29/05/15: Steve Hackett – Premonitions: The Charisma Recordings 14 disc box-set due in October
Steve Hackett“Universal Music Group have announced a 14 disc Steve Hackett box set for October release called Premonitions, that will cover his time with Charisma Records between 1975-83, including the first 4 albums in newly created 5.1 surround sound versions.

Unfortunately I was only able to remix 2 of these into discrete surround since the multitrack tapes for the other 2 albums could not be located, so instead I created surround sound upmixes from the stereo masters using Penteo Surround software (which nevertheless came out sounding very immersive and worthwhile). All of the remixing was supervised and approved by Steve.

More news and confirmation of contents soon I hope.” SOURCE: Steven Wilson Remixes

The box-set is scheduled for release on 16th October

25/05/15: Stephen Lambe to retire from the Classic Rock Society Committee
Stephen Lambe - CRSIt is with deep regret that we announce that Stephen “Lambsie” Lambe has decided to retire from the Classic Rock Society Committee, effective June 30th. This is what he had to say about his reasons for stepping down:

“I have been a member of the Society since 2001 and involved at the heart of the societies affairs since 2008. As many of you know, being involved in an organisation like the CRS as a volunteer is hugely time consuming and even stressful sometimes – like having a second day job – and I’ve now decided that it’s time to reprioritise my life for a while. I’ve given all I can for now, and it’s time to stand aside and give others a go.

Stephen also commented: Meanwhile, I am not going anywhere – I still plan to be active in the music world and the Summers End Festival – which was never a CRS event anyway – will continue with myself and Huw at the helm for many more years, I am sure. It is not affected in any way.” Continue reading HERE.

24/05/15: Coming Soon – Strange Readings From The Weather Station?
1st June see’s the release of James McArthur & the Head Gardeners long awaited new album. The tracks invite you on a journey, with songs as changeable as the British weather.

Following the release of the EP ‘Lawn Order’, Strange Readings From The Weather Station, delivers a startlingly accomplished brace of songs in a unique style of hazy folk; with plucked guitar lines & breathy, playful vocals that are reinforced with yearning violin parts and haunting pedal steel guitar. The sound echoes the likes Nick Drake and Iron and Wine from a perspective that’s all his own; grounded and fleeting and always profound.

The tracks invite you on a journey, through rolling harmonies, shifting guitar, with songs as changeable as the British weather.

The album was recorded at Tin Room Studios in Hackney, London and Wickham Farm, Welling (once the home and studio of singer Kate Bush) with Head Gardeners Johnny O and Jim Willis, and featuring guest musicians Samantha Whates and Syd Arthurs’ Joel Magill and Raven Bush.

22/05/15: Marc Atkinson withdraws from Ghost Community
Ghost Community, including former and current members of The Reasoning, Riversea, Also Eden and Godsticks, currently working on their début album reveal, on the band’s Facebook page, that Riversea’s Marc Atkinson has had to pull out from the project due to time commitments.

Ghost Community logo“It’s with a heavy heart that I had to bow out of my position as lead vocalist for GHOST COMMUNITY. When I first got involved with the project I was expecting it more to be an ‘album based/recording’ outfit rather than a band that was going to be gigging too heavily so I thought I’d be able to juggle the recording work and a few gigs here and there with my already busy and booked solo acoustic live work. As time went on, however, I began to realise that I wouldn’t be able to play as many live shows as the rest of the guys were hoping to perform. I knew that if I stayed with the project I’d eventually be in a position where I’d be letting the rest of the band down and holding them back as far as live work was concerned. So I decided it was in the band’s best interest if I pulled out of the project before we got any further down the creative route. I hope to be still involved with the band in a smaller capacity by helping out with backing vocals for the album and I’m also pleased to hear the group will be hopefully using a few of the vocal melodies I wrote during the initial song writing sessions. I greatly enjoyed my brief time working with the guys in GHOST COMMUNITY and wish them nothing but success for the future… We’re all in this together…”

His replacement will be John Paul Vaughan, who had previously worked with Matt Cohen in the 1990s in a band called Unbroken Spirit. Read more HERE.

19/05/15: Symphony X to release new studio album in July
New Jersey’s progressive metal masters Symphony X will release Underworld, the band’s follow-up to Iconoclast (11), through Nuclear Blast on 24th July 2015.

Symphony X“Musically, Underworld has things reminiscent of the bands previous albums but this one definitely has its own individuality,” stated Michael. “Every element added was in service of the song, so the album flows and becomes a total listening experience from start to finish. Every song is to-the-point and fine-tuned, with us paying a lot of attention to the hooks, voices, riffs, and keeping the interest and the energy high for the entire record. It is heavy and aggressive as fuck when it needs to be, yet soaring and emotional at other times. I think the balance is just right. It had to have all the elements of what we normally would do, just tweaked up a notch and really fine-tuned…”

In depth details can be found on the band’s Official Website.

15/05/15: Field of Vision return with new EP
Today sees the release Field of Vision’s The Vicissitudes Of Life [EP] which “deals with the uncertainties of life together with the realisation of one’s own mortality”.

“Originally formed in 1988 in Glasgow, Field of Vision re-formed after more than 20 years apart.

After a brief spell in Abel Ganz, singer Martin Haggarty advertised for prog rock musicians and found himself in a rehearsal room with keyboard player Graham Holley & drummer David McDonald. Guitarists & bassists came & went over the next 3 years, but the songwriting core of Haggarty/Holley/MacDonald remained constant. Many gigs were warmly received, and a cassette-only single “Lessons in Predictability/How Are Things In Moscow Anyway” was released in 1990, snapped up by a hardcore following. Eventually however, non-musical careers and family life took over, and Field of Vision took a sabbatical, although they remained firm friends.” Continue reading at the Field of Vision website.

“TECHNICIANS OF THE SACRED is the latest in a long line of Ozrics recorded triumphs, their first double album since the epic Erpland, over twenty years ago. It’s a mind-bending swirl of richly layered, evocatively ambient, and ethereal musical landscapes, seamlessly morphing through beatific freeform dub trips, incredible rave grooves, and psychedelic progressive rock, to create a heady, kaleidoscopic mixture of tones and textures. The aim is not just to make truly unique and culturally diverse music, but also to harmoniously unite all in attendance, and create portals for astral travel. Many fans and listeners report feelings of euphoria, an immediate connection to nature as well as others around them, and intense feelings that they have journeyed to other dimensions or met with other-worldly beings. It’s an open exploration of music and the soul.” SOURCE: INDISCREET PR

IO Earth“During the making of “New World”, recording was temporarily delayed as Dave and Adam made changes and additions to their line-up, introducing Jez King on Violin and Christian Jerromes on drums and percussion in July 2014. These changes have added a new edge to their sound, with some heavier influences coming from the new members, while it retains all of the original unique qualities that grabbed the fans attention to begin with. The new album also has long-time members Luke Shingler (Sax) and Christian Nokes (Bass) continuing to bring their own influences and style, plus vocalist Linda Odinsen who, while having been on the road with IO Earth now for almost three years, makes her long-awaited first appearance on disk.”

No official release date has been announced however the band have announced it will be available in time for their Birmingham’s show later this month. This date and many more can be found in the TPA UK GigGuide.
