23/06/17: TesseracT release single and lyric video for the song Smile

To coincide with their U.S tour with Megadeath and Meshuggah, TesseracT have released a brand new single and lyric video for the song Smile

Vocalist Daniel Tompkins explains the lyrical concept & inspiration behind the song: “Lyrically ‘Smile’ carries a strong and forward sense of irony as we explore and darkest side of the human condition. The song will witness the manifestation of an ’entity’. Consciousness survives through constant manipulation only to propagate pessimism and hopelessness. Our entity observes, consumes and evolves, bearing witness to human existence, mimicking our presence in colossal form.”

Recorded at both 4D Sound Studios, Brighton and Celestial Sound Studios, Notts UK and produced by Acle Kahney during late spring this year “Smile”, described by the band as their most collaborative track of recent times, here, the vocals play a key part in shaping the structure of the song, the bass shaping the verses, so, allowing the band to explore new perspectives.

He continues: “After making the album, I really had no budget left to hire someone to make a video. I was really pleased that we managed to capture some great footage that perfectly fitted the theme of the song using budget equipment and the willing assistance of my photographer brother Dan Armstrong and my wife, who between them did the camera work.”

The video was directed by David Solbjørg – who comments: “It’s always fun and challenging to work with Leprous. This time around we chose to shoot with RED 8K cameras and brand new colour science – ipp2 – to get as atmospheric shots as possible in a demanding low light environment.”

And Leprous reveal: “From The Flame is definitely one of our favourite tracks from the album, with a strong hook and memorable melodies. Despite it sounding big and catchy, it also sounds pretty organic and it has a depth to it. We’re super proud of the song and feel it represents Leprous 2017 very well!”

Last month Leprous announced they would be embarking on an extensive European tour later this year with special guests Agent Fresco – plus Australia’s Alithia & fellow Norwegian’s Astrosaur. “On ‘Every Valley’ Willgoose takes us on a journey down the mineshafts of South Wales valleys. Yet the record is a metaphor for a much larger, global and social malaise, using the history of coal mining to shine a light on the disenfranchised.”

14/06/17: Gizmodrome release teaser for debut album

And who are Gizmodrome? They are Stewart Copeland (The Police), Mark King (Level 42), Adrian Belew (King Crimson, David Bowie, Frank Zappa & Talking Heads) and Vittorio Cosma (PFM). Collectively the band will release their self titled debut album through earMUSIC on 15th September 2017. By way of a taster the band have issued Amaka Pipa (Behind the Scenes Mix)

“In days of “long-distance recording”, with musicians emailing each other sound files, never having been in the same room, Gizmodrome started with the very opposite approach: real old school excitement by four musicians in the rehearsal room! It is not a surprise that four musicians with such diverse talents and backgrounds, playing one step from each other, have created music that is vibrant, electric and unpredictable.”

Mark King commented on the project: “Stewart texted me and asked if I fancied joining him and some of his friends in a studio in Milan”, remembers Mark King, “and next thing, I’m banging out basslines to his ferocious beats with Mr. Adrian Belew bouncing sounds off the walls that I never heard before, and Vittorio who somehow always pulls it all together. That is Gizmodrome!”

Adrian Belew adds: “Gizmodrome totally surprised me! I went into a studio in Italy not knowing what to expect and by the end of day one of recording I knew two things: the musical chemistry was incredibly exciting and we were having incredible fun!”.”

Further details to be announced….

14/06/17: Tim Bowness’ Plenty complete work on new studio album

No official release date has been announced, however a post on the Tim Bowness website reveals:

Tim Bowness“Tim has completed work on the 45 minute album, It Could Be Home. Mixed by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow), mastered by Steve Kitch (The Pineapple Thief), and featuring guest performances from Michael Bearpark, Peter Chilvers and Steve Bingham, this is a debut album 30 years after the event by Tim’s Liverpool-based pre-no-man 1980s Art Pop band Plenty (Tim Bowness, Brian Hulse and David K Jones).

