29/04/2020: Steve Howe Announces New Solo Album for July Release
Steve Howe has announced he is to release his new solo album Love Is on 31st July through BMG Records. The release is Howe’s first solo album since the all-instrumental Time in 2011 and has a balance of five instrumental tracks and five songs.
The album will be available as CD – gatefold digi-sleeve with 12 page booklet and LP – Black vinyl 180gm with gatefold sleeve, liner notes and lyrics. Steve sings lead vocals and plays electric, acoustic and steel guitars, keyboards, percussion and bass guitar on the instrumentals while Yes vocalist Jon Davison provides vocal harmonies and plays bass guitar on the vocal tracks. The album also features Dylan Howe on drums.
Howe comments: “I called the album Love Is because it hints at the central idea that that love is important but also love of the universe and the ecology of the world is very important. Alexander Humboldt went around the world and recognised we are destroying the planet but that was 200 years ago! We are still destroying the planet and, I suppose, my songs show the yearning I have for the love of nature and how beauty, art and music all stem from nature. There is a theme about those things, love, beauty, ecology, nature and wonderful people.”
Howe invited Jon Davison to join him “to sing harmonies with me and add bass on the songs. If he was singing on the songs I thought why doesn’t he play bass as well and it turned out nice. He’s been with Yes for seven or eight years and he’s a great guy, great performer and a great interpreter of Yes songs. I’ve been singing for years, mainly in harmony but I’ve sung lead on lots of my own albums before and I feel that, as I’ve got older, I’ve got a grip on that and, hopefully, it’s improved over the years.”
Love Is was written, engineered and produced by Steve Howe with further engineering and mixing by Curtis Schwartz. Howe comments: “I write in my own studio and then go to see Curtis in his studio. We expand the tracks and put them on Pro Tools and everything starts to be possible. At some point, probably around 2 years ago, Dylan came down to Curtis’s studio and we recorded the drums on some of the tracks. I could see a balance of five instrumental tracks and five songs and there was a feeling that it was an album, sitting there, looking at me.”

Brislin says, “It’s very straight forward, ‘get your confidence going, take on any obstacle, conquer the world’ song. It’s pretty timely in the world, today.”

08/04/2020: Arabs in Aspic Announce New Album for June 2020 and Release First Song
The band comment: “Madness and Magic is the first Arabs in Aspic album written for two drummers, with more acoustic guitar parts than previous albums. All the music was written and arranged in our studio and carefully put together like a puzzle with 50,000 pieces, to take the listener on a journey through life’s Madness and Magic, both musically and lyrically. The lyrics for Madness and Magic reflect on how easily both children and adults are affected in the digital age, but also how helpless we are when we have to put our lives in the hands of specialists. Many ideas came up after a brief meeting with Doctor Death. The message of Madness and Magic is up to the listener to decide.”
Tuesday also saw the release of their single “I Vow to Thee, My Screen”, which is the opening track from the album. According to the band, the song “describes the fascination and fear of our addiction to being entertained. The lyrics are heavily inspired by the British patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, my Country,” written by Cecil Spring-Rice in 1918”.
Based in Trondheim in Norway, Arabs In Aspic are Jostein Smeby on Guitars and vocals, Stig Jørgensen on Organs and vocals, Erik Paulsen on Bass and vocals, Eskil Nyhus on Drums and cymbals and Alessandro G. Elide on Percussion. Artwork for the album is provided by Julia Proszowska.

03/04/2020: Haken Announce New Album Virus for June 2020 and Launch First Single ‘Prosthetic’
Haken have revealed details of their new studio album Virus, the follow-up to 2018’s acclaimed album ‘Vector’, which will be released 5th June 2020. The band have released a short introduction giving some background to the new album;
Today also sees the launch of the album’s first single and opening track ‘Prosthetic’, with a video directed by Vicente Cordero. The band comments: “Prosthetic was the first song we completed during the ‘Virus’ writing sessions and we always felt it would be the perfect opener for the album. It’s a very guitar heavy track with its roots in 80s thrash riffing, but with the unconventional rhythmic twists and turns we often like to explore in Haken. We sadly never had a Jeff Hanneman and Robert Fripp collaboration, but this song at least draws on inspiration from them both! Lyrically the song is a bridge between our two albums Vector and Virus. The message was brilliantly brought to life by video director Vicente Cordero, who also beautifully captured the live energy of the band in a way that both enhances the song, and perfectly sets the scene for what’s to come.”
Drummer Ray Hearne reveals, “since releasing ‘The Mountain’ in 2013, one question has been asked of us time and time again, ‘who is the Cockroach King?’. This is something we were interested in exploring more deeply too, so we essentially did that through our music; elaborating and expanding upon the intervallic, harmonic, rhythmic and lyrical themes of that song. The end result is in an arc which spans across two albums: ‘Vector’ and ‘Virus’”.
Ross Jennings adds: “whilst ‘Virus’ can absolutely be enjoyed as a stand-alone work, it is thematically and conceptually linked with ‘Vector’, so our intention is to perform both albums back to back for a special performance someday”.
Longtime Haken collaborators, Blacklake, have designed the visuals and artwork and the album will be available as a Limited 2CD, Standard CD, Gatefold 2LP + CD & as Digital Album.

