Today sees the release of Asia ’s Symfonia – Live In Bulgaria, through Frontiers Records. Available on 2CD/DVD, Blu-Ray, and MP3 (audio only) the album was recorded during a special show on September 21st, 2013 during the Sounds of the Ages Festival at the magnificent Second Century Roman Theater in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. On some of the songs during the band’s set, Original Asia was joined by The Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Levon Manukian.
“While certainly not the intention when it was originally scheduled, in light of John Wetton’s recent passing, this release serves as a tribute to the late, great, legendary bassist and frontman, who passed away this January following a battle with cancer. R.I.P. John Wetton, it truly was an “Extraordinary Life” you led.”

16/02/17: Mew release second video from forthcoming album
Last month and by way of a taster, Denmark’s Mew released the official audio video for Carry Me To Safety, taken from the Visuals album. Today sees the release of the second track, 85 Videos, directed by the band’s vocalist Jonas Bjerre.
Jonas comments on the video: “I made a bunch of sequences, and crafted them into these ever-changing ‘faces’ that I then video-projected on to our actual faces. It’s like wearing a mask made out of photons. You can say a lot of philosophical stuff about masks – but don’t worry, I’m not going to. Hope you enjoy the video.”
Visuals will be released on 28th April 2017 and available in vinyl, CD and digital formats. The band will also undertake a series of European dates in May – see last month’s TPA News for more info.
16/02/17: The Enid release Shiva video taken from forthcoming album
“The Enid’s sound has once again regenerated with Jason, Zach and Dominic at the helm. Resurgency is a crossover album, a bridge between the old and the new. We’ve selected some of the standout tracks from the Trilogy of albums Journey’s End, Invicta and Dust, adding our own millennial twist.”
15/02/17: New studio album from Lonely Robot
John Mitchell‘s Lonely Robot announce their second studio album, The Big Dream, which will be released through InsideOut Music on 28th April 2017. All the instrumentation on the album is by John Mitchell except for the drums which are played by Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson).
John Mitchell says of the album: “The Astronaut wakes up from a cryogenic sleep but finds he’s no longer in space, and is instead in a woodland area surrounded by a group of strange people with animal heads! It’s a little surreal, a little ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to some extent. This is something of a solipsistic haze, for want of a better description!”
John Mitchell with Craig Blundell (drums), Steve Vantsis (bass) & Liam Holmes (keyboards) have announced the following Lonely Robot dates:
05/03/17: Progdreams VI, Boerderij, Zoetermeer [NL]
27/04/17: Sub89, Reading [UK]
28/04/17: Marillion Convention, Leicester [UK]
27/05/17: Trinity Live, Assembly Rooms, Leamington Spa [UK]
10/02/17: Mike & The Mechanics to release new studio album
Ahead of Mike and The Mechanics kicking off their massive UK tour tomorrow, comes the official news that the band will release Let Me Fly, their eighth studio album on 7th April 2017. The band will also be releasing a single, Don’t Know What Came Over Me ahead of the album on 28th February 2017.
Mike Rutherford commented in a recent press release: “In 1985, we were having the best time in Genesis… But after 28 years, myself and fellow Genesis members Phil and Tony wanted variety, so we ran our band and our solo careers side by side happily for many years. To be honest, it saved Genesis. The fact I’m still doing it with the Mechanics just makes me smile.”
Mike and The Mechanics’ tour starts on 11th February at Belfast’s Mandela Hall and runs through to the end of March, finishing off at Salisbury City Hall. Visit the TPA Gig Guide & TPA Festival Guide for all the dates and more from across the prog spectrum.
09/02/17: O.R.k. release video track from forthcoming album
We reported last month that Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (vocals), Colin Edwin (bass), Mart Sui Tubi (guitar) and Pat Mastelloto (drums), collectively O.R.k., would follow up their well received RareNoise Records debut album, Inflamed Rides, with a new studio release, Soul Of An Octopus, scheduled for release in two weeks time. Ahead of the release the band have issued the Collapsing Hopes track as a taster
“Because of the presence of drummer Mastelloto, it would be easy to draw comparisons to King Crimson for this project. (The opener “Too Numb” in particular has a kind of Discipline vibe in its interlocking ostinatos that create a hypnotic latticework pattern against Fornasari’s menacing vocals). One can also hear traces of such artistically inclined groups as Pink Floyd in ambitious tunes like “Scarlet Water…”
08/02/17: Allan Holdsworth – The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever boxset
Manifesto Records are to release a complete ‘solo’ career defining 12CD box set by Allan Holdsworth titled The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever. Alongside this will be a 2CD updated and expanded “best of” collection selected by the Allan, titled Eidolon.
“From 1982 through 2003, Holdsworth recorded a dozen albums that have been lovingly put together for The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever collection. Featured on the box set are eleven remastered studio albums, starting with the 1982 studio release, Allan Holdsworth, I.O.U., and the archival 2003 live release, Then!, recorded live in Tokyo in 1990. All feature additional bonus tracks added for special editions or the original Japan releases, along with the original artwork and studio credits. Also included are the Grammy-nominated Road Games, (1983), Metal Fatigue (1985), Sand (1987), Secrets (1989), Wardenclyffe Tower (1992), Hard Hat Area (1993), None Too Soon (1996), The Sixteen Men of Tain (2000), and Flat Tire: Music for a Non-Existent Movie (2001).”
“Manifesto Records referenced the box set’s seemingly portentous title from the cover story title featuring Holdsworth in Guitar Player magazine’s April 2008 edition. Given his humble nature, Holdsworth is a bit embarrassed by the title and finds the notion that he changed “guitar forever,” somewhat overblown—more befitting of names like Orville Gibson, Leo Fender, or Ned Steinberger.”
Manifesto Records will release The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever on 7th April 2017.

