24/05/18: Matt Barber to release new solo album

Bad Elephant Music announce the release of Suite For Piano and Electronics, the new solo album from Matt Baber – scheduled for 15th June 2018.

“As a founding member of the innovative progressive rockers Sanguine Hum, Matt has been at the forefront of combining contemporary keyboard work with modern progressive song writing since the early 2000s, through a trio of highly acclaimed albums.

This solo album sees Matt taking a sidestep away from the band format, showcasing a different side to his musical personality. With influences as diverse as Steve Reich, Keith Emerson and Boards of Canada, Matt has created a unique suite of modern music that seamlessly blends ambient minimalism with classical sensibilities.”

“This record is really a culmination of so many different strands that I’ve been working on”, says Matt. “I’ve tried really hard over the years to develop something personal and unique when I sit at the piano, and the pieces often come from spontaneous improvisations. The same is true of the electronics – there are certain sounds and moods I seem to end up arriving at, and it’s been really enjoyable finding ways to unite these two components”.

24/05/18: Gazpacho release new video for Hypomania

Ahead of the start of their European tour today and following the release of their new album Soyuz last week, Gazpacho have shared a video for Hypomania – directed by Dewi Allen.

Hypomania is the conclusion to a visual duology and counters the calm, ethereal nature of “Exit Suite” with an emotionally raw, heavy rock track represented by the fast-paced urban-based scenes.”

Gazpacho’s Thomas Andersen explains the song’s sentiment “’Hypomania’ is a song about someone who realises that he is in love with his own projection of someone and not the real person. He has a crisis and ends up leaving. As a Gazpacho song we spent a long time discussing if we should include it on the Soyuz album as it is different from the other songs there. It is a catchy straight forward rock song and we decided to keep it because it is exactly the kind of song men going through similar situations would be listening to while flying off to Vegas to lose all their money on gambling and drink.”

You can read the TPA’s review of Gazpacho’s Soyuz HERE.

23/05/18: C:Live Collective to release This City Is London EP in June

Clive Mitten’s C:Live Collective announce the release of a four track EP on 1st June 2018. This City Is London EP will feature four re-mixes of the final track from their recently released debut album, The Age Of Insanity, itself a radical reworking of the Twelfth Night track which appeared on the band’s Fact And Fiction.

Clive Mitten comments: “These show different aspects of life in a multi-cultural city where all are born equal, but some are more equal than others.”

22/05/18: Encircled to release The Universal Mirth in August‬

Midlands prog rockers Encircled will release their third album, The Universal Mirth, ‪on 4th August 2018.

“We have gone a bit darker on this album” says Bass/keyboard player Scott Evans. “The music came first and we had a lot written whilst we were promoting the last album, it maintains some of the song writing elements of The Monkey Jamboree that people latched onto but more complex and layered. Busby (vocalist – Mark ‘Busby’ Burrows) has taken his lyric writing to a new level and really explored darker themes , all relevant to today’s cyber security paranoid nation”

Guesting on the album is Peter Jones (Tiger Moth Tales, Red Bazar, Camel). “Pete contributed a 3 minute keyboard solo on the closing 13 minute track Log Out that is one of the finest things I have ever heard, a goose bumps moment for the band” says Scott.

Pre-ordering via Bandcamp begins on 1st July 2018.

20/05/18: The Sea Within launch first single from their debut album

The Sea Within reveal the first track taken from their self-titled debut studio album which will be released on 22nd June 2018. Check-out Ashes of Dawn – the album’s opening track…

Roine Stolt comments: “’Ashes of Dawn’ was one of the first songs Jonas & I started working on for the TSW project last year. It came a long way – a big de-tour before its final form here.

I first took it full ‘Apocalypse Now’ direction lyric wise – but it later landed somewhere else – perhaps not 100% representative of the rest of album – but that’s pretty much what this is all about – we travel fearless through many styles & influences, and here with a slight touch of ‘metal’ perhaps, but we’ve also got Rob Townsend guesting on a fusiony sax solo.

The video is surreal stuff – animated dreamy eye candy put together by clever people.

