31/07/2020: Jon Gomm Announces New Album The Faintest Idea For Release on Kscope on 16th October 2020
The Blackpool-born singer-songwriter released his debut album Hypertension in 2003. Things changed for Jon with his single Passionflower racking up millions of views on YouTube and other media platforms in 2012 – with Stephen Fry describing him on mainstream television as someone “playing the guitar in a way I’d never seen it played before” and “an all-round genius”. Follow up album Secrets Nobody Keeps arrived in 2013, and now The Faintest Idea is set for release this October.
Jon comments: “I didn’t realise that my songs were worth anything beyond the crazy guitar playing. When people started getting my lyrics tattooed on them, I had to accept that they’re not doing that because they’re fans of percussive guitar.”
The Faintest Idea contrasts the warmth of Gomm’s acoustic articulation with the more icy textures of synth parts provided by Australian musician Andy Sorenson. “Andy has taken my raw, intimate solo acoustic performances, and placed them in an artificially expanded landscape of his own creation. I feel like I’m playing a gig, but the venue is a synthetic reality dreamworld. I strum a chord, and it bounces off a cyan cloud releasing a shower of notes, I hit another, and it echoes through a crystal chamber” says Gomm.
The album earned its title through the notion that all of us, to some extent, are just The Faintest Idea. The singer/guitarist notes how that everything is made out of vibrating strings of probability, and it’s this scientific and spiritual meaning – as well as the more literal translation of total guesswork – that felt like the perfect summation of album number four… “It’s an enigmatic title,” smiles Gomm. “There’s a fine line between a metaphor and a pun, so I guess it dances on that.”
The album is complemented by the delicate hand drawn pen and ink cover art created by Lee Zimmerman.
The Faintest Idea is due to be released on 16th October on CD, double gatefold LP with D-side artwork etching, digital and as a stunning limited edition deluxe 3 disc hardback book edition which will feature – CD1 – The Faintest Idea album, CD 2 – The Naked Artist Mix – a stripped back version of the album; a DVD containing 6 exclusive performances filmed in a medieval church, guitar technique presentations, a 35 minute Jon Gomm interview, song description videos and The Faintest Idea in high resolution stereo audio. The book will feature Lee Zimmerman illustrations, song descriptions, handwritten lyrics and full guitar tablature for the song “Check You’re Still Breathing”. 29/07/2020: …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead announce three livestreams
“…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead came up with the plan for these livestreams when faced with the reality that touring in 2020 was no longer possible. Earlier this year the band released their critically acclaimed 10th studio album X: The Godless Void and Other Stories and embarked on what was going to be a year of touring to celebrate the new LP as well as their 25th anniversary. All this came to a grinding halt in mid-March and with the pandemic wreaking havoc in the US and beyond, Trail of Dead decided to create three full-band livestream performances for their fans that would also provide some financial assistance to the venues and record stores that have supported the band throughout their career and in 2020, when these folks most need it.
The upcoming livestreams by …Trail of Dead will present a unique one-hour set each week built around requests by fans for a handful of tracks rarely played live if at all and of course some classic live favorites to round out the sets.
The live streamed shows will begin with the July 31st US Live Set at 8pm CST, followed by the August 7th UK/EU Live Set at 8pm GMT +1 and culminating with the August 14th In the Studio set at 8pm CST. For the July 31st livestream, Trail of Dead is donating 20% of ticket sales to the venues they played and were set to play in 2020 in the US. They’ve also created exclusive merchandise for the event that will become available that same day. For the August 14th livestream, 20% of proceeds are going toward select US independent record stores including all 34 in the Coalition of Independent Music Stores along with several AIMS stores, namely End Of An Era in Austin, TX, Luna Music in Indianapolis, IN, Young Ones in Kutztown, PA and Daddy Kool in St. Petersburg, FL.
A direct link for all three livestreams is here: www.trailofdead.com/livestream
The first two of these performances will be in conjunction with Safehouse in Austin, who have been hosting local livestreams for the past four years, well before the end of the world as we know it happened. In keeping with the strangeness of our current global zeitgeist they will be performing in the same space they’ve been holding rehearsals, to give our fans an intimate glimpse into their current reality.
The third and final set in the series will be performed on the sound stage of the Mosaic Sound Collective, the same location where …Trail of Dead recorded their last album X: The Godless Void and Other Stories. The Mosaic is a non-profit known as an important creative focus in the Austin area, having hosted many symposiums and workshops for people in the entertainment, performance and production world. With the launch of a new streaming venue the Mosaic continues to be an important creative hub of the band’s community, and …Trail are very proud to be taking part in the first round of these. This performance will be engineered by the album’s producer and technical mastermind Charles Godfrey.

