22/12/16: Bill Hunt reveals the sequel to Wizzard’s ‘The Carlsberg Special’ 44 years later

Bill Hunt, with the backing of a new Midlands super-group The Ancient Order of Froth Blowers, have released El Original Brew, a brand new composition.

Why a double B side? Well in 1972 Bill wrote the B side of the first Wizzard single, Ball Park Incident, which sold over 250,000 copies.

“43 years later, Bill has written the follow up – EL ORIGINAL BREW. It came to him in a flash! After his early rock band experiences, followed by 30 years in music education, intertwined with a performing and writing career, including a jointly written album with song writing partner Dave Hill, of once rival band Slade – we both think we had the best Christmas single – inspiration struck. It came through his meeting up with Hamstall Ridware and Dr C. D. Mille of The Sundae Club, to whom he was introduced by his old (well actually a little bit younger than him), school mate Steve Winwood. Ridware and Mille were massive fans of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and the early ELO style. The seed was sown; the horn was blown.”

21/12/16: United Progressive Fraternity release new For Travelling Man movie

ESHU is the Travelling Man, ‘Keeper of the Crossroads’, a mythical god in African culture who guides and teaches by teasing and tricking”.

The video “takes a surrealistic sci-fi and fantasy journey through past, present, and future with ESHU – the Keeper of the Crossroads and discover what awaits you on the right path”.

Today sees the digital release of the third album from Snow King, the man behind Plastic Noose and follows up the well received debut, Zu Allen (11) and Fractured Despondency (13) albums.

Desolation contains elements of classical, progressive rock, avant-garde, industrial black metal and I best described as a dark mixture of Gary Numan, Triptykon, Shostakovich, Genesis and Rush.”

The album is available through Bandcamp HERE.

20/12/16: Festive release from Ian Anderson & string quartet

Following fast on the footsteps of Pass The Bottle (A Christmas Song), Jethro Tull The String Quartet release a second Christmas offering Ring Out These Bells, an adaptation of Tull’s Ring Out, Solstice Bells, from their forthcoming album Jethro Tull The String Quartet scheduled fro release on 24th March 2017.

Ian Anderson comments: “Ring Out These Bells” was written for the Songs From The Wood album as a reference to the winter solstice pagan festival and the latter day transplanted Christian notional birth of the Biblical Jesus, but then the record company thought that we should release it as a Christmas single.

After a futile attempt to record a simpler, catchier version, we reverted to the original recording. It was released just too late to make the Top Ten charts in time for Christmas. But it has remained a radio play staple in the radio playlists for Christmas ever since. This new string quartet version captures the spirit of the original recording but with a really authentic Christmas Classical interpretation with the flute and a bit of the vocal sections of the familiar version. I can just feel the mistletoe quivering in anticipation of a quick kiss and no tell.”

20/12/16: Yes to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Yes will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the Class of 2017, it was announced this morning. The induction, following two previous nominations, will occur one year shy of the legendary progressive rock band’s 50th anniversary.

“What an honor this is for us and all involved with the history of this band,” shares guitarist Steve Howe. “We thank all the Yes fans who have been so passionate over the decades, and helped us to keep the flag flying. It is the fans who have constantly demanded our inclusion. They have been heard.”

“We look forward to accepting this esteemed award next spring in honor of our fallen brother, Chris Squire, who would have been delighted to see his musical vision finally receive such recognition,” adds drummer Alan White. “We thank everyone who voted for Yes. We’ll see you soon, Cleveland!”

The members of Yes who will officially be inducted into the Rock Hall are the “Union” tour line-up: current members White and Howe, the band’s late bassist and founding member Chris Squire, and former members Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), Tony Kaye (keyboards), Rick Wakeman (keyboards) and Trevor Rabin (guitar).

“Yes was like my first girlfriend, to whom I was hopelessly committed,” says Bruford. “Despite a couple of wrinkles, I’m glad to hear the old girl is in fine shape.”

Kaye confirms, “I am honored to be included in Yes’ induction. I am delighted for my friends in the band, and I salute Chris, without whom it would never have happened. Chris would have been so very proud.”

In addition to Steve Howe and Alan White, YES’ current line-up includes Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and Chris Squire’s choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015).