This tune ended up as the opening track of our debut album – however, personally I see all songs as a continuum – just one side of this band’s personality – one style and expression – this is the introduction, but we’ll go many different places on rest of album.”

The Sea Within features Roine Stolt, Daniel Gildenlöw, Jonas Reingold, Tom Brislin and Marco Minnemann and their self-titled album will be available as a special edition 2CD digipak, gatefold 2LP vinyl + 2CD & as digital download, next month.

19/05/18: Wiv Entertainment finalise the line-up for this year’s Night of the Prog XIII

With this week’s announcement of Arena as the penultimate act on Sunday, Wiv Entertainment has finalised the line-up for this year’s Night of the Prog at the beautiful Loreley Amphitheater on the banks of the river Rhine, Sankt Goarshausen, Germany.

Once again, the festival will be run over three days, 13th – 15th July, headline bands being Big Big Train, Camel and Isidur’s Bane featuring Steve Hogarth. Saturday sees the debut performance of Roine Stolt’s latest project, The Sea Within, while Friday includes a welcome return to ‘the rock’ of Polish progers Riverside – surely to be an emotional evening following the passing of guitarist Piotr Grudziński in 2016.

It’s a very eclectic line-up this year, with a very prog focus. Established bands as diverse as Threshold, Mystery, Ange, Wobbler, Rikard Sjöblom’s Gungfly, Long Distance Calling and Arena sharing the stage with young up-coming acts that will be new to many – there’s always new music to be discovered.

TPA will be present once again at this ever popular and (usually) sunny event and once again we’ll be live blogging: the music, characters, meeting the artists and maybe a beer, or two.

14/05/18: Strangefish announce the release of their third album

Strangefish have announced they will release their first new studio album, The Spotlight Effect, on 18th June 2018.

“We’ve never been blessed with a great sense of urgency, so two years on from deciding we had enough in the bag for the album and kick-started the recordings, here we are finally with a new collection of songs, of which we all feel immensely proud.”

‘The Spotlight Effect’ focuses on the media driven world we find ourselves in today, where every move we make is analysed then picked to pieces. There’s nothing sacred anymore; all things are considered fair game for an ‘entertain-me’ hungry audience. This perfectly summed up the general mood of all the songs, with aspects of the human condition as the overriding theme.”

The Spotlight Effect will be on CD and digital media next month.

12/05/18: Gérard Hourbette ~ RIP

Art Zoyd director and composer Gérard Hourbette passed away on 4th May 2018 at the age of 64.

“A major figure of the musical avant-garde, Gérard Hourbette contributed to it through his work as a composer, his commitment to the advancement of musical writing and instrumental approach.

A violinist by training, an electro-acoustician and a tireless composer, Gérard Hourbette, influenced by the work of such contemporary composers as Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Henry, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio, paved the way for new compositional forms, making use of sampling, drawing from multiple sources, including both natural and industrial sounds, at the crossroads of performing arts and visual arts. His rich and varied output opens up poetic soundscapes, and a musical architecture with robust foundations.

A writer and poet, his Écrits (publ. by La Pensée universelle, Paris, 1988) revealed a swift mind forging ahead on its own path, the long road of a constant journey towards new horizons, setting off the elements of nature, wind, colors and sensations which connect to the sense of life, the world of images and the realm of the invisible.

His writings were filled with an inspiration which drew from fantasy and science-fiction (notably Philip K. Dick), a strangeness combined with a dark sense of humor. The artist himself often claimed to work “at the edge of dreams or death”, questioning the absurd, a stratagem which allowed him to sublimate tragedy and thwart the trap of pain and illness.”

The above is part of the Cuneiform Records post, prepared by Gérard’s wife Monique and Art Zoyd Studios. The full text can be found HERE.

09/05/18: Jeff Berlin to release 30th Anniversary Edition of Joe Frazier

Jeff Berlin will be releasing an anniversary edition of his signature song Joe Frazier. The Joe Frazier – Round 3 EP will include a newly re-mastered version of the original song, taken from his critically acclaimed 1987 album Pump It! and a completely re-imagined version, composed and performed by Jeff Berlin, Steve Vai, David Sancious, Keith Carlock and Tom Hemby.