27/07/2020: Moody Blues John Lodge releases new single In These Crazy Times (Isolation Mix) Featuring Vocals from Jon Davison
John Lodge bass guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for The Moody Blues has released a new single In These Crazy Times (Isolation mix).
Watch John chatting about and performing some of the track here:
You can Listen and buy the track here : https://johnlodge.hearnow.com
John recorded the track in his home studio in Florida and he performed vocals and guitar and using GarageBand – keyboards and drums. Joining John on the song are his wife, Kirsten and son, Kristian, both of whom have never recorded before. John was also delighted to have Jon Davison, of YES, add backing vocals and harmonies.
John says: In 1967 “The Moody Blues” recorded Days of Future Passed, and we were in the studio in lockdown 24 hours a day creating an album that changed my life. Being in lockdown now reminds me of the creativity and solitude that took place during that period of my life. So I have taken the opportunity, given by this lockdown period, to write and record a new song about these difficult day – days that stretched into weeks and months. When the pandemic came I had just finished up my US tour and the Rock and Romance cruise and within three days my wife and I were stranded. Music is my life, and without a studio (or my band), I decided to perfect my use of GarageBand to create all the instruments, and record my guitars and vocals in my home studio.
As I believe we are all in this together, I thought what a great idea to involve all of my family. My wife Kirsten is singing backing vocals (for the first time!), my son Kristian is playing Lead Guitar, his wife, Inga, took the photo for the cover (with social distancing!), Jon Davison, from the band Yes, joined me on vocals, and Emily, my daughter is managing the whole thing. The track was recorded at my home and Kristian and Jon added their parts in their homes, before we sent it to Ray Nesbit, my Front of House Sound Engineer for him to mix at his home studio. It truly is an Isolation Mix. My wish is that we can all be together again soon, and then I hope that my 10,000 Light Years Band and I can get together and make a Freedom Mix.
I hope you all can relate to this song as another step in life’s strange and mysterious path, and help you continue to keep the faith that we can do it together.”

23/07/2020: Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets re-schedule UK Tour
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have been forced to re-schedule their UK dates once again. With the announcement that their European shows would now take place in 2021, the band confirm that the UK shows will also take place next year.
“Due to the uncertainty surrounding us all due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Saucers UK tour, due to take place in October, has been rescheduled to April/May 2021. It’s important to the band that those who are planning to attend the shows are able to do so safely and without concern for their health and wellbeing. To achieve this, and to allow people the opportunity to plan their travel to and from the concerts, postponing until next spring was the best option. It has also enabled the band to add some shows in Croydon, Newcastle, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Nottingham, with tickets now on sale.
All tickets remain valid for the new dates, and some tickets are still available to purchase. Unfortunately, we are unable to reschedule the shows in Gateshead and Southampton and customers can receive a refund from their ticket provider. However, we have announced new shows as close as possible to these areas (in Newcastle and Portsmouth).”

23/07/2020: IZZ to release Half Life EP later this month
On the heels of their celebrated 2019 studio album, Don’t Panic, IZZ are set to release a 20-minute EP entitled Half Life featuring four tracks including three new studio songs as well as a previously unreleased live version of The Wait of It All, a track originally featured on their 2004 EP, Ampersand Volume 1.. The title track from the EP is accompanied by and animated short film by Mallory Kinney.
“The title track of this EP was actually written several years ago, but when we listened to it again recently, it took on new meaning given the uncertainty in the world today and it became obvious to us that we needed to finish mixing it and get it out into the world,” says bassist John Galgano.
“This EP comes at an interesting time for the band and for the world because we have been using our time at home these past few months to take a deep dive into writing our next proper studio album which we plan on releasing in 2021 and this EP kind of snuck its way into our consciousness, so we decided to go with it and follow the muse,” says drummer Brian Coralian.
Half Life will be available on 28th July 2020 via download on Bandcamp. A limited vinyl pressing of Half Life, which contains a 20-minute bonus track on Side B from guitarist Paul Bremner’s solo album (featuring all of the members of IZZ) will also be available for purchase directly from the band and their label via their store: Doone Records Store.

