28/08/2019: Vanden Plas to Release Ninth Studio Album The Ghost Xperiment – Awakening

Vanden Plas have revealed the forthcoming release of The Ghost Xperiment – Awakening, part one of a two part concept project with the second album to be released in 2020.

Their ninth studio release, the album is based on a documented paranormal experiment. The main character in the story, created by frontman Andy Kuntz, is Gideon Grace, a man who has to fight constantly for his life against the relentless shadows of the ‘House of Rain’ as he wanders through France. Burdened with a heavy weight of sorrow following the agonising death of his beloved Ivy, Gideon’s pain is also the driving force in the war with his demons. He expands his knowledge with books that he discovers in the library of a German school of metaphysics, and it is here that he reads about secret teachers and parapsychological experiments, which become an important foundation from which he can fight against the creatures of darkness. However, when it comes to the first showdown, rather than finding peace, Gideon’s battle tears open a hole deep into the abyss of Hell….

The six tracks have a band-oriented arrangement and have again been made in collaboration with sound engineer Markus Teske at Bazement Studios.

25/08/2019: ESP Project return with new studio release

ESP Project (aka – ESP 2.0 & ESP) return in October with a new studio release, The Rising, featuring Damien Child. Tony Lowe’s ESP Project began as ESP in 2015 with the release of Invisible Din, which featured a number of guest musicians including violinist David Cross and David Jackson on saxes & flute. ESP 2.0 returned in 2018 with 22 Layers of Sunlight, a collaboration between Tony Lowe & Peter Coyle. The ESP Project returned earlier this year with a thirty minute mini album, three, and introduced the band’s new vocalist Damien Child. Following up the mini album is the band’s latest album The Rising which will be out 11th October 2019.

“Back with a sharp rise in temperature, the new ESP Project album, THE RISING, is upbeat and powerful. This tight four piece band roars through a landscape sculpted by the powerful and moving music of Tony Lowe, coupled with insightful and heartfelt lyrics of Damien Child with his versatile and poignant vocals. With guitar and keys by Tony Lowe, the passionate grooves of Pete Clark’s bass, underpinned by the intense energy of Greg Pringle’s drums, this album takes the listener to another level in the ESP catalogue.”

23/08/2019: Damian Wilson Announces New EP Thank You (The Holdsworth Sessions)

Damian Wilson has announced the release of his new EP Thank You (The Holdsworth Sessions) for the 11th October 2019, his 50th birthday. The EP features 5 songs arranged for piano, violin & cello and will be released as 10″ Vinyl + CD package, as well as digipak CD and on all major download and streaming platforms.

The EP is produced by Andrew Holdsworth and marks a return to his recording with just piano and string orchestra. The EP opens with the now bittersweet words ‘Thank you for giving this man a home’ – shortly after the song was recorded, Damian’s home, the boat this song is about, sunk on the way to his performance at Cropredy festival with Adam Wakeman. Other songs include Let Me Down Slowly, a song about his struggles through a break-up; God Be My Judge is an observation of the institutions in our societies and was previously recorded with Adam Wakeman; Until I’m With You is about a friend’s loss and longing; and Can You Hear Me is a song from Damian’s long lost friend Nick Woodbridge.

Andrew Holdsworth comments: “The recording process had perhaps more in common with a classical session than a traditional pop one. The timing and dynamics of these tracks are very expressive; there were no click tracks and no editing. I believe this EP contains some of the most magical music Damian and I have ever made together

Damian will be on tour from October 6th performing with different guests every night. Solo shows from 25 Oct.

Roine Stolt comments: “We have gone back to the joyful and playful style that made the band famous in the late 90’s. So here ‘more’ is always ‘more’! At time the lyrics have a bit of a serious concern about the state of our world, but overall the theme is full of joy and colour.

20/08/2019: The Ballad of Jethro Tull: First Official Illustrated History

Jethro Tull will be releasing their First Official Illustrated History in November. The Ballad of Jethro Tull is the widely anticipated official illustrated history of the band, due for publication by Rocket 88 Books.

