26/06/18: Kingcrow to release new studio album in September

Italian progressive metal/rock sextet Kingcrow will release their latest studio album, The Persistence, on 7th September 2018, via Sensory Records. This will coincide with the band’s European tour supporting Pain Of Salvation. Details can be found on the PoS Tour Page | Kingcrow website.

“KINGCROW’s upcoming third album for Sensory Records, The Persistence closes a three-year gap since their acclaimed Eidos album. With each release, they take a step further away from their original roots and is regarded today as one of the most exciting bands that Italy has to offer.”

Diego Cafolla comments: “With the last record, Eidos, we finished what we call the ‘life trilogy’ which included Phlegethon, In Crescendo, and Eidos, and when we started talking about the new chapter everyone agreed we needed somehow to step a bit outside of our comfort zone and refresh our sound…”

The Persistence will be released on CD, 2xLP, and digital formats. The vinyl version features three bonus tracks recorded at ProgPower USA, newly mastered by Alan Douches, on the D-side.

26/06/18: Frontiers premiere Robert Berry’s Powerful Man featuring Keith Emerson

As reported ealier this month Robert Berry‘s 3.2 would be releasing The Rules Have Changed on 10th August 2018, via Frontiers Music. The initial work began for the album with Keith Emerson prior to his untimely death in 2016. Berry recently decided to record the album using the material that they had created as a fitting tribute to Keith Emerson. Below you will find the video for the first track to be released – Somebody’s Watching. Today Frontiers Music have revealed the track Powerful Man

Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock, Robert Berry comments: “The song is a tribute to fathers and the inspiration came from seeing how many rockers have produced equally talented offspring over the years.”

“In my life, I have played with many very famous musicians,” he says. “Each one has had a son that is affected by that fame. They see a powerful man up in that stage. But all also had a great dad off of that stage. Sammy Hagar’s son Aaron, Steve Howe’s son Dylan, Greg Kihn’s son Ry and Keith Emerson’s son Aaron. They were all raised by loving, powerful dads. And now in Keith’s family, his grandson is following in his footsteps. Ethan Emerson may be as good as his granddad someday. Now that was a powerful man. They are all the inspiration for the song ‘Powerful Man.'”

22/06/18: Aisles premiere last video of Live Series and announce EP

Aisles premiere the last video of their “Live from Estudio del Sur” sessions, for the song Club Hawaii, which was originally released on the album Hawaii (2016). The session started with the video for Clouds Motion, and it continued with Shallow and Daft, Still Alive, and Club Hawaii. All of these songs will be included on their new EP, Live from Estudio del Sur which will be released on 6th July 2018.

Guitarist German Vergara comments: “We knew that ‘Club Hawaii’ could not be left out of this live series. It’s a very collective effort in which we incorporated elements from electronic and Latin music, pop, jazz, and even metal, so as to transport the listener to the future in which the concept of the album takes place. We used more distortion, sounded heavier than usual and Sebastián recites a heart wrenching poem in the darkest section of the song. Personally it’s my favorite on the ‘Hawaii’ album and I’m very proud of my lyrics. When playing it live I get goosebumps every time we reach the part ‘Turn my soul into flesh and soil and blood and waves…’”

21/06/18: Mogwai announce the release of KIN

Today, Mogwai have officially announced the release of KIN: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on 31st August 2018 via Rock Action. The album is composed of tracks recorded by the band for the score of the forthcoming sci-fi/crime drama.

Of the soundtrack, Stuart Braithwaite says: “We were really excited to be asked to record the original score for Jonathan and Josh Baker’s debut movie KIN. It was amazing to do a project that was so different to anything we’ve done before and see how our music fits in a totally different environment to how it’s been used before. The music in the film is some of my favourite Mogwai has ever made and we can’t wait for people to hear it.”

