24/05/16: Percy Jones & MJ12 to release debut album next month
MJ12, featuring Percy Jones, will be releasing their slightly delayed debut album, through Gonzo Multimedia UK on 24th June 2016. Recorded in the summer of 2015 at Shelter Island studios in Manhattan, MJ12 is jazz/fusion/prog music at its finest. Featuring virtuosic performances by all four band members, in many ways this album is an extension of what Percy Jones created with Brand X!
The above track does not feature on the new album…
Percy Jones commented: “We took the name from Majestik 12, which was supposedly a group of 12 scientists and engineers assembled in the late 40’s to investigate UFO’s. There is an ongoing debate as to whether this group actually existed or not. Stephen Moses and I had been doing gigs for a while where we would invite guests to sit in. We did all improv, so this was actually M&J +1 or 2. After a while we started using David Phelps and Chris Bacas on a regular basis if they were available. At this point we started writing stuff, but keeping a lot of the improv thing going to keep it spontaneous. The end result was bits and pieces of ideas coming from everybody that were all tied together to try and make a coherent tune, but with lots of blowing inside. By last Summer we felt like it had shaped up well enough to record it, so we went in and recorded it over 2 days.”

16/05/16: Brian May lends support to Tangerine Dream documentary
As the Tangerine Dream Kickstarter campaign to fund Feature length documentary draws to a close, Brian May pledges his support to the production effort to release a feature-length documentary, following the passing of Edgar Froese in 2015.
Brian May, who recorded the album Sonic Universe with Tangerine Dream in 2011 at Tenerife’s STARMUS Festival, said “I’m grateful I have the opportunity to contribute to this piece on Edgar because truly he was something wonderful, and for me it was something wonderful in my life to have an opportunity to interact with him and create together, and I remember him very fondly.”
Tangerine Dream started the production of their first documentary in 2014; after the sudden passing of founder Froese they decided to turn the short documentary into a full-length feature covering both the band and Edgars’ lifetime work. The impressive story of Tangerine Dream will be reconstructed through several interviews with Edgar Froese’s wife Bianca Froese-Acquaye together with band members, close friends, artists and famous collaborators and will include previously unpublished footage from Edgar’s private archive. It’s homage to the great musician Edgar Froese and the early era of electronic music.
Tangerine Dream is heralded as one of the pioneers of electronic and experimental music worldwide. They incorporated sounds from outer space and heartbeats in their revolutionary and unconventional sound and enriched countless classic movies with their unique soundtrack. The documentary will open the doors on Tangerine Dream’s musical evolution, their style and the philosophy behind their art, depicting the musical heritage of this revolutionary band and its visionary founder Edgar Froese.

16/05/16: Bad Elephant Music join forces with Freia Music
We are delighted to announce our partnership with another great record label – Bad Elephant Music from The United Kingdom!
Bad Elephant is one of the new and upcoming music labels in the UK releasing fantastic progressive music. They’re working extremely hard to offer a sound service for artists like The Fierce and the Dead, Nine Stones Close, The Gift and many others… BEM is founded by David Elliott, a long-time friend of Peter, though it wasn’t until BEM released Twice Bitten’s ‘Late Cut’ album last year that both of them realised they were in the same business!
Says David: “Peter is a long-time supporter of our sort of music, and he was a regular at many Twice Bitten gigs in the 1980s. It was great to meet him again at the BEM event in February, though rather annoyingly he looks no older! It’s fantastic to be working with FREIA, and we’re looking forward to helping each other spread the word.”
Peter: “This is a marvellous opportunity for us to join our efforts. It opens up both the UK and European market for us. I’m convinced that combining our strengths as independent music labels will ensure a larger audience for our artists. It’s an absolute joy to revive our cooperation we had during the eighties of the last century. Especially with a good friend as David!”
The two labels will continue to operate independently, and will be working with each other to extend their joint reach across the United Kingdom and the Benelux countries. Dutch customers can now buy BEM’s releases through FREIA Music from the new Bad Elephant NL website and music lovers in UK can order from FREIA Music‘s UK site.
13/05/16: Anderson Rabin & Wakeman tour dates
It was revealed back in January that Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman had been collaborating on new music and that they planned to record a new album and tour at some point during 2016.
In January this year “Rabin told Twitter followers that he’d once again been working with Anderson and Wakeman — and although he refrained from saying much, he did reveal they’re putting together plans for a tour.”
“The trio’s collaboration was first reported in 2010, but Anderson admitted it had been placed on the back burner a couple of years later, saying they “found it hard to collectively get together” but insisting, “Eventually, it will happen. You keep the door open and hope that it will happen.” With Rabin focused on film work, Wakeman continuing to pursue a solo career and Anderson exploring a few musical avenues, including a collaboration with Jean-Luc Ponty, hopes for the project dimmed.”
10/05/16: August release date announced for the new David Cross Band album
“Sign of the Crow is a hard-hitting CD, which shows the David Cross Band at peak performance. The core writing trio of David Cross, Mick Paul and Paul Clark have carved out a set of powerful rock songs offset by stunning metal edged instrumental passages.
As with the previous studio album, Closer than Skin, King Crimson lyricist Richard Palmer James has created high impact lyrics, which on this album are both dark and beautiful.”
The David Cross Band will release Sign of the Crow through Noisy Records on 5th August 2016.
The band have also announced two UK shows with more to follow. These dates and more from the prog spectrum can be found in the TPA UK Gig Guide.

