25/02/2020: IO Earth Announce Details of New Album Aura

IO Earth have revealed details of their fifth studio album, Aura. Written by Dave Cureton and Adam Gough, the album represents “a departure from their usual writing style” in concentrating more on the exploration and development of melody.

Dave: We usually purposefully avoid repeating phrases too much in our music. We like to keep evolving the sound even within each song, to make sure that there is constant progression and shifting of tone and emotion.

Adam: But for “Aura”, we have changed instrumentation and arrangement, rather than the melody itself. We wanted to explore the melodies deeper, allow them to take life and grow.

Dave: Like in Waterfall, the melody repeats a few times, but it’s on piano, then it’s full orchestra, then it’s a guitar solo, then it’s in 7/4 rather than 4/4.

Adam: Yeah, the textures and overall tone of the song sections are always shifting, while using the established melodies as the keystone.

The album began life as an Ambient recording, with the intention of having long tracks of relaxing sounds and sparse piano, guitar, vocals added, but as the chord structures and melodies grew, so did the songs.

Dave: We had this starting point of “let’s make an ambient album”, but we never actually put limitations on our writing. If a song calls for drums, bass and a guitar solo, then that will happen.

Adam: … and in many cases for Aura, that is just what happened. We had these atmospheric pieces, that needed a vocal line or a string section. So we added them, and the songs just kept evolving. There are still elements that are atmospheric, but they are the exception now, rather than the majority!

A teaser for the album can be found here:

While writing material for the new release, Dave and Adam originally thought they would label what they are doing “Slow Prog” but eventually decided what they were doing was a natural extension of IO Earth’s vision.

24/02/2020: FM Announce New Album Synchronized for April 2020 Release

FM have announced details of a new album to be released in April 2020. Synchronized will comprise 12 tracks and is already available for pre-order. The title track of the album has also been released;

FM were formed in 1984 when singer Steve Overland and his brother, guitarist Chris (both formerly of Wildlife), teamed up with drummer Pete Jupp (ex-Wildlife and Samson) and bassist Merv Goldsworthy (ex-Diamond Head and Samson). They were soon joined by Didge Digital on keyboards and by December of that year had secured a record deal with CBS/Portrait and headed to Germany for a run of dates with Meat Loaf. Further tours with Tina Turner, Foreigner and Gary Moore built their momentum and in September 1986 FM released their debut album ‘Indiscreet’ (featuring the hugely popular single ‘Frozen Heart’) to great critical acclaim. The year also ended on a high when they supported the white-hot Bon Jovi on their ‘Slippery When Wet’ tour.

For the next nine years FM consolidated their position at the forefront of British melodic rock, touring extensively as headliners and also joining bands such as Status Quo and Whitesnake on tours to promote releases such as ‘Tough It Out’ (1989), ‘Takin’ It To The Streets’ (1991), with Andy Barnett replacing Chris Overland, ‘Aphrodisiac’ (1992) and their ‘final’ album, ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ (1995), with new recruit Jem Davis (Tobruk, UFO) on keyboards.

Following a twelve year sabbatical, FM were persuaded to return to the stage for a one-off headlining slot at Firefest IV, held at Rock City in Nottingham in 2007. The favourable reception from the sold-out crowd led to the band making a swift decision to record a new album and, following a return to Firefest in 2009, they released their sixth studio album ‘Metropolis’ in 2010 with Jim Kirkpatrick replacing Andy Barnett on lead guitar. FM subsequently released ‘Rockville’ and ‘Rockville 2’ (both 2013), ‘Heroes And VIllains’ (2015) and ‘Atomic Generation’ (2018) as well as ‘Indiscreet 30’ (a re-recorded version of their debut album) and the live CD/DVD ’The Italian Job’.

19/02/2020: Glass Hammer to Release New Album Dreaming City on 17th April 2020

Glass Hammer have revealed plans to release their 19th studio album on 17th April 2020. Dreaming City sees the band go back to the narrative of their 2005 album Inconsolable Secret.

