We’ve been opening the recent gigs with this single edit of “Trojan”, and it’s a real barn-stormer of a track which really shows off the power of our new rhythm section. 21/04/17: Big Big Train premiere Experimental Gentlemen

Big Big Train have premiered their new video for Experimental Gentlemen exclusively with Prog.

The promo features a shorter version of the track, with the song appearing in full on the band’s upcoming album Grimspound, which is now available for pre-order.

Bassist Greg Spawton tells Prog: “This song is our celebration of the astronomers, botanists and scientists who were aboard HMS Endeavour on Captain Cook’s first voyage of discovery in 1768. The voyage was primarily a scientific expedition made at the behest of the Royal Society. Cook called the scientists on the ship his ‘experimental gentlemen’.”

Big Big Train vocalist David Longdon previously revealed that the band had progressed their sound on the record. He said: “Grimspound has followed on very swiftly from Folklore. We found ourselves with a wealth of new material and, with writing input from Danny, Rachel and Rikard, we have been able to move the band’s sound forward while building on all we have learnt over the last few years. We are determined to work hard and, as they say, make hay while the sun shines.”

Big Big Train will play three shows at London’s Cadogan Hall at the end of September and the beginning of October. The first two concerts are sold out and limited seats are available for the remaining Sunday matinee performance.

“Aiming for both wilder and yet more progressive and melodic horizons, we’re always up to surprise and challenge you…”

Ivar Bjørnson Official comments: “It is absolutely fantastic to be in the studio with these new songs. So many doors were opened with “In Times” and the times (sic) that followed; for us as a band, for me as a composer and I guess for us all on a personal level. I have never worked this hard to put together music for an album before, and that intensity continues into the studio where everybody is giving their everything, every hour of every day. We are a tighter unit than ever before, which is obvious sonically. The concept conjured by myself and old war-brother Grutle is the strongest we have worked with. Finally, I am proud that we have taken more risks than ever before, and one in particular – and it is yielding awesome results. What does that mean? Stay tuned to find out!”

We would appreciate privacy and time while we grieve the loss of our dad, grandad, friend and musical genius. We will update close friends and family when service arrangements have been made and will notify the public of an open memorial service, which all would be welcome. We are undeniably still in shock with his unexpected death and cannot begin to put into words the overwhelming sadness we are experiencing. He is missed tremendously.”

07/04/17: Gungfly launch live video of the title track from forthcoming album

Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly have released a live video of the title track off their forthcoming album On Her Journey To The Sun, performed live at Sound Society studios in February 2017. On Her Journey To The Sun will be released, through InsideOut Music, on 19th May 2017.

Rikard comments on the video: “On Her Journey To The Sun is the title track for the new Gungfly album and I would say it is one of the poppier tunes of the bunch. Instead of doing a traditional music video we decided to record a live version of the song in the studio and film it! This seemed more natural for Gungfly and gave us a chance to show you the live band.

The title comes from the late stand-up comedian Bill Hicks who asked himself what moths used to fly into before there was electric light. “…are there moths on their way to the sun right now going: it’s gonna be worth it…” the lyrics have nothing to do with this but rather deal with letting go of someone or something that you just can’t resist. Hope you’ll like it!”

07/04/17: Jethro Tull’s Songs From The Wood 40th Anniversary Edition

Jethro Tull - Songs from the WoodJethro Tull will release a 3CD/2DVD set to mark the 40th anniversary of Songs From The Wood, debatably one of the band’s finest albums …”and the first in the band’s acclaimed late 1970s Folk Rock Trilogy”.

“Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and it is perceived today as one of the band’s most popular albums.

Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds “Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!”, while guitarist Martin Barre remembers that “It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had… I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree”.

Jethro Tull’s tenth album was inspired by Ian Anderson’s departure to a more rural environment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside.”.

The Parlophone Records’ long awaited “Country Set”, will be released on 19th May 2017 and features:
3CD/2DVD and 96 page book deluxe package
Including the original album remixed by Steven Wilson
A host of unreleased associated recordings and live tracks
DVD components featuring a live concert, HD audio and 5.1 mixes

“mouse on the keys are well-known for blurring genres and their latest release Out of Body is no exception, traversing dark and avant-garde electronica, minimalist neo-classical, whilst also continuing to develop on their math-rock tendencies with rapid-fire time signature changes, angular rhythms and melodic yet frenetic piano work.” Out of Body was released earlier this year via Topshelf Records.

03/04/17: The Fierce And The Dead to release new live album this month

The Fierce And The Dead will release Field Recordings, through at Bad Elephant Music on 28th April 2017.

“Taken from the band’s incendiary set at last year’s Ramblin’ Man Festival, Field Recordings captures the band in their element – performing live on stage in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The album features two previously unreleased songs which may (or may not!) feature on The Fierce And The Dead’s third solo album, currently in production.”

Matt Stevens comments: “The Fierce And The Dead is all about the live experience and this recording from Ramblin’ Man really captures that”. “It was an honour to be asked to play on the same bill as some legendary acts”, adds bassist Kev Feazey. “As a band we started out in tiny cramped venues so having the opportunity to play our noisy weird music to an appreciative audience on a big stage is both surreal and excellent”. And from guitarist and meteorologist Steve Cleaton: “Such a joy and honour to support truly great bands, playing in front of such a rocking and friendly crowd, and the weather was right as well!”

02/04/17: Dark Dark Horse release new EP

Leicester duo Dark Dark Horse comprising of producer & multi-instrumentalist Jamie Ward and vocalist James Stafford release the Luna II EP on 7th April 2017 via Little Fanfare. After a break from activity with Ward touring full time with globetrotting instrumentalists, Maybeshewill, 2017 marks a rebirth of the band having signed a publishing deal with Warner’s W Songs. This will be the duo’s debut album Centuries. The first single, Frontiers was released last month:

“On their new expansive EP, Luna II Ward and Stafford glide their way through the 5 tracks with shimmering synthesizers, luscious piano melodies, inventive beats and dreamy vocals. It’s otherworldly electronica with real depth and warmth, a sound that the duo describe as “electronica with a human heart”.

01/04/17: Anathema premiere the first track Springfield from forthcoming album

Anathema’s eleventh full-length album The Optimist is scheduled for release on 9th June 2017 through Kscope. Full details, including track listing, album artwork and tour dates can be found HERE on TPA. By way of a teaser the band have released the track Springfield from forthcoming album:

Daniel Cavanagh: “Here we present the song ‘Springfield’, it’s actually the song that closed our unforgettable Wembley gig with Opeth and it seemed to be a track that just fell into place without much effort. It seemed to do itself. The song forms part of a narrative that runs through The Optimist album, it’s a narrative that begins where A Fine Day To Exit left off. The album is a journey. The songs are ambiguous. There is no right or wrong way to take them. Make of them what you will.”
