27/04/16: Opeth’s Lamentations gets the vinyl treatment

Opeth - LamentationsMusic For Nations have announced the release of Swedish progressive titans Opeth’s critically acclaimed live album, ‘Lamentations’. Originally released as a DVD the album will be available for the first time ever on triple heavy weight 180 gram vinyl.

‘Lamentations’ features a live performance of Opeth’s Damnation album in full, interspersed with songs from the band’s masterpieces Blackwater Park and Deliverance. Lamentations will be released on 22nd July 2016.

27/04/16: Johanna Elina releases second album in May

Expanding the boundaries of alternative pop, traditional song formats and idea of jazz, Johanna Elina builds up her own universe questioning the idioms of the already known. Sigur Ros producer Birgir Jon Birgisson provides mixing for her second album “Belonging”.

Belonging will be out on 13th May in Finland and Estonia via Eclipse Music. Danish label DME will release the album in the Autumn in Denmark, UK and other territories.

“With her own group “Johanna Elina” she released her first solo album 2011 and is now about to release the second one. Inspiration for music is drawn from the intimate, personal experiences, exploring the circle of life – birth and death, alienation and travel towards “Belonging.” She’s discovering the new studio techniques and post production, and the mixture of analog synths, drums and guitar with big respect for the melodies is the core of this album. Johanna travelled to Island to finish up the work at the Sundlaugin studio with Birgir Jon Birgisson, who’s also known as being the producer/ sound engineer of Sigur Ros.”

26/04/16: Bent Knee release first single from new album

Bent Knee who recently announced the release of their latest studio album, Say So, due on 20th May 2016 through Cuneiform Records, have now issued the first single, available through Bandcamp as a high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more, for thoise pre-ordering.

Earlier this month the band issued a teaser video of the track, Leak Water, (see below).

“Boston’s Bent Knee proudly occupy the grey area where baroque pop, rock, and the avant-garde meet, but even they are sometimes caught off guard by their intricately woven, surrealist stylings. The element of surprise and desire to fuse disparate sounds was felt throughout their sophomore record, 2014’s well-received “Shiny Eyed Babies”. It shines through even brighter on follow-up album “Say So”, due out May 20th through new label home Cuneiform.”

25/04/16: The Jelly Jam release second video from forthcoming album

The Jelly Jam revealed earlier this month that they would be releasing their fourth album, Profit, on 27th May through the Mascot Label Group. The band featuring Ty Tabor (King’s X), John Myung (Dream Theater) and Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs/Winger) previously issued Care – which can be found at the bottom of this page.

“Stain On The Sun is the second chapter of the Prophet’s journey. He recognizes that mundane life and it’s redundancy can consume a person’s world to such a degree that it becomes difficult to think about things outside of one’s own existence. He asks a single question…” – Ty Tabor

25/04/16: Rob Reed releases Marimba single taken from forthcoming album

Rob Reed previews Marimba video. The four track single, released through Tigermoth Records, is available through his Bandcamp Page.

“There are four mixes of the track each mix has a completely different take on the track. The Chimpan A remix is very modern and really powerful, the orchestral mix by Ryan Yard is dark and atmospheric, and the piano version is stripped back and hopefully shows the melody at its best.”

“Its always hard to now how to promote an album made up of two 20 minute pieces. Ideally it needs to be listened to as a whole. This section, which I always called “Marimba”, I thought would work as stand alone section. It features Simon Phillips on drums, and the chants of Synergy Vocals.”

Ventiquattro Fotogrammi al Secondo (Twenty-four Fames Per Second) is the first studio album from Il Riso Degli Stolti, scheduled for release on 20th May 2016.

Musically the original ideas were based around an acoustic guitar core, voice, piano and cello, later fleshed out with a rhythm section “and with the expressiveness of an organic chamber orchestral sections”. 23/04/16: The Fringe release the briefest of album teasers

Nick D’Virgilio, Randy McStine and Jonas Reingold, collectively The Fringe, will release their eponymous debut album sometime in late May, early June 2016. The band, who will play at this year’s ROSFest 2016 event, revealed that they will have the official CD release party at the festival.

