31/03/2019: Gösta Berlings Saga Release Ornament and Crime Single and Announce Roadburn Festival Appearance

Swedish progressive rock instrumentalists Gösta Berlings Saga have released a new digital single of the non-album track Ornament and Crime as part of the continuing promotion of their 5th studio album Et Ex, which came out with InsideOutMusic last October.

Commetning on the track, GBS say:
The basic idea for the song ‘Ornament and Crime‘ was written over 10 years ago but never really made it to tape. For the ‘ET EX‘ recording we tried some new ideas around the song and it turned out really good. The song did not find its place on the album mostly due to LP length constraints but it is now instead a perfectly weird instrumental smash hit for Spring 2019.”

The band are also set to appear at Roadburn Festival, taking place from the 11th April – 14th April 2019 in Tilburg, The Netherlands. The band is part of “The Burning Darkness“ event, curated by At The Gates/Disfear frontman Tomas Lindberg.

Live Shows:
12th April 2019 – Tilburg, The Netherlands – 013 / Roadburn Festival
9th August 2019 – Oslo, Norway – Oslo Kulturhus / Øya Nights
More dates to be announced soon.

Gösta Berlings Saga Are:
Alexander Skepp – Drums & Percussion
David Lundberg – Fender Rhodes, Mellotron & Synthesizers
Gabriel Tapper – Bass Guitar & Moog Taurus
Rasmus Booberg – Guitars & Synthesizers

30/03/2019: Phoenix Again release Friends of Spirit

Italian band Phoenix Again have released their fourth studio album Friends of Spirit today, featuring artwork by Mitsuyasu Hatakeda. The album is available from Bandcamp (https://phoenixagain.bandcamp.com/album/friends-of-spirit-2) in both digital and CD format.

The release will be accompanied by a launch concert at “La Casa di Alex” comprising of two different sets: the first part of the concert will be an unplugged acoustic set; the second set will be full electric with a mixture from previous releases.

Commenting on their latest release the band say: “This last work can be defined as semi-acoustic, precisely because, in addition to being played mainly (but not exclusively) with acoustic instruments, it is full of varied atmospheres and rhythms that have brought us perhaps far from the most scratchy and “rocking” sounds to which we have accustomed our supporters. It is fair to say that this Friends of Spirit, self-produced and available in future as a limited edition, is a work that we strongly wanted to complete, and with great enthusiasm. It is a record that we deeply feel “our” and, despite its diversity from the sounds of our previous albums, the 9 tracks contained in the album can easily go “arm in arm” with our rock compositions.
In our music (including the one already published) we like to show in fact the contents of our education and our musical journey, influences of our listenings as “young fans”. We are convinced that music must always end with “a nice surprise”.

Track List
1. Friends of Spirit 07:08
2. On the Melody 03:50
3. Pasión 04:52
4. Habanera 04:06
5. Mediterranea 04:42
6. Free Ireland 04:18
7. Alma Española 03:22
8. Eppur Si Muore 06:10
9. Vicino A Te 03:18

The Band
Sergio Lorandi: guitars and irish bouzouki
Marco Lorandi: guitars
Andrea Piccinelli: keyboards
Antonio Lorandi: bass guitar
Giorgio Lorandi: percussions and vocals

26/03/2019: EppyFest 8 details announced

Following the seven successful EppyFests from 2012 to 2018, this year the festival is back to a Saturday evening event at a new venue.

“Our headliner is Tim Burness and his band – Tim is a Brighton-based UK musician who has been recording & performing since the early 1980s. Interconnected, his latest album, was released on 12th November, 2018. As with Tim’s previous work, the album features a wide range of musical styles – from progressive rock to pop with touches of ambient electronica. The lyrics cover a range of interconnected themes – from the personal to the political to the spiritual.

Before Tim, we warmly welcome back Sanguine Hum (acoustic), the duo version of the band, consisting of Matt Baber and Joff Winks. If you were at EppyFest last year you’ll know they wowed everyone with a sensational performance. This year they’ll be playing more new material.

We’re also very happy to be welcoming back gifted singer, songwriter & guitarist Marvin B Naylor to EppyFest. Last time he played EppyFest he was performing on his own but we’re thrilled to announce that this time he’ll be joined by Rebsie Fairholm, who specialises in dark haunting psych-folk, inspired by the English landscape. Their duo performance will combine material from both their back catalogues.

And we’re also excited to announce Longstone on the bill, an experimental, electronic music collective formed in 1996 in Cheltenham, coalescing around the core duo of Mike Ward and Mike Cross. With influences ranging from Kraftwerk to My Bloody Valentine, & from Aphex Twin to Jethro Tull, you know you can expect the unexpected.

