31/01/2020: Katatonia Reveal Details For Their New 11th Studio Album City Burials

In days and nights of black and silver, the dead end king will come. From pieces of broken mirrors there will be a crown bestowed upon his head. In reflections of shattered glass not only the seasons will turn, but also the change disguised by the lapse of time. His mind will have to come to bear the weight of everything that was left behind and forgotten. Archiving the inaccessible. Celebrating the abandoned and mourning the destroyed. The city burials.
Anders Nyström

Katatonia, originally formed in 1991 and having taken a break since the end of 2016, are returning with a new album City Burials. Running at 58 minutes, the album contains both well-crafted melodies as well as idiosyncratic arrangements. City Burials sees the band return to their heavy metal roots, via several moments of exuberant, old school classicism. The album will be supported by plans for extensive touring around the world.

City Burials was produced by Nyström/Renkse and recorded at Soundtrade Studios, Tri-Lamb Studios & The City Of Glass, throughout October & November 2019, with engineering work handled by Karl Daniel Lidén and mixing and mastering from Jacob Hansen, who states “Once in a while you end up working with artists that are special, and that particular session being something you’ll remember forever. This session is one of them, and only for good things! Proud to say I mixed and mastered the new Katatonia album”.

City Burials also sees the return to the Katatonia fold of Anders Eriksson (Frank Default) beloved for his keyboard contributions to Night Is The New Day, Dead End Kings and various remixes. Artwork appears courtesy of Lasse Hoile, the image itself representing the ongoing era of the Dead End King.

30/01/2020: Marillion’s Script For A Jester’s Tear to Receive Deluxe 4CD/Blu-ray Reissue in April

Marillion’s Script For a Jester’s Tear will receive a lavish 4CD/Blu-ray and Vinyl Deluxe Edition of the band’s debut album. To be released on 3rd April from Rhino Records, the release will contain new mixes, the Market Square Heroes EP, an unreleased concert, along with a new documentary.

Rhino will produce two versions of Script. The first is a 4CD/Blu-ray set, the other is a 4LP collection. The music will also be available the same day through digital and streaming services.

Originally produced by Nick Tauber, Script for a Jester’s Tear is the only Marillion album to feature Fish (vocals), Steve Rothery (guitar), Pete Trewavas (bass), Mark Kelly (keyboards) and Mick Pointer (drums). Both editions open with a newly remixed stereo version of Script for a Jester’s Tear by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. In addition, the collections also feature new stereo remixes for the b-side “Charting The Single” that was released in January 1982, as well as the Market Square Heroes EP that followed in October that same year.

Both versions also include the debut of a previously unreleased concert that captures Marillion performing in London at the Marquee Club on December 29, 1982. Recorded a few months before Script for a Jester’s Tear was released, the show features live versions of all six album tracks: “He Knows You Know,” “The Web,” “Garden Party,” “Chelsea Monday,” “Forgotten Sons” and the title track.

The concert also features performances of non-album tracks like “Three Boats Down From The Candy” and the 19-minute epic “Grendel” from the Market Square Heroes EP. A live version of “Margaret” is also included. A different version of that song appeared in June 1983 as the b-side for the “Garden Party” single.

The Blu-ray features 96k/24-bit versions of the new stereo remixes for Script for a Jester’s Tear and the Market Square Heroes EP, as well as the Live at the Marquee Club concert. The disc also includes a 5.1 Surround Remix of Script for a Jester’s Tear. Rounding out the collection is a new documentary with band interviews that covers the 1979 formation of Marillion in Aylesbury through the release of Script for a Jester’s Tear in 1983.

29/01/2020: Daniel Cavanagh Releases New Extended Edition of Acoustic Album Monochrome / Colour

Daniel Cavanagh (Anathema) has released an extended edition of his 2017 solo album, Monochrome. The new release includes four new studio recordings featuring two newly recorded acoustic versions of album songs and two brand new songs “Found” and “Scandinavia” on this special extended edition of the album – Monochrome / Colour.