Also being inducted in 2017 will be Journey, Electric Light Orchestra, Pearl Jam and Joan Baez.

19/12/16: Jobs lost as rock music media firm Team Rock collapses

The BBC reported earlier today that the Team Rock Limited (Classic Rock, Metal Hammer, Prog, The Golden Gods Awards and the Classic Rock Awards) had gone into administration with the loss of over 70 jobs…

‘Only viable option’

Joint administrator Tom MacLennan said Team Rock had traded at a loss “for a significant period of time”.

He added: “The company explored every option to secure the long-term future of the business, however the constraints on the cash position of the business were such that administration was the only viable option.

“The administration presents an excellent opportunity to acquire high profile rock music titles, products and brands that have a substantial global following.

The brands and assets could appeal to a music publishing business looking to expand its portfolio, or an entrepreneur that sees the potential for developing the brands.”

Team Rock, which was founded in 2012, bought the Classic Rock, Prog and Metal Hammer magazines from Future Publishing in 2013.

According to the administrators, the company’s website attracted more than three million hits per month.

The company also owns an extensive archive of video, radio, images and magazines.

“Lost In The Ghost Light is a concept album revolving around the onstage and backstage reflections of a fictional ‘classic’ Rock musician in the twilight of his career. Ranging from the hypnotic opener Worlds Of Yesterday to the wistful climax of Distant Summers, via the thrilling rage of Kill The Pain That’s Killing You and the orchestral expanse of You’ll Be The Silence, the album features some stunning solos and harmonically rich compositions that represent Bowness’s most musically ambitious work to date.”

16/12/16: Richard Barbieri set to release new studio album

Richard Barbieri will release his third studio album, Planets + Persona, through Kscope, on 3rd March 2017.

“The Japan and Porcupine Tree keyboardist Richard Barbieri releases his most sonically expansive work to date, with a brand new album entitled Planets + Persona. It is the third Barbieri solo album, but the first to feature such a wide pallet of instrumentation. Vintage analogue synthesisers combine with acoustic performances and jazz elements. Twisted voices are always present, though not in a language we can recognise. Barbieri skilfully utilises the talents of a pan-European core of musicians to produce an album that marries synthesised sounds with organic instrumentation to conjure up vivid, colourful and allusive soundscapes. It’s a skilful commingling of texture and tone, mood and musicality.”

08/12/16: Greg Lake ~ RIP

It is with sadness, that once again in 2016, we say farewell to one of music’s endearing legends. No introductions necessary here, just the sad news that Greg Stuart Lake passed away yesterday, Wednesday 7th December 2016.

Speaking of his friend Carl Palmer said:

“It is with great sadness that I must now say goodbye to my friend and fellow band-mate, Greg Lake.

Greg’s soaring voice and skill as a musician will be remembered by all who knew his music and recordings made with ELP and King Crimson. I have fond memories of those great years we had in the 1970s and many memorable shows we performed together.

Having lost Keith this year as well, has made this particularly hard for all of us. As Greg sang at the end of Pictures At An Exhibition, “death is life.” His music can now live forever in the hearts of all who loved him.”

The Mute Gods announce the release of their forthcoming second album tardigrades will inherit the earth, scheduled for release on the 24th February 2017. The follow up to this year’s well received debut, do nothing till you hear from me – read TPA’s review HERE – sees the trio deliver an “adventurous rock effort infused with timely perspectives on the state of religion, politics, media, and the environment”.

The Mute Gods was founded in 2015 and features Nick Beggs (bassist, Stick and vocals), Roger King (keyboards & guitar) and Marco Minnemann (drums & guitars). Unlike the debut Mute Gods album, which included several special guest appearances, Nick Beggs has chosen to keep this release to the core trio, thus ensuring “a laser focus and consistency…”

Nick Beggs had this to say: “I know I’m not the only person who feels the way I do,” says Beggs. “Other people understand the state of the world and what’s at stake as we make one terrifyingly bad decision after an other. This album asks people to take off their rose-tinted spectacles and consider the reality facing us. At this point in my career, I feel strongly that it’s important to use music as a vehicle for truth, not just feel-good entertainment.”