Jarrod Gosling’s Regal Worm announce the release of their third album, Pig Views, on 13th July 2018. “Featuring Jarrod’s trademark use of vintage synths, organs and Mellotron to great effect and largely self-played, this beautifully produced album sees the RW sound move to a more song based format but still allowing space for contemporaneous flights of fancy and some seriously heavy psychedelic grooves.”

Pig Views is the third in a loose trilogy of albums that started to great acclaim with 2013’s Use and Ornament, quickly followed by the companion piece 2014’s Neither Use Nor Ornament.

Pig Views is scheduled for release via Uranium Club/Quatermass on 13th July 2018. All formats and will be available direct from the Uranium Club Bandcamp and from Burning Shed.

17/06/18: New release from David Kollar and Arve Henriksen in July

Illusion of a Separate World is the meeting between innovative Slovakian guitarist, film music composer and sound designer David Kollar (Steven Wilson, Pat Mastelotto, Fennesz, Marco Minnemann, Eivind Aarset) and Norwegian trumpet maestro Arve Henriksen. Shimmering soundscapes and haunting melodies mixed with soundtrack music, ethnic influences, electronic explorations, jazz hybrids, and post-rock riffs are at the core of this meeting.

David Kollar and Arve Henriksen started their collaboration after they met in 2017 and played just twice before the recording. “I played last year at the Spectaculare festival in Prague,” said David “I had a solo performance and after me there was Arve playing with Christian Fennesz. At the end of the festival, we shared our contact details. In few months, we met again on the stage at Hevhetia festival in Slovakia.” The performance was such a bonding experience that the two chose to record an album together.

Intimate, intense, passionate and subtle, Illusion of a Separate World is two artists showing how easy is for them to create music that is immediate and tremendously complex, haunting and gorgeous at same time.

16/06/18: Robert Fripp’s New York residency soundscapes available

Robert Fripp’s complete three-day soundscapes residency in New York from November 2000 is now available to buy as a bundle as well as individual concerts. The performances began just four days after King Crimson had completed its final North American tour for the year.

The concerts ran from 28th – 30th November and included a lunchtime and evening performances were held in the atrium of New York’s World Financial Centre, described here by Downtown Express…

“The large, open Winter Garden provided a wondrous setting, filled with palm trees as well as speakers situated under many of the seats for a true surround-sound experience. (Fripp himself called this arrangement “quietly spectacular.”) The music itself was anything but sedate as he improvised, creating an alternately eerie, vibrant, calming atmosphere. Technology has allowed him to achieve an even more dynamic sound than his looping technique.”

15/06/18: Godsticks release acoustic version of We Are Leaving

Mindful that their fourth studio album Faced With Rage, released in October 2017, did not have an acoustic track – Godsticks have now peeled back We Are Leaving

Darran Charles comments: “It was pointed out to us recently that Faced with Rage was the only Godsticks album that didn’t feature an acoustic guitar track. So we have stripped a song down to its bare bones and this is the result. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording it. The video (filmed and edited by Chris Vinnicombe) can be viewed above.”

The band will be performing at this year’s Stone Free Festival, which takes place this weekend – and they will also be undertaking a short series of UK dates in October.

14/06/18: 41POINT9 premiere Confessions At Midnight single/video

41POINT9 premiere the first single/video from the band’s forthcoming album Mr. Astute Trousers, scheduled for release on 21st September 2018. Confessions At Midnight is the risqué new video that has been accepted into a service providing music to over 2500 strip clubs in the US making the single the first ever Prog Rock single and video to be accepted into this type of market.”

The video tells the story of a burlesque dancer who falls in love with her Emcee… Bassist Bob Madsen comments: “What started as an inside joke has actually become a pretty cool lil’ tune. One evening the band was wondering why you never hear Prog in a Strip Club? That just seemed unfair. So 41POINT9 set out to rise to the challenge and correct this tragic wrong. Hence, ‘Confessions At Midnight’ was born.”