Eppyfest 8 takes place on 20th July 2019 at Cheltenham’s Smokey Joe’s. Ticket details can be found HERE on the Eppyfest website.

24/03/2019: Djam Karet Announce New Album A Sky Full Of Stars For A Roof For April 2019 Release

Djam Karet have completed recording their 19th album A Sky Full of Stars for a Roof and is due for release on 15th April 2019. Originally formed in 1984, the new album is a celebration of the band’s 35 years together and features all four original members. The new release combines analog and modular synthesizers with numerous acoustic instruments including harmonium, dilruba, mbira, udu and other exotic instruments. In order to create a more lively and dynamic sound, no compression was used in the mixing of the album.

Chuck Oken, jr. comments: “We were talking about the new album, and we thought it would be interesting to hear a mix of one of the songs with most of the electronic synthesizers removed, in order to create an increased focus on the acoustic instruments. When we listened back, we really liked what we heard, and so we applied that concept to the whole record, resulting in the new Re-Mix album titled “Specter of Twilight”. This album has an even stronger Cinematic and Soundtrack feel to it. Strange and unusual, this unique album is filled with wondrous tones and strange visions, and is a real treat for the ears. And because of the success of that project, we decided to make another Re-Mix album titled “On The Third Day Arrived The Crow” where we removed all of the acoustic instruments and drums & bass, creating a greater focus on the remaining synthesizers and electronic elements of our album.”

Featured guest musicians include Micah Nelson (from Neil Young’s band) on charango, Todd Montgomery (Fernwood) on sitar, Mark Cook (Herd Of Instinct) on fretless guitar and bass, and others.

Track Listing
1. Beyond The Frontier
2. Long Ride To Eden
3. West Coast
4. A Sky Full Of Stars For A Roof
5. Dust In The Sun
6. On The Third Day Arrived The Crow
7. Specter Of Twilight

21/03/2019: John Mitchell Releases Ancient Ascendant Video From new Lonely Robot Album Under Stars

Ancient Ascendant is the first track of the new Lonely Robot album Under Stars and today has seen the release of the first video. John comments: “Ancient Ascendant is a wry poke at and indeed musical equivalent of the famous ‘evolution of man’ picture. We may be evolutionary but we seem to be walking backwards into the swampy quagmire of a synthesized society. Maybe we can learn something from the simpler times and customs of our ancestors even if we can’t learn from their history. This was the first song I recorded for Under Stars and I had a ball recording it!

Featuring drums by long-time collaborator Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson), plus bass contributions from Steve Vantsis (Fish), Mitchell supplies all other instrumentation on the album. For John, the album is “the final part in the astronaut trilogy, and was recorded over an intensive month and a half period. This time I wanted to reference my love of 80’s synthwave pop a little more, so beware the 808! The title is derived from belief that we as humans spend far too much time not noticing the beauty around us and far too much time tethered to technology.

Under Stars will be released as a limited edition digipak CD (featuring 3 bonus tracks), gatefold 2LP + CD & as digital album.

Track-listing
1. Terminal Earth
2. Ancient Ascendant
3. Icarus

19/03/2019: Neal Morse Announces New Prog Musical Jesus Christ The Exorcist.

Neal Morse has announced a new progressive rock musical – Jesus Christ The Exorcist.  The new double album has taken a decade to create and features two hours of music that takes in the entirety of Morse’s eclectic musical history.

Citing influences such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, Morse explains: “It is completely diverse. There are touching ballads, rousing ensemble pieces, classical elements and dramatic Broadway musical type songs as well. It is really meant to be listened and experienced all the way through as you would a play or an opera. I hope that people will experience it in that way because I think that’s where they will really find the power in it. These songs and pieces of music were all written specifically for this project. I wrote the first draft in 2008 and 2009, I believe. Then, last year in preparation for a performance at MorseFest I rewrote the whole musical again. I couldn’t be happier with the final outcome and I am thrilled that it is coming out on Frontiers this June.

Contributions include vocalists and musicians such as Ted Leonard, Eric Gillette, Nick D’Virgilio, Randy George, Bill Hubauer, Matt Smith, Jake Livgren and others. The Musical had its live world premiere in 2018 and was performed by an all-star cast featuring Neal Morse (keys, guitar), Paul Bielatowicz (lead guitar), Bill Hubauer (keys), Randy George (bass) and Eric Gillette (drums). Featured vocalists included Ted Leonard (Spock’s Beard, Enchant), Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train, Spock’s Beard), Jake Livgren (Protokaw), Matt Smith (Theocracy) and Wil Morse. 18/03/2019: Dick Dale, the “King of Surf Rock” Passes Away.

