28/08/16: Fractal Mirror release first video from their third album Slow Burn 1

Fractal Mirror release of the first video from their well-received third album Slow Burn 1, produced by Brett Kull of echolyn and mastered by Larry ‘Synergy’ Fast. Miracle is the opening track from the album where “the album adopts the late 60’s psychedelic/folk feel that will remain through most of the album…” The video was produced by Fractal Mirror drummer and lyricist, Frank Urbaniak; footage of the band was shot by Andrė de Boer.

“With the Miracle video, we tried to reflect the message of the song which is that we sometimes resort to passive vs. action oriented approaches to dealing with the future This is apparent to those of the baby boomer generation who see those dreams of the 60’s and early 70’s fade with our legacy of a more complicated and divided world. The lyrics and video reflects on what is a ‘miracle’ -is it technology, faith, or just persistence in the face of daunting challenges?”

25/08/16: New Jadis studio album is nearing completion

UK melodic rockers Jadis recently revealed that their latest studio album, No Fear of Looking Down is nearing completion and is expected to be released sometime in September 2016. The eight track album will be independently released through the band’s own label and available in several formats, including vinyl.

“The title, ‘No Fear of Looking Down’ and the idea, came about after watching on YouTube the perilous ascents…and descents of city and urban structures by fearless young ‘explorers’. They have now added to their dramatic antics by filming the climbs using high definition GoPro cameras. Being somewhat anxious myself when it comes to sheer heights, these unnerving accounts struck a chord with me and therefore thought it would be an interesting subject. Think climbing one of the Battersea Power Station chimneys at night, while it’s windy and with no harness, or free climbing Centrepoint in London and then performing handstands on one of the cranes…”

23/08/16: Gilli Smyth ~ RIP

Gilli Smyth_RIPIt is with sadness that we bring news of the passing of Gillian Mary “Gilli” Smyth – who passed away yesterday, aged 83. Gilli will be perhaps remembered for her work with Gong and its many offshoots. The following was posted on the Gong website earlier today…

“Gilli died at mid-day in Australia surrounded by loved ones. She had been admitted to Byron Bay hospital with pneumonia a couple of days ago. She was 83 and also ageless.

Her unique stage presence and vocals manifestied and determindly represented a vital, deeply fundimental feminine principle within the Gong universe. She last performed with the band in 2012.

We will miss her. Love and laughter to the Good Witch.”

23/08/16: Riverside to release instrumental album in October

Riverside have announced the release a new album, a transitional offering made up from songs taken from the years 2007 to 2015, as well as new tracks recorded at the beginning of 2016.

Mariusz Duda about the upcoming release:

Riverside - Eye Of The Soundscape“I had a feeling that the sixth RIVERSIDE album might be the last chapter of a story. That the future releases might have a different sound, a different character… Unofficially, I called our latest three albums “the crowd trilogy”. Each subsequent title was longer by one word – four, five, six. Six words was long enough as a title and I thought that was the one to finish it off with…

Before we started a new chapter, perhaps a “new trilogy”, I had an idea to release a complementary album. An album in between. An album we had always wanted to record. It wouldn’t be just new music but in our case and in such configuration it would definitely be a new quality because we hadn’t released such an album before.

For years, we have accumulated a lot of material, a part of which was released on bonus discs. I know that some of our listeners still haven’t heard those pieces and do not realise that RIVERSIDE, basically right from the start, have been experimenting with ambient and progressive electronic music. And that’s always been a part of our music DNA.

So I presented the idea to the rest of the band and the decision was unanimous. We decided to make a compilation of all our instrumental and ambient pieces, and release it this year as an independent album. Some of the songs would be re-mixed to make them sound better, but most of all, we’d add new compositions.

At the beginning of the year, we locked ourselves in the studio and we started to compose. We even published a picture on our facebook page, in which Grudzien is holding a small keyboard as a joke. That was that recording session. We were working with smiles on our faces, genuinely excited, knowing that this time it wasn’t just a bonus disc or an addition to something “bigger” but a fully fledged, independent release with that kind of music, full of space, trance, melodies and electronics. The day before I got a text message from Grudzien, “I really can’t wait for this release, I have always had a dream for RIVERSIDE to release such an album.”