08/02/17: Blackfield release new lyric video from their forthcoming album
Ahead of the release of their forthcoming studio album V, scheduled for release on 10th February 2017 through Kscope, is a new lyric video for the song From 44 to 48.
Steven Wilson comments on the song “Even though I don’t really write songs with specific projects in mind, as soon as I wrote this one I knew it was for Blackfield.” He continues on the idea behind the track “From 44 to 48 is a song about growing older and letting go of dreams.”
Blackfield is a collaboration between Israeli songwriter and musician Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson.
“The new studio album Blackfield V, written and recorded over 18 months in both Israel and England, contains 13 linked songs that form a flowing 45 minute ocean themed song cycle. The duo expertly handle the vocals, guitars, and keyboards, with Tomer Z from the Blackfield band on drums, Eran Mitelman on keys, and string arrangements performed by the London Session Orchestra. Blackfield V is a powerful journey through catchy melodies, lush arrangements, and stunning production, with legendary producer / engineer Alan Parsons working on three of the album’s key tracks.”
Blackfield V will be released on Friday 10th February 2017.
05/02/17: Steven Wilson posts work in progress studio clip
Steven Wilson continues his brief WIP studio clips, this time featuring vocalist Ninet Tayeb, taken from his forthcoming studio album.
Here’s a short clip of myself and the amazing Ninet Tayeb recording vocals for the song “Pariah” from the new album in progress, written especially for us to record as a duet. Co-producer / engineer Paul Stacey is also in the clip, filmed by Lasse Hoile earlier this week.
06/02/17: Pendragon to release new live DVD in April
Metal Mind Productions announce that Pendragon are to release a new live DVD, Masquerade 20, which marks the twentieth anniversary of The Masquerade Overture. The band performed at the Wyspianski Theatre (Katowice) in May 2016 “to record a special show, consisting of all the classics from “The Masquerade Overture” as well as a number of fan-favourites from their other releases”.
The DVD includes an interview with Peter Gee and Jan-Vincent Velazco and additional extras.
Nick Barrett, guitarist and vocalist comments: “This dvd is probably the most cohesive performance from the band so far captured on film. Just as we have been together for so many years as musicians it shows us as friends as well, even with new boy, Vinnie our drummer and Verity and Tina on backing vocals who appear for the first time with us on DVD. The overall feel of the music and performance is fantastic and the sound is amazing.”
Masquerade 20 DVD is scheduled for release on 7th April 2017 in Europe (5th May in USA) and will also be available as a double CD.

04/02/17: Stewart Bell’s The Antechamber Of Being (Part 2) released later this month
Stewart Bell‘s second prog rock opera , The Antechamber Of Being (Part 2) – Stories From The Antechamber will be released on 27 February 2017, through F2 Music and features contributions from five vocalists: Simone Rossetti (of The Watch), Arjen Anthony Lucassen (of Ayreon), Phil Allen (of Citizen Cain), Bekah Mhairi Comrie and Stewart Bell. Each of the vocalists play a different character in the story. Release in July last year – here’s a taster from the album…
“In this second part of Stewart Bell’s epic trilogy of concept albums we are once again taken on a journey through the inner realms alongside the main character, The Dreamer and his mentor, The Teacher. Taking place during the same time period as The Antechamber Of Being (Part 1), which was released in 2014, the story follows the main characters as they continue to explore the amazing experiences made possible through lucid dreaming; the weird phenomena inherent with this type of conscious exploration of one’s mind; the questions that arise through encounters with seemingly independent dream beings and; the realisations and conclusions that are ultimately reached after a lifetime of dreaming awake.”

The artwork for the album will be by Ed Unitsky.
03/02/17: Hawkwind new studio album due in May
“In many ways, it is the perfect sequel to last year’s acclaimed concept studio album and live stage show, The Machine Stops, which was inspired by E.M. Forster’s Sci-fi classic, a dystopian vision of the future brought to life with characteristic Hawkwind style.”
“Warm-up dates for Hawkwind in mid-March are dubbed ‘A Glimpse Into Greenness’, which gives some indication of the conceptual and lyrical themes behind the band’s new album. To promote Into The Woods, Dave Brock and Co. will be touring through May, culminating in what is set to be a memorable show at London’s prestigious venue The Roundhouse on 26th May. It will be 45 years since Hawkwind played at the venue’s historic ‘Greasy Truckers Party’ in The Roundhouse and first recorded ‘Silver Machine’!”

Ahead of the forthcoming Steve Hackett studio album, The Night Siren is a preview of the track In The Skeleton Gallery
Steve commented on the track: “I’m excited by the imminent release of my new album, The Night Siren, which includes this track In The Skeleton Gallery. You know that ancient childhood night terror which creeps up on you in a dark moment when you’re least expecting it… This track moves from a dream-like groove with a Middle Eastern tinged accompaniment through to a sinister march and on to an out-there nightmare ride, before the child’s box of tricks reclaims it and the lid is finally closed…”
The Night Siren will be released on 24th March 2017 through InsideOut Music
