Sonicbond was announced at this year’s Summer’s End Festival and the label’s first release will be on 10th November 2017.

Stephen Lambe tells Prog: “Those with long memories might remember my CD mail order business Sonicbond in the mid 2000s,” Lambe continues “Although I ended that business 10 years ago, I’ve always loved the name and wanted to bring it back in some form. We think it’s the perfect name for the label as it sums up very concisely our relationship with the artists, the music and the listeners.”

Tainted will be released in all digital formats and CD and will be distributed by Nova (known for their long-term relationship with Mostly Autumn) via Plastichead. It follows on from When Mary’s 2013 debut album 7Summers7Winters.”

13/10/17: InsideOut Music premiere title track from Virgil & Steve Howe’s Nexus

Following the news earlier this week that Steve Howe would continue with plans to release the recently completed collaborative album with late son Virgil, (read below) – InsideOut Music and Steve Howe reveal the first piece of new music to be taken from the album.

Steve Howe comments: “On most of the tracks on the album I stick to one featured guitar per track but on Nexus I use a dual guitar approach, I start by playing my favourite Gibson ES175D but then move over to a single neck Fender Professional Steel, which has 2 pick-ups, then I move back & forwards between them. The structure of this track demonstrates Virgil’s melodic and rhythmic approach, which came about by him learning to play and make music ‘by ear’ utilising his keyboards and drums to invent his own writing style.”

Nexus is set for release 17th November 2017.

So, we called Jeff Glixman!”

11/10/17: Virgil & Steve Howe – Nexus album to be released in November

Steve Howe announces that the Nexus album which he and son Virgil had recently completed will be released next month. Virgil Howe passed away unexpectedly on 11th September 2017.

Speaking of the album on the Official Yes Facebook Page, Steve Howe says: “Virgil and I had only recently completed recording ‘Nexus’, which contains eleven of his tunes to which I added a guitar to suit each one. We delivered it to InsideOutMusic in August for release on 17th November. We started to work together in 2016 by selecting about nine tunes from his ‘stockpile’ of piano based music that he’d periodically sent Jan & I each time he’d written and recorded a new idea. I began adding guitars to them, then I’d play them to Virgil. He’d then surprise me by bringing up other channels of instrumentation which I’d never heard. The tunes went from straightforward ‘duets’ to something bigger & better, more of a complete picture than a mere shape. “Free Fall” & “Nick’s Star” were added from earlier sessions, the latter being his tribute to the passing of his best friend Nick Hirsch.

‘Nexus’ explores a completely different side of Virgil’s ability, as a writer & keyboard player – ‘in his own right’. His talents were multi-diverse, so sitting at a keyboard & computer or in the middle of his drum kit, at all his regular DJ-ing gigs or on the radio, he always gave his best. We hope that the music just completed will stand as a fitting tribute to his life and legacy.”

02. Hidden Planet (3:27)
03. Leaving Aurura (3:40)
04. Nick’s Star (3:41)

Mabel Greer’s Toyshop announce a December release date for their new studio album, The Secret, which features Peter Banks and Clive Bayley playing a guitar duo.

Clive has written a new song around previously recorded guitar parts by Peter Banks. The song is included in the album as a tribute to Peter Banks and Chris Squire joining Mabel Greer in September 1967. “I did it because reading of Peter’s passing in 2013 was the catalyst for meeting Bob Hagger again and coming up with the crazy idea of re-forming Mabel Greer. The result is that we have produced two new albums since then, and released re-mastered BBC tapes from 1967 on the EP ‘Images’”, said Clive.”

10/10/17: Godsticks reveal Hard To Face video ahead of new album release

Godsticks who release their latest studio album this Friday, on Kscope, have shared a new video for Hard To Face.

Speaking about Hard To Face Darran Charles says: “’Hard to Face’ in particular I think, sums up the current Godsticks sound. Even though I’m the main songwriter, it was only when Tom and Dan put down their drum and bass tracks that this song came alive and began to evince the aggression and angst in which the song was written. It’s also the first time I’ve delegated lead guitar duties on a Godsticks album but I was happy to because the solo Gavin laid down on the album version of the song was perfect.”

“All four of the band’s members have found a voice on this release, becoming a sharp unit which has delivered an intriguing and interesting album. The music is the perfect foil for the stories contained in the lyrics…” Read Mel Allen’s full review of Faced With Rage HERE on TPA.

Hard To Face will be officially released on Friday 13th October 2017.

02/10/17: Beatrix Players to release double A side single

London-based all-female trio Beatrix Players have been announced as winners of the Prog Magazine Limelight Award for 2017 at the ceremony last week. The band are celebrating the win with the release of their new, double A side single All That Thinking/Hurt, plus a single launch being held at London’s St Pancras Old Church on Thursday 5th October where they will be joined for the evening by the SOUND choir.

The Limelight Award highlights the “emerging talent that’s risen to the top of the prog ocean over the past 12 months”.

All That Thinking is taken from their 2017 debut album Magnified, and is a song about the difficulty of having a child and the blame that goes on between partners, and the band are delighted to have joined forces with leading national charity Fertility Network UK to help raise awareness of National Fertility Awareness Week which takes place on 30th October – 5th November. This years they are celebrating 40 years since the first successful IVF treatment.