Whilst re-writing some lyrics and streamlining elements of the songs’ arrangements, the band have remained faithful to both the spirit of the original recordings and the era in which the songs were written. A label and release date are currently under discussion.”

14/06/17: Kylver vinyl and cassette release for The Island

UK based heavy prog outfit Kylver announce that their well received concept album, The Island, released last year in CD and download formats, is to become available two new formats. The Island will be released on 12” vinyl via Newcastle label Inverted Grim-Mill and also on cassette through Colorado based label Graven Earth on the 6th July 2017.

“Kylver’s sound is a well-rounded exploration of many of the developments in heavy, progressive music over the past 40+ years. Instead of going thoroughly modern or thoroughly retro they combine the character and instrumental sounds of myriad eras together…” comments TPA’s Shawn Dudley. “This is ballsy, expressive stuff; hypnotic and powerful. The Island is a voyage worth taking.”

13/06/17: Caligula’s Horse to release new studio album

Australian progressive metallers, Caligula’s Horse have announced the release of their forthcoming studio album, In Contact, on 15th September 2017, through the InsideOut Music label. Today sees the band post the first teaser for the album…

As with the band’s acclaimed album ‘Bloom’ before it, ‘In Contact’ sees vocalist Jim Grey and lead guitarist Sam Vallen collaborating closely on the music and lyrics. Vallen comments: “In our creative process every idea is scrutinized, deconstructed, and rebuilt in a way that one of us, alone, could never achieve. We’re one another’s harshest critic, but fortunately we’ve done this for long enough now that our inspiration draws us in a similar direction – we can finish each other’s musical sentences, so to speak. And we’re lucky that’s the case, since In Contact proved to be a much more ambitious undertaking than anything we’d conceived of in the past.”

Vocalist Jim Grey adds: “In Contact has been an enormous proposition – the stories told in this album feel deeply personal, and we’ve never been more excited to share a new work with the world. The sounds on this album are dark and adventurous – but without losing the bittersweet and joyful sounds we developed in writing Bloom.”

Prior to the new album’s release, the band are set to return to Europe in June 2017 for a string of live dates including support slots with Opeth, Anathema & Pain of Salvation, UK headline shows and festival appearances at Midsummer Prog Festival (Valkenburg, Netherlands) & Be Prog! My Friend Festival (Barcelona, Spain).

To coincide with that, InsideOut Music will reissue the band’s first two albums ‘Moments From Ephemeral City’ & ‘The Tide, the Thief & River’s End’ on the 16th June 2017 as CD & digital download.

12/06/17: ELP’s final two studio albums extended and re-mastered

Hot on the heels of the recently re-mastered reissues of Works Volume 1, Works Volume 2 and Love Beach comes the final two Emerson, Lake & Palmer studio albums. The re-mastered Black Moon and In The Hot Seat will be released on CD, vinyl and download, through BMG, on 28 July 2017. Both albums come as double CDs featuring bonus material, photos and extensive liner notes.

Black Moon was ELP’s first studio album since 1978’s Love Beach and marked the reunion of the three original members after a 14-year hiatus. First released in May 1992, it was produced by Mark Mancina and engineered by Steve Kempster, who achieved a powerful, updated sound. The title track was inspired by TV images of oil fields set ablaze in 1991 during the first Gulf War.

Greg Lake recalls in the liner notes: “It really was a well-made, well-conceived record and all the new material was specifically written for the album”.”

Disc 1 features the re-mastered Black Moon album whilst the Disc 2 features the re-mastered Live At The Royal Albert Hall release from January 1993.

ELP’s ninth and final studio album was first released in September 1994. Produced by Keith Olsen, In The Hot Seat was an appropriate name, given that the trio was under pressure to consider adopting more ‘commercial’ material. Keith Emerson had also begun to suffer weakness in his fingers that affected his playing and had to undergo surgery to cure the problem. Understandably, he approached the sessions with some trepidation and would comment: “It was a tough time to make a record.”

