Latest Prog News – from across the progressive rock spectrum & continually updated throughout September 2017.
20/09/17: Lee Abraham will release his new studio album Colours in November
Former Galahad bass man Lee Abraham tells Prog that he will be releasing a new studio album later this year. Colours, the follow-up to the well received The Seasons Turn will be released through F2 Music on 27th November 2017.
Abraham tells Prog: “The album features seven new songs that have a slightly different feel to my previous albums. Still very much a prog blueprint, but I have explored more AOR influences on this album with nods to Toto, Asia and FM.
Once again the album will feature my core band of Gerald Mulligan on drums, Rob Arnold on piano and Alistair Begg on bass, with me handling all guitars and keys.
Vocals feature stunning performances from Dec Burke, Marc Atkinson, Gary Chandler, Robin Armstrong, Simon Godfrey and the ever stunning Steve Overland!”
Abraham adds: “Lyrical themes touch on love and relationships, both good and bad and also how in modern life bad things happen yet we just seem to carry on, almost ignoring it all.
With artwork produced by Robin Armstrong and released through F2 Music once again, I am looking forward to this new one making its way in the world.”

18/09/17: Kscope to release new Tangerine Dream studio album
Kscope will be releasing the new studio album from Tangerine Dream, entitled Quantum Gate, on 29th September 2017, which will coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the band.
“Quantum Gate promises an updated, contemporary development of their trademark sound: sequencer-driven electronica covering a wide range of moods and atmospheres from ambient soundscapes to energetic, upbeat moments.”
“The album began as a concept and series of musical sketches by Froese before he passed away in 2015. Remaining band members Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane worked together to realize Edgar’s visions and expectations of a conceptual album that attempts to translate quantum physics and philosophy into music. New member Ulrich Schnauss comments: “at the moment hardly any other area of science questions our concept of reality (linearity of time etc.) as profoundly as research in Quantum physics – it’s no surprise therefore that Edgar was drawn to these ideas since he had always aimed at reminding listeners of the existence of ‘unopened doors’.”
Quantum Gate was recorded at Eastgate Studios, Vienna & Townend Studio in Berlin from August 2014 to June 2017; mixing handled by Tangerine Dream’s own Thorsten Quaeschning & Ulrich Schnauss; mastering by Birgir Jón “Biggi” Birgisson, Sundlaugin Studio Reykjavík, Iceland (Sigur Ros, Jon Hopkins, Spiritualized). The stunning album artwork was created by Froese’s widow Bianca Froese-Acquaye
This new opus should be seen as both a new beginning and a testament to Edgar Froese’s never-withering inspiration and ever-flowing creativity.”

13/09/17: Threshold’s Richard West on why prog tracks come in parts
UK progressive metal quintet Threshold released their colossal double concept album Legends Of The Shires last week via Nuclear Blast. The 11th studio album by the band features old/new vocalist Glynn Morgan, who lent his vocals to the band’s 1994 release, Psychedelicatessen. In contrast to the more straight-ahead heaviness and traditional structures of 2014’s For The Journey, the new album is an admirable exercise in flexing creative muscles and revelling in exploratory flair. In the penultimate trailer covering the new album, Richard West discusses why prog tracks come in parts…
Legends Of The Shires is available to order on a variety of formats: Limited Edition Gatefold Double NB Anniversary Green Vinyl including signed insert from the Nuclear Blast UK store: HERE | Limited Edition Digipack CD and Limited Edition Gatefold Double Vinyl inc signed insert from Recordstore.co.uk: HERE.
“Legends of the Shires is an outstanding achievement and easily the best album Threshold have ever created… It radiates imagination, exudes inventiveness and presents a triumphant tour de force in terms of an organic musical vision which flows with energy, bite and a compelling natural momentum. Mesmerising, at times spell-binding, it is well worth a listen.” – THE PROGRESSIVE ASPECT.
Threshold will embark on the “Legends Of The Shires” tour during November and December, kicking of in Greece on 12th November. 09/09/17: Thumpermonkey announce Electricity EP and premiere Tzizimime single
“Electricity offers delicate flavours of genre mastery in THUMPERMONKEY’s songwriting, be it King Crimson’s meticulousness, flamboyant cinematics circa Scott Walker or a dominant presence on the drum kit and guitars that parallels Queens of the Stone Age. Vocalist Michael Woodman channels a certain ambience akin to what you would imagine if David Bowie met Cardiacs.
The EP is inspired by the story of Victorian MP and visionary Lord James Badger, who, under divine instruction almost two hundred years ago, set out to conquer nature and “restore” the civilisations of Mesopotamia with the new power of Electricity.”
Tzizimime has been premiered on Prog mag, check it out HERE

Stephen Lambe explains why they felt so compelled to add Eppyfest to their roster of events: “Eppyfest is unique. No other festival in the UK combines rock, folk, jazz and contemporary classical music in such a fantastic way. As fans of the festival -and I’ve been to all but one – our intention is to give Eppyfest the budget and the organisational back up to secure its future and help it reach a wider audience, while freeing up Ian to concentrate on what he loves most – pulling the line up together.”
Ian Fairholm comments: “Putting EppyFest together over the past six years has been immense fun but also immensely challenging. I’ve had a strong desire to keep the festival going and allow it to grow, and with the help of Stephen and Huw, who have made the Summer’s End Festival such a success, I now see that as a definite reality. EppyFest will maintain its own distinctive character but this new partnership will help it to flourish in 2018.”
Eppyfest 2018 is already in the planning stage, and will take place as usual in late July, expanding to a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening. It will move from its previous home in Stroud to a new venue in the Cheltenham area.

Vocalist Jim Grey comments: “Songs for No One carries great emotional weight for me personally – the ideal to be a force of positivity in the world is an enormous challenge, but one that we should all strive for. At its core, this track is about the value of having passion, whether publicly displayed or not. Creations or work completed for yourself alone have just as much value as work seen or heard by many, for the experience, growth, and joy it brings to you alone.”
