20/01/19: Ted McKenna, Drummer with Michael Schenker, Ian Gillan, Rory Gallagher and Fish Passes Away at 68
Rock drummer Ted McKenna, who played for bands including Michael Schenker, Greg Lake, Ian Gillan, Rory Gallagher, Fish and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, has passed away at the age of 68 due to complications whilst undergoing hernia surgery.
Fish, with whom he played in the studio, comments: “A fabulous musician and one of the all time greats who inspired so many rock drummers across generations he was a truly legendary stick man who graced so many kits behind so many world famous bands. I had the enormous pleasure of not only working in the studio with him but also sharing stages in various incarnations over the years. He was a monster drummer with endless energies who played with so much soul and passion and drove songs with a power and grace like no other.”
McKenna, who was also a college lecturer in Glasgow, was preparing to go out on tour again with Michael Schenker. Fish fondly continues: “it wasn’t only his playing that made him such a legend. He was a beautiful man who could drift from the comic to the serious, abound with stories and anecdotes, a perpetual smile despite all the difficulties he encountered and suffered over the years with never a bad word to say about anyone. I loved his bear hugs and his enthusiasm for everything. Always positive and always there for you if you needed him. He was a man’s man and I am honoured to have had him as a true friend.”

Mike Portnoy has announced via Facebook that Sons of Apollo are presently working on a second album. Portnoy (Dream Theater/The Winery Dogs,/Metal Allegiance/The Neal Morse Band) is heading to LA to begin the drum tracking after an intense writing session with keyboardist Derek Sherinian, vocalist Jeff Scott Soto and guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal. The post reads: “What an intense writing session we’ve had for SOA2 over the last week!! It was a whirlwind of creativity and we managed to pull it all together and knock it out of the park!! We decided to write the basic music w just MP, DS & Bumblefoot (as most of the 1st album was done that way…) and then Billy & Jeff will begin adding their magic once the basic tracks are recorded…Wasting no time, drum tracking will begin tomorrow in LA! We will then spend the rest of the year crafting the album and are shooting to have it out at the end of the year or beginning of 2020.”

18/01/19: Thomas Thielen Signs to Giant Electric Pea Ahead of New Album Release
‘t’ – aka German multi-instrumentalist Thomas Thielen – has signed with GEP ahead of the release of his seventh studio album Solipsystemology. Thielen describes the new release as “the third layer to the fractal narration that started with (first album) ‘Fragmentropy’ where a postmodern Pygmalion fails to write his dream into life. Second album ‘Epistrophobia’ asks why this writing failed. Now ‘Solipsystemology’ explores the motives that made him write – and its’ consequences.” It is an album which works on many layers and levels combining the clues provided by the music, the lyrics, the artwork, and even the acoustics.
To support the album, Thielen is heading out on tour for the first time ever, including an appearance at the prestigious Night of the Prog festival in Lorelei. The live band includes guitarist Jan Steiger, drummer Thomas Nußbaum, bassist Yenz Strutz and keyboard player Dominik Hüttermann. The album will be released in late March 2019.

16/01/19: Devin Townsend Announces New Album Empath for March 2019 on InsideOut Music
Devin Townsend has announced the official release of his new album Empath for 29th March 2019. A year and a half in preparation, Townsend will release a series of walk-through videos giving some background to each song on the release.
Townsend believes “this record has taken me down a lot of very interesting psychological and technical avenues and the process was documented from the very get-go by a series of documentary videos that I have done, that outline everything from the gestation of the idea to the actualisation of it, through all the existential ups and downs that went on. As such this record is different to any record that I have released thus far, and trying to get people on board for what it is versus what it isn’t, I think needs to be dealt with in a different way.
Stay tuned for the making of ‘EMPATH’ – the video series.”
Empath will be released on Limited 2 CD Digipak (including an entire disc of bonus material), Standard CD Jewelcase, Gatefold 180G 2LP Vinyl + CD + LP-booklet & as digital album.

Singer and keyboardist Yogi Lang explains: “This time it didn’t turn out to be a concept album in the true sense. But there are seven short stories about science fiction. 11/01/19: Dream Theater to Release 14th Studio Album Distance Over Time with Supporting Tour
Dream Theater have announced the release of their 14th studio album Distance Over Time. The album is their first with new label InsideOutMusic and follows on from The Astonishing which was released three years ago.
John Petrucci believes the album represents a new spirit of creativity and adventure for the band. “When I listen back to the album, I can distinctly recall every moment of the writing process; where I was standing in the room, what inspired us in that instant and the meaning behind each song. As a producer, my goal was to try and create the best-sounding Dream Theater record we’ve ever made so that listeners can just be enveloped in the music. I really wanted this recording to truly reflect the spirit, joy and passion that went into making the album and for people to walk away feeling some of the organic nature, personality and raw energy that the band captured while together in the studio. For me, I think it accomplishes that and I hope that other people will feel the same way.”
An extensive US tour along with dates in Europe have also been confirmed.

04/01/19: Mike Oldfield’s The Killing Fields to be released as Limited Edition Deluxe Box-Set
The Killing Fields is a 1984 British biographical drama film about the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, which is based on the experiences of two journalists: Cambodian Dith Pran and American Sydney Schanberg. Directed by Roland Joffé, produced by David Puttnam and the musical score was written by Mike Oldfield and orchestrated by David Bedford.
“The Killing Fields” is the 10th record album by Mike Oldfield, originally released in 1984 on Virgin Records. It is the only full-length film score written by Mike Oldfield with the music was orchestrated by David Bedford.
Oldfield spent six months working on the score for “The Killing Fields” before going on tour, but when Oldfield returned, the producers of the film asked for more music to be written, prompting Oldfield to ask for the use of an orchestra and a choir; three months later the score was finished.
This deluxe box set brings together both the soundtrack CD and the film DVD for the first time, along with reproduction memorabilia from the film and a numbered certificate.