This is a campaign that especially resonates with Beatrix Players’ vocalist Amy Birks: “I was told today that 1 in 6 couples experience difficulties with fertility. A fact that took me right back to the NHS waiting room, a very beige room filled with pensive faces; couples and individuals of all ages from all walks of life and all with one thing in common, fertility difficulties”

All That Thinking begins with these lines:

‘Sometimes I’m scared, at the end of another wait. All that thinking for nothing because nothing ever came, and I don’t mind if it’s you but I’ll weep if it’s me…’

and those sentiments clearly resonated with the charity –

‘Fertility Network UK are very much looking forward to working with Beatrix Players during this year’s National Fertility Awareness Week. Their single, All That Thinking is incredibly emotive and is something we believe will connect with anyone who is struggling, or has, struggled to have a family.’ Susan Seenan, CEO, Fertility Network UK.

02/10/17: Nordic Giants to release new documentary later this month

Brighton based post-rock duo Nordic Giants have announced they will be releasing a new documentary film and soundtrack on the 27th of October. ‘Amplify Human Vibration’ is a short film created by the band that seeks to shed light on positive changes that are happening in the world that can often disappear in the news cycles of the turbulent times we live in. The film which has been supported by a hugely successful crowd-funding campaign will be accompanied a full original soundtrack created by the band and released on CD & Vinyl.

Nordic Giants, made up of musicians Rôka & Löki, are a duo who create colossal and cinematic instrumental post-rock. Famed for their engulfing live performances, they perform live soundtracks to their own beautiful short films. Covered in feathers and surrounded by dense fog and thunderous noise, a Nordic Giants performance is not one that you are likely to forget and that has seen the band earn themselves supporters from the likes of The Guardian, The Independent, BBC Film Composers, Prog Magazine and many more.

This latest project from the pair will see them expand on their cinematic roots and create a short documentary film and soundtrack. Setting out to explore the very best of human nature and create an opposing narrative to the bleak one presented by our media, the band have reached out to their fans and have looked to include as many people as possible that have been a part of the bands journey so far.

The band explain their aims for the new project: “Our aim is to produce a short documentary film to explore the kindness of humanity and decipher what drives these people. For those that have seen the live show before fear not, this will not be a light affair, but a thought-provoking exploration into the human spirit. In this short film, we will step out from behind the shadows of the masks to personally meet these inspiring people.”

The duo will also be heading out on tour to support the release of ‘Amplify Human Vibration’ and will be performing at:

31/10/17: The Talking Heads, Southampton
01/11/17: Concorde 2, Brighton
03/11/17: Bush Hall, London

01/10/17: Strawbs UK tour dates in support of forthcoming studio album

Strawbs are set to release The Ferryman’s Curse, their first album of new material in eight years. The official release date is set for 27th November 2017.

01. In The Beginning/The Nails From The Hands Of Christ
02. The Song Of Infinite Sadness
03. The Familiarity Of Old Lovers
04. When The Spirit Moves
05. The Ten Commandments
06. The Ferryman’s Curse
07. Bats And Swallows
08. We Have The Power

“The current line-up has melded together on the twenty-first century version of Hero And Heroine, and is now a tight working unit, with the band enjoying the performances as much as I have seen. Now put them to work with an extremely sympathetic producer in Chris Tsangarides, who can turn his hand to anything – from heavy metal/prog to acoustic simplicity – and some of the best songs to hit the Strawbs’ repertoire for many a moon, and that, I think, is a recipe for greatness. Throughout, Cousins often emotive vocals are excellent, perfectly placed in the mix so you can hear every word. Particular kudos to Lambert, whose perfectly judged guitar soars over many of the tracks, and Bainbridge, whose keyboards are impeccable – he has truly worked hard to capture some the classic Strawbs sounds, organ, mellotron (flute, brass, strings, chorus etc.) which would have graced their classic period albums for A&M. One of two surprises: there are a couple of twin guitar duets with Dave Bainbridge joining Lambert on electric guitar (“The Familiarity Of Old Lovers” and “We Have The Power”) – see later for the second surprise. And of course, the powerhouse rhythm section of the Strawbs – Chas’s melodic bass and Tony’s crisp drums and percussion holding the production together throughout – as good as ever they have ever been.” Continue reading Dick Greener’s review HERE.

In celebration of the release, Strawbs set out on UK tour dates (see below), including the album’s official launch date at London’s Under The Bridge on 29th October – and will include some very Special Guests!

The members of Keith’s family have personally overseen the preparation of this re-release and they are also preparing to approve a music transcriptions book of the album for release in early 2018. The family is focused on celebrating and enhancing Keith Emerson’s musical legacy and supporting projects which further the appreciation of his life’s work…

Keith’s eldest son, Aaron said of the release: “Since the passing of my father, we have been inundated with requests for a reissue of the album ‘Emerson Plays Emerson’. This album was a labour of love for Dad, so we decided to go with the original artwork to stay as true to the original as possible as we understand how happy Dad was with it. I know he would be happy with this re-issue, so on behalf of myself, Jo and my boys, of Damon and his family, of my mother Elinor, and of my father’s fiancé Mari, and with thanks to Daniel Earnshaw, Martin Darvill and Stewart Young for all their hard work, we hope you enjoy it!”
