25/03/2020: Bill Rieflin ~ RIP

Bill Rieflin ~ RIP

DGMLive report the sad passing of Bill Rieflin: “Goodbye Bill Rieflin 1960 – 2020. After a long battle with cancer, Bill Rieflin passed away yesterday.”

Toyah Wilcox spoke of Bill’s passing: “Dearest Bill Rieflin slipped from this world, yesterday, in Seattle from cancer.

He wasn’t alone but the virus meant no one other than patients where allowed to enter the hospital. Bill’s sister, Tracy, determined that Bill would not pass away without his family by his side stood outside on the pavement till the hospital allowed her in.”

Gavin Harrison paid tribute to his ‘drummer brother’: “I was lucky enough to know Bill Rieflin as one of my King Crimson drummer brothers. At the start of the three drummer project (2014) Bill and Pat came to my studio and we started to explore the rhythmic possibilities. Great creative times with good vibes and humour. I’m glad I got to spend some quality times with Bill. Most recently for an enlightening lunch in his home town of Seattle last December. He always had a very interesting take on things. Bon Voyage my friend. RIP”

Tributes continue to be posted… Rest in Peace Bill.

Porcupine Tree have launched a Bandcamp site for “rare and unreleased rarities from beyond our core record label releases”. Initially the site features a handful of live albums, however the intention is to keep adding to the collection…

BBC Session 13th April 2007 by Porcupine Tree

“We have launched a Bandcamp page at where you can listen and download full resolution recordings of rare and unreleased rarities from beyond our core record label releases. This has been a long time in the planning, and we do apologise for the poor timing, as we know this is a very difficult time for everyone, including us as musicians and our families. The upshot is that we have decided to go ahead and make the page live now as planned, but point out that there’s absolutely no rush to avail yourself of its contents, it will be around indefinitely and we aim to add more music to it over the coming months. In the meantime, if you are stuck at home and do feel like some extra-curricular PT music, here it is!”

17/03/2020: The Bloody Mallard Release New Single Ceremonial Synapses (ii)

Ceremonious Synapses (ii) is the 3rd single from heavy-psych instrumental prog band, The Bloody Mallard, from their album ‘Realm’. Released on 6th March 2020 as a self release via Onslaught Music, it is the 2nd of two songs under Ceremonious Synapses which explore the subject of neural pathways and behaviours within the human brain. Human consciousness and behaviours can be linked to the structure of these neural networks and based upon certain events in a person’s life (environmentally, traumatically, meditatively) these pathways can alter. The Ceremonious Synapses songs are thematically narrative of the conscious effort to change these pathways; part (i) focused one the frictioned physical and disciplined, whilst part (ii) focuses on the deeper and sub-conscious/ spiritual level of change.

The Bloody Mallard is a London-based rock project headed by guitarist, Tom Walding. After experimenting with melodies, rhythms and tones that were reminiscent of many mushroom trips in rural Kent, the sonic segments finally formed into songs which turned into the album, Realm. The album was produced recorded and mixed by Jarred Hearman (Katy B, Wretch 32, Mammal, John Butler Trio, The Prodigy, Slipknot) at Konk and City Sounds Studios and The Gin Factory.

15/03/2020: Fish postpones Weltschmerz UK tour with immediate effect

With the impending UK government decision to cancel all ‘mass gatherings’ and after discussion today with my promoter we have decided to postpone all UK touring with immediate effect.

This means that tomorrow night’s show at Holmirth will not be going ahead and all the UK shows in March are postponed and will be moved to future dates which as yet have to be determined. I’m sure you’ll appreciate that with the current chaos around the entire live music industry rescheduling is not an easy task and it will be at least December until we have new dates in place.

I’m sorry for those of you who have already made travel arrangements but I think most people will be glad that this decision has been made. The fast developing situation has dictated this change of plans and to be honest I am relieved to come off the road as although we had a fantastic night in Aberdeen last night the surrounding stress on all of us was immense. Apart from the 2 glorious hours on stage it was a highly uncomfortable experience for all concerned.

All tickets bought for the March UK shows will be valid for the rescheduled dates and I will get more information to you as soon as I can.

13/03/2020: Magnum forced to reschedule The Serpent Rings Tour

In a Press Statement today the band announce:

“It is with a heavy heart that we must finally concede to the inevitable.

A combination of government measures in numerous countries, and liaising with promoters and our co-headliners Gotthard has meant that ultimately the decision has been taken out of our hands.

The Serpent Rings Tour will be postponed until later this year and early next. Dates will be announced as soon as possible.

Those with tickets will be entitled to a refund or to attend rescheduled shows – information on this will be given as soon as we know more.

We’re very sorry to all the loyal fans who were looking forward to coming to see us. But even more than this we are sorry for those who will feel the financial impact of this for months and even years to come. Our friends, the crew, who now have empty diaries and no immediate prospect of new shows of any kind. Our support acts, promoters, venue staff, security, bar staff and the touring industry as a whole – all of whom face exceptionally hard times now.

It was never our intent to cause anger and hurt with our previous defiance. With so much already paid for, contracts all in place and the band all rehearsed and ready to go we had very little choice but to try and carry on despite mounting pressure. We really wanted to play more than you can imagine. We held on as long as we could.