“In October 2013, Nick D’Virgilio, Randy McStine, and Jonas Reingold arrived in Poland to perform a pair of shows together as The Nick D’Virgilio Trio. The three had previously been involved in different projects with one another, but this was a new experience. With only two brief rehearsals, the group quickly locked in to the complex music chosen for the shows. After the performances, it was clear that the trio shared a unique chemistry both on and off stage, and some preliminary plans were made to reconvene in the new year.”

22/04/16: Gryphon announce that Richard Harvey is to left the band

In an announcement on their Facebook Page, Gryphon reveal that Richard Harvey will no longer be part of Gryphon.

Richard Harvey“To our fans, friends and all who have continued to support us over the years, it is with deep regret and great sadness that we have to announce that Richard Harvey will no longer be able to continue as a member of Gryphon. Richard has considered his situation very carefully and his current and future commitments to touring, film and composition work plus the considerable time contribution to his charity, The MAE Foundation, make it impossible for him to dedicate the time needed to continue as part of the band. This decision has not been an easy one for him and we would like to thank him for all his hard work and major contribution to the band over the years and of course we wish him much success in whatever he does in the future.

The remaining members of the band, Graeme Taylor, Brian Gulland, Dave Oberle and Graham Preskett have decided, whilst it will be extremely difficult to replace Richard, that Gryphon will continue. To this end a statement will be released shortly.”

22/04/16: Machines Dream release first single from forthcoming album

22/04/16: New album release from Mike Kershaw due in May

Mike Kershaw - What Lies BeneathBad Elephant Music will release the latest album by Mike Kershaw, What Lies Beneath, on 27th May 2016. For this latest release Mike has gathered an impressive list of guest musicians including – Gareth Cole, Leo Koperdraat & Frank Urbaniak (Fractal Mirror), Rohan Jordan-Shah, Joshua Leibowitz (Leibowitz), Stuart Stephens (Whitewater), Tom Slatter and more…

“Blending strong textures with powerful lyrics, Mike’s haunting music can perhaps best be described as ‘atmospheric progressive rock’ but ever the iconoclast he regards this as a framework rather than a prison, and very simply takes the music where it needs to go.”

21/04/16: Ergo release a new music video for Yet but

Brooklyn Artist Alex Barry has teamed up with Brett Sroka to create this video for “Yet but” from Ergo’s upcoming album ‘As Subtle As Tomorrow’ (Cuneiform Records). Barry created every image in the video by hand.

“Inspired by the stark intensity and hymn-like clarity of the Emily Dickinson poem it’s named after, As subtle as tomorrow is a suite of pieces in which overlapping melodies, motifs and improvisations played by the acoustic ensemble are transformed into electronic elements of the music in real time. With pianist Sam Harris, drummer Shawn Baltazor, and Brett Sroka on trombone and computer, Ergo draws on the spirit of the avant-garde, inflections of minimalism and computer electro-acoustic techniques, to sow a sound unique in modern jazz.”

As Subtle As Tomorrow will be released on Tuesday 26th April 2016.

As the limit of our perceptions break down, the underlying nature of reality is revealed in a crescendo of colour and motion, utilising a fusion of time-lapse photography, animation, CGI and live action.”

Se Delan has launched their first video for the track ‘Shadowbox(ers)’ from their forthcoming sophomore album, Drifter, due for release via Kscope on 29th April 2016

On the video Se Delan vocalist Belinda Kordic comments: “Regarding the choice of director…We just loved Philippe’s old school animation and his wacky ideas. We were secretly hoping for a pitch from an animator and the crazier the better. Didn’t look too promising if we may say so ourselves. but then … there he was. He was right up our alley. Shadowbox(ers), one could say covers the old cliché “good vs evil”…within your own ball court”.

Commenting on the video the band said: “Ladies and Gents, here´s the brand new video clip for the song ´GETAWAY´. It was great fun to work with German actor Ralf Richter (Bang Boom Bang, Das Boot, etc), who played in a lot of cool movies which we really like and which we grew up to. We are big fans of movies from the 80ties and you might get a taste of that in the clip. The video shoot was fun and as you can see in the video, it was probably more fun for him than for us, haha. ´Getaway´ is the opening track on „TRIPS“ and we can´t wait to play it live. Tell all your friends!”