Inspired by internal feelings of love and loss, Monochrome is a deeply reflective and personal offering. Cavanagh elaborates: “The album has a late night, candlelit feeling, evoking the light of dusk as the summer sun sinks below the horizon, setting the scene for thoughts and meditations that many people will relate to.  A lot of this material could easily have made it on to the last Anathema album or any future album; that’s how highly the band rate it. There are several highlights: “The Exorcist” and “The Silent Flight of the Raven Winged Hours” are among some of my best works of the last decade. Taking them from the band was not an easy decision but I am glad; they’re so personal as to not need more input.

Monochrome features Anneke Van Giersbergen – ex-vocalist for The Gathering, who has since sung with Devin Townsend, Árstíðir, Anathema and Arjen Lucassen – and Anna Phoebe provides violin on three of the album tracks. Recorded at Grammy Award-winning Parr Street Studios, engineered by Andrea Wright, mastered by Anathema’s Daniel Cardoso, and with artwork by illustrator Danny Branscombe, this album is a special addition to the Kscope family. The album is being released on CD & digitally.

Track List
1. The Exorcist (6:43)
2. This Music (4:50)

23/01/2020: Wishbone Ash to Celebrate 50th Anniversary With New Album Coat of Arms

Wishbone Ash have announced the release of a new studio album Coat of Arms to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. Set for release on 28th February 2020 on Steamhammer/SPV the album will be available as a DigiPak CD, double 140 gram black vinyl Gatefold LP, download and stream.

Coat Of Arms, while still featuring Wishbone Ash’s characteristic twin lead guitars, haunting melodies and distinctive stylistic facets, will also explore new elements which balance the past, present and future. Lead single We Stand As One is complemented with a video clip shot at the band’s recent packed-out Islington 02 Academy concert on 17th October 2020, and is set to be released on 31st January 2020. Founder member, guitarist and vocalist Andy Powell proudly describes the track as “A real heavy rock anthem in the spirit of Wishbone Ash classics such as ‘The Warrior’, featuring awesome guitar sounds that our fans will love.

Alongside Andy Powell are bassist Bob Skeat and drummer Joe Crabtree. The band have also been reinforced for the last three years by new addition Mark Abrahams on guitar. Powell comments: “Mark has brought two important factors to the band: youthfulness and energy, a little like when somebody injects you with a strong stimulant. What’s more, he learnt the guitar by playing along to Wishbone Ash since the age of nine. Mark is a fan and knows some of our songs better than I do.” So it comes as no surprise that the two guitarists make an excellent songwriting duo; “For example, Mark came up with the basic idea for ‘It´s Only You I See’, a number that to him is a kind of homage to ‘You Rescue Me’ from our ‘New England’ album.

Powell reflects: “Following the countless songs that we have written throughout the history of Wishbone Ash, my own expectations are extremely high. On the one hand as a composer you try not to repeat yourself in your creative output but to come up with new ideas all the time, on the other you want to remain faithful to your style. Good songs need an inner conviction and the right inspiration. We had both when we started working on ‘Coat Of Arms’. You’d be right in describing the current line-up as the best in the history of Wishbone Ash. We all love our lives as musicians, the direct contact with our fans, travelling, the shows, our songs. It’s that commitment by everybody involved that you hear in every single note on ‘Coat Of Arms’.”

14/01/2020: British Reissue Label RPM to Release Final Collection in May 2020

British reissue label RPM will be releasing their final collection in May 2020. After 29 years the label which prides itself on being “by collectors for collectors” is bowing out.

Founded in May 1991, the label has released 612 different titles. The first three were issued together in November 1991: Sandie Shaw’s Reviewing the Situation , The Q Tips Live and Joe Meek & The Blue Men’s I Hear A New World. RPM’s final release will be Super Sonics, a box set of Junkshop Britpop. RPM lead the way with its series of Junkshop Glam compilations. Now, Britpop is put under the same microscope.

Mark Stratford, RPM’s co-founder and owner, has decided it is time for the final chapter. He comments: “So much has changed in our micro-pool of the record industry. The music business in general has changed, and so have reissues and collector compilations, as has how such music reaches people. RPM has been a physical label when that was meaningful. When we started, we presented material others weren’t touching. I feel now that RPM had said all it had to say and so it was time for the concluding statement. We’ve had a decent run, but couldn’t quite make 30 years for some kind of anniversary finish. With Super Sonics, the final chapter does hold a bit of poetry. When RPM started, we looked back 25 years to the mid 1960s and with our final release we again look back 25 years – shockingly, to the mid 1990s.”