Bassist Steve Babb believes the new release is possibly the band’s “most powerful musical statement to date” and tells the story of a desperate man battling against the odds through various horrors in order to rescue his lover. Time is an important factor in completing this quest, adding layers of tension to the music.

Babb acknowledges the music carries something of an homage to space rock, Berlin-School electronica, 70s metal and early progressive rock – but is quick to add “It’s all done in a way that is distinctly Glass Hammer of course“.

Artists making an appearance on Dreaming City include Susie Bogdanowicz, Brian Brewer, Aaron Raulston, Fred Schendel along with vocalists John Beagley and Reese Boyd.

18/02/2020: Toundra Premiere the Third Single From Their Upcoming New Album Das Cabinet Der Dr. Caligari

Toundra have premiered a new single and video taken from their new album Das Cabinet Der Dr. Caligari, which is due for release on February 28th. The band comment: “This track is probably the most Pink Floyd oriented we ever did. The music clashes with Alan’s disappearance, Francis’ best friend, the true main role in the movie. It’s beautiful to see that the most collective act of the movie is also the one in which we started from improvisation.

The album is a creative soundtrack to a quintessential German silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene that turns exactly 100 years old in 2020. The band approached it as a dialogue with the listener with the intention of questioning ideas like manipulation, freedom and human nature itself.

There will also be a tour where people will have a unique opportunity to watch the movie while the band performs the album in its entirety.

28.02.20, Madrid, Teatros del Canal
06.03.20, Zaragoza, Las Armas
07.03.20, Barcelona, Aribau Multicines
16.03.20, Hamburg, Knust
17.03.20, Jena, Kassablanca
18.03.20, München, Backstage
19.03.20, Siegen, Vortex
20.03.20, Darmstadt, 806qm
21.03.20, Martigny, Caves Du manoir
22.03.20, Stuttgart, Club Zentral

The band believe “‘Das Cabinet des Dr.Caligari’ is a movie with a very strong visual energy. It’s a film that takes elements of the terror movies to speak about authoritarianism. About how ideas can be controlled and eventually lead a human individual to do the worst things. It was premiered in between-war period, and it represents an advice about the real danger of some ideologies that nowadays are getting a new life across Europe; ideologies based in intolerance. That’s why we like to see this film as historical document that invites to some conscious thinking rather than let ourselves go where intolerants want to take us.

The artwork has been done by Riki Blanco and it features all the iconic elements of the movie.

14/02/2020: Obiymy Doschu return with their first music video in nine years

Ukrainian ensemble Obiymy Doschu return with their first music video in nine years. Na Vidstani (At Distance) was directed by Ukrainian videographer Andriy Korotych and offers a taste of Obiymy Doschu’s upcoming, third full-length album, expected to be released somewhere in 2021.

Na Vidstani is a song about urban loneliness — a feeling of isolation in a crowded environment, about how people keep distance from each other in modern society, even when they share a lot in common.”

Like the band’s previous album Son, the new song was mixed by The Pineapple Thief’s Bruce Soord, also known for collaborations with Opeth, Anathema, Katatonia, Riverside and Tesseract.

14/02/2020: Mariana Semkina releases Still Life video

Still Life is taken from the Iamthemorning vocalist Mariana Semkina’s new solo album Sleepwalking, released today through the Kscope label.

“Following the success of four highly praised albums with Iamthemorning, the lyricist, singer and co-songwriter Marjana Semkina’s spellbinding debut solo album, Sleepwalking is out now through Kscope. The album will be released under an alternative spelling – Mariana Semkina.

Characterised by her composed and unique voice, complex melodic lines and poetic lyrics with literary references, Semkina has often compared favourably with Kate Bush. The new material draws from the Iamthemorning soundscape but exists fully in Marjana’s world; a compelling mixture of alternative folk, pop, drama, beauty and emotionally purging lyrics.”

Marjana explains the motivation behind releasing a solo album “It wasn’t my plan to ascribe any profound meaning or concept to creating Sleepwalking, it’s purpose was more personally therapeutic, it was supposed just to help me get through some dark times, and at the end of that period in my life I found myself, not only renewed but with a collection of songs that were too personal to release under any other name other than my own.”

