21/12/18: Steve Hackett launches second single from At The Edge Of Light
Following the success of 2017’s The Night Siren, Steve Hackett recently announced the release of his new studio album, At The Edge Of Light, to be released through InsideOut Music, on 25th January 2019. Today sees the release of the release of the second single Underground Railroad, which features vocalists Durga and Lorelei McBroom.
Steve Hackett comments: “I was inspired to write “Underground Railroad” in Wilmington, Delaware, discovering about that amazing network that helped slaves escape in pre-Civil War America, spearheaded by brave people like Harriet Tubman. Durga and Lorelei McBroom (both sang with Pink Floyd) sound amazing, expressing that heartfelt pain. As well as electric guitar, I play Dobro acoustic and also harmonica, transporting us back to those times…”
You can listen to the album’s first single Under The Eye Of The Sun HERE.
Of the new album Steve adds: “In these dangerous times, deep shadows feel even sharper than usual and we find ourselves standing at the edge of light… The contrast between dark and light weaves its way throughout the album in many ways, from the sense of good fighting evil through to the interplay of dark and light opposites magically combining in cultures, including the heartbeat of India and primal tribal rhythms. Ultimately, this album embraces the need for all musical forms and cultures to connect and celebrate the wonder of unity in this divided world.”
At The Edge Of Light will be released in a number of formats including: CD | Double Vinyl + CD | Media-book CD + DVD | Digital format.

21/12/18: Guitarist Markus Reuter Releases First Christmas Album
Poly-disciplinary musician and touch guitarist Markus Reuter has just released his first Christmas album – a free, limited-availability-period recording of five traditional Christmas songs (each of which has been given Markus’ distinctive loop/solo/soundscape treatment). As with much of Markus’ music, the pieces are accessible and enjoyable while concealing hidden depths. Beneath and behind Markus’ soulful touch guitar renditions of the original melodies, billowing detailed soundscapes are built on re-examinations and explorations of the pitch series of each tune. Listeners can enjoy the simple snowfall, or choose to tunnel deeper into the ice kingdom. A parallel universe… strangely hypnotizing.

For us it was not only thematically very interesting, but also musically an incredible playground, which literally invited to experiment with sounds and all imaginable musical stylistic devices.”

So next year is a significant anniversary for me. And when someone suggested this, it made sense. This isn’t the first time it’s been proposed, but now it is all coming together.
I need musicians of the highest calibre to make it all work properly. The people in Gong fit the bill. I know them well, have guested with the band on a number of recent occasions and they’re all keen to do this.”
The Steve Hillage Band will also play the Sunday evening at next year’s Night Of The Prog XIV Festival.

05/12/18: New studio album – Flowers At The Scene – by Tim Bowness
Tim Bowness has announced the release of Flowers At The Scene, his new studio album, which is scheduled for release, by InsideOut Music, on 1st March 2019. Guest appearances include Peter Hammill, Andy Partridge, Kevin Godley, Jim Matheos and David Longdon.
“Against a backdrop of propulsive Art Rock, heartbreaking ballads and more, Tim Bowness distinctively delivers cinematic storytelling and disarmingly direct confessional lyrics on his strongest solo album to date.”
Commenting on the album: “Lost In The Ghost Light – which was always intended as a one-off – felt like a perfect conclusion to a particular way of writing and working. In the wake of that, Flowers At The Scene very much feels like a press reset.
It was an exciting project to put together and it was great working closely with old sparring partners, Brian Hulse and Steven Wilson. Steven was initially brought in to mix the album, but very quickly he was doing far more and developing production ideas alongside Brian and I. Listening to pieces such as Not Married Anymore, Borderline and The War On Me, we both felt that the project had more than a hint of the spirit of no-man and it became obvious that this was a no-man co-production rather than a Bowness/Wilson one.”
Flowers At The Scene will be released by InsideOut Music on 1st March 2019.

The Neal Morse Band have premiered their new single Welcome To The World exclusively with Prog.
Commenting on Welcome To The World, Mike Portnoy says: “Here’s the first taste from the upcoming double concept album The Great Adventure.
“While the album is made up of two acts and five epic chapters, there are many songs within the chapters with constant reoccurring themes, riffs and melodies that make the entire album a very cinematic experience – continuing on from its predecessor The Similitude Of A Dream.
“Welcome To The World is a great example of some of the new directions taken with this album and the lyric video by Christian Rios is the first look into this new world!”

01/12/18: Peter Hammill announces the release The K Box
The K Box is a 4CD box-set collecting the output of Peter Hammill and the K Group, including the studio albums Enter K and Patience and the live recordings The Margin and +. The K Box will be released on 2nd February 2019. Full track listing can be found HERE
This limited edition deluxe set also features extra tracks and a 48 page hard back book with sleeve notes by Tim Bowness, reflections from PH and the band, plus previously unseen photographs.
Formed in 1981 to tour material from A Black Box and Sitting Targets, the K Group was Peter Hammill’s idea of a traditional Beat Group and like everything else in Hammill’s world it was far from typical and a universe away from the likes of Herman’s Hermits or The Clash.
Utilising the considerable talents of ex-Vibrators and Peter Gabriel guitarist John Ellis and former Van Der Graaf members Guy Evans and Nic Potter, the stripped-down nature of the K Group’s sound – echoed by Enter K’s stark and uncompromising artwork – aligned Hammill’s vision even more closely to the burgeoning Post-Punk scene that his music had undoubtedly influenced, while also remaining true to his Progressive-era experiments with song structure, time signatures and textures.
Between 1981 and 1984, over the course of dozens of concerts, two studio albums, two singles and a live release (issued in 1985), the K Group delivered a muscular take on Hammill’s unique artistry that resulted in a body of work distinct from other phases in his prolific career. At its most prosaic, the K Group offered relatively straightforward Rock songs (Paradox Drive, Film Noir), dramatic ballads (Just Good Friends), sonic experiments (Accidents) and knotty epics, but in reality the K quartet transformed these generic starting points into something far more individual, and – flying in the face of early 1980s Pop artifice – wholeheartedly human.
Ultimately, the K Group may only represent a tiny fraction of Peter Hammill’s vast output, but like Van Der Graaf Generator the band provided a memorable means of hearing Hammill’s visionary music in a powerful collective context: A context that arguably remained dormant until the 21st Century resurrection of Van Der Graaf Generator itself.