Good luck to everyone in these troubled times. We’ll see you on the other side…”

12/03/2020: Steven Wilson releases first single from The Future Bites

Steven Wilson has announced he will release his new studio album, The Future Bites‘ in June and today he marks the news with the first single to be taken from the album, ‘the ten-minute long Moroder-esque’ Personal Shopper

Steven Wilson explains the new album The Future Bites is “an exploration of how the human brain has evolved in the Internet era. As well as being Wilson’s phenomenal sixth album, THE FUTURE BITES is also an online portal to a world of high concept design custom built for the ultra-modern consumer.”

The Future Bites will be released on 12th June 2020 via TFB and available in several formats CD | Cassette | Red and Black Vinyl LP | Blu-Ray | Boxset.

“Musically, THE FUTURE BITES gleams. Featuring gorgeous electronic sounds warped by human intervention (King Ghost), soaring acoustics that head straight upwards into the stratosphere (12 Things I Forgot), relentless bass-driven Motorik grooves (Follower) and swampish, murky funk (Eminent Sleaze), it is Steven’s most consistently brilliant work to date. The album was recorded in London and co-produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything) and Steven Wilson.

Online, THE FUTURE BITES is an open door to a world of purchase power where everything is marketable and nothing is too random to be put on sale. Inspired by such notable 21st century artefacts as the Virgil Abloh ceramic block and Vitality Air canned Canadian oxygen, The Future Bites is a fully designed consumer universe (built in collaboration with Baby and Crystal Spotlight) that’s been designed to be accessible and addictive to anyone from the casual fan to the hardcore collector.”

Steven Wilson plays two previously announced UK shows in the autumn at Nottingham Arena (Thursday 17th September) and London’s O2 (Saturday 19th September).

11/03/2020: Midnight Sun call it a day…

Midnight Sun

It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce that Midnight Sun are forced to cancel all forthcoming gigs and go on hiatus with immediate effect. We are particularly sorry to be missing the show with Lazuli in Chepstow on Saturday, March 14th and our appearance at We Låve Rock Festival, Norway.

The reasons are personal and it is unnecessary to go into them but we remain the best of friends and have no doubt that we’ll reconvene at some point! Sometimes, real life just gets in the way of the fun stuff. We’ve had a blast playing together and offer our sincere thanks to all the wonderful people who have helped and supported us along the way.

There will certainly be musical activity from the guys (Huw and Ian will be active with Also Eden during 2020), so we hope for your continued support 😊

Until the Midnight Sun rises again … so long and thanks for all the fish!

09/03/2020: King Crimson to Tour North America with The Zappa Band Summer 2020

King Crimson

King Crimson will be playing one tour this year in USA and Canada during June and July 2020. Except for shows such as the Ottawa Blues Festival, all the dates will be double bills with the Zappa Band.

“The Summer tour will be a throwback one for us in a few ways; great to be going back to outdoor venues, some of them the ‘sheds’ we played in the 1980’s. And we’ll be travelling by tour bus, old school! As for what pieces we’ll play, that hasn’t been decided yet, but will likely be a wide selection from the 50 years of Crimson repertoire. With 7 players on stage we can cover it all.” – Tony Levin

Since King Crimson’s return to live performance in 2014, with critically acclaimed sell-out shows all over the world their three-hour shows regularly include material from twelve of their thirteen studio albums, including many of the songs from their seminal 1969 album In The Court of the Crimson King, described by Pete Townshend, as an “uncanny masterpiece”. The new 7-piece line-up plays many historic pieces which Crimson have never played live, as well as new arrangements of Crimson classics – “the music is new whenever it was written”. There are also new instrumentals and songs, as well as the compositions by the three drummers, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey, which are a regular highlight. A unique show, where seven of the best musicians in the world play music without distraction or adornment.

06/03/2020: Bad Elephant Music announce debut release from Zopp

Zopp album coverZopp is the brainchild of composer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Stevenson, with collaborations from Andy Tillison and Theo Travis of prog legends The Tangent, and drummer Andrea Moneta (Leviathan). The band’s Canterbury-scene influenced instrumental progressive rock is an impressive addition to the BEM family.

Ryan is an award-winning composer, with credits for the music to many documentary films. In May 2019 he won Best Score in the IMDb industry-recognized American Tracks Music Awards for his work on The Perfect Gangster.

Zopp came to fruition in around 2010, born out of Ryan’s excursions into the Canterbury progressive rock scene of the 60s and 70s. As the music developed, Zopp has absorbed more influences, such as Stravinsky and Steve Reich as well as dabbling into the realm of ambient music. The sound is based upon vintage fuzz bass and Hammond organ sounds that weave with complex time signature changes, and on catchy melodies with ambient keyboard interludes, to charm and relax the listener with its beguiling fusion.

05/03/2020: Gentle Giant to release first 4 albums on vinyl in April

After the positive response to the box set “Unburied Treasure” many fans asked whether the vinyl albums would ever be available. The band has responded and decided to make these albums officially available for the first time in decades.