She continues “I wanted to use Sleepwalking as a way to translate emotions in the most sincere and unrefined way. No sugarcoating, no filters, just creative, honest thought caught in the moment. Turning those dark times and feelings into pure creative energy, something beautiful, something that has purpose”

The album features special guests Jordan Rudess (who appears on this track), Nick Beggs and Craig Blundell.

11/02/2020: Myrkur releases new video from forthcoming Folkesange album

Danish composer, vocalist and classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Myrkur (Amalie Bruun), releases a video Leaves of Yggdrasil, a track from the forthcoming Folkesange album…

“Myrkur journeys into the heart of Scandinavian culture. Through Bruun’s crystalline vocals, an array of traditional instruments and storytelling, ‘Folkesange’ offers listeners an immersive, emotional and transcendent experience that resonates in today’s turbulent times.”

“On Myrkur’s first two full-length studio albums (2015’s M and 2017’s Mareridt), she recast black metal in the most personal yet expansive of terms, their blending of Bruun’s Danish folk roots with tempestuous internal struggles breathing new life into a subgenre whose followers can be rigidly possessive.

After the nightmare-induced visions that wrought themselves throughout 2017’s immensely acclaimed Mareridt, Folkesange offers an emotional sanctuary, a means to reconnect to something permanent and nature-aligned. It’s an awareness that’s become deeply bound to the album’s organic, regenerative spirit.”

Folkesange, which will be released in several formats will be released on 20th March 2020 via Relapse.

11/02/2020: Lyle Mays ~ RIP

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of 11 times Grammy award winner, keyboardist and co-founding member of the Pat Metheny Group – Lyle Mays. The announcement was made in a statement on the Pat Metheny website…

Pat Metheny: “Lyle was one of the greatest musicians I have ever known. Across more than 30 years, every moment we shared in music was special. From the first notes we played together, we had an immediate bond. His broad intelligence and musical wisdom informed every aspect of who he was in every way. I will miss him with all my heart.”

Steve Rodby: “I had the great privilege of having Lyle in my life for decades, as an inspiration and as my friend. As anyone who knew him and his music will agree, there will only be one Lyle, and we all will continue to appreciate his soulful brilliance, in so many ways.”

11/02/2020: Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion Announce Sampo Axelsson as New Bass Player

Hasse Fröberg and Musical Companion have announced new bass player Sampo Axelsson will be joining the band.

Hasse comments: “I know I speak on behalf of all of HFMC when I say Sampo will be a force to be reckoned with. He is not only a great bass player, he’s an arranger and composer as well. This is of course fantastic and something HFMC can benefit from immensely.

Sampo adds: “I’m very excited to be a part of HFMC and I’m very much looking forward to join the journey with Hasse, Ola, Anton and Kjell. When Hasse called me and asked if I was interested in joining HFMC I didn’t have to think for one minute: Do I want to play in a band with talented and versatile musicians and songwriters? Yes, of course! Over the years I have played a lot of different music styles and I’ve also had the pleasure to tour and collaborate with a number of great bands and artist like: Mats Levén, Glenn Hughes, Pontus Snibb/Bonafide, Toehider and many more. I’m thrilled and honored to be given this opportunity and I will do my utmost to contribute to Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion’s future.”

Drummer Ola Strandberg chips in: “It feels truly great to have Sampo in the band as my new rhythm section colleague. He is an old time friend, and we have played along-side in a number of bands, his skills in playing bass and several other instruments makes him a great asset to the band in many ways. Sampo shares much of the same musical background as the rest of us, so playing together feels very easy and natural. A very exciting time lies ahead to start the next chapter in the story of HFMC.

Keyboardist Kjell Haraldsson adds: “Sampo is a super cool bloke and a very highly reputable musician. It’s a great honor to have him on board and I really look forward to working with him both live and in the studio. If HFMC is nitro then Sampo is the glycerine.