23/07/2020: Ozric Tentacles Announce New Album Space For The Earth for 9th October 2020 Release
Written, recorded and produced throughout 2019/20 by Ed Wynne in Blue Bubble Studios, this diverse musical adventure comprises seven new tracks spanning 45 minutes. Inspired by the Scottish hills, valleys and beaches surrounding his studio, Wynne feels that lockdown in a strange kind of way has provided space for the Earth to breathe for a while and for people to rediscover its resonant healing frequency. Wynne comments: ‘This is space music for people from the Earth to enjoy’.
Ozrics’ synth player Silas Neptune and drummer Balázs Szende join forces again with Wynne on the album which also features special guest appearances from former members synth player Joie Hinton, drummer Nick Van Gelder, flautist Champignon and percussionist Paul Hankin. Psychedelic voyager Gracerooms also contributes additional synth layers. Wynne plays his recently revived Ibanez Jem, a new 8-string guitar, all kinds of synths and bass. Van Gelder uses the original snare he played on the first six cassette albums and early live Ozric performances. One tune features Champignon playing kaval, a traditional wooden Balkan flute.
The album artwork was inspired directly by these seven tracks and realised by arboreal artist Kitty (Twisty-Trees) with help from Ed and cosmic artist Ivy.
To celebrate this year’s summer solstice Ozric Tentacles released a new single, taken from Space For The Earth, entitled “Humboldt Currant”. Wynne states ‘It’s a light-hearted message about feeling all right. It’s not trying to dig down into the depths of what is going wrong in the world but giving people a little bit of relief from everyday life, a stepping-stone into the astral plane’.
Space For The Earth will be released on CD, LP (black and coloured vinyl available) and digitally and is available to pre-order here: https://ozrictentacles.lnk.to/SpaceForTheEarth

17/07/2020: Mark Kelly adds fuel to forthcoming solo album release
Back in April of this year TPA’s Leo Trimming caught up with Mark Kelly to discuss the release of the deluxe edition reissue of Marillion’s Script for a Jester’s Tear. In the interview Mark Kelly revealed that he had been working on his first solo album.
Mark commented: “I’ve been talking about it for many years but I’m actually quite far on with recording a solo album. I’ve pretty much finished writing and demoing with a bunch of musicians. I don’t want to say too much about it just yet but it’s definitely going to get done this year… so finally!”
In a series of posts on his Facebook page Mark Kelly announced “Finally, my first solo album is coming!”. He also reveled his new website – Mark Kelly’s Marathon.
Commenting back in April Mark added: “Very much a vocal album. I’ve got a really good singer, not known to anyone really but he’s a great find. He suits my music brilliantly. It’s a collection of songs – not really a concept album, although lyrically the songs are quite linked. It’s going to be two or three longer tracks of 10 to 15 minutes and two or three shorter tracks. It sounds a bit ‘Marillion-ish’ in places, as you’d expect, and at other times it doesn’t. Very much ‘songs’ and quite melodic.”
17/07/2020: Derek Sherinian launches new single from The Phoenix album
Today sees the release of the Empyrean Sky single, taken from the forthcoming studio album The Phoenix and Derek Sherinian’s first album since 2011’s Oceana. Sherinian is joined on Empyrean Sky by Simon Phillips (drums), Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (guitar), Jimmy Johnson (bass) and Armen Ra (theremin).
Derek Sherinian comments: “I truly feel that this is my best solo record to date. Simon and I put a lot of energy into the writing, and I am grateful to all of the great players that contributed to this recording.”
As mentioned, Sherinian has teamed up with drummer extraordinaire Simon Phillips, who not only plays drums but also co-produced and co-wrote the album: “It is always an amazing experience to be able to work with Simon. He’s been a hero of mine for ages, ever since I heard him playing on albums with Jeff Beck and Michael Schenker. And he is such an invaluable part of the way this new record has come out.”
There are a number of top line guests featured on The Phoenix, as has been the case in the past for Sherinian, on both guitar and bass. Some have become regular contributors to his solo sessions. People such as bassists Tony Franklin, who has been on all previous Sherinian albums, Jimmy Johnson and Billy Sheehan. Plus guitarists Joe Bonamassa and Zakk Wylde. In addition, for the first time. Steve Vai joins the fold.
Derek Sherinian comments: “Steve Vai has always been on my hit list. But it was when I played keyboards on the Generation Axe tour of Asia in 2017 that I asked him to play on my record, which he gladly accepted.”

