30/06/2020: Godsticks Premiere New Video Relief to Raise Support for Struggling Venues and Festivals
Godsticks present a new video Relief, filmed during lockdown and inspired by a yearning to get back on the road playing to real life audiences.
Singer and guitarist Darran Charles discussed the rationale behind the video. “Like all musicians at the moment, we’re desperate for normality to resume so that we can play live once again. So, to compensate we’ve recorded a virtual live performance from the comfort of our home studios. It’s of course no substitute to being physically on stage, but thanks to some technological wizardry, we can invite you to watch us perform ‘Relief’ from our new record, and perhaps also set a record for playing the most venues in 5 minutes and 2 seconds! Some of these are well loved local and national venues that we’ve enjoyed playing at over the years, while others are representative of our ambitions and dreams! With concerts likely to be a significant time away from resuming, the survival of live venues and festivals around the world is under threat. Fortunately, there are organisations set up to try and prevent this from happening; organisations such as https://saveourvenues.co.uk/#/
Charles continued: “We have put a list of some of our favourite venues and festivals on our website, some of whom need your support more than ever, and some who have had to set up crowdfunding campaigns. Of course, there are countless industries struggling at the moment, but this is ours, and in order for live music to resume in the future then we’ll need our favourite venues to remain in existence!”
The band have also thrown out a challenge for fans watching the new video: “Do you recognise any of the venues? Well, if you can there’s a prize in it for ya! Whoever names the most venues and shares the post around with the hashtag #saveourvenues has a chance to win a bundle of records from our label Kscope. They will pick a winner at random from all the social media shares over the next week.”
GHodsticks have a new album – Inescapable – produced by James Loughrey (Skindred) and recorded at the Monnow Valley studio.

27/06/2020: The Tangent release Life On Hold taken from their forthcoming studio album
The Tangent recently announced the release of their 11th studio album Auto Reconnaissance, scheduled for the 21st August 2020, through InsideOut Music. To mark this the band have now premiered the first track taken from the album, Life On Hold…
Andy comments: “‘Life On Hold is the cheerful up-tempo Prog Rock foot-stomper we chose to kick off our album. It sits alongside pieces we’ve done in the past like ‘GPS Culture’ and ‘Spark In The Aether’, ‘Crisis In Midlife’ etc and it’s a flavour we do like to return to now and then. This one is influenced by things like that first Asia album, stuff like Kansas and Boston, and the kind of thing that Transatlantic might bang out at you. It’s part of our genetic makeup, but of course only one part. Although there’s a fair amount of accessible tunes on the new album, there’s some seriously deep water around too. And no, ‘Life On Hold’ has nothing to do with Lockdowns. It mentions Jean Paul Sartre, which is not normal in foot-stompers. Get it ON!! Bang, and the dirt is gone!”
For this release, Andy is once again joined by long-time collaborators Jonas Reingold, Luke Machin (who co-produced the album with Andy), Theo Travis, and Steve Roberts.
Andy comments of the current line-up: “In the past 6 years the line-up of The Tangent has become more stable than at the beginning. I think that the identity of the Tangent as a “Group” rather than a “Project” started to come together on the album ‘A Spark In The Aether’ in 2014. Essentially Luke, Jonas, Theo and myself have appeared on the last four albums, and we added Steve Roberts for the tour that supported ‘Slow Rust’ in 2017 and we’ve settled on this line-up. I hope for a while because I find this unit to be productive, in tune with the band’s purpose and manifesto and a lot of fun to boot. The new album ‘Auto Reconnaissance’ is the first time that the core band has been identical in structure to its predecessor. For the first time I feel that everyone is totally onboard with the fusion of Jazz, Prog, Punkishness and electronica that The Tangent likes to cook up. We are a good group of friends and although we don’t meet up often, it’s a real blast when we do. I’ve always considered Ed Unitsky the cover artist to have been a recurring member of the cast – his artwork has been a huge part of our story and although we move away, we always return.”
Auto Reconnaissance will be available in several formats and is available to pre-order HERE.
25/06/2020: Ayreon releases trailer for Transitus album
Ayreon have announced they will release their new studio album, Transitus through Music Theories Recordings (Mascot Label Group) on 25th September 2020. Today sees the release of a seven minute trailer…
“Transitus is built around an entirely new story, not connected to the Ayreon universe although as always it does have some subtle links. The sci-fi theme makes way for a gothic ghost story set (partly) in the 19th century with elements of horror and the supernatural. It’s on a dark thunderous night where our story of Abby and Daniel begins.”
Once again Arjen Anthony Lucassen has assembled a mega cast of musicians and vocalists including Amanda Somerville, Simone Simons, Joe Satriani, Paul Manzi, Tommy Karevik and more…
Transitus is narrated by one former Doctor Who, Tom Baker. “I was looking for a real storyteller with a mature, deep, warm voice. As a kid, I was a huge Doctor Who fan and my favourite doctor was Tom Baker. I couldn’t believe my luck when he agreed to do it! We went to the UK to record him, and it was one of those unforgettable experiences.”
25/06/2020: Pain of Salvation Announce Details for New Studio Album Panther