The Grand Book will come in two different formats. Ian Anderson comments: “You’ll see there’s a choice of two editions of the book, one of which comes with a seven-inch vinyl record of me reading a specially written poem called ‘The Ballad of Jethro Tull,'” containing “musical backing from some old friends, too!

Two new recordings have been created especially for the project. The first, ‘The Ballad of Jethro Tull’ is a narrative poem written and read by Ian Anderson over a unique and original mix of classic Tull music, produced by Anderson himself – and named after the title of the book. The b-side is Ian reading Walter Scott’s 1808 poem, ‘Marmion’ with musical backing composed for the recording and played by John O’Hara (current Tull keyboard player) on a cathedral organ.

The new 7” single will be exclusive to the 500-copy limited run ‘Signature Edition’, each copy signed by Ian, and encased in a hand-made box containing two art prints specially commissioned for the book from artist Peter Klucik, who also created the cover design for the book. The ‘Classic Edition’ of the same book will have a higher print run, be available at a lower price point, and include a download code for the two new recordings.

In a specially recorded video for the website Anderson, who is overseeing the project and has contributed unseen images and materials from his personal archive, said that the book is ‘under construction’ and available to pre-order now, for shipping in November. Fans who pre-order now will be able to have their name printed in the finished book.

16/08/2019: Bruce Soord to Release New Solo Album All This Will Be Yours on Kscope in October

Bruce Soord, has revealed his second solo album All This Will Be Yours is scheduled for release through Kscope on 25th October 2019.

Combining influences from The Pineapple Thief as well as a desire to experiment with his own sound, the album is an acoustic and personal vision described by Soord as ‘observational’. It is inspired by the joy he felt at the birth of his third child and the contrast with the local deprivation experienced in his hometown.

Bruce comments: “Emotionally it was a pretty unique & eventful time, my wife was due to have our 3rd child at any time but she managed to come to see the final date of the TPT tour at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire, after the show that night we returned home to Yeovil and the next day our baby girl arrived.  So, we had this new life in our lives and it introduced a very different perspective on the world around me. I was totally inspired and started writing almost immediately.”

He continues “You’d like to think that something as simple as having a child shouldn’t impact on how you view things, but even the sight of a serene, sleeping baby in my studio while I was writing and recording, impacted on how I was inspired to write.  I was still observing. Taking walks in my hometown, witnessing the deprivation, the ‘incarcerated souls’ shuffling to my local drug den ‘number 158’, the screaming children on their commute to school. And the incessant sounds of sirens. I would take a mobile recorder out with me and some of these sounds made it onto the record. The kids, an old man walking along the street singing outside my house (‘Our Gravest Threat Apart’). And the sirens. The sirens appear throughout the record.”

The audio has been recorded as two continuous linear pieces to replicate the pleasure of listening to an album on vinyl and was mastered by fellow The Pineapple Thief member Steve Kitch.

Track Llist

  1. The Secrets I Know [02:24]
  2. Our Gravest Threat Apart [04:14]
  3. The Solitary Path Of A Convicted Man [03:44]
  4. All This Will Be Yours [06:04]
  5. Time Does Not Exist [03:33]
  6. One Misstep [04:00]
  7. You Hear The Voices [06:54]
  8. Cut The Flowers [04:35]
  9. One Day I Will Leave You [05:17]

All This Will Be Yours will be released on CD, LP, digitally and as a deluxe hardback book 3 disc edition featuring the album on CD, with an extra CD of acoustic re-workings and bonus studio tracks plus a DVD with All This Will Be Yours as a Hi-res 24/88 WAV stereo album, Hi res 24/88 WAV acoustic album and Hi res 24/88 WAV bonus studio tracks, all of which will also be available in 24/88 DTS 5.1 surround.

14/08/2019: Flying Colors Reveal Third Studio Album Third Degree for October Release

Flying Colors have revealed they will be releasing their third studio album Third Degree on 4th October via Music Theories Recordings.

Guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs, ex-Kansas), drummer Mike Portnoy (Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater, Transatlantic), keyboardist/vocalist Neal Morse (Transatlantic, ex-Spock’s Beard, and a solo artist in his own right), bassist Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, ex-Joe Satriani), and vocalist and songwriter Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev, The Sea Within) join forces again on the new release. Mike Portnoy comments: “There’s a lot of ear candy sprinkled throughout every song, and each one takes you on a little journey. As albums go, Third Degree is a complete piece that I don’t think ever overstays its welcome. I think it’s an enjoyable ride from start to finish.”

Steve Morse adds; “This one, dare I say it, explores new ground for the band. One of my favorites, ‘Geronimo,’ has an upbeat, jazzy, heavy, melodic feel all at once. We just do what makes us smile and sounds good, instead of wondering how critics or program directors will like it. It makes for the best music!” Casey McPherson concurs: “What Third Degree really proves to me is that we have our own sound. There are no egos in this band, and we all want the best parts to come out, which is such a joy for me to participate in. I think that really allows people’s uniqueness to show through.

The first sessions for the album took place at Steve Morse’s studio in Florida in December 2016 where seven songs were written. Two years later the band reconvened in December 2018 and three more tracks were added to the overall song list. The tenth track, “Waiting for the Sun,” will be made available in forthcoming special editions.

Track Listing

05/08/2019: Jo Quail Launches Her Own Label Adderstone Records and Release A Double Vinyl Re-issue of Exsolve

Credit: Simon Kallas

Composer and cellist Jo Quail has launched her own label AdderStone Records with the first release being the vinyl re-issue of Exsolve. Released on 4th October 2018, the double vinyl edition has been specially remastered for this format, and includes a brand new (fourth) track ‘Reya Pavan’.

Jo comments: “I set up AdderStone Records largely as a vehicle for my own releases, and ‘Exsolve’ as a special edition, double vinyl will be my first. The idea of my own label has been in discussion for a while but in the last 12 months my profile has grown and this seems like a great way to draw attention to my previous albums for a new audience. I love the metal festivals and bands I’ve been part of this year but my influences are wide and eclectic. I want to maintain my own identity and I hope drawing my work together under Adderstone Records can aid that. I intend to work backwards through my albums to make vinyl re-mastered editions of now-sold-out earlier releases, with Five Incantations coming out in early 2020, including a very special bonus track.”

For Jo it has always been important to be an independent, self-releasing artist. “I’m very happy to continue doing so until such time as I can’t carry everything to the post office every day (!) though a logical step in the future will be to look for a partner in distribution. It is an ambitious undertaking to set up AdderStone Records and put out these releases but at the same time it feels good and right to have a ‘home’ for my music.’ I have very talented people around me whose opinions I value and trust and who will always offer salient advice so I don’t feel I’m alone.

Over the past few years Jo Quail has been touring extensively across Europe and is also announcing a series of UK dates.

Track List:
1) Forge – Of Two Forms
2) Mandrel Cantus
3) Causleen’s Wheel
4) Reya Paven

UK Live Dates:
26th September, The Exchange, Bristol w/ Emma Ruth Rundle
27th September, Brudenell Social Club, Leeds w/ Emma Ruth Rundle
28th September, Beta, Nottingham w/ Emma Ruth Rundle
29th September, The Dome, London w/ Emma Ruth Rundle

03/08/2019: Cult of Luna Reveal Details For New Album A Dawn To Fear And Supporting Tour

Cult Of Luna will release their new album A Dawn to Fear on the 20th September 2019. The release will be the band’s first material under their sole name since 2013’s Vertikal 1&2.

A Dawn To Fear will comprise eight tracks running at seventy-nine minutes. Vocalist/guitarist and lead songwriter Johannes Persson comments: “Going into the process, we knew the album we wanted to make, an antithesis of what we’ve done before. For pretty much every album there’s been a very concrete theme. We’ve known from the start the kind of story we wanted to tell, and I didn’t want that to be the case. I’ve seen a lot of subtle changes and patterns in my own behavior and my own thinking the last couple of years, and I wanted this to be a completely spontaneous process. I just wanted to see what came out of me, and ‘A Dawn To Fear’ is the result of that.”