RPM has issued benchmark releases defining what reissues should be. In 2010, Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl, Gorillaz) said “most of the music I’m listening to is on RPM: Stavely Makepeace, Mike Sarne, Joe Meek, The Shangri-Las, Mark Wirtz, Brett Smiley and Crushed Butler.” Amongst the essentials are the first-ever issue of sonic maverick Joe Meek’s space fantasy I Hear A New World, auteur producer Mark Wirtz’s complete A Teenage Opera and American band The Aerovons late-‘60s masterpiece Resurrection. The Velvet Tinmine and Glitterbest compilations redefined the 1970s, celebrating the Junkshop Glam phenomenon, a fascination capped in 2019 by the critically acclaimed, best-selling box set All The Young Droogs. The Dream Babes series pinned down Britain’s 1960s girl scene – it wasn’t just Cilla, Dusty and Sandie. The February 2017 box set Am I Dreaming became the last word on this subject.

In May 2016, the double-CD collection Sharon Signs To Cherry Red took a different tack: looking at female music from the 1980s. Nightschool Records would release a vinyl version and Rough Trade stores made it album of the week.

RPM has often worked with partners on sub-imprints and series. Junkshop Glam guru Phil King brought in the five-album Repressed series, digging into ‘70s Pop Electronica. British Jazz was covered with Turtle Records and RPM had a mini-series courtesy of collector legend Phil Smee, the founder of the ground-breaking Bam Caruso label – which influenced RPM . With author, journalist and music historian Kieron Tyler, RPM International explored ‘60s and ‘70s collectables from beyond the UK and US. Shout! Records brought on board soul music expert Clive Richardson for 82 titles curating classic soul and R&B.

Mark acknowledges that “sales of physical formats have declined but, ironically, RPM releases from the past couple of decades have themselves become collectable. Velvet Tinmine, 2003’s Junkshop Glam compilation which kicked it all off sells for up to £70. From 1997, Janie Jones’ We’re In Love With The World Of attracts £40. The Clare Torry collection Heaven In The Sky from 2006 fetches at least £30. Whatever happens, RPM lives on. For a label living ‘by collectors for collectors’, that’s pretty satisfying.”

Mark Stratford will be closing the book in May 2020. “I have been looking for a final chapter since making the decision to close the label a while ago,” he says. “Am I Dreaming and All The Young Droogs were very specific statements which had to be made, and after that it was about finding the right moment to end. Super Sonics will be it.

The RPM back catalogue will remain available through Cherry Red for as long as licenses last, but after Super Sonics there will be no more new releases.

07/01/2020: Joel Vandroogenbroeck, Belgian Experimental Music Pioneer & Founder of Brainticket, Passes Away At The Age Of 81

Joel Vandroogenbroeck has passed away at the age of 81. Joel was considered to be a musical pioneer whose classical and jazz training combined with his passion for computers and electronic synthesizers united the digital and analog worlds, creating some of the most forward-thinking music of the 1970s. Born in Brussels, Vandroogenbroeck earned numerous accolades as a young pianist and was touring Europe by the time he was a teenager. But as the musical and cultural explosion brought on by the ‘60s spread throughout the world, Vandroogenbroeck found himself drifting further outside of the mainstream to a place of exploration and experimentation in psychedelic music inspired by bands such as Tangerine Dream and Amon Duul II.

He formed his own band, Brainticket, who released their debut album Cottonwoodhill in 1971. Psychonaut followed the next year and the epic Celestial Ocean capped things off in 1973. These early albums along with the later period Brainticket recordings constitute some of the finest electronic psych music ever laid down.

Vandroogenbroeck teamed with Los Angeles-based indie label Cleopatra Records to reissue his catalogue of albums along with unreleased and rare live recordings for Cleopatra’s Purple Pyramid imprint. He also revived Brainticket in 2015 with what proved to be their final album Past, Present & Future helped by the likes of UK Subs guitarist Nicky Garratt and German industrial artist Jürgen Engler of Die Krupps.

Brian Perera of Cleopatra Records comments: “I am honored & lucky to have known him. He was such a gifted & talented person, he will be truly missed by everyone at Cleopatra & all who loved his music.
