24/09/18: Gösta Berlings Saga release second single The Shortcomings Of Efficiency

Last month (read HERE on TPA) Sweden’s Gösta Berlings Saga announced they would be releasing their fifth studio album, ET EX, on 12th October 2018. This will be the band’s first album through InsideOut Music and follows up their well received, self released Sersophane from 2016. To launch the pre-ordering campaign the band released the first single, Capercaillie Lammergeyer Cassowary & Repeat. InsideOut Music have now revealed the second single from the album The Shortcomings Of Efficiency

GBS commented about the track as follows: “During a period of time back in 2017 with no permanent guitar player, we had a series of productive and inspirational writing and recording sessions together with our friend Henrik Palm, known for his work in bands such as In Solitude, Ghost, Pig Eyes and most recently his awesome solo stuff under his own name. By adding Henrik’s 10,000W brain and genre defying guitar playing to the mix, the music was instantly led to darker places, creating an interesting synergy effect of energy and melodic outbursts.”

ET EX will be available in several formats: Digipak CD | Various Vinyl Packages [with bonus CD] | Digital – from 12th October 2018.

At the present time the band have not commented on any replacements but have confirmed their intention to continue: “…one thing is for certain – that Anne-Marie, Jonathan, and Gavin are all determined and committed to carry on making music together…”

21/09/18: The Moody Blues 50th anniversary edition of In Search Of The Lost Chord

The Moody Blues - 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition - In Search Of The Lost Chord

This November sees the release of the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of The Moody Blues’ classic third album, In Search Of The Lost Chord.

The deluxe format will be a 3CD/2DVD box set, featuring original and new stereo remixes of the album with bonus and unreleased tracks, including a never-before-heard mono version of Legend of a Mind. There are BBC Radio One John Peel ‘Top Gear’ and ‘Afternoon Pop Show’ sessions as well as mono mixes of the related Deram single A and B sides.

Released in July 1968, In Search of the Lost Chord is regarded by many to be the group’s masterpiece. A concept album, concerning itself with the spiritual and philosophical concerns of the psychedelic era, the group eschewed the use of an orchestra, opting instead for the mellotron (played by keyboardist Mike Pinder) and other exotic instrumentation, with which they experimented and played themselves, including flute, sitar, tabla and cello.

The 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of In Search Of The Lost Chord will be released through UMC on 2nd November 2018.

20/09/18: Iamthemorning premiere 5/4 from their new studio film Ocean Sounds

Following the success of their two studio, Belighted and Lighthouse, Iamthemorning are releasing a new studio film shot at and named after a remote recording studio on Giske, a Norwegian island. Released today and taken from Ocean Sounds is the track 5/4

Commenting on the 5/4 track Gleb Kolyadin and Marjana Semkina reveal: “We usually say that 5/4 is one of the two cheerful songs we have in our discography, the second one being about burning houses down! To me, it feels that when you grow up and live in Russia, specifically in St Petersburg, everything you do is soaked up in this very special type of melancholy, which makes it difficult to write happy music.” Vocalist and songwriter Marjana Semkina muses, “this song was always a very nice change from the ongoing drama of our live setlist which is usually filled with images of drowning women, dead flowers and people buried alive. Besides, it’s always very lovely to see the audience engaging and clapping along with us.”

Ocean Sounds will be released in several formats: 2CD+ Blu Ray set which includes the film and hi-res audio on Blu-ray | Vinyl LP | Digital

Iamthemorning will be playing at the Kscope 10th Anniversary show at London’s Union Chapel on Tuesday 2nd October. They will be appearing alongside Paul Draper and Anathema, plus Gleb Kolyadin will also perform a solo set.

20/09/18: Ed Wynne to release debut solo album in January 2019

Kscope announce the release of Shimmer Into Nature from Ozric Tentacles founder member Ed Wynne.

“The idea is to transport the listener to a place where the everyday ups and downs of the world dissipate, leaving the mind free to wander through a colourful, omnidirectional guitar and synth driven musical landscape for a while, landing eventually, hopefully freshly charged, with a smile and a calmer spirit.”

