Iona and Dave Bainbridge updates

Article by:

In this article we bring updates on the new Iona, Edge Of The World/Live In Europe, which is nearing the final stages and news that Dave Bainbridge’s solo album is well under way…

Although no track listing is available at present, Iona will shortly be releasing their first full-length live recording in 9 years. Recorded last year and during their Another Realm Tour, the live album features tracks from various shows across the UK & The Netherlands. Although no final release date has been announced yet, pre-order is available through Iona’s website.

In a post yesterday Dave Bainbridge had this to say about his progress:

…”several things to update you on! The most exciting is that a week on Wednesday (and maybe some of Thursday week) I’ll be recording the lead male vocal tracks on the album! I’m very pleased to announce that doing the singing (on 4 tracks) will be Damian Wilson. Damian has a fantastic and versatile voice which I think will be perfect for the tracks. Some of you may know him from his work with the bands Threshold and Maiden United or with his own Damian Wilson band. He’s also toured and recorded with many other artists, including Rick Wakeman and Aryeon and was the lead role of Jean Valjean in the touring production of Les Miserables. Damian has a classic rock voice, sometimes (to my ears) a little reminiscent of Led Zeppelin era Robert Plant, and, like Plant, can also sound wonderful singing softly. Damian will be heading up north to my studio and I’m really looking forward to working with him.

Since my last update, Todd Reynolds, an amazing violinist from New York has added some superb solo violin parts to two of the albums epic tracks (Celestial Fire and For Such a Time as This), bringing that Jean-Luc Ponty / Mahavishnu Orchestra type electric violin vibe I was looking for.

Randy George has finished all the bass parts for the album now, finishing off with a great part on the track now called ‘See What I see’, along with some earth shaking Taurus bass pedals on the album’s concluding track ‘On The Edge of Glory’.

The lyrics are beginning to come together as I continue to send and receive emails to/from my friends David and Yvonne Lyon.

Today I also sent string parts for 2 more tracks to Frank, to add his multi-layered magic.

Once Damian’s parts are down I’ll be concentrating on recording the remaining female vocal parts (more on this soon!) and my own remaining keys / guitars.

More news soon – and I’ll try and remember to take a few photos when Damian is up in the studio!”
