French atmospheric progressive rockers Weend’ô, who combine “an intriguing amalgam that moved from delicate to much more muscular”, announce the release of Time of Awakening, to be released through UK label Sonicbond on 26th January 2018.

“Time of Awakening is a call to humanity to keep faith and hope despite the appalling events currently afflicting the world . The band believe that we are entering a new period in our evolution, and that we are experiencing frequencies that are creating a new paradigm even though the events of 2017 – like devastating earthquakes – have been disastrous for individual communities. They discuss this in the hymn “Elea” and from a more personal point of view in the song “Angel Dust”. All is one – both the visible and invisible worlds. Nothing can stop the true evolution…”

18/12/17: Resonate 2018 have cancelled of next year’s festival

Due to scheduling issues and clashes with other concerts Mike Morton has taken the bold step to cancel day two of Resonate 2018, which takes place at the O2 Islington Academy in September 2018.

The statement reads: “Ladies and Gentlemen. I have a fairly important announcement to make: Next year’s RESONATE at O2 Islington Academy will now be a one day event, not a full weekend. Saturday 8th September will go ahead, but we have decided to cancel the second day, Sunday 9th September. There were several reasons, but here are the main ones:

– Sunday headliners Threshold had to withdraw due to scheduling issues. The lack of a big name left us more than a little exposed…

– Camel announced that they would be playing on the same day. As you might imagine, with such prestigious competition our passionately-prog audience would have been seriously conflicted and sales would have been significantly hit. We decided that the risk was just too great.”

The line-up for the Saturday evening can be found on the TPA UK Festival Guide and visit the TPA Gig Guide this concert and more from across the prog spectrum…

18/12/17: Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly to release 5 disc boxset

The latter “is a previously unreleased album that consists of ten tracks, all of them with Swedish lyrics. It’s quite a pop oriented album that we spent a lot of time recording and we’re really proud of it, just like all the others of course.”

“Rikard Sjöblom is perhaps best known as the multi-instrumentalist frontman of Beardfish, who established themselves as one of the most consistently brilliant modern-day progressive rock bands over the course of eight studio albums. In recent years, he has also become known for his work with English progressive collective Big Big Train, playing live with them as well as performing on their 2016 album ‘Folklore’ & 2017 release ‘Grimspound’.”

12/12/17: Tony Banks to release new orchestral album

Tony Banks will launch a new orchestral album Five, via BMG Records on 2nd February 2018. The release will be his third full-length orchestral release – and 5 will be available in three physical formats: CD, Vinyl LP (with signed sheet music folio) and CD & Vinyl LP (with signed sheet music folio).

‘5’ is a collection of five compositions written by Tony Banks and was produced by long-time collaborator Nick Davis. Nick Ingman, renowned orchestrator and conductor, agreed to be involved in the project immediately after hearing the demos played to him personally by Banks. Ingman has worked with a plethora of artists and musicians from David Bowie and Oasis to the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The recording was built up over various sessions, the first in London’s Angel Studios where solos and percussion were recorded before a transfer to Prague for a week where concentrated sets of three sessions a day with the orchestra and choir. Recording section by section is a more rock/pop method and seen as unorthodox for an orchestral album, but this method allowed Banks, who also played all of the piano parts*, to use his vast musical experience and give himself greater creative control.

11/12/17: Thumpermonkey reveal Woadscrivened animated video

Taken from their well received Electricity EP released in October this year comes the animated video for the track Woadscrivened. You can read TPA’s review of Electricity HERE.

Guitarist and vocalist Woodman tells Prog: “Ben wrote the music for this one; I had the opportunity to react to it as a complete piece – rather than writing lyrics and vocal melodies while the music was still being drafted.”

“Something in the music made me start to reflect on how somebody’s life experience, culture, and upbringing largely defines what their attitude to mortality is. That’s pretty much what informed the lyrics – the idea of trying to reflect on mortality from totally alien perspective.

I then brought these ideas in visually when I started animating the video. I was interested in allowing dream logic to collide with the new technical ideas I was experimenting with as an animator -– and this is the end result.”

11/12/17: Ramblin’ Man Fair 2018 announce Fish as Prog In The Park Stage headliner

Kobi Farhi comments: “It is a little bit hard for us sometimes to release only one song, especially as there is a whole concept album to follow. But if we have to choose one song to start with, it’ll be ‘Like Orpheus’.”

Hansi Kürsch comments: “What a marvelous song. I heard it and fell in love with it immediately. What keeps me so thrilled about it is this perfect blend of different musical cultures and the constant wave of emotions these guys have woven together in a stroke of genius. This song, as all their works, is a strong statement for humanity. I am really proud to be a part of such a fantastic family. All is one!”

