31/08/18: The Tangent announce new studio album

The Tangent will release Proxy, their 10th and latest studio offering on 16th November 2018, via InsideOut Music.

“Recorded during the band’s tour with Karmakanic in 2017/18, which saw them with more chances than normal to work together on the record – hotel writing sessions, van discussions, soundcheck ideas – all of which have allowed the band to make an album that is as organic as they have achieved since their formation 15 years ago.”

Andy Tillison comments: “Our belief is that Progressive Rock music is still a valid and viable musical form in 2018 and will continue to be so. Our band has always sought to take on board things from the present and add them to that magical mix. We don’t claim to be offering the FUTURE. We just claim to be offering one set of possibilities. Ours. Now.”

‘Proxy’ is a riot of juxtaposing styles, presented in a really direct manner and despite being firmly rooted in the stylistic traits of the Progressive Rock Genre takes some unexpected turnoffs and a major swerve. The albums kicks off with a trademark Tangent prog fantasia based around growling Hammonds, shrieking Synths, whirling guitars and sharp percussive bass – influences of ELP, Egg, Hatfield & the North, Caravan and Camel proudly worn on their sleeves. This 16-minute title track eventually becomes a protest song about the continuing wars that share their name with the song.

But this album features no overall concept. The second track is a sun-drenched Mediterranean fusion instrumental, more Chick Corea than Che Guevara. And the third track is referred to by the band as an attempt to find the missing link between Porcupine Tree and Jamiroquai. By the time we reach the centrepiece epic track ‘The Adulthood Lie’, the rulebook has been left behind and the band are trying to fix the car with whatever is at hand.

29/08/18: New Alan Parsons studio album tentatively scheduled for early 2019

Frontiers Music Srl announce that Alan Parsons has signed with the label and is currently working on a new studio album and scheduled for release in the spring of 2019. An official date is to be confirmed

“The writing and recording sessions are going incredibly well,” says Alan. “The album already has a working title, which is THE SECRET, and it will include musical and lyrical themes that are very close to my heart and my own interests and passions. I do not really want to reveal a lot about it, except that for the moment everything that surrounds THE SECRET is going to be just that….a secret!”

“The overall musical approach of the album is expected to be in keeping with the symphonic rock that Alan explored on his earlier solo records and the “Project” albums. But, of course, there will be new twists and turns and robust new creative inspiration behind the album. Some special guests will be on the album, but those will be revealed later….again, in keeping with the working title of the album, “The Secret”.”

25/08/18: Gösta Berlings Saga launch first single from ET EX

Earlier this month Sweden’s Gösta Berlings Saga announced they would be releasing their fifth studio album, ET EX, on 12th October 2018. This will be the band’s first album through InsideOut Music and follows up their well received, self released Sersophane from 2016. To launch the pre-ordering campaign the band have released the first single, Capercaillie Lammergeyer Cassowary & Repeat

Speaking of the single the band comment: “To us, ‘CLC&R‘ is a logical progression in the continuous chiseling of the sound that is Gösta Berlings Saga – or at least parts of it. While the song itself is very minimalistic and repetitive, we didn’t spare any expenses on this one instrumentation-wise to achieve a sense of contrast – for instance by inviting Lars Åhlund from Soen on saxophone. Basically, it’s a simple and powerful tune with a complex soundscape!”

24/08/18: Nosound release new single and video for Shelter

European art-rockers Nosound have shared Shelter, the second single taken from their upcoming album Allow Yourself, scheduled for 21st September 2018 via Kscope.

The footage was personally shot by Giancarlo, “I had a very specific view in mind, I had the idea of a woman coming from the sea and meeting another woman in this field, without suggesting anything specific about the past of the two characters, or the nature of their meeting or relationship. Also, to me, without wanting to make a political statement, I needed to subtly make reference to a subject very dear to my home country, Italy, with the heart-breaking situation of migrants coming from the sea and some terrible politicians and diffused racism across the population.”

In July Nosound shared the first single to be released Don’t You Dare – details can be found in last month’s TPA News. Giancarlo Erra described the new material as “stripping back of what has come before, and its inspirations are in a different field altogether…”

24/08/18: Vennart stream their new single Spider Bones

Vennart reveals the second track taken from their forthcoming album To Cure A Blizzard Upon A Plastic Sea, scheduled for release on 14th September 2018. Vennart revealed Sentientia earlier this month and today sees the release of Spider Bones

Mike Vennart says: “Spider Bones is one of the most euphoric tunes I’ve ever done. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything so obviously ‘funky’ which is definitely dangerous territory for me.

“The drums are set to ‘Madchester’ while the rest of the band rocks the fuck out, albeit in the usual woozy, wonky kind of way. The bassline was an absolute bitch to play so I asked Steve Harris from Iron Maiden but he was too busy. Yes, really.”

Vennart have a series of UK dates during November…

Sunshine Dust marks the band’s first album with Eric Emery on lead vocals: “It encapsulates everything that defines our sound, the heart-on-sleeve emotion, drenching ambiance… and big riffs. It’s possibly vocalist Eric Emery’s finest moment on the record.”

“‘Sunshine Dust’ is the personal favorite for us,” says Dhar of the track. “It was written at the end of the Guiding Lights sessions and has gone through a lot of metamorphoses before arriving at its current form, with Kim from Dead Letter Circus co-writing a lot of the melodies. It encapsulates everything that defines our sound, the heart-on-sleeve emotion, drenching ambiance, and big riffs. It’s possibly Eric’s finest moment on the record.”

