28/11/2019: Marjana Semkina Releases Debut Solo Album Sleepwalking on Kscope
Featuring Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Craig Blundell & Nick Beggs (Steven Wilson) and the St. Petersburg Orchestra “1703”, the album will be released under an alternative spelling – Mariana Semkina.
Characterised by her composed and unique voice, complex melodic lines and poetic lyrics with literary references, the new material draws from the Iamthemorning soundscape but exists fully in Marjana’s world – a compelling mixture of alternative folk, pop, drama, beauty and emotionally purging lyrics.
Marjana comments: “It wasn’t my plan to ascribe any profound meaning or concept to creating Sleepwalking, it’s purpose was more personally therapeutic, it was supposed just to help me get through some dark times, and at the end of that period in my life I found myself, not only renewed but with a collection of songs that were too personal to release under any other name other than my own.”
She continues “I wanted to use Sleepwalking as a way to translate emotions in the most sincere and unrefined way. No sugarcoating, no filters, just creative, honest thought caught in the moment. Turning those dark times and feelings into pure creative energy, something beautiful, something that has purpose”
A taster of the the new songs can be heard here:
The album artwork makes reference to Semkina’s love for classical art, unifying photography with the 17th-Century Vanitas movement; “I am a big lover of classical art, and with this cover I wanted to create some sort of a unity between medium of photography and the Vanitas art movement, a genre of still life painting. The paintings of the genre usually contain collections of objects symbolic of the inevitability of death and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements and pleasures; it exhorts the viewer to consider mortality, which is extremely close to where this album came from.”

26/11/2019: Godsticks Reveal New album Inescapable and April 2020 UK Tour
The new release will develop their distinctive sound further. The band’s sound has refined over their releases on Kscope, beginning with the technically outstanding metal on Emergence to the more industrial and progressive-influenced Faced With Rage. Inescapable sees the band channelling their energy and technical ability into the melody, phrasing and vocal performance, allowing emotion to take centre stage.
The band found themselves wanting a definitive theme running through Inescapable, without turning it into a concept album. Using a more open, more personal and ultimately inquisitive approach, the release shines light on Charles’s struggle with inner demons which gave the songs a new level of intimacy. “Lyrically, I’ve always shared personal thoughts, feelings and experiences but in a very ambiguous way. For Inescapable – in a conscious effort not to repeat ourselves – I thought I’d be a little more self-reflective and perhaps examine some of my inner demons. I have a strange relationship with music, and especially playing guitar. I would struggle to survive without either, but equally they have made my life mentally torturous because my own self-worth is completely wrapped up in them. I used to be very much a perfectionist in my early years, and whilst some people may wear that as a badge of honour, I eventually viewed it as huge heavy weight dragging down. It was a long time before I arrived at the realisation that perfection was impossible to achieve.”
The band have also revealed the first single and video from the album – “Denigrate” (feat. Daniel Tompkins). “Denigrate”, “the writing of this song was a sort of analysis of my ongoing battle with perfectionism and the general feeling that nothing you do ever meets the impossibly high standards you set for yourself”. The song features additional vocals from TesseracT’s vocalist Daniel Tompkins to record vocal harmonies, adding an extra layer of aggression and energy.
Godsticks will be supporting the new material beginning in April with a UK tour followed by summer festivals

18/11/2019: Lonely Robot Announces ‘An Evening With’ Series of Live Dates for February 2020
An evening with Lonely Robot 2020 brings the Lonely Robot live experience, featuring Craig Blundell on drums (Steve Wilson, Steve Hackett, Frost), Steve Vantsis on bass (Fish, Tilt) and Liam Holmes on keys. 15th February 2020 – Muziekgieterij, Maastricht, Netherlands
John comments of the Lonely Robot releases: “I always saw this as a trilogy, and it feels like the third part of the Lonely Robot master plan has reached a natural conclusion.” As with the two previous albums, there is a theme running across the songs: “On ‘Please Come Home’, the theme was about the idea that life on Earth didn’t originate from this planet, while for ‘The Big Dream’, I was really giving everyone the benefit of Zen musings according to John Mitchell. This time things are a little more down to earth. What I am doing is looking the millennial generation, and the fact that kids today are so tied to their phones and to technology. They really have no clue what is actually going on around them, and I find that worrying.”