17/07/2020: John Mitchell talks to TPA about the new Lonely Robot album
In Part One of Dave Cookson’s interview with John Mitchell, he talks about his new Lonely Robot release, Feelings Are Good, songwriting, collaborating, being the robot and putting it all out there.
John comments: I’m intrigued by words and lyrics. I’m fascinated by people like Justin Currie from Del Amitri, and Roger Waters, they have such a compelling way of putting words together, and I’ve always been fascinated by words, as an example, on the It Bites album Map of the Past we had a song called Cartoon Graveyard, which is part of a lyric from a Paul Simon song, but I thought it would make an excellent title for a song, and I didn’t really know what I was writing about until I thought, the song is kind of about how you can become a caricature of what people expect you to be like, for example, if you are the class clown, you play up to that caricature and that’s what the song is about.

The Pineapple Thief will release new studio album Versions Of The Truth on 4th September 2020 via Kscope. Today the band released the second single, Break It All, check out the video…
“One of the darker, more sinister tracks from the album, ‘Break it All’ attempts to make sense of narcissistic destruction and the fallout”, explains frontman Bruce Soord. “I remember this song developed really quickly, with Gavin (Harrison) firing back new ideas that sent me off in all kinds of directions. We seem to have developed our shared musical understanding even further with this album. Sometimes I listen back and wonder where on earth it all came from.”
The track arrives alongside a video directed by George Laycock and produced by Blacktide Phonic/Visual, and sees the band trapped in a maze designed by Adrian Fisher with shots of the band interspersed with surreal patterns emerging from the darkness.
Bruce explains, “George wanted to shoot in the maze at night, which would have been simple had it not been the week after the summer solstice! So we had to wait until about 11pm before it was dark enough to shoot. We were really lucky to be able to use Adrian Fisher’s maze in his garden. Adrian is ‘the world’s leading maze designer’ and a lovely guy to boot. He was more than happy to see me and the crew running around it in the dead of night. The maze ties in perfectly with the album artwork and the overall concept. We also got to shoot the whole band (socially distanced of course!). It was really nice to do something together after so long apart.”
Versions Of The Truth will be released on 4th September 2020 via Kscope.

15/07/2020: Lazuli announce the departure of guitarist Gédéric Byar
In a statement on their Facebook Page Lazuli have announced the departure of guitarist Gédéric Byar. Commenting they revealed that three weeks following the French lockdown, Byar expressed his wish to leave the band.
“These 15 years spent alongside Ged were magnificent and full of love, no shadow on the board, in happiness and in torment and his resolution seemed to us only more confusing. Today, Ged chose another path, far from music and although I regret this 180 degree turn, I will not allow myself to judge his decision. It is to admit that a group is not a prison and that in love as friendship, there can be no key at the door.”
Joining the band on guitar will be Arnaud Beyney.
“Arnaud is a great musician but not that, a beautiful human being too!!! His fiery and smile put balm to our hearts. If Ged is unique, Arnaud is too; two very different musicians, this will prevent comparison…”
Lazuli will return to gigging next year – confirmed dates:
01/03/21 (Mon): CAMBRIDGE, The Portland Arms
02/03/21 (Tue): NEWCASTLE, Think Tank?
03/03/21 (Wed): GLASGOW, Ivory Blacks
04/03/21 (Thu): LIVERPOOL, Cavern Club
07/03/21 (Sun): SOUTHAMPTON, The 1865

14/07/2020: Damian Wilson Revealed as Arena’s New Lead Vocalist
In a statement posted to their web site and Facebook pages, Arena have revealed Damian Wilson as their new lead vocalist following the departure of Paul Manzi.
“We have great pleasure in welcoming Damian Wilson to the new Arena line up. Most people will already know him as a fantastic singer, and there is no doubt he will bring something special and original to the band.
We have known Damian for about 25 years, and the idea of him singing for Arena has, in fact, been a possibility in the past, but circumstances did not allow that to happen at the time. However, since Paul has now decided to move on, it would seem that we have come full circle, and the time is now right!
A few days ago we took the chance to take some new photos. Although we were ‘socially distanced’, a little photoshop can do wonders. 😉
Recording will start soon for the new album ‘The Theory of Molecular Inheritance‘ with Damian on vocals, but the release has been delayed due to the restrictions of the Corona Virus.
You can be sure that we will release our new album just as soon as we can.”

