21/07/18: Renaissance to release A Symphonic Journey 2CD/DVD
Cherry Red Records (in conjunction with Symphonic Rock Recordings) announce the release of a new 2CD/DVD live album, A Symphonic Journey from Renaissance. Recorded at the Glenside’s Keswick Theatre on 27th October 2017. Renaissance perform an extensive set of classic material with the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble especially formed for a series of American concerts.
Annie Haslam comments: “Renaissance has touched so many hearts across land and sea, for what seems to be most of a lifetime now, in the performance of this exquisite and unique music. I cannot imagine my life apart from being the ‘voice’ of Renaissance, to carry our message out into the world. For a long time now it has been a dream of mine for Renaissance to perform ‘live’ again with an orchestra, but the how and when of this was unclear. I felt however, deep inside that it would one day come to pass.
I was filled with pride and overwhelmed with emotion when we finally stepped onto the stage for this performance. To look over my shoulder and see all of the classical musicians with their instruments, brought back my vivid memory of our orchestral performance forty years ago in London, of Renaissance at The Royal Albert Hall with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra”.
A Symphonic Journey will be released on 14th September 2018. Full track listing can be found HERE.

I recorded the song alone in my cottage in Sussex and I love the way it gave the track such a sense of warmth and intimacy whilst being bare.”

13/07/18: 41POINT9 premiere single/video from new studio album
41POINT9 premiere the second single/video from their forthcoming album Mr. Astute Trousers. The band has two albums being released on 21st September 2018. One is the brand-new sophomore release Mr. Astute Trousers and the other is a remixed and re-mastered version of their debut album Still Looking For Answers. The band has been busy creating a series “of high quality concept videos” to promote Mr. Astute Trousers – you can find the previous release in last month’s TPA News – and now the latest one here…
“We don’t care about styles or subjects or how the song will be classified. We start out with an idea and let the idea dictate where the song will lead. We usually write the lyrics first and then add the music in order to further the concept of the song. As such, we are able to bring a diverse range of musical influences to bear, like a painter would with many pigments and brushes. We actually create the songs with little to no regard for how we would or even could perform them live”
Mr. Astute Trousers Still Looking For Answers will be released on 21st September 2018.

12/07/18: Soft Machine new studio album and tour dates
Soft Machine announce a new studio album, recorded at the late Jon Hiseman’s Temple Studio in December 2017 – Hidden Details will be released in September 2018.
“’Hidden Details’ is very much the product of an active, contemporary sounding outfit striking out with its own agenda. Though informed by the past, the music here is neither weighed down nor beholden to it. Animated with the same ineffable and inquisitive spirit that has always made this group throughout its fifty years such a compelling experience, it’’ good to have a new Soft Machine with us in 2018. The yearning tenderness of ‘Heart Off Guard’ and the come-down reveries of ‘Broken Hill’ and ‘Drifting White’ showcase the more intimate aspects of Soft Machine’s personality while in contrast, ‘One Glove’ gives the more pugilistic side of John Etheridge’s playing an outing. The terse angularities of the title track and ‘Life on Bridges’ highlight a fearless disposition, as does the buzzsaw interplay heard during ‘Ground Lift’ and ‘Flight of the Jett,’ both featuring Roy Babbington’s decisive interventions. The surging lyricism of ‘Fourteen Hour Dream’ flirts with an almost popish sensibility, underscoring the sense that this is a quartet that is fundamentally at ease with itself. The return of what some older fans of the band have called ‘cosmic tinkles’’– the appearance of layers of cyclical electric piano motifs – is especially welcome. Their brief manifestation on ‘The Man Who Waved at Trains’ and Third-era, ‘Out-Bloody-Rageous,’ both stone-cold Mike Ratledge-composed classics, adds an extra spacey dimension to the overall sound. Travis’ use of looping technology with his flutes creates its own beguiling world and can be heard to powerful effect on the beautiful and enigmatic ‘Breathe,’ where his hovering notes are underpinned by Marshall’s oblique yet atmospheric percussion.” – Sid Smith
Hidden Details will be released in September 2018 on MoonJune Records (North America), on John Etheridge’s Dyan Records (UK/Europe) and on Vivid Records (Japan). Various formats will be available including CD | Vinyl | HD Download and special packages from the band.
In support of their forthcoming album, Soft Machine will embark on their first North American tour since 1974 in October 2018, followed by the second North-American leg of the tour in January/February 2019. 10/07/18: Cherry Red Records & Esoteric Recordings acquire Strawbs catalogue
Cherry Red Records announce that they have acquired the extensive catalogue of Witchwood Media, home to the music of the legendary Strawbs and other related artists. The acquisition follows the release of The Ferryman’s Curse, the latest studio album from Strawbs, released late last year.
Cherry Red managing director Adam Velasco said; “We enjoyed working with Strawbs on The Ferryman’s Curse and it was a successful project for us. To bring the Witchwood catalogue to Cherry Red is very special. We are looking forward to bringing this wonderful collection of albums on catalogue under the Cherry Red umbrella in the coming months”.
Witchwood was established by Strawbs founder David Cousins in November 2001 as a vehicle to release archive recordings by the band and subsequently new albums and DVDs. David Cousins, lifetime leader of the Strawbs, and director of Witchwood Media Limited, said: “Cherry Red’s successful promotion of Strawbs’ new album ‘The Ferryman’s Curse’ delivered the band’s first chart record since the 1970s. It was obvious that Cherry Red was the company with the potential to maximize the Witchwood Media catalogue in the future. We look forward to a creative and productive partnership.”