“Eye Of The Soundscape” compiles all the special instrumental RIVERSIDE tracks previously used as bonus material for the “Shrine Of New Generation Slaves” and “Love, Fear and the Time Machine” albums, alongside rare cuts as well as 4 new songs (“Where The River Flows”, “Shine”, “Sleepwalkers” and “Eye Of The Soundscape”) into a massive playing time of +100 minutes, which will be available as 2CD-Mediabook, 3LP (With both CD’s as bonus) or Digital Download.

18/08/16: John Wesley posts lyric video for new single

John Wesley will release his eighth studio album a way you’ll never be on 7th October 2016 through InsideOut Music. Ahead of the release and by way of a taster InsideOut post a lyric video for the first single, by the light of the sun

Commenting on the single, John says:

“I’m happy to introduce “by the light of the sun”, the opening track of my new album, “a way you’ll never be”. This song sets the tone, as a good representation of the style of music and sound for this album. It also opens the door lyrically to introduce the concept of the album, which is my interpretation of the parallels between my favorite author, Ernest Hemingway’s “Lost Generation” and what I perceive to be our own modern day version of a “Lost Generation”. This theme is threaded through all of the songs on the album, with some of the songs making solid connections to characters, stories, and my personal interpretations of some of Hemingway’s writing.

The very first line of lyrics in the song make the connection to the “burning man” character used in the imagery of the cover art. “By the light of a sun, burning dreams into ash….”, this concept that many of us chase our dreams through life and sometimes the closer we get to them, the more these aspirations can seem to “burn us”.

The image of the “burning man” is meaningful on many levels, which contextually evolves from song to song. At times it represents change, or courage, as well as a burning passion. Other times it even ties into the the myth of “Icarus” having pushed too hard and flown too near the sun.”

15/08/16: The Tangent reveal A Few Steps Down the Wrong Road

Earlier this month it was reported that The Tangent had recorded their first material together since Andy Tillison’s illness, the result being a twenty minute piece entitled A Few Steps Down the Wrong Road. Details can be found further down this page. It was also revealed that the track, in its entirety, would be released today – and here it is…

A Few Steps Down the Wrong Road was made as a response to the UK vote to leave Europe: “A film by EU progressive rock band The Tangent, made in the wake of the UK’s vote to leave the organisation and the subsequent racist behaviour of the press and many people around the country. Contains Strong Language.”

Andy Tillison commented: “Inevitably, after a very upbeat and nostalgic album that revisited our early career with “A Spark In the Aether”, I wanted to turn my head again towards the more socially aware music that I have written since I was a teenager. The idea has been building with me for some time, and now it’s time for me to get on with it. In the light of the UK’s decision to leave the EU, a political framework where the Tangent flourished as an international positive idea, it’s obvious that I want to say something about that. I’ve never been good at political debate, but in song I find my courage and I’m not letting this pass me by.”

The track is destined for a forthcoming album, to be released through InsideOut Music, however at this moment in time there are no further details available.

It highlights the many imperfections that make us special and reminds us not to fear them, but to embrace them. In the words of Leonard Cohen. “There is a crack in everything. 01/08/16: The Room to film October show for DVD release

The Room DVD posterThe Room reveal that we will be filming their show at Bilston’s The Robin 2 on 23rd October 2016 and that the DVD is planned for release early in the New Year.

“With two albums under their belts the band are renowned for delivering an energy laden show and are promising some surprises in October.”

Last month saw the band release a digital single, As Crazy As It Seems, through Bandcamp and taken from their second album Beyond The Gates Of Bedlam.

“The single epitomises the rich musical heritage at the heart of The Room’s progressive tinged rock – a combination of impressive musicianship, catchy hooks and thought-provoking lyrics.”