14/07/2020: The Tangent Launch ‘Life On Hold’; First Single From New Album Auto Reconnaissance
The Tangent recently announced the release of their 11th studio album Auto Reconnaissance on the 21st August 2020. The follow-up to 2018’s Proxy’, today they launch the first track titled ‘Life On Hold’;
Andy Tillison comments: “‘Life On Hold is the cheerful up-tempo Prog Rock foot-stomper we chose to kick off our album. It sits alongside pieces we’ve done in the past like ‘GPS Culture’ and ‘Spark In The Aether’, ‘Crisis In Midlife’ etc and it’s a flavour we do like to return to now and then. This one is influenced by things like that first Asia album, stuff like Kansas and Boston, and the kind of thing that Transatlantic might bang out at you. It’s part of our genetic makeup, but of course only one part. Although there’s a fair amount of accessible tunes on the new album, there’s some seriously deep water around too. And no, ‘Life On Hold’ has nothing to do with Lockdowns. It mentions Jean Paul Sartre, which is not normal in foot-stompers. Get it ON!! Bang, and the dirt is gone!”
Auto Reconnaissance will be available as a limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP + CD + LP-Booklet and as a digital album. Pre-order now here: https://The-Tangent.lnk.to/AutoReconnaissance
Andy comments: “I utterly refuse to accept that Progressive Rock Music is some kind of museum piece. It is actually a living and breathing movement that has a past, a present and above all, a future. It once had an album-chart-topping golden age, but the genre was never about that. It has subtly and virally kept itself alive for decades where many new musical genres have risen to glory and faded away.”
For this release, Andy is once again joined by long-time collaborators Jonas Reingold, Luke Machin (who co-produced the album with Andy), Theo Travis, and Steve Roberts. Andy comments: “In the past 6 years the line-up of The Tangent has become more stable than at the beginning. I think that the identity of the Tangent as a “Group” rather than a “Project” started to come together on the album ‘A Spark In The Aether’ in 2014. Essentially Luke, Jonas, Theo and myself have appeared on the last four albums, and we added Steve Roberts for the tour that supported ‘Slow Rust’ in 2017 and we’ve settled on this line-up. I hope for a while because I find this unit to be productive, in tune with the band’s purpose and manifesto and a lot of fun to boot. The new album ‘Auto Reconnaissance’ is the first time that the core band has been identical in structure to its predecessor. For the first time I feel that everyone is totally onboard with the fusion of Jazz, Prog, Punkishness and electronica that The Tangent likes to cook up. We are a good group of friends and although we don’t meet up often, it’s a real blast when we do. I’ve always considered Ed Unitsky the cover artist to have been a recurring member of the cast – his artwork has been a huge part of our story and although we move away, we always return.”
Auto Reconnaissance features the artwork of Ed Untisky, whose visuals have not been seen on a Tangent album since 2014’s A Spark In The Aether.

12/07/2020: Dyble Longdon Tribute To The Passing of Judy Dyble
English singer-songwriter Judy Dyble sadly passed away on 12th July 2020 following a long illness borne with great courage. Judy Dyble was one of the pioneers of the English folk rock scene in the 1960s, most notably as a founding member of Fairport Convention and vocalist with cult band Trader Horne.
Judy largely withdrew from the music scene in the early 1970s to concentrate on her family before being invited back to the Fairport fold in 1997 for the 30th anniversary reunion at Cropredy. To Judy’s great relief, her worries, ahead of the event, disappeared as ‘suddenly the years fell away.’ Further Fairport anniversary appearances reassured Judy and showed that her passion for music had remained through the years and she made three albums with Marc Swordfish, of Astralasia, as she began a revival of her music career.
This included numerous guest appearances on albums by a host of artists including, in 2017, Big Big Train. Judy went on to form a close working relationship with Big Big Trains multi-instrumentalist frontman David Longdon. Together they will release their album Between A Breath And A Breath on 25th September 2020, with Longdon providing the music for Judy’s poignant lyrics.
Two songs from the Dyble Longdon sessions which are not included on the album, Crossbones and The Daguerreotype, will be released by English Electric in the autumn subsequent to the release of Between A Breath And A Breath as a tribute to Judy Dyble via Bandcamp.
The lyrics for Judy’s final collection of songs are, at times, haunting and beautifully fragile, dark in tone but neither morbid nor desperate. Specifically, The Daguerreotype looks at how the Victorians dealt with death, turning it into an art form.
In accordance with Judy’s request, Crossbones and The Daguerreotype will be made available as free downloads, with listeners being encouraged to make a donation to Judy’s chosen charity, the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary (www.barleykennels.co.uk/) if they wish.
David Longdon says: “It is with great sadness that I write to say that my dear friend Judy Dyble passed away this morning. Judy and I became friends during the writing and making of this album. Along the way, there was much laughter and joy – but also challenging moments. She was a woman of a certain age and she wrote articulately and unflinchingly about the autumn phase of her life.”
“She dealt with her illness with incredible courage and fortitude. She suspected this album was her swan song and she gave it her all. Judy reassured me that she’d had a great life. Which indeed she did. And I will miss her greatly.”
We wish to express our deepest sympathies to Judy’s family, friends and many associates from her musical career at this time.
Judy’s family would like to thank her fans for their messages and good wishes on social media over the last few weeks, but at this time ask that they avoid contacting them for now as they would just like some quiet time.