02/04/2020: Airbag Announce Fifth Studio Album A Day At The Beach for June Release on Karisma Records
Four years after the release of Disconnected, Airbag announce they will be releasing their fifth studio album A Day at the Beach. The album will be released on the 19th June on Karisma Records.
The band have also released a track from the new album called “Machines and Men”. The band comment: “This was one of the very first songs written for the album. The initial demo was basically just guitars, drums and vocals and during a period of working in the studio, rehearsing, and playing the song live, it slowly evolved into something new and fresh that defined most of the material we were working on. The lyrics describe the facts of war in a cold and objective fashion, only to turn to the spectator with a warning and a chance to look away”.
The album will feature six new songs recorded during the autumn and winter of 2019 – 2020 and is inspired by the resurgence of 1980s electronica, new wave and movie scores. Re-uniting with engineer Vegard Sleipnes, the album is mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo and produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis. Cover design is by vocalist Tostrup.

2. A Day at the Beach (Part 1)
3. Into the Unknown
5. A Day at the Beach (Part 2)
Airbag comment: “The album is the result of a strong collaboration between all three of us. Having lost two original members since our last album, we were forced to rethink how we write and create new music, but it also allowed us to venture into something new that turned out to be very inspiring. Lyrically, “A Day at the Beach” is very much a story of us and them, told by a husband, father and brother leaving his family behind into an unknown future. It’s the contrast between the desperate individual struggling to survive and people in power observing at a safe distance.”
A Day at the Beach will be available in CD, black and coloured vinyls

01/04/2020: Devin Townsend Announces Empath – The Ultimate Edition for 5th June 2020 Release
Devin Townsend has announced the forthcoming release of Empath – The Ultimate Edition on 5th June 2020. This comprehensive version of the 2019 album contains the original record and bonus discs across 2 CDs, plus 2 Blu-Ray discs. The first blu-ray contains the 5.1 Surround Sound mix by Devin, with visuals for the full record, plus a stereo visualiser. The second blu-ray contains a raft of bonus material, including Acoustically Inclined – Live in Leeds, a recording from his April 2019 acoustic tour where he performed tracks including ‘Love?’, ‘Deadhead’, ‘Thing Beyond Things’ & more.
It also features the full Empath Documentary, a ‘Genesis 5.1 Mixing Lesson’, a full album commentary & more. The four discs sit inside an art-book that contains new liner notes and images from the making of the album.
Devin comments: “On a technical level, I guess I have always been dissatisfied with the basic ‘stereo’ format in which the type of music I make gets presented in. Whether its headphones, computer speakers, stereos (or basically anything currently), I have had to figure out ways to get the work to function through TWO speakers. I hear things in a particularly orchestrated way, and with the amount of information that typically gets recorded per song, the result has been the dubious ‘wall of sound’ that I keep ending up with. But my intention has never been to make an oppressive experience, but rather something that is immersive and vast.
Making it work in two speakers just simply doesn’t quite work for the vision. Although I’ve managed to get the point across, (to varying degrees), things always have to compromise to make it all fit. Making the drums speak at the same time as orchestra, cymbals, guitars, choirs, synths etc.…all with my voice on top, ends up with every conceivable frequency fighting for breathing space between those two speakers.
Therefore, I asked the powers that be in my business world, to tolerate one more ‘kick at the can’ when it came to Empath. I wanted to attempt a surround mix and follow the original vision of it being an immersive, multimedia experience for people in the ways I could best achieve at this stage. And although it’s still pretty ‘dense’, with four more sources for the sound to come from, I feel its significantly closer to the original vision here.”
