Finnish keyboard player and composer Juha Kujanpää returns with a new album, Kultasiipi – Goldwing, the follow up to the well received Kivenpyörittäjä (2013) – read TPA’s thoughts HERE.

“After winning over the ears of the public and critics alike with his first album “Tales and Travels” Juha Kujanpää continues in the footsteps of Mike Oldfield, Pekka Pohjola and early Genesis with his unique blend of symphonic prog rock and Finnish folk music. “Goldwing”, his second album, is perhaps slightly more progressive than its predecessor, but all of the outstanding musicianship and melodic beauty is still there, and so are the folk music influences.”

19/10/15: Tim Bowness releases Sing To Me video

Tim Bowness releases Sing To Me video taken from his third solo album, Stupid Things That Mean The World, released in July – read TPA’s review HERE.

Tim comments: “Originally a no-man demo called Best Boy Electric, I heard this for the first time in over 20 years when Steven Wilson sent it to me in October 2014 for consideration for the reissue of no-man’s Lost Songs album.

I’d completely forgotten the song, and on hearing it again couldn’t believe we’d not pursued it further. The no-man version was skeletal with an improvised, incomplete lyric. It also featured a bizarre coda in 7/8 featuring me doing uncharacteristic choking and screaming noises as SW randomly pounced on a Hammond Organ like a frenzied toddler. It was written soon after Flowermouth had been released in the Summer of 1994. In retrospect, I can only guess that the idea was dropped as it was something that didn’t fit our idea of where we wanted to take no-man on the band’s next album. Regardless of the reason, it was quickly abandoned.

On re-hearing the song in 2014, it immediately felt special to me and I knew where I’d like to take it musically. A new lyric was written as were a couple of new instrumental themes. The demented 7/8 coda was ditched (though attempted) and Stephen Bennett suggested doubling the first half of the song, which led to my demand for epic Bearpark and Phoebe solos (transforming them into Classic Rock ‘foot on the monitor’ titans!).One of my favourite songs on the album, it reminds me of aspects of the early no-man that I loved, while also feeling very much a part of the music I’m currently making.”

15/10/15: Oslo’s Progtober Festival draws closer

Progtober 2015 - Oslo

Three of Oslo’s finest, Pymlico, Gentle Knife and Panzerpappa will be appearing at Progtober on 23rd October 2015 held at Oslo’s Gamla Concert Hall…

PYMLICO‘s music is a mix of progressive rock, fusion, world-, ambient-, film- and pop music – a melodic, complex and dynamic sound with layers of keyboards and guitars. Pymlico’s quest is to prove that music in 2015 does not have to be fronted by a singer and that instrumental music is not something obscure from the 1970s. This has so far led to three album releases: Inspirations (2011), Directions (2012) and Guiding Light (2014).

GENTLE KNIFE is a brand new Norwegian prog band with 10 members. The band sports guitars, bass, keys, percussions, brass and woodwinds, vocals and sound effects. Their eponymous debut album, Gentle Knife (2015) is an 8-part suite recounting the tale of an adventurer’s unfortunate demise in an alluring forest.

PANZERPAPPA is a Norwegian instrumental avant/progressive rock group with an inventive and playful sound – “Progressive Rock with a friendly face”. Panzerpappa is at once reminiscent of inspirational precursors such as Samla Mammas Manna, King Crimson, Henry Cow, Univers Zero and Frank Zappa, while at the same time sounding unmistakably like …themselves! Panzerpappa has released 5 albums: Passer Gullfisk (2000), Hulemysteriet (2002), Farlig Vandring (2004), Koralrevens Klagesang (2006) and Astromalist (2012).

“Another Life is John Hackett’s long awaited new rock album and is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Checking Out of London (released in 2005). On his new record John Hackett is joined by brother Steve Hackett, ex-Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips and prog legend Nick Magnus to create an evocative musical landscape of powerful rock songs and rich melodies.”

08/10/15: Roger Hodgson adds second UK date in 2016

With the Albert Hall concert sold out Roger Hodgson announces another UK date on 28th April 2016 at London’s Palladium Theater.