Panther is the follow-up release to 2017’s In The Passing Light Of Day and was recorded, mixed and produced by Daniel Gildenlöw with Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, Devin Townsend). 3. RESTLESS BOY
5. KEEN TO A FAULT
Pain of Salvation’s Daniel Gildenlöw comments: “The making of ‘PANTHER’ has taken over 2 years. I have felt the need to push boundaries, both musically and sonically. Approaching the music from more diverse angles, yet without losing the core identity of the band. Lyrically it coincidently fits more than ever into current times. When I look at the great artwork drawings that went into the concept, I can only say that I am extremely happy how everything turned out. I can’t wait to share this album with everybody.”

24/06/2020: Peter Jones (Tiger Moth Tales) releases Still Alive video
The track Still Alive is taken from the band’s new eponymous album, which is scheduled for release, through White Knight Records, on 1st August 2020.
“The video accompanying the song is a great example of people coping with the adversity of the current situation, so thanks very much to everyone who submitted their great clips. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it?”

“This is not the album I had previously planned to put out, as I’d already recorded a collection of new songs at Fieldgate Studios in South Wales which, for various reasons beyond our control, is not ready for release yet,” explains mainman Peter Jones. “But like so many other things this year, this new mini album came out of the blue as a response to the times we now find ourselves in. There are different moods in the songs, inspired by my own alternating feelings. From visions of a doomed world and a growing tone of madness, to a desire to see the positives and the spirit of endurance and survival. Hopefully the message is ultimately an uplifting one and will resonate with others.”

23/06/2020: Godsticks perform lockdown video for Relief
Thanks to some “technological wizardry” Godsticks have recorded a virtual live performance of Relief, taken from their new album, Inescapable, released in February this year…
The band are hoping to “raise awareness for the ‘Save Our Venues’ campaign run by the Music Venue Trust and perhaps also set a record for playing the most venues in 5 minutes and 2 seconds!”
“The survival of live venues and festivals around the world is under threat, and in order for live music to resume in the future, we need to support our favourite venues and help them remain in existence! So we chose some well-loved local, national and international venues and festivals, some we have played at and some we could only dream of playing, to create an epic backdrop montage for our virtual live performance.”

20/06/2020: Summer’s End Festival 2020 rescheduled to 2021
The Summer’s End team have reluctantly postponed this year’s Summer’s End Festival until next year. In a statement on their Facebook Page Stephen and Huw announce:
“It is with a feeling of resigned disappointment that we have to announce that Summer’s End 2020 has been rescheduled to 2021. The festival will now take place from September 30th to October 3rd 2021 at the Drill Hall, Chepstow. We are delighted to say that, as with Winter’s End, the entire line up is confirmed for these new dates and we are very grateful to them for their cooperation.
While social distancing remains in place, we feel that to go ahead with the festival – even in the unlikely event that we were legally allowed to do so – would be irresponsible, so we have decided to reschedule at this reasonably early stage to allow both the bands and our hugely loyal attendees to make the necessary arrangements.
All tickets purchased for 2020 will, of course, be valid for the new dates. We will also be taking this opportunity to redesign the Summer’s End website to make it mobile and tablet friendly and intend to relaunch it in the next couple of weeks with some exciting news!