The band comments: “Here it is! ‘Out There’, the first song from our new album ‘Boundless’, accompanied by a beautiful video shot in the Dolomites. When we started to write this album, there was no plan behind it. Just the idea of four guys and the chemistry between us, no limitations. This idea is mirrored in this video, the artwork and the album title. 05/12/17: Karnataka’s Ian Jones speaks of the band’s future

Ian Jones has announced details of the current situation with the band. In a statement on the Karnataka website Ian says:

“I just wanted to respond to any speculation on the band’s future – rest assured Karnataka is not going away and I am continuing to work on new material. Having nurtured and worked within the band for 20 years, change becomes inevitable. Recently, Cagri decided to step down to focus on his other projects and also spend time with his new family. Enrico has decided to focus less on touring and more on his studio work, tennis coaching and his own music career, although I look forward to continuing to work with him on Chasing The Monsoon. Hayley and Jimmy also continue to develop their own individual careers.

Reflecting on this, and in light of the departures, it felt like the right time to pause and consider the band’s future. Personal logistics and extensive touring contributed to limiting the time available for writing new material and this in turn had led to frustrations. The changes have helped bring this into sharper focus and sadly, I have to announce that this chapter of the band has drawn to a close. It’s been an exciting period in the band’s history and I’m incredibly grateful for everyone’s contribution during this time.

I appreciate this is sad news for many of you, but going forward, I’m excited about developing new Karnataka material alongside my other collaborations and I wish everyone every success with their individual projects.”

UPDATE: Today (6th December 2017) vocalist Hayley Griffiths has responded on her Facebook Page stating: “It is with enormous sadness that I learn the news tonight along with all of you that Karnataka will continue with a brand new line up.”

06/12/17: Joe Payne to re-launch his musical career

Following his breakdown and subsequent departure from The Enid – details of which can be found HERE on his website – Joe Payne has been working, in the studio, with Max Read and plans to re-launch his musical career with the release of a new seven track single early next year.

Max Read reports that for the last few months he has been working with Joe on his new single, I Need a Change, which also features an “epic and classical B-Side”. Max’s contribution has been to create the choir sound that he developed for the last few Enid albums and also the production and mixing.

Max Read says: “Far from being the pop record that he’d been itching to create, five years with The Enid has rubbed off on Joe in the most extraordinary way; the “single” is eight-and-a-half minutes of powerful, romantic and captivating music. If you liked the best of what we created over Joe’s time with the band, you’ll absolutely love it! Nick Willes has done a beautiful job of the bass and drums and Duncan McLaughlan provides some raunchy and also rather spooky guitars.”

Joe Payne also revealed a special Single Launch Show at Northhampton’s The Picturedrome on 2nd March 2018, where he and his new band will be perform the new single, along with some Enid favourites and other material “by artists with whom Joe has collaborated”.

04/12/17: Gandalf’s Fist release Christmas single

And more Christmas singles as Gandalf’s Fist announce the digital release of Winter’s Mourning – out today.

“The new single, the first release by the band as a six-piece, is penned in the style of a Victorian poem, reflecting of the dark and spectral side of the festive season, and recalls the days when rock giants such as Greg Lake or Jethro Tull would break from tradition to provide something to cater for a different musical pallet during the festive season. Driven by the piano and acoustic guitars, the sound is fresh and bright, yet with dark undertones.”

02/12/17: Rick Wakeman to record Piano Portraits live

Rick Wakeman reveals that he will be recording a live version of his well received Piano Portraits at Lincoln Cathedral on 7th March 2018. Live Portraits will be released on CD/DVD later in the year. A new PledgeMusic campaign has been started to help fund the recording & filming of the event!

Rick Wakemnan comments: “Last year I released the studio album Piano Portraits which was really well received and went Top 10 in the UK for several weeks. . Over the past year I have been touring “Live Portraits” to sell out audiences, so as a lasting record I have decided to film and record a very special performance of “Live Portraits” at Lincoln Cathedral on 7th March 2018.

After the success of the “The Myth & Legends of King Arthur” campaign in 2016 here on PledgeMusic I have decided to again work directly with you the fans on bringing this one off concert and recording to life.”

01/12/17: Big Big Train to release Christmas single

Big Big Train will release their first ever Christmas single on 8th December 2017 with a donation from the copies sold benefitting the Night Stop homelessness charity. The video features actor Mark Benton and The Chapel Choir Choristers of Jesus College, Cambridge.

David Longdon says: “Merry Christmas is a song about rediscovering our childlike belief in the magic of Christmas, despite living in an over commercial and sometimes cynical world. After all, what wouldn’t you give to believe again, like you believed back then?”

Actor Mark Benton spoke of the single: “When Big Big Train asked me to get involved with the video for Merry Christmas, I didn’t need much convincing. I’m a big fan of the band and love the way they tell stories through their beautifully crafted songs. This song is a real Christmas song with everything you need from choirs to sleigh bells. I’m playing triangle and kazoo on the next album but don’t tell the band because they don’t know it yet.”

Merry Christmas will be available in the following formats: 7-inch snow white gatefold vinyl, digipack and CD, hi-resolution and standard resolution downloads and streaming. Vinyl, CD and hi-resolution downloads also feature a ‘b’ side of Snowfalls.
