30/11/16: Sunn O))) announce UK show at London’s Barbican Hall
“American drone metal masters Sunn O))) will make their Barbican debut next March, bringing their arrhythmic blend of extreme metal, drone, ambient, noise and minimalistic music to the Centre as part of the Convergence Festival. Their music can be described as very slow, with distorted guitars, and the emphasis is on texture rather than rhythm. Sunn O))) was formed by core members Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson in 1998 and the band’s name is a reference to the Sunn amplifier brand. Over the years they have worked with a varying cast of collaborators including Attila Csihar, Ulver, Nurse With Wound, Julian Cope, Scott Walker and Oren Ambarchi to name but a few.
Support comes from classically trained Icelandic singer and cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir who has played and recorded with bands such as Pan Sonic, Throbbing Gristle and Múm, as well as her solo project Lost in Hildurness and has previously toured with Animal Collective and Sunn O))).”

29/11/16: Porcupine Tree to release 9LP box-set – The Delerium Years 1991 – 1993
“The Delerium Years 1991 – 1993 is a strictly limited edition nine disc vinyl box set that includes the first two Porcupine Tree studio albums, On the Sunday of Life and Up the Downstair, the Staircase Infinities mini album, the archival album Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape, and the two EPs that make up Voyage 34: The Complete Trip.
Pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl, the box set contents have been remastered by Steven Wilson: Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape and On the Sunday of Life feature masters for the most recent CD editions, which used the original analogue tapes for the first time (all previous editions derived from 1990s digital copies). The other recordings have all been specifically remastered for this set and feature more naturalistic dynamics and EQ. Voyage 34 uses the full length version of Phase IV as featured on the original 12 inch single release.
The deluxe box includes a ‘perfect bound’ book containing rare and unseen period documents and photographs, plus extensive biographical liner notes and an in-depth interview with Steven Wilson (revealing details about his childhood and early creative endeavours) conducted by Stephen Humphries. The box, book and LP packaging has been created by long-term collaborators; Lasse Hoile and Carl Glover.
The Delerium Years 91-93 follows the acclaimed The Delerium Years 94-97 set, and completes Kscope’s chronicle of the evolution of the UK’s brightest Psychedelic/Progressive/Alt Rock talent of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.”

28/11/16: Mabel Greer’s Toyshop to release new single from forthcoming album
Pre-Yes music legends Mabel Greer’s Toyshop has found a novel way of releasing new musical works. The band will release one track per month for eight months starting today. The songs will be initially available as downloads and buying all eight songs will qualify for a free CD and booklet at the end.
Since founding members Clive Bayley and Bob Hagger reunited, the band have written and produced this second album inside 2 years. The first offering “New Way Of Life” was co-produced by the bass player of YES, Billy Sherwood, who also featured on the album playing bass and keyboards. Tony Kaye, original organist for Mabel Greer and for YES, also played on “New Way Of Life”.
“No need to wait another year for fresh new Mabel Greer sounds, we would like our audience to slowly savor the songs one at a time, rather than trying to digest the whole album in one sitting”, said composer, singer and guitarist, Clive Bayley. “This new offering called ‘The Secret’ is comprised of all exciting new material, the prior album included songs written in the sixties”, added Bob Hagger.
Hugo Barré, on bass guitar, accompanies Bayley and Hagger along with a new addition to the band, Max Hunt on multiple keyboards who also co-produced this new album. What is The Secret? – Well apparently we will have to wait until the all tracks are released before finding out – an intriguing story…
The first song “Big Brother, Little Brother”, an almost 9 minute epic, laments the ongoing plight of Native American Indians. The track will be available from December 1, 2016 from Bandcamp, Amazon, iTunes and all major distribution platforms.

16/11/16: Pär Lindh forms new band Triton for 2017
Swedish keyboard legend Pär Lindh is launching his new band Triton | The Nice Legacy of ELP & PLP. The three piece band, including Göran Holmberg (bass), and Putte Saavedra (drums) will pay tribute to the music of The Nice, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Pär Lindh Project.
Pär Lindh comments: “My band Pär Lindh Project, or PLP in short, was struck by the passing of our beloved singer Magdalena Hagberg in 2007. She died from cancer and this was a terrible blow to the band from which PLP could never really recover.”
“Thus we have a situation today of three great keyboard driven bands that are no more. The Nice, ELP and PLP. In 1995 I played with Lee Jackson and Brian Davidson and we were going to form The New Nice but due to lack of financial backing it didn’t happen.
To keep the legacy of these three unique bands alive I have decided to begin touring under the name TRITON and the concept The Nice Legacy of PLP & ELP. The idea is that because all three above bands no longer exist we want to keep their legacy going as there is just an tremendous amount of extraordinary musical material to perform in concert. The musical legacy of three great bands all in one show!”

