common Ground will be released will be released through English Electric Recordings on 30 July 2021

06/07/2021: John Lawton ~ RIP
“It is with deep regret that we share the devastating and tragic news of the sudden and totally unexpected passing of John Lawton on 29 June 2021. Contrary to reports, there was no illness involved, which makes his passing incomprehensible. He went peacefully with his wife at his side.
John will be greatly missed.”
John Lawton passed away on 29 June 2021 at the age of 74.
Mick Box commented: “John was a big part of the Heep family, and on stage when he was covering for Bernie, who was having hospital treatment at the time, he said over the microphone “you can check out, but you never leave Heep.”
“That was our John and he was one of the good guys.”
“On a personal note we had some fantastic times in Heep, and some fantastic times too outside of Heep.”

05/07/2021: Rick Laird ~ RIP
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Rick Laird on Sunday 4 July 2021. Born in Dublin in 1941, Rick was perhaps best known as the bassist, founding member with the Mahavishnu Orchestra between 1971 to 1973. During this time Rick recorded three albums with the band: The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire and Between Nothingness & Eternity. However his recording & performance career also included Brian Auger Buddy Rich, Wes Montgomery, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Benny Golson – to name just a few…
John McLaughlin posted on Twitter: “RIP brother Rick Laird. What great memories we have . Miss you!!!”
Billy Cobham posted on his Facebook Page: “To all who were close to the M.O. you knew that the most dependable person in that band was the bass player. He played what was necessary to keep the rest of us from going off our musical rails. He was my rock and allowed me to play and explore musical regions that I would not have been able to navigate without him having my back! Rick Laird bid this world good bye at sun up this morning. Already I miss his likeness and voice that was featured in the powerful quietness and authority he projected on and off stage. The body is going but the persona will remain as an influence on whatever I play for the rest of my days. I miss him already.”
Rick Laird passed away on 4 July 2021 at the age of 80.

03/07/2021: Steve Hackett reveals first music from Surrender Of Silence
Steve Hackett releases his latest studio album Surrender of Silence on 10th September 2021, via InsideOut Music. The album features 11 new songs as Steve has been working hard through Lockdown and, for the first time, has completed two studio albums for release within the same year! Today he launches the video for Wingbeats, the first single from the new album., directed by Paul Gosling.
“Lockdown cobwebs are blown away in one fell-swoop here!” says Steve Hackett. “With the monster rhythm section of Jonas, Craig, Nick and Phil along with Rob’s soaring sax and bass clarinet, Nad, Amanda and myself on vocals, Roger’s darkly powerful organ and my guitar, we plunge full-pelt into that wild release of energy.”
Our journey takes us from the classical orchestrations of Russia (Natalia) to the plains of Africa (Wingbeats) to mysterious Eastern shores (Shanghai To Samarkand), all via the ocean’s depths (Relaxation Music for Sharks (featuring feeding frenzy)). The Devil’s Cathedral pools the talents of Hackett’s entire touring band and features King’s atmospheric Gothic organ and a powerhouse rhythm display from Blundell and Reingold.
Hackett’s vocals have never been bettered and his duet with Amanda Lehmann adds emotion to Scorched Earth a lament for the environmental horrors facing our planet. Throughout Hackett’s guitars add a rich tapestry of colour with soaring solos and intricate weaving melodies.
“It’s a ‘no holds barred’ album,” adds Hackett, “riding that wave, unleashing those demons, dreams and nightmares, all crashing together over the shore.
“I enjoyed the power of this album allowing my guitar to scream in joy and rage… and once again flying across those oceans to distant lands. It’s terrific to connect creatively with musicians from far flung places, particularly when we’ve all been unable to meet. We all have a voice in our cacophony of sound and we cry out together in the Surrender of Silence!”
Surrender of Silence is scheduled for 10th September 2021 as a Limited Edition CD+Blu-ray Mediabook in hardcover slipcase, Standard CD | Gatefold 2LP+CD & LP-Booklet | Digital Album via InsideOut Music.

02/07/2021: Kristoffer Gildenlöw to release first music from forthcoming studio album
Kristoffer Gildenlöw invites us on a dark journey with his new song and video Falling, Floating, Sinking. This epic, theatrical track is the forerunner of his new album Let Me Be A Ghost to be released 3 September 2021. Listen and watch Falling, Floating, Sinking (official video)…
This is foremost Kristoffer’s darkest musical journey in his artistic realm, as this album is not for the fainthearted as it is confronting and revealing of our own shortcomings. With painting soundscapes, dynamics, contrasts and his signature storytelling, Kristoffer takes us to the deepest, most eerie places of the mind. These are stories about giving up or carrying on, falling down or standing strong. About choices on the edge of life and death, about the ghosts who roam both realms.

02/07/2021: The Osiris Club to release third studio album in August
Bad Elephant Music announce the release of The Green Chapel, the latest album The Osiris Club.
“The third album by the Osiris Club is a journey into the furthest reaches of psychedelia, prog, doom-folk and genres yet to be named. With the addition of acoustic guitars and Mellotron, the band’s trademark riffage has expanded to encompass influences from British folk horror, classic rock and progressive sounds from the 1960s to the present day.
Unsurprisingly, the ghosts of history lie heavy over this music. Inspired in part by medieval tales of headless knights, blind hares, wild hunts by moonlight and snow-choked English landscapes, the lyrics conjure a world of mysterious powers spilling into reality and ancient forces waiting to be unleashed. Invoking authors such as Arthur Machen and MR James, the musical content faithfully mirrors this magical summoning of energies both benign and infernal.
Decide which path you wish to take!”
The Osiris Club’s The Green Chapel will be released on 20th August 2021.