03. Tear You Up (4:53)

Jonas Reingold had this to say about the album and its themes: “I got my inspiration to start writing DOT when I stumbled upon a text by the famous American author and astronomer Carl Sagan a while ago. He was talking about how small and insignificant we are in this vast universe.
It’s fascinating to think that this little dot is all we are and all we’ll ever be. It gives us perspective. And I think perspective is a great tool for making good choices.”
‘DOT’ also features a track co-written with Jonas’ old buddy and colleague from The Tangent, Andy Tillison, and he also contributes Hammond organ on the epic track God The Universe And Everything Else No One Really Cares About – which clocks in at nearly 30 minutes.”

Vocalist David Longdon says: “When we set out to make a video to illustrate the title track of our new album, Folklore, we decided to try to capture an impression of what it was like to be the listener to the ancient folklore stories which have come down to us through the ages.
Folklore tales are an integral part of who we are and who we think we are and help to form the bedrock of our cultures. These tales were told to fan the flames of our imaginations. They were stories of love and words of wisdom.”

From their humble origins as a two-person project back in 2007, Paradigm Shift have grown into a heady blend of influences and emerged with their own exuberant sound, distinctive, precise and powerfully political, with shades of metal, electronica and even jazz. And with Rob Aubrey (IQ, Big Big Train) at the mixing desk and Acle Kahney (TesseracT) on mastering duties, Becoming Aware is a beautifully polished package with an epic feel, one which reviewers have already described as “truly worthy”.
David Elliott of BEM adds: “There are nine years of innovation and refinement behind this first album, and you really can hear every minute of it. Daring, expansive, and uniquely British – what’s not to like?”
02/05/16: Njet, Njet 9 release video single from forthcoming debut album
Award winning composer and keyboardist Ville Kyttälä has assembled a top class “mini big band” for their debut release album. As a taster Njet Njet 9 release a video track, Unicorn Attack, taken from the album to be released on the Eclipse label.
Njet Njet 9 is a true 2010’s mini big band with a cheerful touch to making music. Their debut album is rich in arrangement, painting vast musical landscapes that range from nostalgic to futuristic. As band leader Ville Kyttälä puts it “Njet Njet 9’s music sounds like Zappa and Zawinul are playing tennis with Massive Attack at a Swedish summer cottage”. Easy going the music may be, but there’s still lots of layers to dig into.
02/05/16: Gryphon welcome Rory McFarlane and Keith Thompson
Following on from last month’s announcement that Richard Harvey had left the band comes news of two new members to the Gryphon family.

On recorders, crumhorns, oboe will be Keith Thompson: “Keith is a founder member of, and has made many recordings with, the Michael Nyman band, City Waites, and Terleton’s Jig and recorded with artists from Cliff Richard to Brian Ferry. He has performed with the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Royal Philharmonic, BBC Scottish and Welsh Concert Orchestras.”
01/05/16: Airbag launch Disconnected teaser video
Norwegian progressive rockers Airbag will release their fourth album, Disconnected, on 10th June 2016 via Karisma Records. Ahead of this the band launch a second teaser video – the first can be located HERE)
Guitarist Bjørn Riis comments: “The early demos for ‘Disconnected’ were written during a couple of months in late 2014. The idea and inspiration for most of the lyrics, and the title track in particular, came from me realizing that I had to make some changes in my life. I was tired of the daily routine, working 9-5 in an office doing basically nothing and never having enough time for my family and music. I took a year off and started writing for the album.
“As for the music, you want to look forward and explore new sounds and musical ground. We talked a lot about wanting to use more electronic elements and giving more room for the drums, allowing them to be more percussive and basically avoid the usual rock formula on all songs. We also wanted to do a more stripped down production and create a more spacious and dynamic sound.”

01/05/16: Phil Ryan ~ RIP
Another fine musician left us yesterday – composer and keyboard player Phil Ryan, possibly best known in progressive circles for his work with Welsh giants Man. However Phil had a long career which included numerous recordings with Eyes Of Blue, Pete Brown and of course Man.
“Phil was an astounding musician, a true heavyweight and a major player in the legacy of The Manband…”
Phil Ryan (21 October 1946 – 30 April 2016)