Roger comments, “With the Albert Hall now sold out, I’m thrilled that we could add a second London show at the iconic Palladium. Being a Brit, the Palladium brings back many memories and I look forward to playing on that legendary stage. Fans who have written to me hoping to hear some of my songs from Supertramp days won’t be disappointed. From School to Breakfast in America to The Logical Song and Fool’s Overture, and many more, I’ll be celebrating the songs that I wrote on my life journey – many of which were inspired by my English upbringing. I’m very glad my UK fans are getting another opportunity to have ‘Breakfast’ with me.”

06/10/15: Billy Sherwood releases first video from Citizen

Ahead of the release of Billy Sherwood‘s latest studio album, Citizen, available through Frontiers Records on 6th November 2015, comes the track No Mans Land.

“CITIZEN is Billy’s eighth album of new material, though he sees this as a group effort, “While I’ve created a lot of this record myself I couldn’t have done it without the amazing talents brought to bear by all the great artists who participated. So I feel it’s much more of a collective effort than a solo album. It’s my desire to take this production onto the stage and some of these amazing artists can help bring this concept to life.”

“Each song places the Citizen into a unique set of circumstances where decisions are made that have serious personal and global consequences. In the song “No Man’s Land” (featuring Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs/Kansas guitarist Steve Morse) the Citizen appears as a World War I trench runner who passes the message along to the troops that it’s time to attack; the Citizen remains behind and is, ultimately, the only survivor. “Empire” (with lead vocals by Alan Parsons & violin from Jerry Goodman of the Flock, Dixie Dregs, Mahavishnu Orchestra) finds the Citizen as a conscript legionnaire in the final days of the Roman Empire. “Just Galileo and Me” (sung by Colin Moulding singer/bassist of XTC) shows the Citizen as a protective friend to Galileo, trying to tell the astronomer that he should not tell people that the earth is not flat or he will be labelled as a heretic.”

06/10/15: Steven Wilson’s expanded series of Jethro Tull albums continues

Jethro Tull - Too Old To Rock’n’Roll:Too Young To DieFrom Steven’s Facebook Page: “Parlophone Records have announced the next in the series of expanded Jethro Tull 40th anniversary sets for release on 27th November, this time for 1976 album “Too Old To Rock’n’Roll: Too Young to Die”. “The TV Special Edition” contains my remixes in stereo and 5.1 surround sound. As with the previous three releases in the series, it consists of 2 CDs and 2 DVDs. CD1 contains a 2015 remix of a version of the album re-recorded for a TV special, and remixes of the 5 album multitrack masters that could be located (alas 5 could not). CD2 consists of a complete flat transfer of the original stereo mix, and 8 bonus tracks, 7 of which are 2015 remixes. Among these are 2 previously unheard songs; Salamander’s Ragtime (completely unrelated to album track Salamander), and Commercial Traveller. A further previously announced out-take Advertising Man was ultimately found to be not sufficiently complete to merit inclusion.

DVD1 features the TV special broadcast in full, making it’s commercial debut and with the remixed soundtrack in high res stereo and 5.1 surround sound. The 5 album track remixes are also included in 5.1 surround sound and high resolution stereo. DVD2 features the bonus tracks in high res audio, 4 also in 5.1 surround sound, and flat transfers of the original stereo and quadraphonic mixes.

As with all of the Tull deluxe editions, this is a limited run, presented in a case-bound DVD book that includes an 80-page booklet with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, plus rare and unseen photographs.

02/10/15: Iamthemorning reveal 5/4 from forthcoming live release

“Taken from their House Of Arts live release which will be out at the end of October.

“From the House Of Arts was recorded during our Belighted release concert in Moscow at the 31st October 2014. A lot of musicians helped us, so the recording sounds rather heavy at times. We thought it might be a good idea to release something like that, because we will hardly ever be able to go and play for the people in Europe as 8-members band. Our first small EU tour is coming in October, and we’ll only able to take our string players with us.”

01/10/15: The Room to release new album in November

Bad Elephant Music announce that The Room‘s new album, Beyond The Gates Of Bedlam, will be released on 20th November 2015.

The band have invested major time and energy in this impressive release, taking accepted AOR and melodic rock norms and ripping them up to start afresh with a more focused and intense take on the genre. Progressive rock elements – something of a hallmark for The Room – are still here in abundance, ensuring this release will appeal to old and new fans alike.