19/06/2020: The Pineapple Thief release first single from forthcoming album
Ahead of the release of their new studio album, Versions Of The Truth, The Pineapple Thief release Demons, the first single from the album…
“The lyrics really speak for themselves,” explains frontman Bruce Soord. “It’s a very simple sentiment, but actually one that was quite difficult to sing when it came to it. It was one of the first songs we wrote for the new album and the emotions that fed into the track were still very raw at the time. I’d like to think writing songs like this would prove to be cathartic, but in reality those demons just don’t go away and it’s really a case of learning to live with them.”

19/06/2020: Randy McStine and Marco Minnemann Release Second Single Your Offenses From Forthcoming Album
Randy McStine & Marco Minnemann are collaborating to form a new band. Pre-orders for their debut album began on 1st May 2020, along with the release of their first single Program and its accompanying music video. The pair have now released the second single from their album called Your Offenses, along with a new performance video of the song from their respective home studios.
The duo initially met in 2018 while working with other artists, but as they discovered their shared passion for an assortment of Rock, Pop, and Punk artists, they decided to embark on a collaborative project together. Although McStine and Minnemann initially set out to record an EP, they quickly shifted to making an album as their musical ideas and chemistry flourished. The result of their self-titled debut, McStine & Minnemann, is a high-energy collection of ten songs that sit well next to the likes of XTC, Mr. Bungle, The Police, Queen, and Frank Zappa. As both men are prolific multi-instrumentalists and writers, they have created a space for each other to showcase their instrumental talents, while infusing them with a mix of melodic and lyrical depth.
Your Offenses draws inspiration from their biggest musical influences of the 1970’s but gives it a modern and more sophisticated twist. Randy says “We didn’t make a ‘punk rock’ record, but I feel like the core of it is very much in that spirit. [In this song] the bass and drums have a Police-like presence and I really love the way the song turned out!” Marco adds: “I enjoy this mix thoroughly; the energy, the sophisticated parts, the experimental bits, and not shying away from anything.” Randy also comments on the great connection he had with Marco while writing this song: “When I listened to what Marco did with the guitars in the bridge section, it was exactly what in my head, I was eventually intending to do. That was a moment for me where I knew that we were totally on the same page!”
McStine & Minnemann was produced by the duo, and mixed by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, SikTh).

17/06/2020: Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly Announce New Album Alone Together
Swedish multi-instrumentalist Rikard Sjöblom has announced the forthcoming release of his new album under the Gungfly moniker, Alone Together. The album is set for release on the 4th September 2020.
Rikard comments: “I started writing these songs about a year ago but then it took some time to get started with the production because I had two tours lined up, one with Big Big Train in November and then opening solo for The Flower Kings on their European tour in December. After that my focus shifted back to Gungfly and it felt really nice so it all came together pretty fast!”
Alone Together sees Gungfly recording as a trio, with brothers and previous collaborators Petter and Rasmus Diamant on drums and bass respectively. “It was a lot of fun playing both keyboards and guitar because I had come up with a lot of nice parts but I knew early on that I wanted to make the album with the brothers on drums and bass – luckily they were very up for it!” This ‘power-trio’ have focused on the rock this time: “I didn’t want to smother the production with layers upon layers of keyboards and bells and whistles but instead tried to keep it prog rock with the focus on ROCK. I wanted every instrument to mean something in the mix.”
Alone Together will be available as a Limited CD Digipak (with 2 bonus tracks), Gatefold 2LP + CD & as Digital Album. The album cover features a painting by American artist Kevin Sloan (The Flower Kings). Rikard comments of the piece: “I had just written lyrics for the song ‘From Afar’ and was looking at Kevin’s paintings when I came across this one and I couldn’t believe the connection, particularly the lyric “A million eyes watching glimpses of each other’s lives””.

