30/03/17: Markus Reuter releases new studio album next month
German based composer and Touch Guitarist, Markus Reuter will release his latest studio album Falling For Ascension on 21st April 2017. The album will be released through 7d Media in the USA/Canada and Ronin Rhythm Records in Europe.
Reuter leads this acclaimed ensemble through a series of compositions that are amongst his earliest, having all been written between 1985 and 1987. “For me the striking thing about this album is that the themes and melodies and rhythms that you’re hearing were written when I was 14 years old,” explains Reuter. “I had these little motifs set aside for such a long time and I never knew what to do with them.”
When the opportunity arose to work with SONAR in 2014 these pieces seemed the perfect fit. “I rediscovered the beauty and power in them and also a kind of timelessness in them. It doesn’t matter that I wrote them when I was 14. I would still write the same thing now. Falling For Ascension has this openness to it which is a new discovery for me. It’s interesting that I’m discovering this on very old material,” Reuter explains.
Since the late 1990s Markus Reuter has steadily made a name for himself as a formidable player, a gifted improviser and a composer for both rock and classical music ensembles. As one third of Stick Men, since 2010 Reuter has toured extensively across Europe, Asia, Australia, and in North and South America alongside with King Crimson’s Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto. In 2013 his large-scale composition for orchestra, Todmorden 513 received its world premiere performed by the Colorado Chamber Orchestra.

28/03/17: Bader Nana to release new album next month
Kuwaiti based multi-instrumentalist and producer, Bader Nana returns with his latest studio album, Devolver, scheduled for release on 10 April 2017. His previous studio albums Wormwood (2011) and Anthology (2013) received critical acclaim from across the progressive communities.
“Devolver has been in production for more than 3 years allowing Nana to explore new sonic and musical territory at his leisure to his complete satisfaction. The music remains on a progressive bedrock, as with previous releases, but is driven by a fresh message of hope. This hope is translated onto a diverse palette of musical arrangements ranging from cinematic orchestration, to soaring ballads, to dirty distorted rock anthems. This album features several guest appearances including guitar and vocal work by Ramzi Ramman (The JLP Show, Lebanon) and vocals by Omar Afuni (Omar Afuni, Dubai).”

24/03/17: Anathema reveal details for new album
After Anathema’s 2012 award-winning album Weather Systems and 2014’s spellbinding Distant Satellites, the ambient rockers are back with their eleventh full-length, The Optimist. Due for release on 9th June through Kscope The Optimist will soon reveal some of the darkest, most challenging and unexpected music the sextet have put their name to.
The idea for The Optimist was born from the front cover artwork of the band’s 2001 album A Fine Day To Exit Daniel Cavanagh explains “I suppose you might say the album is semi-autobiographical because this time we used a surrogate,” he says, of the character that is The Optimist “We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative of The Optimist. It was John’s idea to write a narrative, so I took A Fine Day To Exit as the starting point”. Vincent elaborates further on the earlier album’s artwork influence “The guy who disappeared – you never knew what happened to him, did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego – the last known location of The Optimist – shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit.”

21/03/17: Soul Enema premiere Breaking The Waves lyric video
Progressive metallers Soul Enema premiere a new lyric video clip for Breaking The Waves, taken from the band’s upcoming album, Of Clans and Clones and Clowns. Although no release date has been announced the album will contain over seventy minutes of material and features special guests Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) and Yossi Sassi (ex-Orphaned Land). The track, Breaking The Waves, was inspired by the cult film, of the same name, by Lars von Trier…
“What makes the story line quite special, is the way it deals with a complicated paradox”, comments keyboard player and songwriter Constantin Glantz, “The notion of self-sacrifice in the name of the one you love, can be the most romantic and heroic thing ever, and there are numerous plots that speak about that. But at the same time, this case can be the most miserable and sickening version of self-destructive heroism in existence, it’s about paying the real price to the very end. The way the very deep, core programs of human being – like love, faith, devotion, sexual instincts behave or misbehave in those twisted situations, the way it makes you think about the basis of these things, is quite stimulating in understanding the human nature. That’s the intriguing aspect of von Trier’s approach in his films. And this time we also wanted to express a bit of that cold Scottish rural highlands atmosphere in the music and arrangements. This one is actually more chilling and edgy, even though it also contains some softer parts.”
21/03/17: The Doors will release live vinyl album for Record Store Day
“Originally recorded on March 7, 1967 in San Francisco, Live at the Matrix has been newly mastered from recently discovered original tapes by the historic Doors engineer, Bruch Botnick. Limited to only 10,000 numbered prints worldwide, the track listing may be viewed…” HERE.
This will be preceded by the release of a deluxe, 50th anniversary edition of their self titled debut album on 31 March 2017.
Packaged in 12″ hardcover book the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition “includes a remastered version of the album’s original stereo mix, available on CD for the first time in a decade and remastered for the first time in nearly 30 years. The album’s original mono mix was also remastered for this set and is making its CD debut here. An LP-version of the mono mix is also included. The third disc features live performance from The Matrix in San Francisco recorded just weeks after The Doors was released.” – mentioned above.
“Music journalist David Fricke provides detailed liner notes for the set, which includes a selection of rare and previously unseen photographs.”