The 10-track album, including a remixed version of 2015 single Carrie, was recorded at Platform Studios in Berkshire under the auspices of Damon Sawyer, with striking artwork designed by The Room’s guitarist, Steve Anderson.

The Room 2015

There is a rich musical heritage at the heart of The Room’s progressive tinged rock – a combination of impressive musicianship, catchy hooks and thought-provoking lyrics. Formed late in 2010, the band performed four hugely successful launch shows including a support slot for the legendary Wishbone Ash.

The release of their acclaimed debut album, ‘Open Fire’, followed in December 2012. Steve Anderson (guitar), Steve Checkley (keyboards), Andy Rowe (bass) and Martin Wilson (vocals) were joined by drummer Chris York in 2013, who replaced original sticksman Andrew Rae.

Having joined Bad Elephant Music earlier this year and following the launch of the digital single ‘Carrie’ in June, the guys have since been hard at work on their sophomore release.

01/10/15: Sunn O))) to release brand new studio album, Kannon, in December 2015

Sunn O)))Composed in the aftershadow of SUNN O)))‘s most recent successes in immersive collaboration — the group having worked with Scott Walker on Soused, and Ulver on Terrestrials in 2013 and 2014 — and also from the broad and influential wake of their epitomic Monoliths & Dimensions, Kannon emerged both independently as a conceptual entity and with roots in the legacies of those projects, yet was fully realized years later in 2015. The album consists of three pieces of a triadic whole: “Kannon 1, 2 and 3.”

The album celebrates many SUNN O))) traditions; Kannon was recorded and mixed with SUNN O)))’s close colleague and co-producer Randall Dunn in Seattle, in Studio Litho, Aleph and Avast!, and the LP includes performances by long term allies and collaborators Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, and Steve Moore to name a few. At the core, the composition centers around the dynamic and intense guitar and bass interplay of SUNN O)))’s founders: Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson.

Kannon will be available on gatefold LP, CD and digital formats worldwide on December 4th, with a limited number of white vinyl available on Black Friday RSD, Friday, November 27th.

01/10/15: Roger Waters’ The Wall [DVD, Blu-ray] set for November release

Just announced, on the day following the worldwide screening in selected cinemas of Roger Waters The Wall for one night only, is the long-awaiting home release of the movie. It is being released as a digital download, as a DVD, a Blu-ray, and a 2-disc Blu-ray special edition, on November 16th, 2015. The physical editions are now available to order through selected outlets, and we have details below of what each edition contains.

There is also an additional release: an album of the Roger Waters The Wall soundtrack is set for release later this year (although no exact date is specified) via Sony Music. We suspect that this will be the concert itself, rather than the film soundtrack which of course is intercut with Roger’s moving road trip.

Roger Waters The WallFor those who weren’t able to see it last night, Roger Waters The Wall, written and directed by Roger Waters and Sean Evans combines an immersive and undeniably epic concert experience of the classic Pink Floyd album, a road movie of Waters’ reckoning with the past, and an anti-war protest film, highlighting the human cost of conflict. Roger said: “I’m glad that we have an opportunity to share the film with people on a wider scale. It has had a deep effect on my life; and I’m not the only one. This release provides an opportunity to remember all of our fallen loved ones.”

Roger Waters The Wall was shot during his sold out 2010-13 world tour. Seen by over 4 million fans at 219 shows over a period of three years, the show was the highest grossing tour by any solo artist in history. The film, shot in 4k and mixed in Dolby Atmos, features concert footage from this incredible tour – a reminder of just how good the production was.

Beyond the music, the film follows Roger Waters as he embarks on a deeply personal pilgrimage and reflects on the impact of war with his own family. Woven throughout the film, Waters travels to France to the site where his grandfather is buried, and Italy to a memorial for his father – both lost to war. The journey offers a revealing, candid portrait of a man who is passionately and unapologetically anti-war.

The DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download releases feature bonus footage of Roger Waters visiting the grave of poet and soldier, Frank Thompson, who lost his life during the Second World War. The 2-disc Blu-Ray Special Edition features over 95 minutes of bonus footage, including the unforgettable moment in May 2011 when Roger Waters was joined on stage by David Gilmour and Nick Mason at London’s O2 Arena in a performance of Comfortably Numb and Outside The Wall (Nick only appearing on the latter), as well as driving outtakes from the road movie, art cards, a poster and booklet.