Says Jeff, “’Joe Frazier’ is a song that has remained with me throughout my career. No matter where I am in the world, people ask to hear this song. 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the rendition that I recorded on my second solo record, ‘Pump It!’ While chatting about the tune with producer John McCracken, we thought to come up with a new version, calling it ‘Joe Frazier – Round 3.’ For me, this new song is almost entirely different from the previous two renditions and, quite honestly, I think that this is one of the best tunes I ever wrote.”

Joe Frazier- Round 3 will be released this Friday – 11th May 2018 – and available in several formats.

08/05/18: Festival Music announce release date for Twelfth Night’s Fact And Fiction – The Definitive Edition

Fact And Fiction is the latest of the Twelfth Night original albums to be given the Definitive Edition treatment, and released by the excellent F2/Festival Music label. However, in a change to the previous releases, rather than augment the original LP with other tracks that featured in the band’s live set at the time, this time there is more focus on the original tracks giving a glimpse of how they developed through the various processes of writing, rehearsing, demoing, recording, and finally being played live.

In addition as a number of cover versions and re-workings already existed, new recordings were commissioned from band members, contemporaries and current artists to show how other artists interpreted the tracks, and these really complement the Twelfth Night versions, and bring out the true strength of the original songs.

To accompany the CDs there are some extensive, sleeve notes written specially, including an extract from Michael Anthony’s ‘Words & Music’ book that reviews Geoff’s lyric writing in incisive detail. In addition there are never-before seen scans of some of Geoff’s original handwritten lyrics and sketches, as well as new photos, etc.

Twelfth Night – Fact And Fiction ~ The Definitive Edition will be released on 11th June 2018 as a 3 CD set in a digipak. Track listing and and more information can be found HERE.

“Working with Cleopatra has been great”, says Fosso. “They’re skilled and competent, I’m sure they will take Armonite to the next level. 03/05/18: Esoteric Recordings announce re-mastered release from Cosmus

Esoteric Recordings who earlier this week announced three new Procol Harum reissues, (info located at the bottom of this page), reveal the release of a new re-mastered and expanded edition of Cosmus’ album First Utterance, originally released in February 1971 on Pye Records’ progressive rock label Dawn.

First Utterance was a darkly stunning masterpiece by COMUS, a group who arguably defy being classified in any genre. Too dark, loud and eccentric to be folk, but too unconventional to be classified as a rock band, the influence of Comus’ work extended far beyond their short life”…

“Their 1971 album later attained a significant cult following and is regarded as one of the most interesting and influential releases on the Dawn label. This expanded and re-mastered reissue includes four bonus tracks taken from the ‘Diana’ maxi-single, along with the song ‘All the Colours of Darkness’, recorded during the “First Utterance” sessions. The booklet restores the original album artwork and features an essay by Malcolm Dome and interviews with band members.”

First Utterance will be released on 25th May 2018 through the Esoteric Recordings/Cherry Red Records labels.

03/05/18: Valis Ablaze and Unprocessed team up for UK tour

Progressive metal bands Valis Ablaze and Unprocessed have announced a co-headline early Summer tour, kicking off in late June and ahead of appearances at this year’s UK Tech Fest.

02/07/18: Subside, Birmingham
03/07/18: The Black Heart, London*
05/07/18: UK Tech-Fest, Newark
*(main support to Nexilva and The Dali Thundering Concept)

With their debut full-length Boundless (out April 6th via Long Branch Records), VALIS ABLAZE present an even more refined sound: low end grooves juxtaposed with soaring vocal lines, crisp milton-cleans and atmospheric synths, all driven by intricate rhythm work and growling bass. A huge spectrum of energy, emotion, power and beauty.

UNPROCESSED’s sound features insanely fast palm muted, chugged guitar-riffs and shredding solos that meet soundscapes from another dimension, guttural vocals that are contrasted by lucid and melodic clean singing. A sharp bass tone and groovy, yet detail oriented drum-lines form a massive rhythm section and complete the bands overall sound. This mixture shows that this young band is ready to conquer the scene.