Shimmer into Nature was recorded and inspired by the different locations Ed Wynne travelled to over three years, from deep in the Colorado Mountains, to the coastlines of Cornwall and South Devon, before being completed on Scotland’s East Coast by the Firth of Forth.

Shimmer Into Nature will be released on 18th January 2019 and available in CD | Vinyl | Digital formats

20/09/18: Thumpermonkey premiere video for Veldt single

Veldt is the first single form the Thumpermonkey new studio album Make Me Young, etc, scheduled for release on 26th October 2018.

Speaking to Prog Michael Woodman reveals: “When I originally came up with Veldt, I’d been listening to the inscrutable nightmare soundscapes of noughties Scott Walker, particularly tracks where he would take something sweet and add uncomfortable drones – emotional resonances that were difficult to process in terms of words like ‘happy’ or ‘sad’, I wanted to do something like that. This is technically a love song.”

14/09/18: The Tangent launch trailer for Proxy

It was revealed last month, (details can be found HERE on TPA), that The Tangent would be releasing their tenth studio album Proxy, on the 16th November 2018, through InsideOut Music. Recorded during the band’s tour with Karmakanic in 2017/18, which saw them with more chances than normal to work together on the record – hotel writing sessions, van discussions, soundcheck ideas – all of which have allowed the band to make an album that is as organic as they have ever achieved since their formation 15 years ago.

Andy Tillison comments: “Our belief is that Progressive Rock music is still a valid and viable musical form in 2018 and will continue to be so. Our band has always sought to take on board things from the present and add them to that magical mix. We don’t claim to be offering the FUTURE. We just claim to be offering one set of possibilities. Ours. Now.”

The album will be released on 16th November 2018 and available in several formats: Limited CD Digipak | Vinyl LP + CD | Digital

“Chronometree told the story of Tom, a prog-rock obsessed teenager in the late seventies who heard alien voices communicating to him through his favorite albums. Tom has since grown up and is apparently none-the-wiser. “Chronomonaut” will tell the story of his recent mid-life crises.” Bassist and songwriter Steve Babb explains, “Apparently, the voices have returned and have been urging Tom to time-travel back to the glory days of the early prog scene.”

Guest appearances will include Discipline’s Matthew Parmenter and Chris Herin.

14/09/18: Roine Stolt’s The Flower King announce new studio

The album features a host of musicians including long-time collaborators Jones Reingold, Hans Froberg & Michael Stolt – as well as fellow The Sea Within member Marco Minnemann, Max Lorentz, Zach Kamins, Rob Townsend & Nad Sylvan.

Roine Stolt comments: “Unlike many later albums, where recordings have continued over months, this new album has been a fairly quick and effective affair – we started tracking in Holland at the beginning of July and mix was done by mid-August! The songs are written in a very ‘unorthodox’ way – some melodic content and some riffs are ideas that have been circulating for years – some may even be from before the first TFK album – they just hadn’t found a home in any of the bands/albums I did in the last 15 years yet.”

The album will be released on 23rd November 2018 and available in several formats: Limited CD Digipak | Limited Vinyl LP + CD | Digital

Roine Stolt’s The Flower King will be touring in South America during November, be fore heading over to Europe for a number of dates alongside Spock’s Beard during December.

12/09/18: Fish releases single from forthcoming EP

Fish releases Man With A Stick, taken from his forthcoming A Parlay With Angels EP, scheduled for 21st September 2018.

Fish comments on the track: “I was inspired to write this lyric after my father died in May 2016. He was a strong, proud, well-respected man who, like most of us, found growing old difficult. When he reached his mid 80’s he was becoming a shadow of his former self and in the last few months of his life he relied more and more on his trusty walking stick to get around.”

“After he left us I found it hard to look at any old men walking with a stick. I started to think about our relationships with sticks in our lives and how they go from being associated with fun and play to becoming something more sinister and symbols of power eventually supporting us as our strength weakens and old age takes its toll.”

The A Parlay With Angels EP features the Man With A Stick single, plus four live tracks Emperor’s Song, State Of Mind, Circle Line and Voyeur, recorded last Decembder at London’s Islington Assembly Hall. Completing the EP are Waverley Steps and Little Man What Now?, both of which will appear on forthcoming Weltschmerz final studio album.