09/07/2020: Lee Abraham to Release New Solo Album Harmony/Synchronicity
Galahad guitarist and solo artist Lee Abraham will release his latest solo album, entitled Harmony/Synchronicity, on Friday 4th September 2020 through F2 Music / Festival Music.
The album was written and recorded during an intense 8 week period during the UK pandemic lock-down between April and early June 2020, and comes less than 12 months after Lee’s critically acclaimed album Comatose. Lee is joined as ever by musical partner Gerald Mulligan (Credo) on drums and a host of familiar vocalists.
Lee explains: “While calling on some of my trusted usual names to help me realise the album, Marc Atkinson (Riversea, Moon Halo) and Simon Godfrey (Shineback, Valdez, Tinyfish), I also reached out to Peter Jones (Tiger Moth Tales, Camel) whose voice is totally suited to one of the songs in particular (the late 80s/early 90s Genesis influenced ‘Stay’)”.
“Following his excellent work on the gospel choir from my last album Comatose I had to ask Mark Spencer, my Galahad mate, to take part and sing some lead vocals. Mark has a real confident delivery that many people will know from his association with the legendary Twelfth Night. Finally, asking Stu Nicholson, the voice of Galahad, was long overdue! Stu and I have a working relationship that goes back nearly 15 years, so when I asked him he replied “I thought you’d never ask!”
All the vocalists worked remotely on the album during the UK lock-down and sent their parts for inclusion. As you might expect the lyrics touch on themes associated with the world-wide pandemic, the media reaction and public opinion of political and society behaviour (The World Is Falling Down, Rise Again, Hearing The Call), remembering more comfortable times (Stay), while the title track explores the strange phenomenon of unrelated events occurring simultaneously.
Lee handles all guitars, keys, pianos and bass guitars and all production duties. Artwork design has been undertaken by Robin Armstrong (Cosmograf).

09/07/2020: Judy Dyble and David Longdon Announce the Forthcoming Release of Between A Breath And A Breath
Dyble Longdon is a collaboration between vocalist Judy Dyble (ex Fairport Convention, Trader Horne) and Big Big Train songwriter and vocalist David Longdon. Together they will release their collaborative album Between A Breath And A Breath on 25th September. The CD edition is released on English Electric, distributed by RSK, and the gatefold vinyl edition is released on the Plane Groovy label.
The album contains seven original compositions with all lyrics by Judy Dyble and music and production by David Longdon. The collaboration with David Longdon is something Judy Dyble has hoped for for some time. “I first heard David sing with Big Big Train at King’s Place in London 2015 and immediately decided that I really wanted to sing with him someday. And here we are with a collaborative album, which I think is wonderful!”
David Longdon adds: “Judy asked if I would like to work with her. She sent me some great lyrics which inspired the music and over the years we’ve become good friends. Judy duetted with me on The Ivy Gate, which appears on Big Big Train’s Grimspound album. The Dyble Longdon album is a natural development on from this piece.”
Judy, who is fighting cancer, expands on the subject matter of the songs: “The lyrics for these songs virtually wrote themselves, with minor tweaks, as music grew around them. All were written before I was diagnosed and before the dreadful virus stamped its footprint on our world. Quite a few of my lyrics have a touch of sadness about them but always with an optimism for the future and a desire to know what happens next. France, Whisper and Obedience tell stories suggested in conversations and Between A Breath And A Breath is sheer magic. Astrologers was a simple ‘Hmmpph! Stop it!, while Heartwashing and Tidying Away were just poems which wrote themselves.”
Between A Breath And A Breath was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and Playpen Studios in Bristol. The album was produced by David Longdon and mixed by Patrick Phillips (Elbow, Kate Bush and Sir Paul McCartney). The artwork for the album is by Sarah Ewing.