Announcement from Frosty
After 9 years of close involvement and collaboration with the band Lifesigns, I feel that I can no longer give the band the level of dedication and commitment that it deserves for it to be able to move forward successfully.
I have therefore decided to leave and allow someone else the opportunity to shine in this band of great musicians.
I wish all of the band every success for the future and would like to thank all the fans for liking all the music produced so far and thank them for their continued support in the years to come. Thank you to everyone.
Best Frosty. X
Response from John Young
From my own point of view yes it is a very sad day saying goodbye to Frosty. He was indeed the engine room of the band and is a truly wonderful talent and a lovely man. I thank him for his hard work, patience, understanding and humour through all our travels in both the JYB and Lifesigns and I wish him the very best for his endeavours in the years to come. He will be much missed…Thank You Frosty xx
12/06/2020: Long Distance Calling Release Video for Third New Single Immunity
Germany’s Long Distance Calling are set to release their seventh studio album How Do We Want To Live? on the 26th June 2020. Today the band launch the 3rd and final track to be released prior to the album’s release, Immunity.
The band comments: “Please check out the 3rd single of our upcoming new record “How Do We Want To Live?”. The song is called “Immunity” and we hope you’ll enjoy this tune as much as we do! The video is very special for us. Some of the footage was shot by our community during the Covid19 pandemic. Many thanks to all the talented filmmakers out there. On one hand the video deals with the fact, that the digital world we are living in has so much to offer as we are able to communicate with people from all over the world and share important information. On the other hand all the technology and digital platforms are being misused to spread lies, hate, weird conspiracies. Of course we are an instrumental band. But that cannot stop us from shouting against racism, xenophobia, homophobia and all that bullshit that is going on during these strange times right now. So let us use this technical progress and this crisis to make this world a better place! Big thanx and shout out to producer David Gregory and his team, who did a great job to make this video possible!”
The band also recently announced a special album launch drive-in show on the 2nd July in Oberhausen, Germany. Tickets are on sale now and the band comments: “Friends, you might have heard that we are going to release our new album “HOW DO WE WANT TO LIVE” on June 26th and of course we want to celebrate this with you! We got an invitation from the Autoarena in Oberhausen And of course we said yes for July 2nd. Due to the current situation no „regular“ shows are possible so this is a nice and interesting thing to try out and it fits really well to the „Seats & Sounds“ Concept, just sit in your car, grab some snacks and some cool beverages. The „Seats & Sounds 2020“ tour in in Support of the new album is not affected by this show, we still hope that can celebrate this special shows with you! Love LDC”
How Do We Want To Live? will be available as a Limited Edition CD, Gatefold Black 2LP + CD & as Digital Album. A limited deluxe box-set will also be released, containing a special coloured edition of the album, an exclusive 7 inch featuring two remixes, a beautiful poster featuring the artwork of Max Löffler, and 4 individually signed art-cards all contained in a lift-off box.

06/06/2020: Enslaved Announce Cinematic Summer Tour 2020
Enslaved have announced a Cinematic Summer Tour for 2020. The announcement, made on the band’s Facebook page, outlines their plans for a series of “high-end” online events.
The full announcement reads:
“‘We must stick apart’ is a proverb of Discordianism (a religion I [Ivar] might or might not have just made up) that might fit the situation we are all in now. We are all isolated in various degrees; and we all miss live music. So, we have stuck apart and with our fantastic team of super-people in management, label and booking, plus three of our best friends who happen to be the very creme de la creme of European Festivals; we are now able to present this digital festival-tour. We are already hard at work preparing sets and shows that will make this one for the (e-)books.
We are stoked to announce our upcoming “Cinematic Summer Tour 2020” today! After the great experience of our first streaming event on April 1st from Verftet Online Music Festival, we decided to take it one step further to enlighten our concertless summer with a series of high-end online events – a cinematic tour experience!
For this forward-thinking concept, we are joining forces with three festivals that present one of the three different shows each:
In cooperation with Roadburn Festival, the tour starts July 30th, with the “Chronicles Of The Northbound” show. Fans will be invited by the festival to choose their favourite Enslaved songs to create a career spanning set. The second show will be a “Below The Lights” set on August 20th, presented by Beyond the Gates festival. We will end our virtual tour at the Summer Breeze open air on September 30th, with “Utgard – The Journey Within“.
Each individual event will be accompanied by different side happenings, on which we will shed more light separately.
All events will be streamed on our YouTube channel!
To give everyone the chance to be part of this, all three shows will be accessible free of charge. There will be a donation option and special merch for the Cinematic Summer Tour.
Thank you for your support, faith in us and patience – to have fans like you is an absolute privilege.
See you in the Ether!