“Over the last few years I have performed on many tracks as a ‘guest’ but never before has anybody put some of the best of those I played on into a compilation. It’s always challenging to be involved in tracks of other people’s music and other people’s arrangements as it often makes you think and play differently and certainly on many of these tracks I play in quite an unexpected way, but there again, much of my life has been pretty unexpected anyway!” – Rick Wakeman.

13/04/16: Airbag to release fourth album in June

Norway’s Airbag will release their latest album, Disconnected, through Karisma Records on 10th June 2016. The band’s fourth studio album is the follow-up to the bands well received The Greatest Show on Earth (2013). Featuring six songs with a common theme of alienation between the individual and society, Disconnected was recorded with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes and produced by Airbag vocalist Asle Tostrup and guitarist Bjørn Riis.

Airbag 2016

The album features six songs with a common theme running through them. From the opening track, ‘Killer’, to the thirteen-minute long title track, the listener is taken on a sonic journey of lush soundscapes and arrangements, underlined by soaring guitars and soulful vocals. Airbag guitarist Bjørn Riis comments:

“The early demos for Disconnected was written during a couple of months in late 2014. The idea and inspiration for most of the lyrics, and the title track in particular, came from me realising that I had to make some changes in my life. I was tired of the daily routine, working 9-5 in an office doing basically nothing and never having enough time for my family and music. I took a year off and started writing for the album.”

Haken release The Endless Knot video taken from their forthcoming Affinity album – to be released through InsideOut Music on 29th April 2016.

The band had this to say: “The Endless Knot explores ideas of human survival instinct and the power of unity in the face of extinction. Musically, you could say this is new territory for us as we’ve taken sounds from dance and electronica music and blended them with our own brand of rock/metal. The end result hopefully gives the song a nice and upbeat, energetic feel. The visuals loosely follow the life-cycle of a star and Miles Skarin at Crystal Spotlight did an awesome job with the animation on this one!”

Rick Wakeman - JTTCOTERick Wakeman says: “The wonderful thing about live recordings is that they are a true time capsule of the music of the moment. Recording it was fraught with problems and so when the finished album was finally mixed, with, I hasten to add, no corrections as firstly there was no separation in the tracks and also I didn’t want to get everybody back into the studio as for me, in spite of the mistakes there was so much energy, life and spine tingling moments that would have been lost had we tried to “repair” certain areas. Mastering was also at a pretty basic stage back in 1974 compared to now and the new mastering that has been done is quite magnificent and is chalk and cheese compared to the original which is such a giant step forward.”

Writing about growing up, music, the creative process and connection between personal development and ‘career’ made me think about a lot of other stuff, too. Like the positive and negative experiences of making different albums, and how each one affected me mentally, physically and emotionally. It’s all here, though, from my childhood to working with Steve Vai, forming Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Project, to Casualties of Cool and finding myself only half there.”

05/04/16: Bent Knee announce new album and premiere Leak Water video

Bent Knee announce the release of their latest studio album, Say So, out on 20th May 2016 through Cuneiform Records. By way of a teaser the band released a video of the track, Leak Water, premiered through Consequence Of Sound.

02/04/16: Self titled release from Astarta/Edwin due this month

Colin Edwin has completed a full length album with Ukrainian female vocal duo Astarta, and below is the official video for the track “Oy U Lisi” (In the Forest). The eponymously titled Astarta/Edwin album draws heavily on Eastern European and Ukrainian folk themes and also features contributions from guitarist Jon Durant, King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto and violinist Steve Bingham (No-Man).

Colin explains “Whilst working on the material, I purposely stayed away from attempting any sort of interpretation of the lyrics, instead remaining in wilful ignorance of the actual lyrical content. The Ukrainian language remains a mystery to me, so my focus was always on supporting the twin vocals and trying to create a sympathetic musical content to wrap around and highlight them. It’s really not necessary to understand the words to grasp the emotional intention.”

Colin concludes “I hope we are able to present something positive, energizing and beautiful. This album would not exist without the generosity, warmth, energy, creativity and humour from all the Ukrainian people I have met, and the rich culture we have drawn from and shaped together in our own way.”