The band’s Bob Masden and Brian Cline have produced a series of concept videos, to promote album, which will be released during the summer and ahead of the album’s release on 21st September 2018.

09/12/18: Islington Assembly Hall, London [UK]

Spock’s Beard comment: “Spock’s Beard is excited to announce an upcoming Winter tour! It will be a co-bill with Roine Stolt’s THE FLOWER KING’s revisited band, so each show promises to be a great evening of music. We’ve been getting a lot of questions about who will be playing drums on this tour, so at this time let me introduce our new touring drummer, Mr. Mike Thorne, from SAGA! We are really excited to have him on board and are looking forward to seeing you on tour.”

Roine Stolt adds: “Asked to put together a band to go on the road, celebrate our label Inside Out’s 25 year anniversary – I was thinking of the ‘treasure’ that is the music I wrote for The Flower Kings during that same period. I felt compelled to bring out this music for yet another round – and in the process bring in some old friends and some new.

The music is universal – some songs timeless – and by November I hope to have an exciting set-list – to not only celebrate my 1st album and the origin of all things “The Flower King” – but to cover the rest of TFK’s history – and eventually a new tune & a few new faces. Tune up the engine – Time to prog!”

13/06/18: The Pineapple Thief reveal more details on new album and share first single

The Pineapple Thief have revealed the first single, Far Below, taken from their forthcoming studio album Dissolution which will be released on 31st August 2018 via Kscope.

Bruce Soord explains the song’s evolution “’Far Below’ began life as a bit of a jam session between myself and Gavin. Gavin had this distinctive 6/8 rhythm going and it didn’t take long for me to find the melodies. And so, a song was born. Is it my favourite track from the album? Impossible to judge as the album covers so much ground. But it does showcase what the four of us want The Pineapple Thief to be about and I for one can’t wait to play this one live.”

12/06/18: Jon Hiseman ~ RIP

Drum legend, composer, arranger, recording engineer, record producer and music publisher Jon Hiseman passed away in the early hours of this morning 12th June 2018… Jon had been diagnosed with brain tumor last month.

Recently Jon formed a new trio with long time friend Clem Clempson and Mark Clarke. Under the name of JCM the band recorded Heroes in late 2017 and the band had recently embarked on some UK tour dates.

Clem Clempson said of his friend: “It is with great sadness and a feeling of utter disbelief that I must share the awful news that my dear friend and colleague of almost 50 years, the great Jon Hiseman, passed away early this morning after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Hard to believe that this could come to pass just a few weeks after we were playing together onstage with JCM. For all who worked with him he was a constant guiding light, inspirational and indefatigable, a true leader who will be greatly missed by his many colleagues and legions of fans. Thanks for everything Jon, RIP.”

Most noted for his work with Colosseum & Colosseum II, however this would merely scratch the surface. Perhaps we should let the music speak…

Our condolences to his family and close friends.

Jon Hiseman ~ RIP

In last months’ TPA News it was revealed that Strangefish were to release a new studio album in June. Now with less than a week until the launch of The Spotlight Effect, the band offer a taster video – Up To You.

“‘The Spotlight Effect’ focuses on the media driven world we find ourselves in today, where every move we make is analysed then picked to pieces. There’s nothing sacred anymore; all things are considered fair game for an ‘entertain-me’ hungry audience. This perfectly summed up the general mood of all the songs, with aspects of the human condition as the overriding theme.”

The Spotlight Effect will be on CD and digital media on 18th June 2018.

08/06/18: The Sea Within launch lyric video for second track of their debut album

The Sea Within launch the lyric video for Goodbye, the second single taken from their eponymous debut album, which will be released 22nd June 2018. For Goodbye, Flying Colors’ Casey McPherson is the featured vocalist…

Roine Stolt comments: “One of the great groovy ‘collaborative’ tracks on our album. We go down the ‘funk’ route here – but with strong melody hooks. Originally presented by Jonas Reingold, but all the band helped in writing, shaping & bringing this song to life in the London studio. Casey McPherson added his soulful voice to this ‘breakup drama’ – a bit of ‘real life story’ in a music genre that seldom dwells in reality. It promises to be a great live track.”