Guitarist Dick Dale, well known for his song Misirlou which played during the opening credits to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, has died at the age of age 81. Dale had a long history of poor health but nevertheless continued playing up to his death.

His characteristic style was built around a fast picking technique on his Fender Stratocaster and inspired bands such as The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix. The BPI commented that Dale was “a great musician who created a brilliant and uniquely distinctive style and sound that will forever be his hallmark“.

Commenting on his own approach to music in 2015, he remarks; “Playing guitar was only a window in my life. I never practiced the guitar and when I’m done playing I just put it down. Music is like building a house. It’s like going out deep into the desert to see what nature is doing. It’s like painting, like Salvador Dali. I try to do that with my music, make it like a Salvador Dali painting.”

18/03/2019: Guitarist Bernie Tormé Passes Away at the Age of 66.

Guitarist Bernie Tormé passed away on 17th March 2019 at the age of 66, one day before his 67th birthday.

A statemnent from his family reads: “Bernie Tormé passed away peacefully on the 17th March 2019, one day short of his 67th birthday, surrounded by his family. He had been on life support for the past 4 weeks at a London hospital following post-flu complications. Bernie will be remembered for dedicating his life to his music for 5 decades. He will be sorely missed.”

Colleague and drummer Mik Gaffney confirmed the news:  “Something I hoped I would never have to write, the amazing, unmistakable guitar legend Bernie Torme has died. He passed away yesterday, surrounded by his loved ones.”

Tormé had been in hospital since the beginning of February with pneumonia, being placed on a ventilator on the 15th February when his condition failed to improve. The former Ozzie Osborne and Gillan guitarist released a solo album Shadowland last year and supported it with a headline UK tour in November and December.

14/03/2019: Daniel Tompkins Announces Solo Album Castles

Daniel Tompkins (TesseracT, White Moth Black Butterfly, Skyharbor) has announced the release of his debut solo album Castles via Kscope on 31st May 2019. The album explores the arc of personal relationships – tragic mistakes, misjudgements of character and victorious, passionate love.

Daniel explains: “Everyone has experiences that are relatable to one another in their romantic relationships. We make huge investments of trust and care and commitment into one another and sometimes they simply fail. In fact, most fail. That said, some survive, thrive and create incredible lifelong partnerships or at least important, long lasting love. But sometimes, we make massive misjudgements of character and the true nature of someone is always revealed over time. Sometimes tragic mistakes, physical or mental abuse, compulsion or addiction are an issue and create irreparable harm to relationships and lives, no matter how in love two people may be. This is the area where the most tragic outcomes occur. The album is somewhat cathartic lyrically but in other areas it explores amazing, victorious, passionate love. A lot of this story is told from the perspective of someone seeking that perfect partnership and the ultimate fulfilment of finding it.”

Castles is written & engineered by Tompkins alongside US producer Eddie Head (Haji’s Kitchen) and recorded at both the UK’s Celestial Sound Studio (Vocals) & The Color And The Sound Studios (Music) in the US, with mastering by Acle Kahney at 4D Sounds. The album has 13 tracks and will feature six alternative versions, with contributions from special guests Acle Kahney (TesseracT), Grammy-nominated Randy Slaugh (Periphery, Architects, Devin Townsend), Paul Ortiz (Zeta, Chimpspanner) and producer Dmitry Stepanov. Artwork is by Ani Artworks (www.aniartworks.org).

Castles will be released on CD, LP (180g black vinyl) and digital (pre-orders receive “Saved feat. Acle Kahney” as an instant download).

14/03/2019: Seven Steps to the Green Door Reveal Further Details About New Album The?Lie

German band Seven Steps to the Green Door have revealed further details about their new album THE?LIE. The release marks the second instalment of their concept trilogy THE?BOOK in which casts a critical eye over religious fanaticism.

George Andrade created a detailed and engaging lyric book out of Thoralf Koss’ story. To match the story line, the band invited contributions from some of the leading musicians of the contemporary prog to take on the roles of the characters and to perform the instrumental parts. British multi-instrumentalist and singer Pete Jones (Tiger Moth Tales, Camel, Francis Dunnery Band) delivers vocals as the “Father”; guitarist Luke Machin (including Maschine, The Tangent, Francis Dunnery Band, Damanek …) plays most guitar parts; Steve Unruh (Resistor, UPF, Samurai of Prog) and Jason Melidonie (Cytotoxin) adds violin and guitar solos.

The album is produced by Marek Arnold and mixed/mastered by Martin Schnella (Flaming Row, Melanie Mau & Martin Schnella, ssttgd) and will be released by Progressive Promotion Records on 30th April 2019. All pre-orders will feature the album, signed by Marek and Ulf, with an extensive lyric book of the story line. There will also be a limited edition of the album featuring a hand written and designed lyric book by George Andrade: only 30 copies of this item will be offered.