10/07/18: Roy Harper announces UK tour dates for March 2019
Roy Harper will be celebrating 50 years “of monumental classics including McGoohan’s Blues” with a short run of UK dates in March 2019…
“Partly because many of the things I wrote about in McGoohan’s Blues are still very relevant 50 years later, and partly because my third record was a watershed moment in my recording life, it’s been long in my mind that I should dust it off and bring it on tour again. I’ll be joined by Bill Shanley and an ensemble of musicians which might have to be slightly more versatile in terms of instrumentation this time, although I have to say that the players we brought out last time provided me with the best accompaniment I’ve ever had in my life. I was overjoyed with what we produced, so we’ll just have to see whether we can equal that.”

06/07/18: Tides of Man return with new single – Static Hymn
Tampa, Florida based instrumental post-rock outfit, Tides of Man have revealed their new single and video Static Hymn
Alongside the new single came the announcement that Tides of Man will be releasing a new full-length album, entitled Every Nothing, on 3rd August 2018. Every Nothing is a collection of 12 meticulously arranged post-rock compositions that builds on the band’s 2014 full-length, Young and Courageous.
“The synergy throughout the album allows listeners a serene experience that highlights the band’s creative growth while staying true to their foundational sound that led to such a dedicated international following for the band upon their previous release. Every Nothing explores the theme that sometimes the most insignificant moments, one takes for granted, can be the most important. When looking back, these small moments can be life-defining. Sonically, Every Nothing shows a darker and more brooding side of the bands writing – creating an atmosphere that reflects their artistic maturation over the past four years.”

Giancarlo Erra chose the track “Don’t You Dare” as the band’s first single & video to reveal this new direction: “The ‘daring’ aspect is part of the ‘allowing yourself’ process, expressed in this track by an unsettling melodic line and an unusual up-tempo conclusion with disco-like electronic drums. The song then begins its second stage, presenting acoustic instruments in new ways (cello) and then several synced electronics mixed with chopped/inverted acoustic parts.”

It also provides an uplifting introduction to the album’s theme of solidarity and belonging.”

Its groundbreaking style, incorporating elements of rock, pop and EDM in a heady fusion of styles was widely acclaimed on its launch, with one commentator describing it as “possibly the most progressive album ever”.”
Unlike it’s predecessor, ‘Dial’ has no central story linking the songs, though the theme of communication provides a thread through the album.
“We humans do a marvellous job of failing to communicate with one another, often when it matters most”, says Shineback main man Simon Godfrey. “All the songs on ‘Dial’ carry that as an underlying theme. Musically, very much like the debut album and last year’s ‘Minotaur’ EP, the new record seeks to hop the fences between genres, just to enjoy the process of getting dirty while in the hunt for buried sonic treasures”.
Alongside Simon’s regular writing partner (and label mate) Robert Ramsay, guests returning from ‘Rise up Forgotten…” including Matt Stevens (The Fierce & The Dead), Dec Burke (Frost*, Darwin’s Radio), Hywel Bennett (Dec Burke Band) and Henry Rogers (Touchstone, Mostly Autumn). New collaborators Tom Slatter, Daniel Zambas (We Are Kin) and Simon’s bandmates in Valdez Joe Cardilo and Tom Hyatt make this album very much a Bad Elephant family affair.