Masters OF Illusion will be released on 1st July and contains six songs based around the lives of “horror film” actors. The first music from the album is the opening track Bela and offers a glimpse into the actor Bela Lugosi, perhaps best noted for his portrayal of Dracula.
Rob Reed says of the video: “Bela is the opening track of the album is of course about Bela Lugosi, the famous horror movie actor of the early Universal horror films. He was the first to play Dracula onscreen, and became typecast in that role. His career never reached those heights again, and he struggled with addiction. He even ended up being buried in his Dracula cloak. Musically, it’s a full-on Prog journey at over ten minutes long.”

05/06/2020: Nick D’Virgilio releases new single from forthcoming Invisible album
Invisible is the second solo album by Nick D’Virgilio and comes almost two decades after his debut solo offering, Karma. The release of Invisible begins yet another fascinating chapter in NDV’s multi-faceted career, which he concludes “has taken many twists and turns. I have been able to live out some major musical fantasies, seeing some of the highest highs as well as some of the lowest lows. It has been a wild ride that is not over yet!”. The second single from the album is a distinctive cover version of the the Tamla Motown song, Money (That’s What I Want)
In regard to how the song fits into the narrative flow of ‘Invisible’, he explains: “Lyrically, the words fit perfectly. The song comes at the point in the story where the protagonist has decided to leave his dead end job and venture out into the world to try and discover the meaning of his life. He wanders into a shop and sees the person behind the counter looking dishevelled and depressed, prompting him to ask ‘is everything OK? Why are you here? If it’s that bad, why don’t you go home?’ Those questions prompt the response that they need money. They are stuck in life’s trap just like him, and he swiftly realises that he is not alone in feeling alone.”
The album features a host of guest musicians including Jordan Rudess, Paul Gilbert, Tony Levin, Carl Verheyen, Joneas Reingold, Jem Godfrey, Nick Nielsen and more…
Invisible will be released on 26th June 2020 on English Electric