The band’s first album “Gentle Giant” was first released in October 1970. Produced by Tony Visconti it marks the 50th Anniversary of the recording and live appearances of the band. Tony Visconti produced the follow up album “Acquiring The Taste” in 1971.

The band oversaw the production of the third album “Three Friends” in 1972 and was the first official release in North America. Strangely the N.A. version featured the artwork from the U.K. “Gentle Giant” album.

This album was followed up with their milestone album “Octopus” in 1972. Once again the North American artwork was different to the Roger Dean U.K. version and featured a dye cut Octopus in a jar.

Released on the Alucard label, the albums will be manufactured in 180 gram vinyl with the original gatefold artwork from the U.K.

The vinyl boxset will be released on 3rd April 2020

Speaking exclusively to Prog, Collins says: “There were more reasons to do it than not to do it. If we had to do it the way we used to tour, I don’t think I’d be doing it. But nowadays it can be done differently, and I’ve been doing that for the last couple of years.

Adds Banks: “After Phil finished his own tour, everybody thought, ‘We could talk about it and see whether it’s a good idea.’

“Once we decided it was a possibility, we wanted to see how it would work out when we played together. So we spent a couple of weeks in January in New York seeing how it sounded. People asked, ‘Why are you here?’ We just said, ‘Oh, for a wedding.’”

Banks adds that having Nic Collins taking his father’s place behind the drum kit is a crucial part of the tour.

“Nic is a great drummer, but he is capable of sounding like early Phil. For Mike and I, that was always quite exciting. It means you can play some of the songs that you haven’t played with Phil as the drummer for a long time.

“We’re playing old material, but there’ll be some new old material this time. Songs we didn’t play last time.”

According to Banks, the band didn’t approach former singer Peter Gabriel or guitarist Steve Hackett to be part of the reunion.

“To get everyone on board would be quite difficult,” he says.

04/03/2020: ProgAid forced to cancel

ProgAidDespite a terrific line-up, and incredibly cheap tickets for the quality of said line-up, Prog Aid has been cancelled. The press release from Nine/Eight Touring reads as follows:

Nine/Eight Touring regretfully informs you that the PROGAID event is no longer going to proceed.

Despite our best efforts, there was not enough interest generated in ProgAid to make the event viable for all involved, and to make sure that the charities we were supporting would receive enough funds to make sure the bands who were travelling interstate would not be running at a loss.

We obviously never wanted this to happen, but the reality is it now has. We want to ensure our patrons and fans that this is not the end of Nine Eight Touring, and we will be back later this year with some amazing and incredible events local to the major cities.

We thank all those who bought a ticket, and rest assured we are currently organising with Moshtix for a refund for your tickets.

Finally we’d like to thank the bands who reached out to us, and who supported us in organising, and promoting this event, and the bands and people who donated their time to help us with the event.

The Nine Eight Touring Team.

02/03/2020: Stian Westerhus Shares Album Title-Track Redundance

Norwegian guitarist and singer Stian Westerhus has shared the title-track ahead of the release of his upcoming album Redundance on March 6th via House of Mythology.

Speaking about the track Stian Westerhus comments: “I performed ‘Redundance’ at Steinkjer Church in Norway back in 2015 as part of a commission from the local music festival, Steinkjerfestivalen. ‘Redundance’ is written as a cut-off and closure of a relationship. When I sang it the respective person was sitting there in the church, maybe unaware of the funeral taking place.

The new release brings Westerhus’s vocals to the fore while the instrumentation serves the songs rather than threatening to overwhelm them. Redundance is about confronting psychological trauma, Westerhus addressing an intolerable situation, cutting away at his personal history in order to forge a new way forward. There’s anger and sadness, but also a righteous desire to redefine the turbulence of the past, to tell the truth and to move on. Westerhus sings: “Swallowed my pride just to keep us alive, but never ever again”.

Redundance also tackles wider issues as well. Opening track Chase The New Morning is a addresses an oppressive Chinese regime that controls its citizens via online propaganda, a challenge to freedom that has been met with fierce resistance in Hong Kong. It was writing about this political struggle and fighting for what’s rightfully yours that inspired Westerhus to reflect on his own situation and revisit songs he’d previously “never dared to record (for being) too direct, too simple”.

02/03/2020: Kansas Reveal New Album and 2020 European Tour to Include UK Date

Kansas have revealed details of a new album to be released in June 2020. Entitled The Absence of Presence, the release will coincide with the group’s summer tour in conjunction with Foreigner and Europe. It has been produced by guitarist Zak Rizvi alongside Phil Ehart and Richard Williams at the band’s Real 2 Reel Studios in Stockbridge, USA.

Ehart comments: “This sounds like Kansas. Zak wrote the majority of The Prelude Implicit and this album, and now having Tom Brislin add a couple of his songs and his keyboard prowess really pushes the band even more toward that original sound, which is not easy to do by any means. You’ve got to have the material. You’ve got to have the singer to sing it. You’ve got to have lyrics that are Kansas-type lyrics. These guys get it, and the other four of us who have been here for 20, 40, 50 years, we’re just sitting here grinning, going ‘This is great!’

Tour Dates:
October 18 London, England Palladium