10/09/18: Neal Morse to release new Rock Opera

Neal Morse has announced that he has signed Frontiers Music Srl for the release of his latest project Jesus Christ – The Exorcist, “a progressive rock opera”. The project includes performances from Ted Leonard, Eric Gillette, Nick D’Virgilio, Randy George, Bill Hubauer, Matt Smith and more…

Neal explains: “Sometimes providence comes with a whisper; sometimes it comes with an unexpected phone call.”

“A friend of mine who works in the music business called me from New York one day in 2008 and said, ‘Hey, man, a friend and I were listening to ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ last night and were saying, ‘Man, somebody ought to do a new rock opera based on the Jesus story.’ I told my friend, ‘I know the guy!’ He went on to tell me I ought to write an epic prog piece based on the gospels. With a New York accent, he said, ‘Ya gotta do it!’ I laughed and said, ‘Well, I’m busy right now, but I’ll think about it.’ Over the next couple of months, I began to feel that ‘yes’ inside and spent a few months writing the first draft. The strong sense that I was on to something continued to grow and the people that sang on the original version were really into it. However, my friend from New York (Michael Caplan) shopped it around and a lot of people loved it, but it never found a home…. until NOW! Again, the phone rang and it was Michael. He said, ‘You’re not gonna believe this, but I’ve got a company interested in the musical!’ I replied, ‘That’s great, ’cause I am in the middle of a rewrite as we are putting it on at [Morse]Fest 2018 in a few months.’ Very timely! The company is called Frontiers Music Srl and after some communication, we struck a deal! Cool! So, here we are…ready to record and release this collection of songs and themes that is very dear to my heart and I believe tells the greatest story ever told in a powerful, new way.”

Although no official release date has been announced, Jesus Christ – The Exorcist will be released in 2019, as a double album set featuring about two hours of music.

04/09/18: Phideaux reveals We Only Have Eyes For You video

We Only Have Eyes For You is taken from Infernal, which will be officially released this weekend – 9th September 2018.

Speaking to Prog Phideaux comments: “I thought We Only Have Eyes For You would be a good vehicle for visual metaphor and that we could interpret and subvert/obvert the lyrics. The song is a bit of a call to action, and feeds into the 1984 conspiracy theory culture of our time. The film’s madcap imagery serves as a good counterbalance. I’m always looking for the irony and humour within the serious.”

“The sparse instrumentation is extended with the use of pedals and amplification that blend with the acoustic instruments to offer a unique, alien palette from which to draw. A stream-of-consciousness approach gives the album’s lyrics a feeling of dreamlike imagery and elusive associations.”

The Opposite will be released in several formats: CD | Vinyl LP | Digital – and available directly from the band at this year’s ProgDay in North Carolina (01-02/09/2018) and during their European dates in France, Belgium and Germany – all during September.

01/09/18: Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly announce new studio album in November

Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly have announced their brand new studio album, Friendship, will be released on 9th November 2018. This follows last year’s On Her Journey To The Sun, as well as 2018’s retrospective 5CD collection Rumbling Box.

Rikard comments: “The idea for ‘Friendship’ came to me because of an old photo of me as a child. I found this old photo at my parents’ house, depicting me standing on top of this really tall treehouse in a glade near our house. Although I of course remembered it as being really high up in the tree tops as a child, this picture proved that it really was! As I reminisced about the treehouse I started thinking about my childhood friends with whom I built it. We were the best of friends and we spent so much time together in this little village where I used to live. This of course made me think about all the friends I used to have, these relationships where you hung out all the time, went through childhood together, grew up and knew everything about each other and then all of a sudden, for some reason, disappeared from each other’s lives. This phenomenon of falling out with someone is still a mystery to me, but I’ve learned to accept it, much like the separation of death it’s just a part of life and the nature of our course of life, I guess. So this is a collection of songs about and for all of my friends, dead or alive, past and present. I chose to base the stories around the treehouse in the glade, not because all of my memories are from there, but rather that it’s the place that made me think back on all of this.”

The album will be available in several formats: Limited CD Digipak | Gatefold 2LP + CD | Digital