Andrade comments: “THE?LIE” is a new rock opera/concept album that I’ve co-written with the magnificent Seven Steps to the Green Door, the second album of a proposed trilogy**. It tells the story of a family intimately caught up in the fanatic actions of their religious leaders, their church “fathers”, and the unfolding tragedy that befalls them all, while having to reconcile their faith turned religion with the repercussions of those fanatic actions committed in their God’s name, and coming to terms with the divergent and symbiotic relationship of a faith’s moral authority with the political realities of administrating and growing any organized religion…  I think “THE?LIE” contains some of my best and most ambitious writing for music to date (I hope you’ll agree), and combined with the stellar performances of the musicians and vocalist assembled for this record, I’m confident you’ll be entertained, thrilled, and ultimately moved by the musical experience…

13/03/2019: Bjørn Riis Announces New Solo Album – A Storm Is Coming

Following on from The Coming Home mini album released in February, Bjørn Riis has announced the forthcoming release of a new solo studio album A Storm Is Coming.

Continuing from where Forever Comes to an End ends, Riis reveals the album  has a different writing process compared to previous releases. “The writing process for this album was a bit different compared to Lullabies and Forever. Lullabies was very much me wanting to finish a lot of the stuff I had laying around from not having used them with Airbag. Forever started out with the title track that was written while I promoted Lullabies and that sort of grew into a new album. This album was written really fast, over a period of 2-3 weeks, and all of the songs are new. There’s no left over material or ideas that’s been laying around. I knew I wanted to make a new album and I pretty much picked up the guitar and started writing.

Riis believes the album remains true to the spontaneity of the song writing process. Fans can follow the process – the writing, recording and mixing of the album – on his web site where he will post news updates, in-depth written features and video clips from the studio.

07/03/2019: Leprous Embark on South American and European Tour

InsideOut Music have revealed that Norwegian band Leprous have started recording their 6th studio album which will be released later in 2019.

Baard Kolstad comments: “We entered the studio to record the drums for half of the album last week with David Castillo @ Ghostward/Fascination Street Studios, same studio as we recorded the 2 latest studio albums. As an over autistic control freak I am when recording myself, this time around I had more time than ever to perfectionise and experiment with my sound almost without compromises, so a big thanks to Einar and David for their patience! We also recorded 1 song together, drums and bass, something neither LEPROUS or I have ever done before. Feeling very good to leave the drum recording for now, focusing on the last half of the album to be recorded in May. I’m so looking forward to hear the outcome just in a few days when the guitarists have put their touch. Will be a different LEPROUS album for sure, but still LEPROUS!

03/03/19: Martigan Call It A Day after 25 Years and Say Farewell

After 25 years, German band Martigan have decided to call it a day. Originally founded on 3rd March 1994 and having released 5 albums and a live DVD, they have regrettably announced “it is time to say goodbye”.

Speaking on their Facebook page, the band comment: “With the 5 members of Martigan also having private lives, jobs and other musical projects, it has become increasingly difficult to get the band together for new songs and rehearsals. Also, individual opinions and preferences of each member about musical styles and how to go forward became more and more diverse.

Thanking fans for their support and encouragement, the band believe they have achieved everything they set out to accomplish and “now realize that all the stories have been told and that we have now reached the possible“. Martigan have put together a collection of memories on their Youtube channel including two full length gigs. Martigan CDs will still be available from Progressive Promotion Records.

01/03/19: Gong Announce New Album and UK Tour

Iconic UK band Gong have announced a new album The Universe Also Collapses for release on 10th May 2019. The release is their first with Kscope.  Kavus Torabi, the band’s singer and guitarist, comments: “We wanted to make what we thought of as the ultimate psychedelic rock album. The word ‘psychedelic’ gets bandied around a lot, and a great deal of the stuff that gets called psychedelic nowadays doesn’t match up to the description. I want to hear music that makes me feel like I’m on drugs.

The album is second since the death in 2015 of Daevid Allen, the band’s founder, and marks the dawning of a new chapter. “Gong has always been a force for propulsive, forward-thinking open-mindedness,” says Kavus. “The last album was partly us paying tribute to Daevid, but I think maybe Daevid would have seen that as a bit too sentimental. He was more ‘Fuck that you guys, do your own thing.”

The Universe Also Collapses was recorded at Snorkel Studios in London, engineered and mixed by Frank Byng, mastered by Andy Jackson at Tube Mastering and features new artwork designed by 57 Design. The album will be released as a CD, a black 180g vinyl LP, a Lt Ed hot pink 180g vinyl LP and digitally. Pre-orders are open now.