20/03/17: Pink Floyd to go into Interstellar Overdrive for Record Store Day
The Second Disc reveal that Pink Floyd will unveil a new 12-inch single, featuring a previously unreleased 1966 instrumental version of Interstellar Overdrive, for Record Store Day.
“The mono single of “Interstellar Overdrive” will be a one-sided 12-inch, 180-gram black vinyl release, and will play at 33 1/3 RPM. The single will be packaged with a fold-out poster and an A6 postcard featuring an image of the band taken during the recording of the debut single “Arnold Layne.”
“Written and performed by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, this 1966 version of “Interstellar Overdrive” clocks in at close to 15 minutes long. The original recording was made at the Thomson studio in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire in November, 1966, before the Floyd signed to EMI. A different, shorter version of the composition subsequently appeared on the band’s debut long-player, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The images adorning the single artwork have been taken from Pink Floyd’s performance at UFO at the Blarney Club, London, on January 13, 1967.”

18/03/17: Dante to release live DVD
The Gentle Art Of Music (GAOM) label announce the release of Bavarian progressive metallers Dante‘s live DVD. Recorded at Teatr Slaski, Katowice, Poland on 18 May 2016, the DVD “displays a collective of musicians at the height of its powers”.
“The set list of Katowice did not only include songs of the latest record “When We Were Beautiful” but also comprised classics from the group’s ten-year history like “Vanessa” and “November Red.” The Augsburg show fills the contextual gaps that the temporal confines of a concert ripped in the first recording: material that could not be fit in the concert at Katowice was simply played in Augsburg. That is why the tragic death of founding-member Markus Berger in the year 2013 is not only a constant and spiritually important factor within the concept of Dante. Through the inclusion of his compositions Berger is really always at the heart of the show. That is the constellation that leads the way to emotionally charged performances like the ones that managed to entice the audiences of Katowice and Augsburg into the stream of energy, emotion, precision and artistic intelligent that can be experienced firsthand on “Where Life Was Beautiful.”
Where Life Was Beautiful (Live in Katowice) DVD will be released through Gentle Art Of Music on 28 April 2017.

17/03/17: Lonely Robot launch Everglow audio from forthcoming album
TPA reported last month that John Mitchell‘s Lonely Robot had announced their second studio album, The Big Dream, to be released through InsideOut Music on 28th April 2017. Today and ahead of the release they launch the first track to be taken from the album. Everglow…
John Mitchell commented on the track: “Everglow is the first track I wrote for The Big Dream, it encapsulates the still present feeling that despite being surrounded en masse, we are a synthesised society barely truthfully communicating with each other on a less than superficial, soap box sermon level. Everglow is the hopeful ray of light when the phones go away and the eyes finally make contact. Coming from me, that’s almost ironic!”
All the instrumentation on the album is by John Mitchell except for the drums which are played by Craig Blundell, however the live band, who hit the road next month, will feature Steve Vantsis (bass) & Liam Holmes (keyboards) along with will be John with Craig. Dates announced are:

The music came very easily for me this time, which gives the album a slightly more coherent feel than that of my previous releases. Surrounded by top notch musicians, the delivery is more than one could ask for. They truly put their heart and soul into every single note sung and played. And so the Vampirate’s journey continues into modern times…”

“What other planets are out there? “Having seen the “Solar Sea” video for the first time using a VR headset Richard enthusiastically states “THAT WAS INCREDIBLE! It’s amazing that Miles (Skarin) has captured the movement and turbulence of planets, the particles and matter that I was trying to reference in the music. It’s a totally immersive experience and, along with the artwork, another important addition to the album experience”.