Persson believes the album has a more organic feel which has been achieved by using organs and other acoustic instruments in place of electronic keyboards. He also believes the release is heavier and more melancholic than previous recordings. Coming to a final track list was a problem with the finished recording running to the length of a double CD. There was some discussion among the band of cutting a track: “We sat down and looked at that song list and we couldn’t. It would make it easier for us and everyone involved to cut one song, making it no problem when it comes to LPs and CDs, but we just couldn’t see the album any other way. These songs are the songs that make sense. If we cut this song or that song, it would screw up the whole dynamic of the record.

Track List
1. The Silent Man
2. Lay Your Head to Rest
3. A Dawn to Fear
4. Nightwalkers
5. Lights on the Hill
6. We Feel the End
7. Inland Rain
8. The Fall

A Dawn to Fear will be available in the following formats:

– limited edition digibook 2CD
– deluxe edition artbook (2LP / 2CD 48-page hardcover artbook – beige / black marbled vinyl)
– 180g black vinyl (EU exclusive)

– clear / black circle vinyl (EU exclusive – limited to 200 copies)

02/08/2019: HRH Prog 9 Launches 9th Voyage at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London and O2 Academy, Sheffield

HRH Prog will take place Saturday 28th March 2020 and Sunday 29th March 2020 at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London and the O2 Academy in Sheffield.

The theme of HRH Prog 9 is ‘legends’. “HRH Prog IX is all about legends – which don’t come any bigger than Yes keyboard wizard – songwriter – producer – TV and radio presenter and author Rick Wakeman! With over 90 solo albums to his name, Rick continues to lead the way in British prog, having released his latest creation “Piano Odyssey” in 2018. We are humbly honoured to welcome such a genuine rock icon to HRH Prog IX and Rick is bringing his full band to the two venues.

Also headlining will be Dave Brock (Hawkwind) in an ‘Audience With’ format which will explore “a vault of music and stories we can only describe as “Brockworld”. From the busking and banter from the dawn of Hawkwind to playing some gems from his 6 solo albums, which have never really seen a live audience to moving into unchartered Hawkwind territory, this is a must for all true Hawkwind & Prog fans alike.

Other bands to feature include John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest, Dutch band Focus and from Lithuania, The Skys. German based The Spacelords, Nth Ascension, Franck Carducci (making his HRH Prog debut), Bram Stoker, The Room and Psychic Lemon complete the line up.

Tickets and accommodation packages are on sale now.

01/08/2019: Pure Reason Revolution Reunite to Release First New Studio Album In Nearly 10 Years

Jon Courtney & Chloë Alper have reunited Pure Reason Revolution played their first show in 8 years at the Midsummer Prog Festival in the Netherlands, performing their debut album The Dark Third in full. They comment: “The festival & crowd reaction was incredible. We were touched that people had travelled from Canada, Russia, Italy, Spain, UK & many more countries. The tracks are exciting as ever to play & it’s encouraging to see the material still has relevance & connects.

The band also reveal they are working on a new studio album for a 2020 release having signed to InsideOutMusic. Jon Courtney observes: “We’re currently working on material for the new album which returns to a more progressive sound & it’s nice to remind ourselves of the genesis of PRR” while Chloë adds: “it’s sounding spectacular.

Pure Reason Revolution originally formed in 2003, releasing their debut album The Dark Third in 2006 via Sony BMG. Albums Amor Vincit Omnia followed in 2009 & Hammer & Anvil in 2010. They disbanded in November 2011 following the tour supporting Hammer & Anvil. Since then, Jon Courtney started Bullet Height who released their debut album ‘No Atonement’ in 2017, while Chloë Alper began a new band called Tiny Giant as well as playing live with the likes of Charli XCX & James.