“Through their enchantingly dark and evocative melodies, expansive arrangements and empowered orchestral sound Beatrix Players tell stories of real life and fantasy. Citing influences as diverse as Michael Nyman and Regina Spektor and drawing comparisons to the likes of Kate Bush and Einaudi Ludovico; this London-based, all female trio combine elements of Folk, Jazz, Progressive and Classical music.”
This first release tells a story of disconnect, difference of opinion and the demise of a relationship. “In the video we used a mystical figure to portray how the male perceives the female in the relationship,” explains lead vocalist Amy Birks.
Beatrix Players will launch their debut single at the Green Note in Camden on Tuesday 22nd November 2016. Visit the TPA Gig Guide for this date and more…

14/11/16: Can to perform orchestral reinterpretations and new works at the Barbican
Founding member Irmin Schmidt premieres an orchestral reinterpretation of classic Can material alongside new work with the London Symphony Orchestra, before an all-star band of former Can members and long-time admirers pay tribute to their pioneering music.
“Assembling their music through improvisation and studio editing, Can’s writing process resembled collage. Tonight, Can founder Irmin Schmidt takes that approach to their entire oeuvre, conducting the world premiere of his piece An homage to Can, written with Gregor Schwellenbach, which weaves together quotations and abstractions of some of the band’s most renowned pieces.
After an extended interval screening of Can’s 1972 performance at Cologne Sporthalle, the second half of the show brings together a supergroup led by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), featuring ex-Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, as well as Can’s first singer Malcolm Mooney, realising and reinterpreting the band’s music.
Laying the foundations of what came to be known as Krautrock, Can became one of the most influential avant-rock groups of all time…
The concert takes place on 8th April 2017. Visit the TPA Gig Guide for this date and more…

10/11/16: Pain Of Salvation announce new studio album
Sweden’s Pain of Salvation announce the release of their new studio album, In the Passing Light of Day, on 13th January 2017 through InsideOut Music.
“Inextricably linked to the near fatal illness that band-leader Daniel Gildenlöw spent much of the first half of 2014 recovering from, the album is an altogether darker and more impassioned journey. Taking the hospital bed as a narrative hub, the lyrical and musical themes touch on all the conflicting feelings that run through a person’s mind when presented with the prospect of death and the passing of life.”

Daniel Gildenlöw comments: “What started off as an annoying infection has, in just hours, suddenly pivoted into the very real possibility of my actual dying.” That’s not to say, however, that all this record presents is blackness. “This album also shows the beauty of the transition, of the inevitable. And of the hope of a tomorrow, the hope of change, no matter how frail and naive that hope may be.”
The album will be available as a special edition 2CD Media-book (including expanded 48-pages booklet, several in-depth texts by conceptual author Daniel Gildenlöw, demo material & band commentary tracks), standard jewel-case CD, gatefold 180g 2LP vinyl plus album on CD as bonus & digital download.

Mark Buckingham’s brand new art is really special and the opportunity to work with one of our favourite artists is a massive deal for all of us. I’m really pleased to be able to release it in partnership with our friends at BEM.”
“It was a really exciting time making this album”, adds bassist and producer Kevin Feazey, “and I hope this reissue and the extra tracks will show that. This was where we started thinking that TFATD might be an actual band, and I’m happy that it is getting a new lease of life.”

01/11/16: Messenger call it a day
The announcement came in the shape of a brief statement posted on their Facebook Page: “It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that this musical voyage has come to an end. We’ve collectively had many messages about our status and why we’ve had to cancel festival appearances and tours recently; and after much deliberation, we’ve decided that this decision is the right one.”
“Only time will tell if this is a permanent disbandment; but for now, there will be no more Messenger for the foreseeable future. We will notify you of any new musical endeavours in the future from this page.”
01/11/16: Änglagård to release live DVD & Blu Ray in 2017
“The live recording took place during the band’s concert at Norway last year 2015, and is expected to be released before the band embarks next February 2017 as part of the line-up of Cruise to the Edge.”
In a statement on their Facebook Page the band revealed: “The Fan Club Page has gone live today, aiming at being a one-stop-pace for all things Änglagård, offering a wealth of information for the band’s followers along with a one-year-valid membership; which besides the usual perks (exclusive t-shirt, signed photo and poster) offers a unique DVD release containing archival footage recording of the Milwaukee and Houston concerts during the Änglagård’s US tour of 1993. Despite the visuals lack the crisp and clarity of technology nowadays the DVD shows an indelible and precious piece of Änglagård’s history, a history that is not only about the band but also about the audience that made them grow – a connection that still inspire them today.
“It was a time full of energy, creativity, friendship and conflicts and we are happy to offer our fans with some insight at the journey we embarked 23 years ago; from being naive dreamers to reaching out with our album and live shows around the world.”- reads the DVD description on the back. The band added: “Our fans have been waiting for decades to have access to recordings of any of our shows, and now we are pleased to offer them with two, one from our early beginnings and one from our present”.”