Guitarist Anton Lindsjö finishes up by saying: “I’m the only guy in the band that hadn’t met Sampo before he tried out for HFMC, but I had heard of him and that he was a killer bassist. But, as I have played with a lot of different bass players and know what great impact a bass player’s style has on the sound of the band, I was a little afraid of how things would work out. Turns out that Sampo not only nailed the music first take with all the punch, depth and groove that is needed, he also incorporated his own personality into the music in a way that takes the band in a new exciting direction, without losing the foundation. He plays with a lot of nuance and playfulness, and most importantly, he locked in with Ola right away. I think we all were a bit blown away about how well prepared and professional he was. Sampo is also a super down to earth guy and I’m really looking forward to getting to know him more. Good times ahead!

06/02/2020: Ayreon to Release Electric Castle Live And Other Tales on 27th March 2020

On March 27, Music Theories Recordings/Mascot Label Group will release Ayreon’s Electric Castle Live And Other Tales, a 3 LP/2CD+DVD/BD set of last year’s live performance of the third Ayreon album Into The Electric Castle. Over four nights at Tilburg’s 013 venue (the scene of Lucassen’s Ayreon Universe series of live shows in 2017) Lucassen, his band along with an impressive cast celebrated the 20th anniversary of Into the Electric Castle in front of 12,000 fans from 64 different countries who had flown in from around the world.

The live event features Fish, Simone Simons (Epica), Damian Wilson (Headspace), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), Edward Reekers (Kayak), George Oosthoek (Orphanage), Edwin Balogh (Ayreon), Marcela Bovio (MaYan), Robert Soeterboek (Star One) as well as the band of Joost van den Broek (After Forever/Star One), Johan van Stratum (VUUR), Marcel Singor, Ferry Duijsens (VUUR), Bob Wijtsma (Ex Libris), Ben Mathot (Dis/Guilt Machine), Ed Warby (Gorfest), Robby Valentine Valentine) and Thijs van Leer (Focus).

Lucassen comments: “Because it was the 20th anniversary of the album, and we’d just remixed and re-released it, we figured it was the perfect moment to perform this live. The Ayreon Universe shows were such a fantastic experience for everyone involved, and I’d had loads of requests for more live shows, so we decided to perform the entire ‘Electric Castle’ album back at the 013, and also play one track from each of my side projects billed as ‘Other Tales’.”

Released in 1998, Into The Electric Castle is a tale of an epic quest. Set in “no time and no space”, it tells the story of eight individuals who are guided by a mysterious voice and tasked with finding the mysterious Electric Castle. The original album features amongst others Fish (the Highlander), Lucassen (the Hippie), Edwin Balogh (The Roman), Anneke van Giersbergen (the Egyptian), Damian Wilson (the Knight) and Edward Reekers (the Futureman), all of whom repeated their performances for the live show.

Also among the 22 musicians and singers who made up the impressive cast list were long-time Lucassen collaborators Thijs Van Leer (Focus), Simone Simons (Epica), John Jaycee Cuijpers (Praying Mantis), Marcela Bovio and musicians Joost van den Broek, Johan van Stratum, Marcel Singor, Ferry Duijsens, Bob Wijtsma and Ben Mathot.

Lucassen comments: “I poured my heart and soul into it. Investing everything I had both financially and creatively, and enlisted the best instrumentalists and singers I could find in the world at that time. When making the album I was unconstrained by any musical or stylistic boundaries and incorporated many of my favourite musical styles. ‘Into The Electric Castle’ received an overwhelmingly positive reception from both the press and the fans. This firmly established the Ayreon name, making Ayreon the perfect project to pour all of my time and creative energy into.

05/02/2020: Elder Announce New Album Omens for April 2020 Release

Elder have revealed details of their new LP Omens, to be released on 24th April 2020 via Stickman Records. This will be their first LP since Reflections of a Floating World.

The band comment: “Omens is our most complete work to date: a set of songs that express the breadth of the band’s collective influences. Integrating the floating, textured jams of last year’s “The Gold & Silver Sessions” into our evolving heavy progressive sound has yielded another expansion of the Elder sound. We’re very proud of this record and can’t wait to share it with you all!