Anthony would later reflect “I’d become a stranger to the world of guitars and all my lovely stringed instruments would often look at me with mournful reproach! There was a gap in my keyboard-based TV work and so I launched myself on the neglected fretted fraternity, improvising for 2 – 3 hours on each in a state of great excitement but chronic rustiness”.”

You can find a full track listing for the new edition of Field Day HERE at Cherry Red Records.

The 3 disc digipack edition Field Day, which includes a booklet with new essay by Jonathan Dann and comments from Anthony Phillips is scheduled for release 26th October 2018.

Unexpectedly we’ve also managed to put together a surround mix of the live material – we’re just hoping we can fit it all on the 3rd disc…”

The band plan to play Ever, in its entirety, during their two December Christmas shows at London’s Islington Assembly Hall and Zoetermeer’s De Boerderij.

13/08/18: Glass Hammer announce new concept album Chronomonaut

“Chronometree” told the story of Tom, a prog-rock obsessed teenager in the late seventies who heard alien voices communicating to him through his favorite albums. Tom has since grown up and is apparently none-the-wiser. “Chronomonaut” will tell the story of his recent mid-life crises. Bassist and songwriter Steve Babb explains, “Apparently, the voices have returned and have been urging Tom to time-travel back to the glory days of the early prog scene.”

“To lend credibility to the Chronomonaut story, the character of Tom began posting his own music and theories on time travel to YouTube and at least one well-known progressive rock forum ( several months ago using the name “The Elf King”. Glass Hammer has also been releasing “found footage” video of Tom, supposedly from 1983, which documents his time travel experiments as well as the failure of his own prog band to secure a record deal.” Continue reading HERE

10/08/18: The Pineapple Thief share new video for their second single

The Pineapple Thief have launched their latest video Try As I Might, the second single from their forthcoming new studio album Dissolution, scheduled for release at the end of this month via Kscope.

Bruce Soord explains: “broadly speaking the title reflects the disintegration of relationships and the undoing of our social fabric. In a time when we are supposed to be bound closer together than ever, I have never felt so apart from the world. We are living through a revolution and right now I am not sure it’s a good one. Lyrically this is the most vivid I have been.

”’Far Below’ began life as a bit of a jam session between myself and Gavin. Gavin had this distinctive 6/8 rhythm going and it didn’t take long for me to find the melodies. And so, a song was born. Is it my favourite track from the album? Impossible to judge as the album covers so much ground. But it does showcase what the four of us want The Pineapple Thief to be about and I for one can’t wait to play this one live.”

Previously The Pineapple Thief announced they would be taking Dissolution on the road starting in September 2018 and running into 2019. A full list of dates can be found HERE an the band’s Tour Page.

04/08/18: Perilous Journey – Gordon Giltrap Biography to be released in October

Gordon Giltrap reveals that his biography Perilous Journey will be released on 5th October 2018 through Wymer Publishing. Written by Rock Society editor Steve Pilkington, over a three year period and with a foreword Del Newman.

“Guitarist Gordon Giltrap is the epitome of what is often referred to as a ‘musician’s musician’, in that the respect in which he is held by his peers speaks volumes for his ability and influence. Beginning his career as a solo acoustic guitarist and vocalist in the late 1960s, it was 1976 before the name Gordon Giltrap came into the public eye with the release of his landmark album Visionary, and album and single chart success followed over the next few years with the albums Perilous Journey and Fear Of The Dark, as he formed The Gordon Giltrap Band to perform these progressive rock-tinged works in the live environment. By now a wholly instrumental performer, his greatest commercial success came with his signature piece Heartsong, which followed up its chart success by being picked up by the BBC for use as the theme tune to their long-running Holiday programme.

Following this, Gordon retreated largely to the acoustic realm with his next few albums, and retained a devoted hard-core following, as well as the aforementioned admiration of some of the biggest names in modern guitar music. Coming from the humblest of childhoods in South East London, Gordon’s life in and out of the spotlight has proved to be a rollercoaster of highs and lows and one which ultimately transcends even his musical achievements as a story of human triumph and tragedy.”

The first 100 ordered copies will be signed by Gordon and pre-ordering is available HERE.

02/08/18: All Them Witches share new track from forthcoming studio album

Nashville experimental psych-rockers All Them Witches have announced the release of their fifth studio album ATW, scheduled for 28th September 2018 on New West Records. The band have issued the first track taken from the album – Fishbelly 86 Onions

ATW marks a shift in the overall production from the preceding Sleeping Through The War album, and also marks the introduction of keyboard player Jonathan Draper.

“It’s the band confirming and continuing to develop their approach, in the devil’s boogie of “Fishbelly 86 Onions,” the organ-laced groove and masterful flow of “Half-Tongue,” the build of “HJTC” and the fluid jam in closer “Rob’s Dream.” You can hear it in the mellow patience of that last track, never lost but always wandering, and in “1st vs. 2nd,” where they turn from a frenetic shake to some purposefully metal-ish riffing while still holding onto gut-tightening tension.”

Pre-ordering is available via Bandcamp

The band have also announced a US tour kicking off at the Seven Sense Festival (Louisville) in October and running through till the end of November. All dates can be found HERE