13/11/2019: Bassist Thomas Thomsson Departs HFMC – Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion
A short message posted to the HFMC Facebook page states: “After a long time of reflection I have decided to leave HFMC. The reason for this is that I simply don’t enjoy it like I used to anymore. I’ve told myself that the day it’s no longer fun, I’ll stop. Also, I have other things in life that I want to prioritize. We started the band back in fall of 2008 so it’s been 11 years since then! I’m very happy with my contribution to HFMC, it’s been a fantastic journey but now it’s time for a new bass player to take over. There’s no hard feelings with the guys at all, we’re basically like a family, and it’s been a lot of fun and games through the years during tours and studio sessions – so it will be a happy divorce! It’s been 6 really fun gigs this fall following the Parallel life release, ending on top in Tallinn last Saturday! HFMC is and will always be my favorite band. I’m going from being a member to being a fan. I want HFMC to see this as a great opportunity to get new blood into the band and all the positive that can bring. I also want to take the opportunity to thank all the wonderful people I’ve met and got to know during this journey, all over the globe! A BIG THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! // Thomas Thomsson“

11/11/2019: New Group RUFFYUNZ Featuring Guest Artists Pat Travers & T.C. Tolliver Release Debut Album
RUFFYUNZ is a partnership between Randy Pratt (Cactus/The Lizards), Emmy winning engineer JZ Barrell, singer Ed Terry and a collection of drum and guitar masters. Guest artists include guitarist Pat Travers and drummer T.C. Tolliver from The Plasmatics. The songs are mainly about sex, animalistic sex, with a couple of “Dark Dread” numbers thrown in for bad measure.
Bassist Randy Pratt on bass, pedals and riffs and is best known for his work with The Lizards & Cactus. Singer Ed Terry has sung live with Stevie Wonder, Sister Sledge, John Oates, Sissy Houston, Slash and recorded with John Lennon, Keith Richards, Talking Heads, Simply Red, Little Steven, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, David Lee Roth, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner! JZ Barrell handles recording, engineering, mixing and arranging. Jesse Berlin is the band’s “go-to-first guitarist” usually and helps set a bedrock with embellishments.
The band’s concept is to use “known” drummers and guitarists as guests on their records. Once the guest guitarist has done his or her thing, Jesse trades solos with them.
Randy comments: “The songs are written bass/drums first, creating a lot of grooves and BIG RIFFS. From decades of reading Bass Player magazine, it seems most song writing bassists don’t write on bass…so I hope that gives us a bit of a unique vibe….plus my ever growing collection of uncommon effect pedals, not intended for bass, influence the way I play and the stuff I come up with. After the sessions, my partner JZ Barrell arranges the music into more defined song form. Usually, Ed Terry writes his vocals and lyrics, quickly, and records them at his home studio. Amazingly, it seems like we go with his first takes 90% of the time! Also, he writes most of his vocals to bass and drums, which is ‘different’, too, isn’t it? Josh and I produce the records. Then guitar is added to make the compositions come alive, searching for that sweet spot where James Brown and Black Sabbath collide.”

04/11/2019: Robin Armstrong Steps Down from Live Touring with Big Big Train
“And so the Big Big Train Grand Tour is all over, many months of rehearsal, playing with these amazingly talented musicians over 6 amazing shows with brilliant audiences cheering us on all over the UK… Unfortunately I had to make a very difficult decision. The preparation and rehearsal required to play at this level is insane and there just isn’t enough time going forward to fulfil all the requirements for BBT whilst forwarding my own music ambitions with Cosmograf. I’d love to be able to do it all but I have to earn a living too as well as indulging my passion in music. So, sadly the show at the Hackney Empire was the last time I’ll play for Big Big Train. I can’t tell you how sad I feel about that…I will readily admit I walked off the stage after taking our bows following ‘East Coast Racer’ and broke down in tears. As well as being incredible musicians these people are some of the loveliest you’ll ever meet. Being in their company and part of the extended family has been a pure joy…
But after a really difficult year for me personally, I have a ton of things I now need to do. There’s a new Cosmograf album in writing for release next year and 2020 will be the year that the band starts its tentative push into live gigs. I’m producing records for other people too and the first release for my new label should hit the world sometime in March.
Here’s a random image that will stay etched in the memory banks for a long while. For every show I set up my keys rig and then would be on the floor carefully placing my pedal setup and gaffering it all down so they didn’t slide about during use.
Huge thanks to everyone that’s supported me on the tour. Greg and David for trusting me with this amazing opportunity and the rest of the band for their patience, experience and fun, all the incredible crew that have become friends, and all the fans that have attended the shows.
I’m sure I will see you all again soon…. x”