Formed in a small coastal town in Massachusetts in the mid noughties, Elder have developed their sound over the course of five albums to grow from beginnings rooted in the stoner/doom scene into one of the most unique voices in the prog and rock underground. Their compositions unfold as journeys, showing influences of styles from the 70s to the present within a single song. After thirteen years, this is the first full-length recorded with a new lineup including guitarist Michael Risberg and new drummer Georg Edert, along with guest performances by Fabio Cuomo on Rhodes piano and synthesizers.

Track List:
1. Omens
2. In Procession
3. Halcyon
4. Embers
5. One Light Retreating

Elder will be touring the USA in May 2020. See dates below.

03/02/2020: Riverside Announce Maciej Meller As A Permanent Fourth Member of the Band

In an announcement posted to their Facebook page today, Riverside announce they are a quartet again. The announcement reads:

“Riverside are a quartet again!!!

Dear friends, this is an incredibly important moment in the history of our band. From the beginning of February 2020, Riverside are officially not a trio any more, we are a quartet! It is with incredible joy that we would like to announce that the fourth official member of the band is…

Well, you can’t have expected anyone else?

He’s been with us for over three years. He let us recover from the tragic loss we have all experienced, he helped us survive and become, from year to year, a better and better live band. He has been our friend and our brother. We are welcoming him in our midst with great joy, in which we hope you will also share!

Ladies and gentlemen, on the guitars in Riverside: Maciej Meller!

Being a good guitarist and loving music is one thing, but being able to fit in with your personality, incredible modesty and humility, that’s an incredibly important thing in our band. Maciej meets all the criteria and we are truly happy that he wants to continue our journey with us.

***

We still remember. And we still go back to the moment when, after we lost Piotr, in 2016, the massive amount of your support made us continue as Riverside. We were not ready to invite anyone to our family at that time. “Wasteland” had to be recorded as a trio. We simply had to cope with the loss on our own.

Now, it’s high time for Riverside to have a guitarist in the line-up again, not only during live shows but also in the studio, when working on new material. So we are really pleased to let you know that after coming back from the final, spring edition of the Wasteland Tour 2020, together with Maciek, in the new line-up, we will start working on the eighth album.

The upcoming spring concerts will have a different character, a different tone, and Riverside will sound mightier than ever before. We would really like to see you there!

Last but not least – Piotr Grudziński will always be in our hearts, we all still love him and we will never forget him. But we have to move on. We are on a journey, they are waiting for us. There is more to create in this life, more to see, more to know, more to save. We hope that you will decide to stay with us again and that you will let us help one another through all of this.

We are here with you and for you.

Riverside”

03/02/2020: Pure Reason Revolution Launch ‘Silent Genesis’ From Their Forthcoming Album Eupnea

Pure Reason Revolution recently announced the release of Eupnea, their first new studio album in nearly 10 years. Scheduled for release on the 3rd April 2020, they have today revealed the first piece of new music taken from the record in the form of the epic 10-minute ‘Silent Genesis’, a track which Jon Courtney co-wrote alongside original PRR member Greg Jong.

The band comment: “With some tracks it’s blood sweat & tears to get them nailed, but “Silent Genesis” came together really quickly. While Greg & I worked on the music, Chloe was blasting out vocals in London. We had a lot of fun making this track; mangling synths, riffing & unexpectedly outroing with funk!

Eupnea features the work of artist Jill Doherty on its front cover and will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP + CD (with etching on Side D) and as a digital album.

Track List:
1. New Obsession 05:09
2. Silent Genesis 10:20
3. Maelstrom 05:44
4. Ghosts & Typhoons 08:45
5. Beyond Our Bodies 04:28
6. Eupnea 13:23

The band comment: “We stuck to our manifesto of no musical boundaries and the result was ‘Eupnea’. We return to a more progressive sound with ferocious guitars, thunderous drums and the stacked harmonies that give us our signature sound. We’re excited to begin playing it live.

You can watch an interview clip where Jon Courtney and Chloë Alper discuss the process of getting back together last year, and playing Midsummer Prog;

The band currently have two confirmed Summer festival dates, performing at Night Of The Prog Festival in Germany on the 17th of July, and Ramblin Man Fair in the UK on the 18th of July.