Disc 1 features the re-mastered In the Hot Seat album, along with a studio recording of Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition and bonus tracks A Time And A Place and Keith Emerson’s Piano Concerto No.1: Third Movement. Disc 2 features a selection of bonus live recordings Tiger In The Spotlight, Hoedown, Honky Tonk Train Blues and a brace of medleys comprising Fanfare For The Common Man, Rondo, 21st Century Schizoid Man and America. First heard on the 1998 double album Then & Now.

In a statement on his Facebook Page: “We unfortunately have to announce that Phil Collins’ performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London will be postponed tonight (June 8) and tomorrow (June 9). Phil suffers from ‘drop foot’ as a result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk. He rose in the middle of the night to go to the toilet and slipped in his hotel room, hitting his head in the fall on a chair. 08/06/17: Ikarus premiere live video clips from Chronsome and Echo

Zurich-based minimalist jazz ensemble Ikarus will be premiering a series of live video clips taken from their Chronsome and Echo albums. The featured clip here is Ryuujin, the third track on Chronosome and was recorded live on 1st March 2017 at Theater am Gleis in Winterthur.

The track title is derived from a Japanese mythological god. “It’s the deity of the sea, which controls the tides, storms and tsunamis. It has the shape of a dragon which lives deep down on the bottom of the sea. Like controlled by this god, the song is a ship, that sails through different stages of clear weather, slight breezes and strong waves, and ends in a storm.”

Chronsome …is a highly atmospheric record making unusual use of voices as well as traditional instrumentation, and is well worth a listen.

02/06/17: Steven Wilson premieres second track from new album

Last month Steven Wilson announced details of a major European tour, in early 2018, in support of his fifth studio album To The Bone, which will be released via the new Caroline label on 13th August 2017.

01. To The Bone
02. Nowhere Now

05. Refuge
06. Permanating
07. Blank Tapes
08. People Who Eat Darkness
09. Song Of I
10. Detonation
11. Song Of Unborn

“Lyrically, the album’s eleven tracks veer from the paranoid chaos of the post-truth era and the creeping self-loathing of the technology age to steely fly-on-the-wall observations of the everyday lives of religious fundamentalists with a welcome shot or two of wide-eyed escapism. Sonically and melodically stunning, To The Bone is a high definition snapshot of the disconcerting times we live in.”

The previous video can be found in last month’s TPA News along with a list of UK tour dates. Full tour details can be found HERE on the Steven Wilson’s official website.

01/06/17: Magma re-release Wurdah Ïtah

Magma FB image
Today sees the re-mastered release of Magma‘s Wurdah Ïtah (74), which includes twenty five minutes of previously unreleased material. The bonus material features Wurdah Ïtah Prima Materia – the original demo used for the soundtrack to Tristan & Iseult’s film soundtrack.

“WURDAH ITAH was recorded in April 1974, just one month before the sessions which produced KOHNTARKOSZ. It forms the second movement of THEUSZ HAMTAAHK, an epic work in three movements of which MEKANIK DESTRUKTIW KOMMANDOH, recorded a year earlier by MAGMA, forms the final part. Performed by the core players in MAGMA at that time – Christian VANDER (piano, drums, vocals), Jannick TOP (bass), Klaus BLASQUIZ (vocals, percussion) and Stella VANDER (vocals) – WURDAH ITAH is music stripped down to its bare essence. Although a total contrast to the splendour and orchestral power of M.D.K., it nevertheless has just as great rhythmic power and surprising vocal lyricism, unquestionably marked by the claws of MAGMA.”

Wurdah Ïtah was recorded & mixed between the 4th & 8th April 1974 at Paris’ Studio De Milan. The new digipack, available through Seventh Records, includes a new booklet and lyrics.