The previously single clip, Ashes of Dawn, appeared in last month’s TPA News.

Theo Travis & Robert Fripp have a new 3CD set released in July. Between The Silence consists of three complete concerts recorded between 2009 and 2010 with only two tracks previously available.

The concerts ran from 28th – 30th November and included a lunchtime and evening performances were held in the atrium of New York’s World Financial Centre, described here by Downtown Express…

“As with so much music where improvisation is central, a core element, hearing the performances as heard on the respective nights allows the listener to enter more fully into the spirit in which the music originated, while the differences in venues, acoustics & even size of audience impacts upon the manner in which the duo approaches each concert.

Most of the music featured is new to CD with only two tracks having appeared in different/edited form on the album Follow.

As ever the music produced by Travis & Fripp remains wonderfully difficult to neatly categorise – sometimes quiet, but never to the extent that it could be described as ‘ambient’ – improvisational, but not in such a manner as to call it ‘jazz’ – using electronics, but not resulting in music that could be described as ‘electronica’. It is, nonetheless, music that has touched a great many people – both in concert & as presented on discs – with this release marking the duo’s fifth recorded release.”

It’s just a chance for everyone to let their hair down while simultaneously showcasing one of our shorter, yet more complicated tunes to play.”

L-1VE will be released as a 2CD/2DVD Digipak package & as digital download. The DVD will include four bonus tracks filmed at ProgPower USA 2016, as well as all of the official videos from the Affinity album. The main show and the bonus material on the DVD are also mixed in 5.1 surround sound.

Southampton based alt/prog rock duo BirdPen will release their new studio album, There’s Something Wrong With Everything, in the early autumn. It is preceded by a single, “This Is Your Life, which comments on our confused, junk guzzling, information overloading, fake news spreading, fear mongering and brainwashed modern age. Driven by a motorik groove with a Pink Floyd-ish synth layer, heavy fuzz guitar precedes a chorus from which emanates a ranting message driven vocal: “This is your life, static screens, faded dreams oh can’t you see. This is your life, the broadcast lies, open your eyes you will see.”

“‘There’s Something Wrong With Everything’ melds heavy/psychedelic guitars, rolling basslines, Krautrock drums and old school electronics to create a doom groove ambience with Dave Pen’s lead vocal sitting atop, while musically the duo draw inspiration from acts such as Deerhunter, Hookworms, Suuns, The Beta Band, Pink Floyd and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.”

This Is Your Life is written, recorded and produced by the BirdPen duo of Mike Bird and Dave Pen. The song was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios in London. Available to pre-order via Pledge Music

01/06/18: The Wetton/Downes Icon albums to be re-released

Geoffrey Downes and the John Wetton (estate) announce the re-release of the iCon trilogy of albums, newly re-mastered and with bonus tracks and all enclosed in six panel Digi-packs.

The re-releases have been personally overseen by Geoff Downes and are intended to be a return to the marketplace of individual albums for fans who may wish to purchase a definitive edition.

Of his song-writing relationship and the formation of iCon, Geoff Downes says, “Throughout my entire career, there is no doubt in my mind, that some of my proudest achievements have been the songs that I wrote with the late John Wetton. Not only were we great friends, but also blood brothers in the song-writing department. His magic rubbed off on me immensely, and outside of the hugely successful Asia template, we decided to step out together with our Icon project. It was a ‘bromance’ made in heaven, because here we had the chance to expand our innermost thoughts and variety of influences, without interference. It was effectively ‘us’. We also had the luxury of working with some of the finest musicians in the world who were willing participants in the project.”

For fans of the whole iCon legacy, a box set is being planned out featuring these albums and all the other recordings of the iCon duo, including previously unreleased material.