05/06/2020: Kansas premiere Jets Overhead video
Kansas release another new song, Jets Overhead, taken from their highly anticipated new studio album The Absence of Presence out 26th June 2020, through InsideOut Music.
Jets Overhead follows two previous releases Memories Down The Line and Throwing Mountains, all from the upcoming album.
“Jets Overhead” has become one of my favorite songs on the album”, says Kansas guitarist Zak Rizvi, who wrote the music for the song. “Tom Brislin wrote some fantastic lyrics, David Ragsdale‘s violin solo is absolutely smoking, and Ronnie Platt nailed the vocals.”
05/06/2020: Jo Quail Releases ‘The Parodos Cairn’ to Raise Money for the ‘Save Our Venues’ Crowd Funder
Composer and cellist Jo Quail has released The Parodos Cairn to raise money for the ‘Save Our Venues’ crowd funder. The new composition is comprised entirely of 167 audio samples sent to her over the first few weeks of lockdown during the Covid-19 crisis.
Jo comments, ‘I was of course disappointed following the necessary and inevitable cancellation and postponement of all concerts and tours, but primarily I felt an overwhelming urge to somehow connect with you in this time, to still symbolically meet with you and though without a concert hall and stage I felt sure we could still somehow unite, and create an inclusive, unifying experience.
I posted a video on social media outlining these thoughts and suggesting people record a note or a sound, then send these to me, and from these I would create a piece of music. I suggested using phones to record, as I wanted to make this creative outlet available to everybody, musician or not, with or without a recording facility. At the outset of this project I envisaged receiving perhaps 10 or 20 contributions, writing a piece of music for solo cello and then incorporating within this piece whatever samples I received. The incredible take up and enthusiasm from my initial video request meant I had to rethink my strategy! I never foresaw this reaction – I received all kinds of contributions, far beyond my expectations. We in fact have 124 musical contributors sending 167 samples, from 24 countries across the world – everything from operatic soprano to shamans, pianos, printers, table thumps, singing bowls, amazing overdrives, percussion, hiphop beats, cows, guitars, flutes, rattling keys, recorders, dulcimers, strings, and the list goes on!”
Watch the video now for ‘The Parodos Cairn’, directed and produced by Dorian Robinson, incorporating photographic and video contributions generously donated to the cause:
The track, which was mixed and mastered by James Griffiths, is available to download from Bandcamp, who themselves are waiving their revenue fees again for 24 hours. https://joquail.bandcamp.com/
Jo adds, ‘If you would like to make a financial donation when you download your money will go to ‘Save Our Venues’ – an organisation set up in the present time to assist the small and grass roots venues, many of which are fighting to survive. I grew up in these venues musically speaking, I owe them my career. They must thrive, they are a critical part of both our beautiful and varied cultural heritage and the development of our artists, often at the forefront in showcasing new music eagerly sought out by our audiences. If we can help in any way then there is no finer purpose for this creation.
To all of you who took the time to contribute, thank you all with my whole heart. In a challenging time you have collaborated with me to create something that otherwise would not have existed. You hear music everywhere in your lives. You make our world turn. Stay safe and see you at a real life concert as soon as possible!”

04/06/2020: That Joe Payne announces slightly delayed debut solo album release
The official release, including vinyl and digital, will now take place a couple of months later on Friday 7th August 2020. Pre-ordering available HERE.
“I needed people to hear what I went through,” says Payne. “I had a lot of different album concepts, but this had to be the first one to help me let go of the stuff that was holding me back for so long. All that dark stuff, it’s all laid to rest now. I’ve gone from caring too much about what other people think of me to not giving a shit anymore, and it’s a great freedom.”

“Because The Enid’s music was symphonic rock, having an orchestral nature with mad modulation and complexity behind it all, I felt like I had to really live up to that. Making sense of my ideas didn’t start until a couple of years ago. It was quite a nerve-wracking thing for me, I had to spend a long time learning to trust my instincts and believe in myself.”
The album features guest appearances from Ms. Amy Birks on Love Not The Same, Editors drummer Nicholas Willes and former Enid partner Max Read.
“Originally I didn’t want to alienate Enid fans, but I was also determined to bring in more of a pop element as well,” Payne explains. “By the end of the recording process I’m doing By Name. By Nature and Nice Boy, and at that point I’m just producing the record I want to make. They have that symphonic rock element, but I was always interested in that classical crossover stuff – that’s why The Enid appealed to me in the first place. So that was always going to be a part of my sound. But by the end I was prepared to take any risk under the sun and see what I could get away with.”
04/06/2020: Glacier release first teaser from new studio album
UK melodic proggers Glacier will return in 2020 with the follow up to 2015’s Ashes For The Monarch. The Island in the Sky features 10 new tracks from the band and the first taster comes in the form of Icing On The Wake…
The Icing on the Wake (when money means more than lives)
On becoming Prime Minister in 1979, The Iron Lady set about the country with her politics of greed and the mantra that greed is good. The end product of this, with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, set up a clash between right wing ideals and left wing protest. The miners and mining communities paid the price for the strikes against the tyranny.
The irony of the mining communities were that although based on the wealth created through mining, the miners lives were hard and accidents and disease shortened life. ‘We’re god fearing miners who are dying to meet you Lord.”
Will history repeat itself?: “we are past the peak of this disease and on the downward slope.” we need to “fire up the engines of this vast U.K. economy”…