11/03/17: Sleepmakeswaves share new track and confirmed for ArcTangent Festival
Post-rock trailblazers sleepmakeswaves continue their massive start to 2017 by sharing another new track from their upcoming album Made of Breath Only set for release on Friday 7th April 2017 through Bird’s Robe Records.
Speaking about ‘Into The Arms of Ghosts’ guitarist Otto Wicks-Green comments: “This track was one of the last songs to come together on the record, despite comprising some parts that were amongst the first to be written (the lead melody for instance). It’s one of the darker and heavier moments on the album and deals more directly with feelings around loss and adjustment to that. The soaring lead lines made our producer Nick joke that it should be the soundtrack to someone jumping off a mountain in a parachute before landing in a stadium with a guitar. We should really try and get that happening.”
The band are currently on tour in China and have recently been added to the line-up for this year’s ArcTanGent festival in August.

09/03/17: Jon Anderson to perform with Yes at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards
Billboard report that Jon Anderson will perform Roundabout with current Yes members Steve Howe and Alan White along with Yes alumni Rick Wakeman, Tony Kaye and Bill Bruford when the band are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 7th April 2017. It was rumoured that Rush’s Geddy Lee would stand in for the late Chris Squire, however this now seems to be unfounded…
Jon Anderson will shortly be embarking on the UK leg of the ARW tour which features former Yes men Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman commented “Being accepted into the Hall of Fame is like icing on the cake of life…”
“We’re definitely connected,” said Anderson — who’s currently working with Wakeman and Rabin as ARW. “It’s a family. There’s always animosity. People that you love you don’t always like, and there’s always going to be that. But when you’re celebrating who you truly are, you forget about all that and just get on with meeting each other and seeing each other, and it’s just one of those things. It’s not a problem; We’ll just get together and have fun. Music is a healing force on every level.”

08/03/17: HRH PROG VI moves forward to November 2017
Just ahead of HRH PROG V, the festival organisers announce a new date for the calendar as HRH PROG VI moves forward to 16th-19th November 2017. Carl Palmer’s ELP Tribute to Three Uncommon Men have been confirmed as one the headlining acts.
“Our HRH Prog community has grown tenfold in the last 5 years,” explains HRH Founder/CEO Jonni Davis, “so realistically we should be staging two shows a year. Our fans are the best touchstones and guides for us: we’re community-led, we listen to what the fans want and provide it. The take-up on bookings shows we’re giving fans what they want, both in the acts and with the HRH experience. And there’s so much talent out there! When you see what we’ve got lined up for a November, you’ll understand why we’re upping our game.
The first addition to the hugely-anticipated HRH Prog bill is Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy, which will be performing “In Memory Of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake & John Wetton”. Whilst the majority of the material will be ELP’s, a couple of King Crimson songs that featured John Wetton will be included in the set.
The legendary Carl Palmer himself adds, “The up and coming tour in November is a celebration of the music I have made over the years with Keith and Greg, and also John Wetton who has died this year. These are three very important people in my life. When all three died within a ten month period of each other, it was a great loss to us all. I look forward to playing some of the music I personally made with all of them over the years, at HRH Prog VI in November.”

08/03/17: Rikard Sjöblom’s Gunfly to release new album in May
Following the demise of Sweden’s Beardfish, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Rikard Sjöblom has returned to his solo project Gungfly and will release a new album, On Her Journey To The Sun, on 19th May 2017, through InsideOut Music.
Rikard Sjöblom comments: “Gungfly was born out of necessity, songs came to life whenever there was downtime with Beardfish or if a song didn’t quite fit within Beardfish’s (otherwise quite broad and eclectic) frame of styles. I basically started recording songs, mainly pop-oriented material, but being the type of songwriter and musician I am, some prog slipped through the radar as well. With the break-up of Beardfish all of the prog-related material I write needed to go somewhere and Gungfly was ready and able for this step!”
