Kingcrow“Following the success of their In Crescendo album released through Sensory in February 2014, KINGCROW returns this year with Eidos, a new conceptual album about choices, consequences, dealing with regret and disillusion. After their album, Phlegethon, dealt with childhood, and In Crescendo about the end of youth, Eidos can be considered the third part of a trilogy about the path of life. Musically it sees the band exploring new territories and pushing the extremes of its complex soundscape with a darker atmosphere and a more progressive attitude.

With over an hour of new material, Eidos is the next logical progression in the evolution of KINGCROW, and will open the next doorway for what lies in wait for them next.”

12/04/15: Galahad to release special 30th Anniversary album
Galahad 30In order to celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary Galahad will be releasing a historical double CD retrospective with a twist, the twist being that ten of the tracks included are brand new re-recorded versions of old Galahad songs, some dating back to 1985, the year the band formed, including one thirty year old track (City of Freedom) which has never been recorded before!

Hopefully, this collection is a fair representation of the Galahad cannon and will appeal to existing fans of the band and will also, perhaps, act as a taster to those yet to dip their toes in the world of Galahad music.

10/04/15: Colin Edwin & Pat Mastelotto’s O.R.k. debut album release
Drawing on the singular talents of vocalist and producer Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (Berserk!, Obake), innovative guitarist Carmelo Pipitone (Marta sui Tubi) and internationally renowned musicians Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson) and Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) O.R.k is an intriguing collaborative album which defies easy categorization yet remains gratifyingly accessible. The debut album fuses primordial energy with playful acoustic psychedelia and precise math rock, but with an added seasoning of deep ambient electronica. Imposing, but also encompassing a hypnotic, powerful beauty, O.R.k. is a forward thinking, mischievous slap around the head of complacency, and a captivating listen from start to finish.

The band have released the first of two videos from the album – Pyre:

10/04/15: Progress Records sign Elephant Plaza
Featuring former Magic Pie members Gilbert Marshall and John Kamphaug – Elephant Plaza will release their debut album in the autumn through Sweden’s Progress Records label. The release will also feature guest appearances including current lead singer of Magic Pie – Eirikur Hauksson.

“The debut album naturally houses lots of influences found in 70´s progressive rock , along with influences from rock bands of both the 70´s era and the modern prog rock scene, offering the makings of a wide musical experience with great instrumentalists and true emotional musical engagement. The songs are solidly built on strong harmonic compositions, intimate lyrics and good musical “stories”.” SOURCE: Progress Records.

09/04/15: Debut album release from Mandala
Mandala’s debut album, ‘Midnight Twilight’, is an exhilarating combination of Western and Eastern folk music, mixed with heavier forms of progressive rock, all wrapped in an early-seventies glow.

Mandala was formed in London in 1997, by Rhys Marsh (voice, guitar), Francis Booth (bass) and Will Spurling (drums). After playing hundreds of concerts across Europe and North America, though never recording an album, they disbanded in 2006.

Now, they’re back together and are ready to present their debut album, featuring songs written during their first time around, between 1997—2005, and recorded in 2014. The main tracks were recorded live in the studio, in Autumnsongs Recording Studio in Norway, with overdubs being added both there and in London.

As soon as you push the play button, the blistering energy explodes from the speakers. This is what they were known and loved for, and this is exactly what they captured on tape. It’s not often that a debut album could’ve been a greatest hits album, but having played these songs to hundreds of audiences, this is what ‘Midnight Twilight’ is set to become to those who’ve followed the band since its inception.

This album has been eighteen years in the making. We hope you agree that it’s been worth the wait. Midnight Twilight is released through Autumnsongs Records on 4th May (UK via Burning Shed & Europe) | 5th May (North America & R.O.W.) SOURCE: We Do Band Stuff

As reported in Prog magazine: “It is an instrumental, bluesy, prog-jazz album. The lineup is myself on saxophone and flutes, Nic France on drums, Mike Outram on guitars and Pete Whittaker on Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes.”

“The studio sessions were fantastic and everyone played great. We have about 55 mins of music and it is really varied and both exciting and atmospheric. I’ve written most of the music, and there’s an instrumental version of a track I co-wrote with Andy Tillison – the title track from the Tangent album A Place In The Queue.” Source: Theo Travis.

Following on from the release of Steve Hackett’s latest solo album, Wolflight, at the end of March – today sees the release of the video for the track Love Song To A Vampire. You can read the TPA review of the Wolflight album HERE.

Steve had this to say about the track: “The ‘Love Song to a Vampire’ video was directed by Paul Gosling whose filming I was impressed by. Most of the film was shot in the historic and atmospheric city of Leicester. Paul was keen to highlight the combination of Gothic imagery with the portrayal of an abusive relationship implicit in the song. We discussed the ideas together… The transformation from the glamour that lures the victim to the final destructive hold.”

Dance Me This is due for release on 1st June 2015

The album also showcases two members of Porcupine Tree, Gavin Harrison on drums and Richard Barbieri on keyboards and synthesizers. All songs on the album were written, performed and produced by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dale Simmons.

“Two and half years in the making Radio Silence was completed in February of this year. The album’s musical style reflects progressive rock icons of the past while staying firmly rooted in the modern art rock genre. There is a broad range of influences in the music, but echoes of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour can be heard in several of the album’s tracks.”

01/04/15: King Crimson tour support act will be: King Crimson – unplugged!
King Crimson posterIn addition to Crimso playing a 20 minute set of KC-related material on acoustic instruments at each of the dates already announced, the group are also also to make low-key acoustic only appearance at this year’s Green Man Festival, as a warm-up for the KC tour proper later that month.

This perhaps surprising announcement comes after an equipment failure at last week’s full rehearsals. While the electrics were being fixed, Fripp and Jakszyk reverted to acoustic instruments in order to carry on their work. “We turned a disadvantage into an advantage” comments Fripp in his April 1st dairy published later today.

There’s no indication yet as to which numbers will be covered but the phrase “KC-related” opens up the possibility of Guitar Craft repertoire as well as solo material from Jakszyk and Rieflin also under consideration.