03/06/2020: The Tangent Announce New Album Auto Reconnaissance
The Tangent have announced the release of their 11th studio album Auto Reconnaissance on the 21st August 2020. The follow-up to 2018’s Proxy, sees them taking the band philosophy of celebrating the golden age of prog, whilst bringing it to the present and exploring new paths for the music to take in the future.
Andy Tillison comments: “I utterly refuse to accept that Progressive Rock Music is some kind of museum piece. It is actually a living and breathing movement that has a past, a present and above all, a future. It once had an album-chart-topping golden age, but the genre was never about that. It has subtly and virally kept itself alive for decades where many new musical genres have risen to glory and faded away.”
For this release, Andy is once again joined by long-time collaborator Luke Machin (who also helped produce the album), Jonas Reingold, Theo Travis, and Steve Roberts. For the first time I feel that everyone is “in tune” with the fusion of Jazz, Prog, Punkishness and electronica that The Tangent likes to cook up. We are a good group of friends and although we don’t meet up often, it’s a real blast when we do. I’ve always considered Ed Unitsky the cover artist to have been a recurring member of the cast – his artwork has been a huge part of our story and although we move away, we always return.”
‘Auto Reconnaissance’ will be available as Limited CD Digipak (incl. bonus track), Gatefold 2LP + CD + LP booklet & as Digital Album, all featuring the artwork of Ed Untisky, whose visuals have not been seen on a Tangent album ince 2014’s ‘A Spark In The Aether’.

01/06/2020: Dukes of the Orient to release New Album Freakshow
Formed in 2017 by English vocalist/guitarist John Payne and American keyboard player Erik Norlander, the Prog AOR band Dukes Of The Orient will release their second studio album, Freakshow, in August 2020.
“Working on this album has been a very cathartic experience,” states Payne. “The addition of Alex Garcia [guitar] and Frank Klepacki [drums] was a positive move for a more signature, cohesive sound. As with the previous album, we continue our rich analog keyboard approach layered with guitars by myself and Alex. Mixed and recorded on a traditional board with vintage outboard, we wanted to create an echo to the past and write songs with strong melodic content.”
Norlander comments: “‘Freakshow’ is much more focused both in concept and in sound as it was written and recorded in a single year with a tight group of musicians. Our debut album came out fantastically, but it was recorded over the course of a decade with many different contributing musicians, and in many ways it sounds like that. ‘Freakshow’ has the cohesiveness of vision where the same five musicians performed all the material that was written expressly for this album. I also think our writing on this album is more focused for the same reasons. After working together for so many years, I can write a vocal melody for John, he can write a keyboard part for me, and the parts just work right out of the gate.”
The origins of Dukes Of The Orient lay in 2007 with ASIA featuring John Payne, a band that continued after ASIA keyboardist Geoff Downes had left in order to re-form the original 1982 lineup. Payne recruited Norlander for tour dates in North America, thereby sowing the initial seeds for their partnership. Eventually, ASIA featuring John Payne would record Seasons Will Change, which was released as a video in 2013 and eventually found its way onto the debut album by Dukes Of The Orient.
Following the death of original ASIA vocalist John Wetton in 2017, Payne and Norlander decided that other recordings they had been working on should instead give birth to a new band, out of respect for Wetton and also for clarity with the Downes-led ASIA. However, Dukes Of The Orient are the legitimate successors of John Payne’s Asia.

Vocalist Danny comments on the tour: “You know what helps build something more than waiting? Waiting some more! So just as we were super excited to tour “Colours in the Sun” around Australia in May 2020, we are going to be at least twice as excited to bring it to you in 2021. We are going to be raring to burn off those isolation pounds on stage and bring you a smorgasbord of pent up Voyagerisms; more than ever, live music will have a whole new meaning and I can’t wait to see everyone’s smiles, some new 80s hairdos and some inflatable keytars – Runaway until 2021 Australia, see you soon(ish).”
